Just to clarify, I have nothing against people learning CPR and First Aid. I just think it’s counterproductive to insist that everyone learn too much. You end up with people thinking they know what they’re doing when they really don’t.
MenoParticipant“Of course there are! So e/o should learn CPR & first aid.”
“I wasn’t talking about more common, but about life threatening!”
So by that logic, everyone should learn how to fly an airplane, in case the pilot drops dead mid-flight.
MenoParticipantHealth,
“My above post was for e/o, especially for laymen ie. those completely untrained in dealing with emergencies!”
It’s very easy to give instructions for one specific situation, but the reality is that there are a thousand different emergencies one could encounter, and it’s unreasonable for a person to be trained to deal with every single one, and it is unreasonable to expect an untrained person to be able to act properly under that kind of stress.
And if you’ll say that a person collapsing on the floor is more common, so everyone should be prepared – I’ve been alive for quite a few years, and I have never seen it happen, so it can’t be that common.
“Who said I’m not?”
Well to start, all the exclamation points
MenoParticipant“I wrote false information!”
false
adjective
1.
not according with truth or fact; incorrect.
“the test can produce false results”
synonyms: incorrect, untrue, wrong, erroneous, fallacious, flawed, distorted, inaccurate, imprecise;
You gotta learn to chill out
MenoParticipantI was once sitting at the Kosel learning, and there were some teenagers sitting there pulling notes out and reading them.
I was quite disturbed.
MenoParticipantI heard that a miracle occurs and they don’t get wet.
Or maybe they get wet, but Hashem has plenty of malachim to sort through them to figure out what they say.
Or maybe Hashem knows what you wrote, even without reading it.
MenoParticipant“it’s like he’s holding a piece of chazer on shabbos in the rishus harabim.”
That doesn’t sound so bad. Probably not even assur. Just annoying because you can’t move, or eat it.
MenoParticipant“Leaves me wondering if I should make a birkas harei’ach as well.”
I’ve heard there are those who say you can use ground coffee for b’samim by Havdalah. Not sure what b’rocho you would make.
I’ve also heard that even according to those people, you can’t use instant coffee because they spray something in there so it smells good when you open the container.
MenoParticipant“Not only did not one poster get it right, but the magazine in Yiddish was giving e/o false information.”
What was the wrong information they were giving?
(I don’t get the magazine and I don’t understand Yiddish)
MenoParticipantThere’s a TED Talk given by a guy who played along with one of these e-mail scammers. It’s quite entertaining.
MenoParticipantThere are situations where in order to be accepting of other people you would have to compromise on your own values. Not saying there’s no way around it, it’s just very difficult. It’s not as simple as just “getting along”.
December 16, 2016 1:37 pm at 1:37 pm in reply to: Why does greek yogurt smell like stanky fish? #1200637MenoParticipantI eat greek yogurt every day and I have never had that experience.
December 15, 2016 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm in reply to: At what age should someone purchase a burial plot? #1199999MenoParticipant“There is no official time, but if one first waits to buy one when someone needs to be buried, the family will be paying a “premium price” for a grave(s).”
Why is that?
MenoParticipant“The Mechaber says that, but Mishnah Berurah says many Acharonim disagree.”
How do you see that from the Mishnah Berurah you quoted?
All he said is that if you went to the bathroom and didn’t say Asher Yotzar until the next time you went to the bathroom, you would only say it once rather than twice.
There’s still no specific time window.
MenoParticipant“?? ??? ???? ?? ???????”
Is that how the line goes?
MenoParticipantI think the same could be said about most, if not all, connoisseurs
MenoParticipantPopa Is Chulent Meat. By, Popa
What if I’m really Chulent Meat
Everybody Except Popa is Chulent Meat
MenoParticipantDo you have to wash if you didn’t sleep in a bed?
Also, can’t you just get a paper/plastic cup on the plane?
MenoParticipantWoohoo!! Mazel Tov!!
MenoParticipant“Meno, the Chasidim have at least as many great marriages as non-Chasidim, so clearly something is working with how they’re doing things.”
I don’t doubt that. But as I said it’s not for everyone. The chasidish system works well for chasidim due to other cultural factors. That system wouldn’t work well for other people.
My point is, perhaps you’re right that in an ideal world everyone would do it that way. But this isn’t an ideal world and there’s no way you could get the chasidish system to work for everyone.
MenoParticipant“Am I missing something? What newsletter?”
He means article
MenoParticipant“Data and texting only”
Isn’t that what phones are for?
I thought phones were for calling…
MenoParticipant“Agreed but please change it to some colour other than blue which makes it look a link (like the comment anchor is).”
