Yes a person is instructed to give at least a certain amount to tzedekah. Even the poor person is obligated to give something. But when I see so many people struggling and the yeshivas are having trouble, people out of work. It just makes you wonder, if the rich people are misusing the funds Hashem gave them.

Tough question. First of all can you ask each of them to be civil for their grandaughters sake? Secondly, if that is not possible, can you just have the other parent over, seperately, and have a little party & cake just with that grandparent?

I am just saying and based on thought. I learned that Hashem the wealthy the means to distribute the money to the poor. Being that is the case and not everyone is rich and there are many people struggling out there, if those wealthy people didn’t spend on the extra neccessites in life from the money that Hashem gave to them to give to others, then don’t where would that money be coming from?

I think that, not everyone is capable of wearing a hat and jacket all the time. I think though, as a parent myself, don’t push the issue. Try to keep him motivated. Try the subtle approach. Maybe find tapes on the subject and play them at home or when he is in the car. My son just mentioned that he learned in Shulchan Aruch that a man should wear 2 coverings when you daven. Although my son mentioned that is what he learned in Shulchan Aruch, but is not sure how the REMA paskens(we are sefardi).

Amazing poem for all to learn from

Hud and shaatra- how do you go on and say people who disagree with you, that’s its jealousy?? You don’t know me. Trust me. I try to look at people with an ayin tov. I am the last person to be jealous of anyone. If person has, good for them, but, the wealthy do have a VERY serious postion in life. Hashem did not make every one wealthy, in this world, He entrusted a few people to be the distributors and ensure, that they give to the rest. I am not saying the poor, should receive free handouts, but there are ways to make sure people will get that they could somehow work for it. In anycase, there is a very famous mashal, of a wealthy man who tells, his sons that, he wants them to come visit him, and to bring his whole family, spare no expense, because what ever you spend out to respect me, I will re-imburse, so the man goes out and purchases the finest clothing he can and outfits his family to the best clothes money can buy. Meanwhile, his brother and his family are very poor. This brother can’t even got money for food let alone, clothing. The poor brother comes with his family dressed in their rags to visit his father. Meanwhile the richer brother comes with his family impecablly dressed, the wife in the height of fashion, the children also elegantly clothed. He is waiting and finally meets with his father, and he gives him the bill for all the clothing he purchased. His father looks at the bill and says, I am sorry, I can not pay you back, and the man asks why not? and the father said. I said I would reimburse you for all the money that was spent in my honor, but you did not fulfill my wishes. And the son is what do you mean? We are all dressed respectfully, we are dressed in the finest clothing to honor you. The father tells his son, “you did not dress for my honor, you dressed for your honor, If you did it out of respect for me, then you would have made sure your brother and his family were also dressed decently, but you only thought of yourself, therefore I can not pay you back”

Hud, Bev, Ames, & Shaatra, you may think that people can spend what they want, you know what? you are right, just know that you have that free choice to spend how you like, just know who you have to answer too after 120 years. If you are rich, and you spend, just realize, that money may have gone to put bread on someones table, or went to purchase a coat for a child with no coat.

Like I said earlier, it revolves about being tzinut, Ames. Being tziniut not only involves clothing hemlines, sleevelines or neckline, tziniut includes not wearing things that call attention to oneself. Celebrities wear designer labels to call attention to themselves. Actually, the designers send these people their products to wear/use to call attention to themselves. Most people buy designers just for the designers, not quality issues. People that are super rich, use the bags a few times and then give them away. I don’t think they use things for quality issues on products. If wearing garbage became poplar, some people are so fickle, they would wear garbage.

I guess it bothers me that people buy designer labels and are wasting their money, the same way it bothers me that people who can’t afford luxuries and buy things to keep up with the “Cohen’s”. I am sorry but most people copy what the rich do. They are held to a higher standard, then the poor folks.

Yoshi, I was reading somewhere of women getting back problems from carrying such huge handbags.

I am a nervous person by nature. I try to carry as little as possible. If I have CC’s or cash, I wear something with pockets rather then keep it in my pocketbook. I really try to be inconspicuous. Now that winter is coming, my Landsend parka with the gazillion pockets, will be handy. I am all about comfort. It could be the ugliest coat in the world, but if it will keep me warm, Stylish, Smylish.. I could care less what anyone thinks.

Ames, I try to look at people for whats on the inside, not by what they wear or have. I could care less about the outside, it their neshoma that is special. I don’t think sporting designer labels, makes one above others. I am just trying to understand for example, Landsend makes good quality clothing, right, they have a stylish leather boot, selling for under $200.00?? Meanwhile Designer X, has a similar style selling for $800.00. Please justify to me the need to spend $600.00 for the same boot just because it has Designer X’s logo splashed on the side??

