“For example, the leading cause of pediatric trauma deaths has shifted from car accidents to firearm-related incidents.”

This is a misleading statistic commonly referenced in order to push gun control. While the statistic is true if you include all children ages 1-19, it is not nearly true for each individual age. A disproportionate number of those gun deaths occur among older teenagers, and that is due largely to gang violence.

Conspiracies are inherently unlikely to be true. The more people involved and the more time that passes, the more unlikely they are to be true.

Once you figure this into the equation, everything falls apart.

“it’s a lost cause and we should just accept gang wars, school shootings, and armed muggings as a fact that will never go away.”

That’s not quite what I said. I said the “banning guns” solution is a bad solution. Sometimes a bad solution is worse than no solution at all.

I think school shootings can be largely prevented by having armed civilians in schools.

I don’t know the solution to gang wars, but I can’t imagine taking away their guns will suddenly make them all friends.

    Yserbius,

“I don’t think it’s impossible, just very difficult and it would take a long time”

It would require so much legislation that would be met with so much resistance. While all that legislation is being worked out, the manufacture and sale of firearms would go through the roof, just exacerbating the problem. Then let’s say they actually do manage to put bans in place, imagine the logistical nightmare of getting people to give up hundreds of millions of guns. Imagine how many people won’t go down without a fight. The country will tear itself apart.

Of course all this is assuming you can repeal the second amendment, because otherwise none of this even gets off the ground.

It’s virtually impossible, and it would take forever. Keep fighting for it if it makes you feel better, but it’s a bad idea and it will never happen.

Nu nu, that’s why I gave my other answer. It would be impossible. The number of guns in circulation is so high, and is constantly increasing. Banning guns only potentially removes them from the hands of law-abiding citizens, it doesn’t make them disappear. It’s a losing battle.

“we have seen time and time again, that armed civilians do little to stop mass shootings”

Have we? How many mass shootings failed to be stopped by armed citizens?

“So why don’t we start by banning anything that isn’t small?”

Because it’s impossible, and also it would violate the second amendment

Problems like this are silly. They’re not math problems, they’re “follow the rules” problems. The rules are arbitrary. Tell me the rules and I’ll give you the answer.

Yserbius, you may be right, but the reality is that you will never change the culture of the entire country. A huge portion of the country is pro-gun, and the number of guns in circulation is staggering (and talking about gun-control only causes that number to increase).

A simple, practical solution is to get rid of gun-free zones. Most mass shootings would be stopped within seconds (if not prevented altogether) if law-abiding citizens were carrying guns.

I’m not talking about gang violence. That’s a different issue altogether

    BAN ALL GUN[-free zone]S!

That’s the only way. Any who thinks banning all guns is a solution isn’t really interested in solving the problem, they just want to make themselves feel good by being on the “right side” of the argument.

    right about now,

Welcome, and thanks for your input.

Do you think 12-15° is actually the most comfortable angle, or do you think it’s just the best balance between being able to see the writing and also looking at the audience? I would think a steeper angle would be more comfortable to read if you don’t have the audience factor.

So I just did a bit of research and I discovered another possible issue that I hadn’t thought of:

The advance payments are being calculated based on last year’s tax returns. If your situation changed between last year and this year (e.g. income significantly higher, children no longer eligible) then the advance payments will be higher than they should be, and when you file you will have to pay back whatever you were overpaid.

They’re only paying half of it in advance, so there still will be credits. Also, as Syag pointed out, the amount of the credits increased, so it’s possible that even if you didn’t change your withholding you might not end up owing so much when you file. The credits also start to phase out above certain amount income limits so the situation will be different for each person.

I think there will still be a lot of people surprised to find that they owe taxes when they file.

You can go online and decline the advance payments and just take everything as a credit.

Ah ok. So it’s beneficial for the people who don’t owe taxes. I hear.

But for the other people it doesn’t really help to get it early, because you just have to pay it back early as either withholding or estimated payments.

    It’s all just for show.

    Ujm, what am missing?

Coffee addict, you’ll owe more taxes not because the credit is taxable, but because your tax credit will be smaller since you already received part of it in cash (e.g. if you received $3000 in advance payments, your tax bill will be $3000 more than expected, because your credit will be $3000 less than expected). Also, you file your 2021 tax return in 2022 – not sure what your point was with that.

Shimon Nodel, was that question directed towards me? Because I think I understand it quite well. If I’m missing something please explain it to me. Thanks

So CDC now says that people who are vaccinated can be in a room together with other vaccinated people with NO masks and NO social distancing.

Although they don’t give a hard limit, the CDC’s guidelines strongly imply that this only applies to small private gatherings. It’s clear that the intent was not for large indoor gatherings.

Not saying I agree with the guidelines, just trying to be fair.

The Rambam says that if you are able to prevent a rodef from killing by some means other than killing him, then you are not allowed to kill the rodef. It is clear from this that the mitzvah to kill a rodef is only in order to save someone’s life. It has nothing to do with justice.
