oomis, If that was truly the case, it should have been worded that way. Runny noses seems benign compared to “prone to illness” or “history of allergies.” My wife is allergic to certain food types and only one of my children has allergies that are mostly unrelated to hers.

I heard that you should have in mind yourself or someone who needs a shidduch when saying Kiddush Levana. This was at a Shavuos night shiur given by Harav Laibel Katz. His source was a sefer written by the Steipler or one of his sons, if I recall correctly.

A Rov at a shiur recently said he heard the following: “I hear the boy’s siblings have runny noses. I don’t want……”

I didn’t know that runny noses was hereditary. Should Dor Yeshorim be testing for this? 🙂

I recently heard a shiur by a famous Rov from NY. He was expressing ideas on mitigating the Shidduch Crisis. One idea was, with permission of the Rabonim of the neighborhood/community (he expressed this factor a few times) someone sponsor a shiur in their home, where someone says Divrei Torah, invite (older) single men and women. Afterward there will be “facilitators” to (intelligently) set up matches.

From this I see a few things: 1. approval of the local rabonim 2. meeting that involves divrei torah 3. controlled environment. He had a few other interesting ideas as well.

My BC and other docs have my transliterated Hebrew name: Yosef. Where I work, I tell people they can call me “Yossi” figuring that it’s easier than Yosef and anyway, that’s what e/o else calls me. My name has been pronounced YO see, YO she, YAH see…

I’ve worked with an offshore contact by the name “Sheetal.” Perhaps her hair was used in some wigs around town. 😉

Helpful, I’d like you to explain that to two groups of people: 1) People who are our liaisons to our gov’t and gov’ts around the world and 2) People who needed and / or benefitted because of members of group 1.

One must admit that there is a huge difference between what the United States calls education and the “education” that was forced on the Volozin Yeshiva.

Sunday night is not for Shabbos leftovers! For many people, there is enough time on Sunday to prepare a meal. Now other nights of the week when there is less time to prepare, we may have of the leftovers if it is not unappealing. I myself eat leftover chulent for lunch on Mondays. I am married, have children and in my 30’s. I noticed my stomach is not as strong as it used to be so Monday afternoon chulent may stop sooner than I anticpate. On the other hand, you increase the strength of a muscle by exercising it. I’ll decide when the time gets closer.

I heard it has to be 40 consecutive days. I also heard that you should say it for someone else (and they say it for you) following the principle of you and someone else needing the same thing and you daven for them, you get answered as well.

    That’s just what I heard.

in reply to: Blood Drives, Giving Blood #1157702

I started when I was 17. Gave religiously. Then someone in Yeshiva put me on his donor list. I forget whether it was for Chai Lifeline or Bikur CHolim…When someone needed blood he would send 2 or 3 guys to which ever hospital it was (usually NYU, sometimes Mt. Sinai) and we gave for a specific CHoleh. Once I got married and started working I “slacked off” a bit because of my schedule. I have gone to some local blood drives. Then they arranged a blood drive at work (for NY Blood Center). I asked my Rov if I can give. He said it was OK. I think it’s a Kiddush Hashem for people out on Long Island to see a frumme yid giving blood. I have given platelets for specific cancer patients (through a Chai Lifeline “agent”). My only issue is that it is time consuming (1.5 – 2 hours vs. 20 – 30 min. for whole blood).

Wolf: Actually #3, all strict followers of Rav Moshe listen up: Rav Moshe Feinstein felt that they are mezalzel Shabbos. The quote that I heard from one of his close talmidim is that one can run an entire business on Timers. THat’s why he permitted its use only to control lights.

THAT BEING SAID, the Lord gave us a brain/technology to be used. The gemara mentions in Chulin about various foods that are assur, to which Hashem created a kosher item that tastes just like it. So if we find an honest way “around” things, it is our duty to publicize it.

So this kid is stopping traffic in flatbush on East 27 street, (stands in front of your vehicle so you can’t proceed). I can tell he’s under the influence. I roll down my window and he says “Chayav Inish Livsumi” he probably wanted to say “Kol haposhet yad nosnim lo” He continued to say that he’s from Yeshiva XYZ…. so I gave him a small amount. I’m not a rich guy, I don’t drive a BMW/Lexus/Infiniti/etc. So he didn’t like the amount I gave so he throws it back at my 7 year old son behind me and says “Here’s shalach manos for your son” …meanwhile there are cars behind me honking their horns…. My father taught me that one should not curse (I don’t mean th filthy-mouth kind) so let me spin it this way: He should work an honest day in his life trying to support a family and understand my position.

This morning I had a short conversation with a less affiliated “brother” We were talking about Purim and the weather. He said his mother says that the weather on holidays G-d doesn’t give us bad weather. So I mentioned about spending Purims in the past with snow coming down. He replied that maybe she meant High Holidays. But I say isn’t Purim a High Holiday? (puns intended!)

If you find yourself constantly squinting, you should change the screen resolution to lower numbers. Changing the font size is application specific, so you’d have to do it to every application (Word, Excel, IE etc.) and it only changes the letter size. Screen resolution takes care of everything. The only downside is that you can fit less items on the screen.

The key is to leave the traps in their path. How do you know their path? My brother-in-law’s parents were exterminators (they retired and sold the business). He basically told me that mice have no sphincters so whatever they eat goes through their system pretty quickly and you’ll see droppings almost on the spot. I bought 2 rat zappers when my apartment was having problems. All I did was put in batteries, set it in their suspected path. When the “mouse caught” light was blinking I turned the trap over into a bag and reset the zapper.

I am learning Shmuel A and the Maggid Shiur (Rav Aron Chaim Lapidoth) mentioned (I forgot the source) that the Navi calls Dovid before he was Melech as “Admoni” same adjective lehavdil to Eisav. He pointed out the contrasts between the two. THen he said that Dovid should have been Yaakov Avinu’s twin. In that case, Leah would have married Dovid. THat’s why she was crying so much.

I disagree, Algebra and Geometry are used more than you think. Besides, how would you learn certain Gemaras and Tosfos in Sukka and Eruvin for example without knowledge of Geom. and Trig? Science certainly has practical real-world value e.g. how cleaning agents work, what happens if one were to mix ammonia and bleach. History can help one understand the viewpoint of a Rishon or Achron if you understand the time and environment they lived in. These are just a few examples off the top of my head.

Ok, so you need a facility that can easily handle hundreds for a smaller Yeshiva, thousands for an established bigger Yeshiva. Need the ability to have a complete A/V solution that will not conk out in the middle. You need parking facility for all the attendees. Keep in mind that there will be some high profile guests, who you need to impress at some level (venue, number of attendees, quality of food served etc.). With every investment the committee expects a return. They need to choose those with the greatest returns based on the resources on hand. This is just off the top of my head and I never arranged one of these dinners.
