    Well, we settled the original issue. We all now know what a shofar sounds like. So why not?

    jlk: Well, why don’t you buy the paper this week and see if I’m there!

    Sem 20: Yes Yedidim has a name. And if you live south of Peterson, you probably know it. After all, its on his license plate! And will I see you this afternoon? BTW, what makes one a Telzer that seems to offend so many people on this thread? If you’re there second seder, doesn’t that mean you’re part of the team? Unless, of course you yourself are Yedidim! Then I understand why you don’t call yourself a Telzer . . . yet.

    mak: Good one!

    Yummy: Have you had my wife’s yummy cupcakes? You know they can also be found in the aformentioned Yated!

    Gefen: She saw your comment. She’s following this thread as well. And I actually saw your son at the “Car Show” last night.

    And to Popa: The gauntlet has been thrown down. We’ll see what we can come up with.

    So Popa, I just spent night Seder at the Peterson Park Kollel. Were you there? Oh yeah, you said you’re not coming back till Wednesday. Are you still scheduled to return to our windy city tomorrow?

    Any reason my previous post got deleted? Did I divulge too much of someone else’s personal info? It was nothing more than was already in the coffee room! I just collected it in one spot! Please feel free to not post this but to answer me by email. YWN editor knows me and where my personal email address is available in the Public Media on a regular basis.

    Generally I have no problem with your editing, and what the Mods have cut out from my postings. I’m just trying to understand this one specific issue.

    I wasn’t the mod who deleted it, but yeah, it looks a bit too personal. The subject may have gotten a bit freaked out if she saw it. -95

    Rav Dovid Oppen has been in the holy land for more than 30 years now. But R’ Usher and R’ Shmuel Dovid Gluck are STILL the 11th and 12th grade rabbeim, ka’h!

    Reb Reuven Gluck was, and still is the Baal Shacharis in the Yeshiva. Rav Chaim Schmelczer, ztl, was the baal Mussaf. Today, he has been replaced by his sons, R’ Moshe and R’ Shmuel.

    The Telzer davening is addictive. Once you experience it, and absorb it, it is very difficult to leave.

    To Popa: I am a Telzer. I have responsibilities in the community (I say shiurim in both the Aguda shul and Bais Tefila) as well, so I live closer to Peterson than Foster. But I daven in Telshe every Shabbos morning. (Actually, I’ve been the Baal Koreh there for almost 25 years now. So how’s that for blowing my cover!) (Gefen should’ve figured out on the Bloomenkranz/Weiner thread a couple of weeks back as well.)

    The studies that have linked vaccinations to autism have been proven to be frauds. Not only that, but those who do not innoculate their children, and allow diseases that could be eradicated to survive, can probably be considered rodfim. The eintire humanity will suffer when these diseases make a comeback in the children that are not protected.

    I say this with all due respect to gedolim like Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky and family who are extremely anti vaccination, and into all kinds of natural health products. Yes, I know its hard to argue with the relative health that many in that family enjoy even at advanced ages, tavo aleihem bracha, I think that may be a special zechus that Hashem gives them. Plus R’ Yaakov’s genes surely don’t hurt either!

    I know a family that was recently meshadech with an einikel of Rav Shmuel. Rebbetzin Kamenetsky told the mechutenes, “We’re so happy to be associated with your family!” At first they got all excited about such a warm approval from such a distinguished rebbetzin. Rebbetzin K then said, “I’m really happy that you don’t do vaccinations.”

    Even so, that entire philosophy has recently been proven to be based on fraudlent research.

    There was once wealthy baal habos kamtzan who used to ask every meshulach a riddle. “If you can tell me a word in the Torah with four straight Kometzs, I’ll give you a generous nedava.” Naturally, most people could not answer, and went away empty-handed and disappointed.

    One talmid chacham successfully answered, “Harachama” (one of the non kosher birds).

    The Baal Habos reluctantly reached into his pocket, and said, “Do me a favor, halt es bai dir, I don’t want my secret to get out!”

    So the Talmid Chacham says, “So how about you answer mine! Where is there a word with four straight patachs?”

