“The details of his life as described in the Gemara are widely off that of the Gospels, such that the Yeshu of the Gemara lived nearly 100 years earlier. There is a good chance that they are not the same person and it is a mistake to attribute the activities of one to the other.”

There are (at least) a couple people that went in to the legend of J. One who lived around 100 BCE (see Sotah 47a) and one who lived around 100 CE (see Horiot 5b IIRC).

In the Gemara of Sanhedrin, last chapter, a certain non-believer asked a Rabbi about the length of Bilaam’s life. The Rabbi responded 33, and the other guy said “sounds good”. One interpretation is that the other person was asking so that he could use that number for the legend that he was about to create.

Liberals are into symbolism over substance.

Let the riots go on for a day or two or three. Let them “raise awareness”. Then it’ll all subside.

“What is alarming to me is the attitude of ‘NevilleChaimBerlin’ that has become pretty mainstream- disqualifying anyone who and anything that does not conform to the (extreme) chareidi line. “

While I often find NevilleChaimBerlin’s opinion to be extreme, here he is saying nothing extreme. Like it or not, we judge people by the company they keep, especially when they are there for decades. Beside which, we all have our “red lines” which we say is too much. When there is wholesale abandonment of Mitsvot and denial of Torah min hashamayim, that should be any Orthodox person’s minimum red line to say that’s not Orthodox.

If Heschel joined JTS supposedly before it went OTD, I could somewhat justify his staying there. But first he went to the Reform HUC, which had already thrown off Torah and Mitsvot for years. Like, what was he thinking?

Even at JTS, it was just a few years later that they “mattired” Chillul Shabbat. That did not happen in a vacuum. It’s not like they were following halacha l’mahadrin and then just said, hey let’s drive on Shabbat. They obviously were on a spiritual plummet from smaller breach to larger breach.

Maybe Heschel thought he could mekarev them. I can’t comment so well as I am not in his shoes, but if that was his intention, he clearly failed. In fact he clearly failed to see how he would fail.

For example, you might read “Bereishes bara Elokim: es hashamyim v’es haaretz….”

You can read it in a different way that is chronologically correct. According to one Midrash, Hashen created 6 worlds before the present one. With that in mind read the passuk like this:

“Bara Shis” – [HE] created six [worlds]

“Bara Elokim et hashamyim v’et haaretz” [then] Hashem created the heaven and earth.

    Lavender,

From what I hear, I just have a gut feeling that something is off with him.

“He asked his rabbi if he can give me his number but the rabbi said no.” That sound to me really weird. What’s he or his rabbi afraid of?

“He is 30 and already lived in 3 different countries on his own.” Sounds a little unstable.

“it seems he didn’t really have relationships before either, except one, who turned out to be crazy.” – At 30??? Sounds immature socially. BTW it takes two to tango. Saying that she was crazy does not bode well for him.

“He is 30 and already lived in 3 different countries on his own. So he didn’t sound immature or someone who can’t make decisions without his rabbi. ” But yet he did. Again something off.

In literature analysis, the term romance means a fictitiously embellished account or explanation. In other words, slightly beyond reality, as opposed to fantasy which is way beyond reality. So even in English, romance means fiction.

I was thinking about this recently and came to the hypothesis that romance books (about love and lust) are called that because they romanticize (fictitiously embellish) real couple interaction.

IMO, a man can be just as misled by his unrealistic expectations.

In the beginning I was convinced that Trump was working for Hillary. As he rose in the polls, I thought maybe not – maybe he is his own man. Not that it seems that he is attacking her a lot less, and more well orchestrated “surprises” are coming out against him, I am starting to think again that he is working for her. They made it look like he had a chance. Trump is a master salesman. He knows what to say and when to say it to make a deal. He said stupid things at the debate IMO that he knew he shouldn’t have.

BTW, the Clinton’s have done this before in 1992. Bush, Ross Perot and Clinton were in a 3 way tie. Perot pulled out of the race right before the Democrat convention. Clinton spoke very well, like usual. About half of Perot’s supporters went to Clinton. None went to Bush. A few years later, the federal government bought about a billion dollars worth of junk land in Texas, which “happened” to owned by a Mr. H. Ross Perot.

“…people in general (male/female) are attracted to different things …”

IMHO, people are attracted to what looks healthy. Makeup can give a healthier look. Foundation, for example, helps the skin look smooth and even colored. That looks more healthy than blemishes and splotches, and experiments have shown that people find smooth skin to be more attractive. Lipstick and Rouge look like good blood and circulation. Etc.

