“There is no kosher ibuprofen,”
I have gotten children’s liquid ibuprofin (or mortin) with an OU. I forgot which brand it was.
MDGParticipant“Halachically, one must make every effort to patronize a Jewish company, especially a company that makes such strides to be Shomer Shabbos. “
I think it’s because Satmar does not view El Al as being Jewish.
MDGParticipantPBA,
Very nice “take 2”.
May we all speak with Chessed and Emet (notice that chessed always comes first when the two are mentioned). And may we all be zocheh to Teshuva in all our speaking.
MDGParticipant” I toned it down majorly from how I first drafted it.”
I’m glad you toned it down from very rude to just rude.
“Go back and read what I was responding to. “
Also please keep in mind who you are responding to. Waiting time is not MiDiorysa; Onaas Devarim is.

“By the way, there are a great many “frum” psychotherapists. I put “frum” in quotations because I do not believe that any one person is still living exactly k’halacha.”
No one is perfect; we are all human. As it says in Avot, “hacol l’fi rov hamaaseh” – according to the preponderance. The understanding is that are all imperfect, so we are judged on the majority, rov.
“Some of our sins may be more obvious than others, but none of us can state with clarity that we live exactly as we should.”
I once had a conversation with Rabbi Twerski about how addicts justify substance abuse, and he said to me that we are no different than them. They have their bad habits that they justify and we have ours. Theirs are more obvious though.
PuhLease, I see you as saying that “no one is perfect, so why should I care”. You seem that you are showing some anger and scorn. If I’m wrong feel free to tell me. If I’m right, it seems to me that you may need to work out some issues. I can understand why you could still feel resentment. You describe a neglectful childhood in which your parents devalued you as a person. To make matters worse, you were in an abusive marriage where the tyrant claimed divine right.
I might be going out on a limb here, but it seems to me that you are rather self-critical. It seems natural considering how it seems that you have not been shown much real love, but instead lots of judgement. I may be thinking of that because I used to “beat myself up” as a psychologist once told me.
Anyway, it’s late and I know that my thoughts may be disjointed. I want to apologize if I say anything offensive to you in this conversation. Thank you for answering my questions above. I look forward to hearing more from you (and not from vochindik).
vochindik, if you are reading this, remember that silence is golden and duct tape is silver. If you don’t have the will power to communicate like a mentch, consider the duct tape.
MDGParticipantWhy no sugar? Honey is 82% sugar, so what’s the difference?
Anyway, I make a water Challah that uses rather little sugar. I use 1 teaspoon of sugar per cup of white flour. For a 5# bag, that would be 19 teaspoons = 1/3 cup and one tablespoon.
I put the sugar in warm water with yeast for about 1/2 hour, sometimes up to an hour. By the time the yeast-water is added to the flour, much of it has already been processed by the yeast.
MDGParticipantPulease,
Please clarify somethings for me.
A few years ago, you said that you have a wife in this thread Yeshiva Delay – Children Sitting Bored For Week At Home . But above you wrote ” I do not dress like a streetwalker….”, implying that you are a female. What happened? Did the mods get confused or is that a shared account?
“I was a status symbol. Nothing more, nothing less.” Can you tell me more about that? I’d like to understand it better.

If anyone has not noticed, she has been judged several times already and she has not even told us a thing about her life. Pay close attention to what has been said to her and about her.
MDGParticipantPuhLease,
PuhLease tell us your story. I have no contempt, nor will I have any.
MDGParticipant“I heard a seminary girl tell me that her school told her not to eat from a certain hechsher because it is the equivalent to OU,”
Many (if not most) of the Heimish brands rely on the OU, either in their ingredients or they go to OU certified factories and do their own run and put on their own hashgacha. It’s impossible to not use the OU if you are eating processed foods.
MDGParticipantIt seems to me that the Charaidi world is more focused on building and growing. The population is growing fast and the needs in terms of living, both physically and spiritually, are pressing. The scarce resources may be allocated where they are more strategic. To hire one Rebbe for a class may effect 25 students positively. At the same time that salary could be paid for a Kiruv person who will probably influence less people for less time.
I’m not saying that outreach is not important, but one can say that you get more bang for the buck investing in the existing Charaidi system.
