Yeshivas should focus on procuring a sufficient secular education for their students before anything else.

    Before anything else?

I was once at a minyan where a guy actually yelled that out in the middle of davening.

    Was that you?

OR is not a hashgacha. It’s “registered trademark.”

    Ooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

That makes sense. I saw it on a package of turkey bacon and I was wondering, “Who would give a hechsher on that?”

What proportion of liver to onion do you use?

Depends on the size of the onions. I buy bags and they come in random sizes. I usually try to get around 1:1

Most Jews become FedEx delivery people or gas station attendants.

Occasionally you’ll find a Jewish accountant.

when you are uncertain, you give your spending money, not your tzedaka money.

But why not give that spending money to a verified tzedakah instead? Especially in a case like this where they should have no problem getting a Rov to back it.

There are big Ba’alei Tzedakah who give tremendous amounts to other causes, but not nearly as much to yeshivos, and it’s not because they’ve run out of money.

Ask anyone who does fundraising for Yeshivos.

People with large familes only have so much extra Tzdekah to give, once they give their Maasar, pay the bills and maybe a little extras, there is little left over

    Case in point.

Supporting Limud HaTorah is a charitable cause. You can use your Maaser to support Limud HaTorah.

    I don’t see how this:

Our community can boast of countless tzedokos for hachnosas kallah, infertility, medical costs and needs, feeding poor families, and others. There is also a staggering variety of gemachs. Add to that, there are massive amounts of tzedokoh that go on between people that do not involve organizations or publicity.

    Implies this:

No one takes being machazik Torah lightly.

Yes but only if it’s dried salami.

Does it not go rancid if you hang it dry by your basement?
So far, so good. Though the wonderful salami smell seems to be gone.

If I was a kid and saw dried salami hanging, I might want to jump up and pull it down -and get hurt in the process.

My daughter has asked me what they’re doing up there. I just told her she’ll understand when she gets older.

He didn’t say that. He said:

Many professions do not require college degrees

Avi, that statement is simply not true.

ColumbiaGrad17, I’ve looked through everything Avi K has said in this thread and I have no idea what statement you’re responding to.

Some people aren’t cut out for college. Those people shouldn’t be pressured to go to college. There are other options.

Not saying it’s right, it’s not, but it’s hard to place all the blame on Drs.

You’re right. My intention was not to place the blame on doctors.

I was just trying to make it clear that patients shouldn’t refrain from taking what the doctor prescribed in an attempt to save the world from mutant bacteria.

Though now that I’m thinking about it, a good doctor should be able to instill confidence into his patients. He should be able to convince a patient that antibiotics are unnecessary, rather than succumb to their request and prescribe irresponsibly.

Is the fault of bacteria mutating to resist antibiotics the result of physicians administering too much antibiotics to patients?

Could be. It definitely doesn’t help.

    Sorry, I should rephrase that.

Why did the antibiotics cause it to mutate?

    Evolution

And how does the new mutation affect others who later develop the bacterial infection but hadn’t previously been treated with the antibiotics?

    Gadolhadorah
Getting objective and non-judgmental advice on matters of halacha online when you don’t have physical or electronic access to a rav/posek with whom you’ve established a personal relationship Is a lot better than simply not getting any advice.

Would you say the same about medical advice? Do think I would have been better off listening to the advice I got from WebMD and checked in to a rehab facility to take care of my cocaine abuse problem just because I wasn’t able to get in touch with an actual doctor?

WebMD gives people a false sense that they have diagnosed their problem, which is most often not true. The same would be true of the website you are suggesting.

(For anyone just tuning in, I don’t actually have a cocaine problem. Though I suppose that’s what someone with a problem would say…)

That’s only after you’ve given $5.45 million in gifts in your lifetime (not including the first $14,000 of each gift).

If I were to give you $1 Million today, neither you nor I would have to pay taxes on that money.
