May 25, 2018 10:29 am at 10:29 am in reply to: Why does Schmaltz Herring cost $22 a pound? (excluding the onions & oil) #1526195MenoParticipant
Sometimes I just combine two containers so that I end up with one container full of just herring and I leave a container of oil and onions for the next guy.
MenoParticipantWhat were the “original” tefillos? The way the avos davened?
May 23, 2018 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm in reply to: Is there any food better than an excellent potato kugel? #1525248MenoParticipantEating or not eating something Kosher by any standards just because it was not eaten in The alter Heim is not Frumkite
Again, who said otherwise?
May 23, 2018 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm in reply to: Is there any food better than an excellent potato kugel? #1525227MenoParticipantIf you search, you will find numerous postings….
I’ve searched, and have found no such postings.
Here’s this thread in a nutshell:
CR Posters: “Kugel is good”
Gadolhadorah: “Why eat kugel when tofu is so much healthier and just as good?”
CR Posters: “Because tofu is gross”
Gadolhadorah (and zahavasdad, to an extent): “The fact your grandparents didn’t eat a certain food doesn’t make it treif”
Did I miss anything?
May 23, 2018 2:33 pm at 2:33 pm in reply to: Is there any food better than an excellent potato kugel? #1525173MenoParticipantThere are obviously many CR posters who passionately hold that eating anything their bubbah and zeidah didn’t eat in the Alte Heim is like eating chazerfleish
GH, can you please show me one post which indicates anything like this?
if something is deemed to be kosher, but not something eaten in the Alte Heim that is should be avoided
ZD, same question to you.
If I didn’t know better, I would think you both were deliberately trying to bash frum Jews.
MenoParticipantThey’re saying it’s been sitting on the shelf since October 1st. It’s now May 23rd.
MenoParticipantThis is her chance to say what she really thinks and take down her enemies within the seminary.
Actually a great idea. Let her get up there and say that she was asked to speak but the seminary didn’t adequately prepare her for that, so she has nothing to say.
MenoParticipantI actually found this to be very informative.
The tip at the end about using alcoholic drinks was particularly helpful.
MenoParticipantThe previous Matersdorfer Rov, Rav Shmuel ztzl married his first cousin.
Was she still his cousin after that?
MenoParticipant“You missed the point of my comment!”
Yeah that seems to be an ongoing theme here
May 8, 2018 12:36 pm at 12:36 pm in reply to: The guy who insulted the chasidish boy should go to jail for child abuse!!! #1517751MenoParticipantI just watched the video again. I agree with Joseph. The kid had no idea what he was saying, and if he was crying it was before the guy even started talking. The guy wasn’t even yelling.
May 8, 2018 10:09 am at 10:09 am in reply to: The guy who insulted the chasidish boy should go to jail for child abuse!!! #1517659MenoParticipantPeople yell at kids all the time.
I’m not saying it’s a good thing, but sending someone to jail for yelling at a kid will send you down a very slippery slope.
MenoParticipant“At the time that he was born, the law was that everyone had to have an American name.”
I’m not a lawyer, but I find it hard to believe that there was ever a law like this.
MenoParticipantFurthermore, the coolness inside your house is balanced by the increased heat generated by the other half of the AC (which sits outside your window). So equilibrium is restored.
The A/C actually gives off more heat on the outside than it removes from the air inside. Maybe the fact that it’s making it hotter outside should be an issue.
April 23, 2018 1:50 pm at 1:50 pm in reply to: knish eating contests. good fun or achilas gasa #1510134MenoParticipantWhen I said I don’t like knishes, I meant I don’t like the taste. I have no problem with the shape, whatever it may be.
April 23, 2018 12:47 pm at 12:47 pm in reply to: Getting a ride with someone from the opposite gender #1510108MenoParticipantYeah but the wind chill must be brutal
April 23, 2018 12:47 pm at 12:47 pm in reply to: knish eating contests. good fun or achilas gasa #1510107MenoParticipantI would never take part in a knish-eating contest.
Not because I think it’s dangerous, it’s just that I don’t particularly like knishes!
April 19, 2018 1:50 pm at 1:50 pm in reply to: Getting a ride with someone from the opposite gender #1508915MenoParticipantBasic politeness (good morning, good evening, etc.) is certainly fine.
I wouldn’t make a blanket statement like that.
MenoParticipantI believe the term “shadchanus” as it’s being used in this thread is referring to the money paid to a shadchan, not the act of arranging shidduchim.
April 19, 2018 1:09 pm at 1:09 pm in reply to: Help: No expiration date on store bought schug #1508882MenoParticipantI’m no expert, but I’m willing to bet that schug never goes bad.
MenoParticipantI wouldn’t actually keep just one, but a bottle; because ASA goes bad quickly!