MDGParticipantIf the MO are going OTD then charaidi are also to blame. Quite a few of the Rebbes in the MO schools are Charaidi. Actually, there are not enough MO people that go into chinuch, so they hire many Charaidim.
One can argue that the Charaidi Rebbes are not helping.
MDGParticipant“the whole point with artcroll is that ashkenazi jews (and sefaradi jews) should be interested in learning about sefaradic gedolim (and ashkenazi gedolim)”
The whole point is that Artscroll is a BUSINESS that is run by Ashkenazim.
They know that books about Ashkenazim will sell. The formulaic Gedolim books sell. But books by/about sefardim don’t sell (as well). They did Rabbi Mansour and a haggadah because they would sell. Rabbi Mansour has some star power with his various internet outlets, and everyone appreciates the Hagaddah, the most widely published and commented sefer throughout history.
Furthermore, as Ashkenazim from Eastern Europe, they will work with what they know. Nothing against Sefardim, Temanim, Mizrachim, Yekkes, etc.
MDGParticipant“In 1931 92% of Jews were Ashkenazic (based on an academic study of worldwide Jewry at the time.) It’s probably a bit less today. “
I’m sure that there were more than 8% Sefardim. Like then, the Ashkenazim ignore the Sefardim.
MDGParticipant“There are 5.8 million Jews in all of Israel according to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (and that’s including their overcounting with non-halachic Jews.) Of those 3 million are Ashkenazim and 1.8 million are Sephardim/Mizrachim according to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics.”
You first quote 5.8 million, but your numbers add up 4.8 million.
MDGParticipant“And BTs don’t act that either! “
TV shows have to be about abnormal people, otherwise they are just boring.
BTW, I just had a BT spend Shabbat with me. He’s been BT for over 20 years but still felt like he had to prove himself. Most people, by that time, have already settled in, but I guess some don’t. Granted my guest was nowhere near as hard core as the BT in Verplank.
MDGParticipant“But why did they make the Yeshivish guy (what ever his name is!) sooo extreme?”
He portrays a BT wannabe. He is trying too hard.
MDGParticipant“The average age to get married in the secular world is around 30. Why is it 20 in the Jewish world? “
Because they live immoral lives. When Goyim were more moral, they married younger on average.
MDGParticipant“Going to Kevarim on Eruv Rosh HaShanah is not a new minhag.”
Yes, I have learned that, but that does not include R”H , where the Torah says that one should be with his family.
Charles Short – that was mean and uncalled for. I have some major theological issues with some of frum my brethren, but I try not to name call.
Goq – Uman is some backwater town which I beleive is in the Cossack-infested Ukraine. It’s not easy to get to and therefore takes extra money for transportation.
MDGParticipant“Experience it before you challenge it. “
That’s like saying I once heard, “Don’t condemn a sin until you’ve tried it.”
MDGParticipantohr chodeshsaid:
“The Torah and Halacha tell us that women aren’t to learn (with few exceptions) Torah Shebalpeh.”
My impression is that a man is not supposed to teach a woman, not that she can’t learn. The Nafka Mina is that if she buys her own Artscroll and learns by herself, then she is allowed to.
.
“Pretty chauvinistic to decide if she has time she shouldn’t use it for her brain, but rather help someone with their housework.”
Housework needs to get done and someone has to do it. We all have our jobs and priorities. I think that most men here would rather be learning full time, but life has its demands and most of us can’t learn full time (see Brachot 36b).
MDGParticipant“MDG: It really is none of your business. “
When money is lost from the community, it effects all of us.
“Whatever someone wants to give to tzedaka, they give, not a penny more or less.”
I do give more when people ask for more. You can ask those that knock on my door. I find it hard to say no when people sincerely ask. I’m sure many others are like that.
MDGParticipant“Lastly, go one time and you will understand. I have yet to make the trip to Uman myself, but I have been to places where davening is on a different plane than it is in my hometown, and there is no comparision. The people, the place, the time, all these things add up to an experience that you need to be in it to understand it. “
I’ve been to rock concerts that were like that.
MDGParticipant“Why shopuld it bother you at all what someone else does with their time , etc? “
– Because it is making a cultish minhag that was never existent – not in theory, not in practice (if I’m wrong, then find me the source in Shas and poskim). Outside of Breslov, no one does this nor talks about it.