    The Baal Habos thinks about it then says, “I give up. What is it?”

    The talmid chacham answers, “Hakadachas. And do me a favor, halt es bai dir!”

    Huh? Aren’t sizable Kollels in Chicago? Between the coasts, Chicago has the largest except for maybe Toronto!!

    Telshe Yeshiva has a couple dozen. Chicago Community Kollel has almost that many. Ohel Torah has 16. Skokie Yeshiva has some more. And there are some others as well. (Those would be of the non-sizable variety) PLus there are large chaburos of baalei batim in each of those and many others as well. Telshe Yeshiva has more than 150 bochurim in addition to the kollel, so there’s [plenty decent chaburos to speak with in learning.

    Not to say that any of these are looking for outsiders at this minute, but to say they don’t exist shows gross ignorance on the part of one who supposedly is doing research on out of town!

    The Gemara in Bava Basra says that 90% of people are in the cemetery due to ayin hara. That doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t end up there anyway, thank you nachash (also Bava Basra).

    The gemara talks about zugos, and says that if you’re not makpid, then it won’t bother you. That’s because zugos brings on SH’Ds. They don’t like it when you obsess over them, so they come and get one who is obsessed, when he trips up.

    That is not ayin hara. That has a power to be me’orer kitrug, whether you pay attention or not.

    This is a copy of an actual letter sent to Ryan DeVries, from the

    Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, State of Michigan. Wait

    till you read this guy’s response – but read the entire letter before

    you get to the response.

    Mr. Ryan DeVries

    2088 Dagget

    Pierson, MI 49339

    SUBJECT: DEQ File No. 97-59-0023; T11N; R10W, Sec. 20;

    Site Location: Montcalm County

    Dear Mr. DeVries:

    It has come to the attention of the Department of Environmental Quality

    that there has been recent unauthorized activity on the above referenced

    parcel of property. You have been certified as the legal landowner

    and/or contractor who did the following unauthorized activity:

    Construction and maintenance of two wood debris dams across the outlet

    stream of Spring Pond.

    A permit must be issued prior to the start of this type of activity. A

    review of the Department’s files shows that no permits have been issued.

    Therefore, the Department has determined that this activity is in

    violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, of the Natural Resource

    and Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994,

    being sections 324.30101 to 324.30113 of the Michigan Compiled Laws

    annotated.

    The Department has been informed that one or both of the dams partially

    failed during a recent rain event, causing debris and flooding at

    downstream locations. We find that dams of this nature are inherently

    hazardous and cannot be permitted.

    The Department therefore orders you to cease and desist all activities

    at this location, and to restore the stream to a free-flow condition by

    removing all wood and brush forming the dams from the stream channel.

    All restoration work shall be completed no later than January 31, 2002.

    Please notify this office when the restoration has been completed so

    that a follow-up site inspection may be scheduled by our staff. Failure

    to comply with this request or any further unauthorized activity on the

    site may result in this case being referred for elevated enforcement

    action.

    We anticipate and would appreciate your full cooperation in this matter.

    Please feel free to contact me at this office if you have any questions.