The charaidim still take a lot of gov’t money. If you see the P+L of a school, you will soon realize how they need gov’t money and how much they take.

A few years ago, there was a movement to separate Ramot Beit Shemesh into two different cites, one Charaidi and one for everyone else. The Charaidi mayor told the Charaidim not to do so because they would not have enough money if they just relied on their own.

In a biography that I have about Ran Ovadia Yosef, it says that he always held like the B”Y, except for 53 times. When you consider that there are like 10,000 siifim in the Shulchan Aruch, 53 times is not much. In one instance, the biography states that R”OY said that the the B”Y did not have a copy of the R”OSh for that inyan. We now have that girsa, so even the B”Y would agree to the change.

Rav Ovadia Yosef was critical of the Ben Ish Chai because ROY felt that the BICh somewhat deviated from the Sephardic Halachic Tradition by including Ashkenazic psak and also Kabbalistic psak.

This is not to say that ROY didn’t have the utmost respect for the BICh. He did. But he felt that he had to voice his opinion as needed. ROY used to teach a BICh class(I believe in depth) on Sundays. He taught through the BICh 10 times and wrote a commentary based on those classes. He published that commentary, and it’s called Halichot Olam.

AS APY said, the problem was because the women were making themselves up for immorality. See the passage form the Gemara.

    Shabbat 62a, Soncino Translation:

[mesakrothh] eyes:28 they filled their eyes with stibium and beckoned.29

Walking and mincing: they walked, a tall woman by the side of a short one. And making a tinkling [te’akasnah] with their feet: R. Isaac of the School of R. Ammi said: This teaches that they placed myrrh and balsam in their shoes and walked through the market-places of Jerusalem , and on coming near to the young men of Israel, they kicked their feet and spurted it on them, thus instilling them with passionate desire like with serpent’s poison.30

[bosem] there shall be rottenness:31 the place where they perfumed themselves [mithbasmoth] shall be decaying sores. And instead of a girdle a rope [nikpeh]: the place where they were girded with a girdle shall become full of bruises [nekafim]. And instead of well-set hair baldness: the place where they adorned themselves shall be filled with bald patches.

    (24) Isa. III, 16.

    (26) Ibid.

    (27) I.e., with short mincing steps. One who walks with outstretched neck must take short steps, because he cannot see

    his feet (Rashi).

    (28) Ibid.

    (29) To the men.

When I took a biology class, the beginning of the evolution chapter(s) pointed out that there may be various explanations to explain what looks like evolution, including a Creator.

The problem with that book and others, however, is that they start by saying things like “We think it happened this way based on ….”, BUT later they don’t say “we think”. After a few pages, the books usually sound more resolute, as if they know. And they leave off the idea of a Master Planner (past the initial page or two).

If not, why are the R”T wearers wearing it? If yes, why are the Rashi-only wearers not wearing both? “

A female neighbor of mine one told me that one reason that women don’t wear tefillin is because it’s too big of a risk if not done correctly. In fact, that’s why men only wear tefillin for 45 minutes and not all day.

That concept may be applied to wearing R”T. Better to do the minimum correctly and not mess up, rather than going for too much and messing up.

“2) Ashkenazin amd Sephardim have different minhagim and they pasken differently.”

So should you separate Ashkenazim that pasken by the Taz vs Shach vs M”A OR separate by modern poskim?

“1) Without having to explain on Pesach what Ashkenazim hold is chametz the Sephardim hold is Matza and rice.”

Total am-haartzus. Rice is not Chametz. The Rema says that the Ashkenazic minhag is not to eat rice, but one can own it and benefit from it. In fact the Rema says that if a little falls into a pot of food, the food is mutar on Pesah, unlike chametz.

I think that most kids can respectfully see other minhagim while keeping their own.

“2) Our Sefer TOrah looks and is held completely differently then theirs.”

Same Torah inside. Beside which, some Sephardim use Sefrei Torah in cloth covers.

“3) Hald the class pronounces the taamim one way the other a different way.”

News flash. The Sephardic way is correct, at least according to an Ashkenazic Rebbe I had, who was a baal dikduk. According to that Rebbe, missing the accent could change the meaning. For example vi-A-hav-TA is the proper accent and not vi-a-HAV-ta (see the taamim). That mispronunciation changes the meaning from future to past, and a person may not be yotzei K’riat Sh’ma.

Actually Ashkenazim used to do it correctly until the Haskala.

    1) Black children are brought up at home in a different way than white kids, therefore it will be difficult to integrate them into the school environment as they have a different way of expressing themselves academically and socially

    2) The White school systems are based on the European model – which is very different from the old Black system