– That “minhag” is then pushed on others, and so the “minhag” spreads.
– It is supporting people that killed and hate my people.
– It’s a waste of money that causes others to squander money that would have been spent for tzedakah. In other words, ther is only so much money available to the community at large. When some is lost, it’s lost from all available money in the community.
MDGParticipant“At my bridal shower a friend who I had not seen in a few months who had recently moved to the uws showed up in jeans and I was taken a back.”
BTW, besides the problems of a lady wearing jeans in general, it seems to me that wearing jeans to bridal shower is tacky and disrespectful.
MDGParticipant“I have a lot of friends who now live on the uws and within months of moving there thy stopped keeping shabbos and more.”
It’s been quite a while since I last visited there. I guess I knew the good people there, people that were sincerely frum. OTOH, I know that a lot of people living there are not really frum, but they just like the Jewish chevra. I agree with what Health said above when speaking about intentions when coming to the UWS “It’s a vicious circle/cycle. First they become disillusioned and then they follow the crowd.”

If you learn Gemara with Tos’, then you can look up some mefarshim that you husband might have in his library. So ask you well-learned husband for a sefer or two, or better yet ask him your question outright and please get back to us.
August 6, 2012 5:36 pm at 5:36 pm in reply to: Wife/Mother sitting at head of shabbos table? #890739MDGParticipantNOMTHW,
Fear does not mean being afraid, like a he’s a tyrant. It means, in our modern terms, to have respect like not sitting in his place, not contradicting his words, etc. All this (and more) is written in the Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah 241.
MDGParticipantThere are plenty on people that are frum on the UWS and plenty that are not. It may not be the frummest place, but if he wanted to be frum there he would be.
I think that the bigger problem is your friend’s family problems. I get the impression that his becoming religious was, to some degree, looking for something to help him. And when that did not materialize, he became disillusioned. I had a friend like that – bad family situation, went to yeshiva. But at a certain point he did not get whatever he was looking for (emotionally or socially or whatever). His turning point was in yeshiva (I saw the apathy coming on), although he was still going with the flow while still there. After a few years he was totally OTD. I would guess your friend is similar.
MDGParticipantI’m suffering through Daf Heh 🙂
I wanna head start for Shabbat and Eruvin.
MDGParticipantAssuming that the OP is telling the truth, which I have no reason not to, then I cannot believe that she is a feminist. AFAIK a femmeroid would: 1) only learn enough to say “I can learn like the men” just to prove a point and she would not learn for 10 years 2) would not respect a full-time learning man because of the patriarchal system. 3) not have so many kids.
BTW the Mishna (and subsequently Rambam and Sh”A) use the expression on not teaching a daughter Torah She-Baal Peh. To me that implies that a lady can go on her own and learn like from Artscroll. Speaking of Artscroll, I heard that the way their editors know if the wrote clearly was to have a smart frum woman (who never learned Gemara) read their explanation.
MDGParticipantFound this on the Web:
Kimchis’ sons did not necessarily die in the role of cohen gadol. The gemara in Yoma describes how on two occasions her son the cohen gadol Yishmael ben kimchis was in the “shuk” on Yom Kippur “between avodas” to meet an “Arab king” and the king’s saliva hit him, rendering Y ben K tamei and unfit to finish the avoda of the day. On each occasion a different brother stepped in for him to finish up as cohen gadol. Possibly something similar happened with the other four.
Per the magid shiur where we are learning Yoma (I won’t name him as I did not ask his permission), Kimchis is described in the Yerushalmi as being like soles (fine flour) compared to other women, i.e., particularly tzanua, thus the name Kimchis (from kemach, or flour). Our rav pointed out that the sota brings kemach (flour) of barley, the only”kemach” brought as an offering, and it is an inferior sort of flour, reflecting the sota’s status. All other flour offerings are based on the finer wheat-based soles. Kimchis, being compared to soles is a kind of antidote for the sota.
July 24, 2012 5:33 am at 5:33 am in reply to: Rav Yisroel Lau will be the guest speaker at the siyum Hashas #887720MDGParticipantThe first Temple was destroyed (partially) because of idol worship, which is just like kefira. The second was destroyed because of sinas chinam. Considering that the second golus is much longer and more bloody, we see that sinas chinam is much worse.
