anon for this: ann coulter says shocking things to balance out teh stupidity from the left. when she says these outrageous things it gets people to listen. after her outrageous comments, the rest of what she says is usually very accurate, though very conservative, and intellectually honest. she graduated cum laude and was the editor of the michigan law review (something the obama campaign claims is a big deal!)

the issue of a fire arising, it is irrelevant if parents are home or not. if the child can get out safely, the child will. in most fires where there is an unfortunate child death, the parents cannot get to the child. the proper thing is to have fire drills at 2 in the morning, alarm and all. teach the children how to get out of the house fast. no getting dressed, no looking for other family members, just get out. parents have to learn that it is repetition that saves lives. you can have a monkey baby sitting, if the child knows how to get out, he or she will. and if the parents are not home, and a fire breaks out, unless the fire was started in a questionable manner, the government will not take away the kids, as they cant in most states. a fire breaking out, technically if a child is 10 or 16 or 20, besides having the guts to jump out a window, there is not much differance, or much an adult in the house can do.

similar story, i was in the zoo, and i see a stroller with what could be no more then a 2 year old strapped in screaming his brains out, so i go over. the kid didnt look jewish per se. i start yelling out loud if this child belongs to anyone, and start to dial 911. all of the sudden, out comes a heimishe family from an exhibit that has an enter and exit in a uni-directional tunnel. meaning, they left the kid outside, entered this circular tunnel that exits in the same point. this kid could have been taken. the parents actually gave me a look, like who am i to butt in. i was seriously considering still calling 911. these parents have no brains in their head. this was in the bronx, are they nuts? people, if you see this happen, go into the store and yell on the top of your lungs!
store owners, allow for an area in the front of the store for strollers. would you like it on your cheshbon if you had just a little to do with a kidnapping. (not blaming store owners, the blame is 100% on parents. but the guilt will be there since alot of these stores have no stroller policies.)
duvdl: not true. ny does not have any set rules as to when a child may be home alone. the c.s.a of new york wont interfere after about 10 (though they advise to wait to 12), since many pediatricians claim that the age of 10 is fine to be left alone. maryland has the age of 8, and connecticut 12.
shindy: have your sister check her local csa (children services administration, or similar state agency) for the guidelines, if such exist. if she cant find them, have her make a call, and get the persons name, time/date of the call, and the personnel number of the representative that she is speaking to. get a definitive answer, and she will be ok, LEGALLY.
as to whether it is smart, it truly all depends on the 10 year old.
yossi: your kia/mercedes moshul is flawed, as i said that eh mac is more expensive when priced against the same thing in terms of specs in a pc. and if you build one yourself, you can get cases that blow the mac case out of the water in “coolness”. also, explain how a computer reflect oneself. yes, if you are one to be told what you can and cannot have, then go ahead buy a mac. i like to do things my way, and have inside my case the specs i want, not what steve jobs wants.
the reason why pcs crash alot, is because software for them is not always written well, as mac controls the software for their computer. see, with the iphone, where they are a little more lenient with their code, the software people create for it, crashes the piece of garbage and deletes data all the time. i have a pc for years, and it has never crashed on me, except once, when i moved my machine, and the video card came out a bit, and the machine froze up. shutdown, popped card into slot, and was on my way. otherwise, my computer is stable as can be. i make sure any and every piece of software going on my machine is safe. alot of people dont, and their machine becomes unstable.
sorry, but you couldnt get into anyones computer and do that. i have 3 programs that would tell me within seconds, not to mention, you need to get through my firewall. and dont think for 2 seconds that a mac is any less vulnerable to a seasoned hacker.
illini, just to let you know, there are two big graphic designer schools that have now switched to pcs. the mac is loosing ground with them, as people coming into the schools primarily know the pc interfaces, and were having trouble switching. not to mention that the c no longer lags behind in rendering of pictures and video, including 3d, of the mac.

good news is, i know why your computer is misbehaving. you are infected with mutlpile trojans, bots, and spyware/adware/.
bad news, You wont be able to fix it. i cops you, because someone who does know what they are doing can. depending on what your financial status is, i suggest the following. wither bring it into a mom and pop shop, and get ripped off, but if you can afford it, who cares, at least your machine is fixed. or get a thumb drive, and put all the documents, pictures movies, etc on to it that you need. then format the computer. this can be done by either using the cd’s that came with the pc, or if it has a recovery partition, then there will be a utility during initialization (boot up) that will load the recovery tool. hit that, usually one of the function buttons at top of keyboard, and format the pc back to setting at purchase. walla, all clean!
(personally, unless you have programs installed that there is no way you will be able to reinstall later, you should wipe it, because it is really very hard to truly clean a machine.)

