Syrian, the reality is that your 95% is impossible!! I can guarantee you it is not possible. First of all the entire community is not all able to afford the rents and the price of the day camps. With rentals for homes starting in the $10,000 for the whole summer and not to mention that day camps in Deal are even more costlier than in Broolyn, coupled with fact of commuting back and forth for Husbands to Manhattan/NYC to the Jersey shore and even taking the train is expensive as well!! With Tutions costing so much. It is impossible for all the Sephardim to be in Deal. Are you in Brooklyn in the summer?? There are quite a few day camps that cater exclusively to the Sephardic community with tons of kids who remain in Brooklyn, not to mention the Askenaz day camps as well. I know because I send my Kids to Ashkenaz Day camps and the sephardic kids most of the time have their own bunks. BYA, Mesores, Chaim Berlin Ruach, Ohr Shraga… just to name a few. Also, alot of the frum sephardim go away to the country. Actually, in one of the schools it is MANDATORY for the High School boys to attend sleepaway camp. Also, there are even a few sephardim who even are in Monsey for the summer. I can’t believe that you as a syrian, are sterotyping yourself. Most of my friends are in Brooklyn.

Syrian- told you, have to explain things. Most people don’t know what Mechse is (any vegetable stuffed within it’s inch of it’s life with meat in rice, spiced with allspice and cinnamon, could be squash, tomato, potato, onions.. Hamid is a sweet and sour soup with veggies and meatballs traditionally served over rice. Fasulya is a bean dish made with/out meat. you forgot the Yebra(stuffed grape leaves or AKA Dolmas) I have in my freezer if anyone wants to pick it up.

“BTW think before you put us down”… “BTW, I know your wrong” Syrian, why do you think Ames was putting you down?? My husband is of Syrian origin and I did not feel she was putting “us” down. I grew up in the community and I can guarantee you 95% do not all go to Deal. And tons of Sephardic girls do go to sleep away camp. So far, many posters have said that they even knew of some SY girls who did go. The way the community has grown more religous, B’H, Fortunately, the only camps these girls can go to are Ashkenaz sleepway camps. There they get to meet other religous Ashkenaz girls. We are all Jews and I think it is wonderful that they get to meet and befriend other jewish girls. Well, need to get some ZZ’s. Have a good night.

I thought this was cute and funny. I just gave my daughter a bath. She kind of stayed a wee bit too long in the water. As I was dressing her, she looked at her hands and said quite innocently, “Hey why do my hands look like Grandma’s??” I couldn’t stop laughing after I heard that.

102030… Who said anything about insecurities?? I am not wealthy. If I made a simcha , I couldn’t care less about what other people thought if I kept it simple. I am talking about the waste I see, especially in regards to the flowers. The wealthy have a very big responsibly on their shoulders as far as how they spend their money. Hashem made them the keepers of the wealth to give out the poor people. Do people actually need to have luxury cars and furs?? Don’t you think Hashem will ask why did you buy a Lexus, when you can get a Toyota?? That money you blew for the Lexus was meant for so and so. How did those items serve in your Avodas Hashem?? Trust me, I am not jealous of the wealthy. I am quite content with what Hashem gave me. We are told that we are in Galus and we should hide our wealth, because the Goyim get envious of us. Those who are wealthy among us should not advertise their wealth.

I think that is why I am not too crazy of the personal conversations I see in the CR. I think they get people in trouble, as in Brooklyn’s case. I myself am trying to stick to the posted thread and not go off on a tangent.

At a recent Bar Mitzvah, it was kept very simple. No flowers and no centerpieces. No desert table. The Men and boys danced and it was very leibidig(lively). Wish everyone could go that simple. Who are people trying to impress having fancy parties?? When I hear of the thousands spent on flowers which will be thrown in the trash tomorrow, it makes me sad. Just because Hashem gave some people more money does not mean they have to throw it out like that. Even more so if they don’t have the money to spend.

For suggestions on parkings = go shopping with a friend/friends. It’s kind of a car pool for mothers. The driver can stay in the car while the others shop. She can look for parking in the meantime. So many stores offer curbside delivery as well. Most stores in Brooklyn offer delivery. You just have everything brought in to your house. You do not have to shlep 20 bags in your home. It is actually more convienent that way (for me anyway). I make sure all the fridge items go in one box. My local store even has stickers that say “fridge” so you know which box to put away first. Produce go in another box and other groceries in others. You don’t get that service outside New York. (or lakewood)

Smoking should be made assur by the Rabonim. I wish the yeshivas would be more stricter on it. We all know about the dangers of smoking, It just infuriates me when I see people smoking. My husband saw an a aquaintance friend smoking, maybe he was 15 – 16 years old. These kids, maybe because they are so young think that they are invinsible and that smoking will not effect them. I think the parents and the the schools should start warning kids from when they are in pre-school. When they are in elementary, they should be shown how smoking effects the lungs (graphic pictures and all)

I agree with you. I really wish people with stick with the posted threads. I like to hear personal stories/opinions pertaining to the topic.. It seems just like a regular chatroom sometimes. Maybe their should be just be a seperate room for those who just want to “chat” with each other. When the topics do lead to personal conversations, sometimes I just think, “why don’t they just exchange email addresses with each other??”.

You know, when someone looks at this thread and thinks of food and how it turned into a discussion of origins, it is all related in a way to a chulent/hammin. What is in a chulentt? Anything you want. It is one big mix if various types of food.

Itzik, looking forward to reading your post B’H. That sounds like it is going to be an intresting read.

syrian, jelly belly makes something call “BEAN BOOZLED” They have one normal flavor and one horrid flavor – same color. You get to figure out which is the yucky one. Skunk spray, ear wax, baby wipes, toothpaste, are some of the available flavors you may get. It’s a big hit with the kids. I personally have not tried it, nor would I let my kids try it. I saw it few weeks ago by where else, Pomegrante, a few weeks back when they had a full display, last weeks there were only 2 packs left. So someone is buying that stuff. If I were you I’d be careful of anyone offering my Jelly Bellies, you might be “Bean Boozled. Oh,yeah they had something like that in the Harry Potter books, too. (and no, I do not work for Pomergrante, in case someone maybe wondering, just shopped there a few times.)

Also, Chock full of nuts – ground coffee 11-13 oz is $1.97. I didn’t buy but my mother did. Celestial Seasonings teas are 3/$5.00 You can go to Shoprite.com and check out their weekly circular and find out locations and directions. If you do allow circulars dropped off at your home (in Brookyn, if you have a sign requesting no unsolicited papers on your property, you will not get these),BTW, there was a Celestial Seasoning coupon in the coupons section.