The Gemara in Yevamos (62b) says that the talmidim of R’ Akiva died because they were not noheig honor one to another. It does not say that they felt disrespect, rather that they did not act in ways of respect. Having respect, while not showing it, is not enough.
MDGParticipantFriends,
Can we get back on topic – a women has to deal with her husband who has a bad taava.
MDGParticipantDaasYochid,
I don’t think that ZD was bashing groups of sincere Jews. He was bashing individuals that are slobs. It also sounds to me that he was defending those that seem to be too interested in their looks.

After all, he really should not be there.
MDGParticipant“DaasYochid Oomis’ house! 🙂 “
Considering how she chimes in on recipe discussions, I would beleive that.

MDGParticipantI don’t think I’ll stop listening to him.
But wait, I never plan to start.
MDGParticipantI really like what Bless You has said above.
It seems to me that one other thing that she can do is to show him more love and attention. My theory is like this: he feels neglected, so he turns to imaginary companionship to fill the void. She should not make him feel bad, as that will worsen things.
MDGParticipantBy the way, fly swatters are illegal in Poland.
It’s forbidden to kill the national bird.
MDGParticipantyentingyenta,
Great Work ! Congrats!

MDGParticipantGoq,
I liked you comment so much that I got my friend Rachel to see it. She was reluctant, but I kind of rammed it to her, and then she said not baaaad.
I always appreciate how you can weave a light word into a discussion. It changes the whole fabric of the discussions. I do knot know what we’d do without you. Some may think that your humor is only for a fringe few, but I’d be blue without you. You give me the warm and fuzzies. I mean it sincerely and I’m not trying to pull the wool over your eyes.
June 19, 2012 4:44 pm at 4:44 pm in reply to: I might have a magnetic field thats causing nails to extrude from my walls? #880592MDGParticipantI got this from searching on the web:
In newly constructed homes it is common to see nails/screws popping through drywall. This is due to the wood studs and joists having a high moisture content when a house is constructed rapidly (the old “time is money concept”) and the drywall is applied to the studs before they have had any time to dry. Studs will dry out within the wall space and when this happens dry wall screws can pop as a result.
Moisture could be causing the nails popping out, especially if they are corroded. What I would be most concerned is hidden mold growing behind the dry wall. You need to check and see what might be causing the problem first.
Questions to ask:
How is Your Family’s Health?
Does anyone have allergies or asthma?
Does anyone in your home always seem to have a cold-a runny nose, wheezing, coughing, and headaches?
Do these problems go away when they leave home for a while?
Are there infants, children, or elderly people living in the household?
How Can You Tell if Mold is Growing in Your Home?
Can you see mold growing anywhere?
Is there mildew growing on clothes or towels?
Does any part of your house or apartment smell musty or moldy?
Do you see color changes on walls or floors that you can’t wipe off?
Is There Moisture in Your Home That Could Cause Mold to Grow?
June 19, 2012 5:50 am at 5:50 am in reply to: I might have a magnetic field thats causing nails to extrude from my walls? #880590MDGParticipantHi scissors, nice to hear from you 🙂
Maybe your kids got hold of a screwdriver and are “fixing” things.
MDGParticipant“I just posed the question if using the holocaust as a reference to personal pain is fair. “
I’m not sure if it’s fair to compare, but I don’t think that it makes an effective argument. We all have different problems, some worse than others. I don’t think that one can compare different sufferings.
Goq, the next time you see her, stomp on her foot real hard and say, “Don’t worry, the holocaust was much worse and many people have done well after that.” (First wait for the screaming to stop.)
MDGParticipantBack on topic:
I sometimes wear a hat at the Shabbat table because I don’t actively take it off. I like to stay dressed up for kidduch and hamotsi. I am also inclined to keep it on the whole meal if I can’t find a place to put my hat when I am a guest.
MDGParticipantThe MB does not say both head coverings are (were) needed. Just that the real hat is (was) needed.
MDGParticipantI can’t say that it’s unconstitutional. AFAIK the right to free speech means that you can express whatever ideas you want, but you can’t say it in an improper way.
MDGParticipantThe earliest harvests of new grains happens in late July (oats and barley) and Early August (wheat).
Find the book online “A Guide to Chodosh” and subscribe to the e-updates so that you can get the exact dates for the year.