kitzur_dot_net, ok, now i know you dont know much about computers in their technical terms (not that there is anything wrong about that), you are clearly either a developer or web designer. i am a network engineer, so this stuff is my specialty (as i have no clue what teh whole asp/php and sql stuff you talked about is). office 2007 is a completely different program, from the ground up. yes, they added graphical interfaces that blow the old ones out of the water, but the actual system is very different. for one, it is all xml compliant.
side point, opera stole that from firefox plugins. as for microsoft being “copycaters”, well so is mac. gui was zerox not apple. at least bill gates pays royalties!
as for who crashes more often, worp perfect, after version 12, is garbage compared to office, and it does 1 tenth of the stuff. office blows all other suites like it out of the water.
as for adobe, it is made for macs. the upgrades come out for them, up to cs2, which was simultaneous, first.
the ibm processor, which all pcs are built, is a far superior chipset. both intel and amd, the 2 largest ibm chipset manufacturers, just blew the mac chip out of the water. the mac chip in early 00’s maxed out, the technology met its peak, where the intel chip is still creating breakthroughs in micro computing.
i have been using office 07 for over a year, and it never crashed on me, or any of my clients, at least not any more then any other program. macs have constant problems with their mice (wireless) since syncing them is a pain in the neck. macs use alot more electricity (at a time of high bills, this is a bad thing) then your average pc does. (this according to trade magazine tests i saw about 6 months ago. it was minimal, but still there. they over heat alot. but they are gorgeous to look at. so is a bouquet of flowers, but that doesnt mean i want to store all my valuable info on it.
and dont even get me started on the ipod. sony archos, cowan, iriver all make comparable or better products then the ipod, and they are cheaper. and they dont mess with music format and licenses!

Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry’s replaced the cow’s milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers-and cows-would reap the benefits.
Using cow’s milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer’s health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America’s leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow’s milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease-America’s number one cause of death.
Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.
And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can’t produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to 17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can’t even turn around.

to everyone here, there is no halchic basis for a rebbe to hit a child. when the gemora says a rebbi may hit his talmid, the rebbe must be a rebbe muvhak, and the talmid, a talmid muvhak. i dont know of any child or elementary rebbe who fits either category. it is assur to hit a child not your own, and illegal. rebbeim who hit are never god rebbeim, which proves that a good rebbe is just that, a teacher. hitting should never be taught. if my kids were to ever come home and tell me their rebbe or teacher hit them, regardless of what they did, save endangering themselves or others in a life threatening manner, the rebbe would be getting a one way ticket to the emergency room, on his way to a jail cell.
ses and shindy, i have friends and relatives that will only date redheads. it is a joke, and alot of guys really do like redheads. it was a joke, as i specifically wrote, get over it. people have been making fun of redheads for hundreds of years, even sir arthur conan doyle had an episode of sherlock holmes just about that.
pashuteh yid, youre info is correct for the most part, though youre idea of 2 meals is no good. you are actyually supposed to eat 5 meals a day. all trainers and body builders do this. it is the best way to stay satiated, and not eat garbage. the meals are to be smaller, but still 5. i dont know the specifics how its done, but i know certain meals are just proteins, like chicken, and others should have carbs. but that has to come with exercise. i for one eat 5 meals a day, and dont excercise on bit, and am, lets say how they say in the shidduch circles, “athletically” built (which never made sense to me, as athletes are thin usually.)
devorah, youve mistaken oomis15’s point. i can see how. she was in no way attacking rashi, chas vesholom. she was saying in his repsect, just because he wrote something, doesnt mean that he couldnt have meant something other then the way some rebbeim in 3rd grade explain it. the other explanations as to what the rashi may mean actually make alot more sense then what i was ever taught. it never made any sense that after 80 years of being married, he never knew what sora looked like. the 2 explanations fit very nicely with the words of rashi, and it wouldnt be the first time rashi should be taken in a non literal sense.
jphone, dont go and make assumptions from a tshuva of rav moshe. the only basis for tznius in terms of dress is from sefer micha. this is not me saying it, its the gemorrah. (check my previous post as to the makor of tznius.)

also, you say that hilchos karbonos dont apply today, and for that you are wrong. it is well known that had teh israelis not given control of the har habayis the year after we took control of the east side of jerusalem, we would have been able, and possibly mechuyav, to bring the korbon pesach. (i dont know the ligistics behind this, but i do know that this is true.)
you still have not answered how we are supposedly to be made to believe that all of the sudden in 1984 eating meat becomes a bad thing because, well, peta said so. that is nonsense. there is inherently nothing wrong with killing an animal and eating eat.
also, how do you get around eating meat on shabbos and yuntif, which according to many reshonim and achronim. and dont say mekubalim also dont eat meat, because the real ones do. yes in the past some have not, but when you are on their madrega you can learn all teh kaballah you want, and on a different plane of existence you can also refrain from eating meat.

feif un, the reason we dont kill someone for murdering a fetus, is because there is a safek whether it would have survived, as it is in a state of near death. so for that reason we side with caution as to capital punishment.

kitzur_dot_net: you are correct about rabban gamliel, except two things. one he was a nassi, and had the power to issue takanos. and two, in that takana he was issuing, it was for kavod hames, something that is considered more importatnt then kavod hachayim. it was not made for teh serviving family, but for the actual person being eulogized.
also, if he is to be your source for issuing takkonos, are you aware that the wealthy of his day made weddiong that lasted days. and the poor just had a minyan. so i will take your proof and say that it is clear from rabban gamliel that one may NOT issue takanos for chasunas.
workinmom: you clearly have not read teh thread that was this ones predicessor. im sure alot of people on this site would consider what you wear to not be tznius, hence the question as to wha the true makor for tznius is altogether. and it does make a differance if it is a deoraysa, or just a minhug of sorts. a minhug would mean that differant cultures would look at it differantly, a deioraysa will mean there is no discussionable gray matter. since its makor is in micha, and the gemora uses it as a baseboard for tznius, then it can be argued that tznius is a very “gray area” halacha, one that a person, with direction from a rov, may differ very differantly from another, and still be on teh same level of judaism.
