I think it’s terrible not to call somebody the name they want to be called, especially if it is their real name. My name is Michael, but when i was in yeshiva, my rabbis insisted on calling me “Michoel”. That’s not my name, and it’s not even my hebrew name (Yerachmiel). I have a friend named Shawn, and they called him Shloimy. I have another friend named Mark, and another named Rush. They were called Mordachai and Gedalya. It bothered us all greatly. I think Shawn is still scarred. Something must be done. We must get the message out: It is forbidden to call somebody a name that they don’t like.
Michael SavageMemberRight on WYI! Wolfishmusings is VERY far off about Jews being no more showy. Anyway, since when are jews okay if their acting exactly like the non-jews?! Aren’t we expected to live more meaningful lives than goyim? Aren’t we supposed to be a “light unto the nations”? A shining example for the rest of the word of how to live moral, meaningful and fulfilling lives?! It scares me what’s become of this world when I see a comment like that. Wake up and see the light WolfishMusings! Repent while you still can!
Michael SavageMemberI just changed my profile password. Neat how you could do that! Am I wrong about this?
Michael SavageMemberSheepishmusings is a better name for you you! you couldn’t be wronger! “Am I wrong?!” I think that the whole point of the speech is to keep the congregants that can’t learn Torah on their own busy. Obviously those that can handle learning, like my shul in Brooklyn don’t need such elemantary antics, such as a “rabbi’s shmuz”!
Michael SavageMemberOh yes! I agree totally about Amsterdam Billiards. I’ve had many a successful date there. I personally enjoy Jerusalem Pizza on Main Ave. in Passaic. It’s small and quiet, and has an intimate touch. Prime Grill is okay too. So how ’bout them Yankees?!