Yes! Thank you.
MenoParticipantRequiring the chasidish type shidduch system would result in many terrible marriages. I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with the system, it’s just not for everyone.
MenoParticipantAnyone ever play The UnGame?
My wife made me play it when we were dating.
I don’t remember much about it, just that it is not a game at all.
It was torture.
MenoParticipantbk613,
So wouldn’t they also see the grade you got the first time (before you took the course over)? Or does that grade just disappear?
MenoParticipantDoes it work?
I feel like a lot of kids would be embarrassed to just sit there waiting for someone to talk to them.
MenoParticipanttznius – Judging by your response, I don’t think you understood anything I said.
MenoParticipant“Is Dating Tznius?”
That’s kind of like asking “Is wearing clothing tznius?” or “Is making a wedding tznius?”
There’s a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it.
MenoParticipantor deep fried chulent on a stick.
MenoParticipant“So I guess the difference is whether or not the meat is ground?”
I guess, but also ground beef is not generally made from the type of meat that you would want to put in your chulent.
MenoParticipantIf you have T-Mobile, you can use your cell phone in Israel. I think it’s pretty much free with maybe one or two exceptions.
Data and texting only
December 12, 2016 5:34 pm at 5:34 pm in reply to: renting an apartment in lakewood for a month #1200511MenoParticipantHow are you going to go to Touro Pharmacy School while living in Lakewood?
MenoParticipantI live in/around Queens.
If you don’t mind babysitting my kids you’re more than welcome to play boardgames in my dining room. Help yourself to anything the fridge, there’s even some leftover chulent in there.
MenoParticipant“The boys that i know that live their you dont want to be around so dont go there.”
Tznius,
I suppose there are no bad guys wherever you live.
I know plenty of wonderful people from Queens.
MenoParticipant“What should you do if people are talking while the rabbis talking and you cant hear him over them?”
Say “SHHHH!!! NU?”
MenoParticipantI’m pretty sure this was said already, but as long as the credits transfer, they just show up as transfer credits without a grade, and they don’t count toward your GPA. If you’re just looking to learn the subject, there are better and more economical ways to do it than enrolling in a college course.
MenoParticipantI once played a game on a date and we were each trying to let the other win.
MenoParticipantWhen I read the title, I thought “I hope this person isn’t asking whether or not there is a minyan in Monsey”.
Then I read the post (albeit a bit too quickly), and thought “oy, this person is asking whether there is a shomer shabbos minyan in Monsey”.
But then I read it again, and I get it now.
MenoParticipant“People don’t want to. They don’t want to work hard. They don’t want to live just for Hashem…”
Who are these “people”, and how do you know what they want?
MenoParticipantBy the way, it’s not a lot of mosquitoes, just more than I would expect in the winter.
December 9, 2016 4:06 pm at 4:06 pm in reply to: problems with not jewish college and this is why you should go to touro #1214985MenoParticipantYserbius,
Very well said.
As I’ve said before in other threads, if you think college is hard, wait until you get into the real world.
MenoParticipantThe canned sauce is usually just tomatoes with not much spice added to it. You have to add stuff to it.
MenoParticipant“If using to cook and eat we take from the rear of the container. If for baking we take from the front as they are not as cold and will come to room temperature faster.”
Wow. You really have this figured out.
MenoParticipant“Someone with two Jewish parents”
Why two?
MenoParticipantI’ve been told it’s not polite to ask someone if they’re pregnant.
But then again, mosquitoes have never been very polite to me anyway.
I like the lizard idea though.
MenoParticipant“How did a post about black nail polish get so long?”
Well that’s what happens if you don’t clip them
MenoParticipantlilmod ulelamaid,
How does putting on your hazards contribute to the safety of the “oilam”? You’re still blocking the hydrant.
lightbrite,
Do you think there is a better chance that you will get a ticket if you have your hazards on or off?
I find it unlikely that a cop will see a car parked by a hydrant and not give a ticket just because he has his hazards on, especially considering the fact that most of the time when people do that it’s not actually an emergency.
And btw, they can give you a ticket for parking by a hydrant, even though you’re right next to your car. Legally you can only stand by a hydrant if you’re sitting in the driver’s seat.
MenoParticipant“What I don’t get is why people stopped at hydrants think it’s better to stop several feet from the curb.”
Also they think it will help to put on their hazards. It really just draws more attention to the fact that they’re parked by a hydrant.
MenoParticipantiacisrmma,
It’s possible, I haven’t had it in a long time. Though I was very picky about that kind of thing when I was a kid. It was just little pieces of onion, no real chunks.