If it goes bad, how would it help to have a whole bottle of it?
MenoParticipantWait, are we talking about sudden death or untimely death?
They’re not necessarily the same thing.
Either way, both terms are very broad terms so the question is basically meaningless.
April 13, 2018 1:46 pm at 1:46 pm in reply to: What would you do with an overabundance of ground coffee? #1506131MenoParticipantI try to avoid Costco locations with gas stations for that very reason.
April 13, 2018 12:31 pm at 12:31 pm in reply to: What would you do with an overabundance of ground coffee? #1506062MenoParticipantI once woke up in the middle of a Costco trip, on a Costco mattress.
April 12, 2018 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm in reply to: What would you do with an overabundance of ground coffee? #1505811MenoParticipantDoes coffee cake have coffee in it?
MenoParticipantThe majority of car accidents involve aliens.
I wouldn’t be too sure about this. Even if there are aliens out there somewhere, It would be very unlikely that they have cars.
MenoParticipantThe majority of car accidents involve men.
MenoParticipantThe little I know,
You must be new here. Welcome to the Coffee Room!
MenoParticipantThe Rambam lists 13 core beliefs? which one is that antithetical to?
The first one?
April 9, 2018 4:19 pm at 4:19 pm in reply to: Sick and tired of spoiled cholov yisroel milk #1504195MenoParticipantDo people use powdered milk instead of liquid milk?
MenoParticipantI used to use a bi-fold wallet. Then I realized there were just a lot of extra layers of material for no real reason (probably more wallet than contents). So I switched to a no-fold type thing. It had slots for credit cards, a clear window for driver’s license, and also a metal clip on the side for cash. Then I realized that I don’t really need separate pockets for each card, I don’t need a clear window for my driver’s license (if I ever have to show it, I have to take it out anyway – I’m not handing over my whole wallet), and I don’t carry a lot of cash. So I just recently switched to a single clip. I have all of my cards, license/registration, and cash in one stack clipped together.
I’m still getting used to it but I like it.
April 5, 2018 12:28 pm at 12:28 pm in reply to: Sick and tired of spoiled cholov yisroel milk #1503205MenoParticipantI’ve seen them. They’re not too common though.
MenoParticipantNO
Finally, a straightforward answer.
Now, two follow-up questions:
1) Why not?
2) Are you sure?MenoParticipantOk so let’s say I have leftover flour from the matzah bakery. I’m sure it hasn’t come in contact with water.
Let’s also pretend it’s not dangerous (because I’m not actually planning on doing this).
Am I allowed to eat it?
MenoParticipantThanks. That wasn’t my question though.
MenoParticipantI’m going to start a thread called “Health Logic” and fill it with logically sound statements made by our beloved Health. I’ll start with this one:
Did you vote for Trump?
If not, why are you quoting his absurd comment?!?MenoParticipantI found it fascinating that none of the letters actually express support for him or what he did. Nothing political or ideological. They just express a general attraction toward him as if he were a regular person.
That’s why I called it a strange phenomenon.
MenoParticipantTyping in short-hand for chol hamoed?
MenoParticipantCTLAWYER,
You feed your animals store-bought gefilte fish?!
Oy. I thought you were better than that.
MenoParticipantHere’s my take on the situation (and brisim in general):
You should do whatever makes you happy and feels comfortable. You should absolutely not feel pressured to go out of your way and be matriach your family to make sure the entire community has a lavish breakfast (unless the community members are volunteering to take the night shift with the baby for a week).
Mazel Tov!
MenoParticipantIs there some kind of ordainment ceremony?
MenoParticipanthttps://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/rabbinic-titles/#post-1024734
Interesting. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard people called up as “heChaver Rav Ploni….”
MenoParticipantRead artscroll commentary!!!
Ah that’s why I didn’t know the answer.
But anyway, I was referring to Chaver in the context of “Ya’amod heChaver Ploni ben Ploni…”
MenoParticipantI’m confused. Why are you allowed to put cold food on it?
MenoParticipantWhich detergent do you use?
We make our own
MenoParticipantFor pesach we only use cloth
MenoParticipantGH,
Again, why should I be machmir for no reason?I like to enjoy life. I also enjoy learning, even the subject matter is not immediately relevant. As such, I would hate to be part of whatever religion you’re describing.
MenoParticipantMy point was rather simple…when in doubt, don’t
So you’re saying that one should generally be machmir rather than ask a halachic shailoh? I’d hate to be a member of that religion.
MenoParticipantIf there’s a will, there’s a way.
MenoParticipantHe probably doesn’t have a good understanding of photography.
Several people took videos of themselves driving on that same road at the same time of night and the road is pretty well-lit.