    Sincerely,

    David L. Price

    District Representative

    Land and Water Management Division

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    RESPONSE:
    Dear Mr. Price,
    Re: DEQ File No. 97-59-0023; T11N; R10W, Sec. 20;
    Montcalm County
    Reference your certified letter dated 12/17/2000 has been referred to me
    to respond to. First of all, Mr. Ryan De Vries is not the legal
    landowner and/or contractor at 2088 Dagget, Pierson, Michigan.
    I am the legal owner and a couple of beavers are in the (State
    unauthorized) process of constructing and maintaining two wood “debris”
    dams across the outlet stream of my Spring Pond.
    While I did not pay for, authorize, nor supervise their dam project, I
    think they would be highly offended that you call their skillful use of
    natural building materials “debris.” I would like to challenge your
    department to attempt to emulate their dam project any time and/or any
    place you choose. I believe I can safely state there is no way you could
    ever match their dam skills, their dam resourcefulness, their dam
    ingenuity, their dam persistence, their dam determination and/or their
    dam work ethic.
    As to your request, I do not think the beavers are aware that they must
    first fill out a dam permit prior to the start of this type of dam
    activity. My first dam question to you is:
    (1) Are you trying to discriminate against my Spring Pond Beavers? or,
    (2) do you require all beavers throughout this State to conform to said
    dam request?
    If you are not discriminating against these particular beavers, through
    the Freedom of Information Act I request completed copies of all those
    other applicable beaver dam permits that have been issued. Perhaps we
    will see if there really is a dam violation of P! art 301, Inland Lakes
    and Streams, of the Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Act,
    Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.3010,1 to
    324.30113 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, annotated. I have several
    concerns. My first concern is aren’t the beavers entitled to legal
    representation?
    The Spring Pond Beavers are financially destitute and are unable to pay
    for said representation – so the State will have to provide them with a
    lawyer.
    The Department’s dam concern that either one or both of the dams failed
    during a recent rain event causing flooding is proof that this is a
    natural occurrence, which the Department is required to protect. In
    other words, we should leave the Spring Pond Beavers alone rather than
    harrass them and call their dam names. If you want the stream “restored”
    to a dam free-flow condition – please contact the beavers – but if you
    are going to arrest them they obviously did not pay any attention to
    your dam letter (being unable to read English).
    In my humble ! opinion, the Spring Pond Beavers have a right to build
    their unauthorized dams as long as the sky is blue, the grass is green
    and water flows downstream. They have more dam right than I do to live
    and enjoy Spring Pond. If the Department of Natural Resources and
    Environmental Protection lives up to its name, it should protect the
    natural resources
    (Beavers) and the environment (Beavers’ Dams).
    So, as far as the beavers and I are concerned, this dam case can be
    referred for more elevated enforcement action right now. Why wait until
    1/31/2002 The Spring Pond Beavers may be under the dam ice then, and
    there will be no way for you or your dam staff to contact/harass them
    then.
    In conclusion, I would like to bring to your attention a real
    environmental quality (health) problem in the area. It is the bears.
    Bears are actually defecating in our woods. I definitely believe you
    should be persecuting the defecating bears and leave the beavers alone.
    If you are going to investigate the beaver dam, watch your step! (The
    bears are not careful where they dump!)
    Being unable to comply with your dam request, and being unable to
    contact you on your answering machine, I am sending this response to
    your office via another government organization – the USPS. Maybe,
    someday, it will get there.
    Sincerely,
    Stephen L. Tvedten
    In this case, as heinous as the crime that was committed, and as much as we know that HKBH will judge properly, and we expect that means things will not go well for Mr. Aron, we must still be careful not to become achzarim ourselves, all in the name of vengeance against a horrible murderer.
    Not that anybody cares, but the daughter that I mentioned before had her baby boy last night!!
    Also, to Dr. Hall. It would be worth your while to take the time to listen to Rav Gifter’s speech. Among the things that he does there is that he acknowledged the constitutionality issue. He then said that it is the derech haolam to stake out a position that they feel is correct, and then hire a legal team to defend it as best possible. His taana on Rabbi Dr. Lamm was that he did not hire a legal team to defend the university’s right to take money, even with banning the club. He hired a legal team to defend the club’s right to exist! Not the other way around.
    If after attempting to defend the Torah position Dr. Lamm still lost, then there could be a difference of opinion. Rav Gifter said he still wouldn’t take the government money under those circumstances, Dr. Lamm would. That is a debate worth having, without public machaos. Rav Gifter’s Macha’ah was against hiring legal help to defend the anti Torah position, and not even attempting to take the high road.
    To droid and others: The source of the story was Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. Someone mentioned the Zionist murderers of Dr Dahan, z’l, and added yemach shemo. Rav Sonnenfeld said, “If he would die childless, no matter how big a baal aveira he was, the Torah would require his brother to marry the almana (or chalitza). The posuk adds, ‘V’lo yimacheh shemo miYisroel.’ The Torah does not want any Yid to have his name erased from Klal Yisroel. From here we learn never to say Yemach Shemo on a Yid.”