I had a friend who lives in Europe, who went to Brazil for a Bar Mitzvah. Her host asked her if she was planning on wearing her necklace out. My friend was like why? Because she was told that they would mug her. My friend is like but it is fake. The host was like, in Brazil it doesn’t matter. They steal anything here. Her host went to her and yanked on her necklace and asked her if it hurt, which of course it did. The fake necklace was promptly taken off and left at home. She had to purchase a little cheap watch ring, just to have the time. People who live in America don’t realize how lucky they are they can walk the streets, (most of the time) and not get mugged. My point, in those countries, the only place you can wear your jewelry is at home, never on the streets.

If that was the case, then why do famous design houses have to davka stick their name promently in front of a product and dare to charged $1,000.00. If you want to feel good and boost your ego by sporting a thousand dollar pocketbook, kol hakavod.

I for one, don’t need a sharp bag to make me look stylish. I am happy running around in my $20.00 bag from Avon. It has nothing to do about being jealous about what others have. I don’t go around thinking, “oh, I wish I could have that pocketbook or shoes”

About Jewelry, that needs to paled down as well. We are so use to living in the States, where we don’t have to worry about necklaces being ripped off ones neck. In Latin America, even if you were costume jewelry, you are asking for trouble.

I was taking about people who purchase “Designer” pocketbooks, also known as “statement” bags. Exactly what are they trying to state by having them? This topic also has alot to do with the issue of Tsinut and not drawing attention to yourself.

h2 you are so right. Most of these designers make their clothing in the same factories and many have cheaper lines available. People who buy clothing just for the logo, are being ripped off. But LLBean and Landsend do make good quality items that are guaranteed by them. I wouldn’t really classify them as a designer label. Their products, are reasonably priced as well. In that case, buying from the above listed companies is worth spending the few extra dollars in the long run.

All name brands are made for marketing and making money.. If people are so gullible and fickle to spend thousands on a pocket book just to show off a name brand or designer, when there are pocket books that, quality wise are just as good, and thousands less, then something is very wrong with society.

truthsharer, we usually try to do what the Rabbis tell us to do. In this case where the question and the answer are very clearly stated. Ames asked a question and her Rav gave her an answer. He said No. Ames knows her Rav is Makpid on it. There are no further questions to ask.

Cherrybim, Well, at least I know I have done my part. I make sure my head is covered and my skirts are past my knees, sitting or standing. Trust me I am not a person who has people looking at her. I tend to keep a low profile and never wear anything attention getting.

Unfortunately, it has become acceptable for many frum women and girls to wear straight, tight, skirts that are just above or about the knees.

Truthsharer, while I wouldn’t wear a Burka, you should know, that when Moslem women are dressed modestly it gives the Yismaelim power over the Jews. We as jewish women have to be dressed modestly according to Halacha.

Gezuntheit, I agree with you. I just tell my husband and boys, just try to look at the ground, instead of around, you can find some money that way. Just the other day, I found $20 bucks…

Some women get really offended when the tzinus issue is brought up and go on the defensive and say that men shouldn’t look at a woman anyway. Those women don’t realize how hard it is for a man not to look. As a woman, it is our responiblity to be as modestly dressed as possible according to the Halacha and when not dressed according to Halacha, you are causing others to sin.

Also, as a side thing, my husband learnt that you can not use an eruv unless you went(or your husband went) to shul friday night and heard that the eruv was up.

South African Journeys by Gita Gordon, this book of fiction, was written a few years ago, it’s about 2 yound women from Europe, who go to South Africa to meet their prospective grooms. One of the girls is not happy with her future husband so she wants to switch to the other man. Some how their lives are intertwined.

That was one book I enjoyed.

A few months ago, I purchased a book called “A different World” it’s the true story about a convert who becomes Chassidish. Very interesting story.

Miracle ride, was released a few months ago. This book, based on a true story,is about a young woman and her challange of having an illness. She eventually meets her bashert as well. It was very heartwarming and I loved how this woman dealt with her illness with honesty and wit. A few of her stories made me laugh.

Well, I like to have a heart to heart discussion with Hashem. Best time to do it is alone. Close the doors and just basically tell Hashem exactly what is on your mind. Let Him know all your hopes and fears. Things you want to improve on in your Midos. Hashem sent us to this world to improve ourselves. He knows we can’t be perfect. He just wants us to try and the rest will follow.

I want to tell you a story of something that happened to me. A few years ago, I was really into reading Tehillim. I told Hashem, I could just read all your praises day and night if I just had the time and not have to worry about the housework and the cleaning. Do you want to know what happened?? The cleaning lady who I had to let go a few months earlier, because finances would not permit(she wanted more money), came back and asked if I needed her back. Hashem actually sent someone to me, so I could read Tehillim full time. Unfortunately, my emunah is weak and I told her no. My point is, when you come to Hashem and you mean what you say, truly from your heart and soul, especially in a an area you want to improve in, Hashem will surely listen to you and send you the help you need.

Good luck in all you do and Tizku l’shanim rabot!!
