in reply to: Does anyone know the HEBREW year Rav Shlomo Freifeld was born? #1573164

adocs: You are mixing two different calendars. Since January 1, 1925 was the 5th of Teves, I used the one calendar.

in reply to: Does anyone know the HEBREW year Rav Shlomo Freifeld was born? #1573065

1925 corresponds to TAF REISH PEY HEY (5685) or TAF REISH PEY VAV (5686). Depending if he was born between Teves and Rosh Hashana or after Rosh Hashana will let you know the hebrew year.

in reply to: Fire prevention ideas #1429568

2qwerty: I know that you are not referring to the current tragedy but in listening to all the reports this may simply be an electrical fire and nothing to do with the menorah.

I am openly stating that I am speculating:

    1. The family is probably sephardi who generally light only 1 menorah (ner ish ubeiso)
    2. According to some news reports, the call to the fire department was somewhere around 2:00 AM. Unless the family was away during the day I doubt that the menorah was still lit at that time.
    3. The smoke detectors were operational and heard by the two boys on the first floor.
    4. Electrical fires are known to erupt and engulf a house in flames in just minutes.
    5. May HASHEM grant a nechomah to the Azan family.

LU: I have noticed a significant “slow down” daily around 3:00 PM EST lasting until 9:00 PM EST which would be 10:00 PM – 4:00 AM in EY. I surmised that some moderators were in EY.

in reply to: Awaiting moderation #1408615

againstallthishock: You also have to consider the possible time zone differences. I believe that some of the moderators (and there is more than just one) may live in EY and when we are posting they may be asleep. I’ve had posts sit in moderation for 3 – 5 hours.

in reply to: People Without a Rov #1404480

joseph: It’s hard to say as we have B”H (Kein ayin Harah) a large mishpacha and therefore different issues related to each individual child might cause us to go more often to the Rov. My older sons consult their rabbonim (Rosh Yeshiva, Mashgiach, Shoel Umeishiv) and do not rely solely on my Rov. So it could be as little as once a month or 2-3 times if my children are facing some sort of difficulty. As for the usual kashrus type issues, when a question arises.

in reply to: People Without a Rov #1404418

joseph: It depends. During the past 2 years, we had 4 children get engaged and married. We had to consult our Rav on various questions concerning each shidduch. In addition, we had the usual shailos: dairy toaster oven used for uncovered fleishigs; chinuch questions; some medical questions. It is hard to figure out an average as we definitely had to consult with him more than previous years.

in reply to: Awaiting moderation #1404429

Yes. I have had messages blocked. It is nothing to worry about. You can always ask the moderator why. They walk a very fine line and most of the time the reason for a message not being posted is because one violated one of the posting rules.

in reply to: Replacing Talis and Retzuos (on Tefilin) #1397700

Sorry for bumping this thread from last week.

ubiquitin wrote: “This is why it is the generally the weekday tallis (worn more often and usually for longer time) that is used to wrap a nifter which he “wears” in the olam haemes after having worn it for years in this world.”

I cannot say what is “generally done” but the Nitei Gavriel brings down that some say the shabbos tallis and some say the weekday tallis. (Hilchos Aveilus 47:10)

    http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=46539&st=&pgnum=241

He also states that in EY, they carry the meis with his tallis do not bury with the tallis. (Hilchos Aveilus 47:7)

in reply to: Struggling with Cholov Yisrael.. #1386255

ZD: I agree with your comment. Have a CS milk dated “Sell by October 14” that is still tasting fresh.

T22T: To my knowledge Pride of the Farm is not available in the stores in the 5 boroughs (might be in Lakewood). Of the common brands found in Brooklyn, Golden Flow milk probably lasts the longest.

in reply to: Struggling with Cholov Yisrael.. #1385946

moshe1994: Your reply to rebyidd23 is nonsensical and misses the point. There are some products that do not have a CY alternative. As to your comment “If you can keep Kosher which is harder to keep (complex Halachos etc.), it should be a piece of cake keeping Cholov Yisroel.” is not exactly true when someone was brought up on Cholov Stam. There are numerous CS products available that one “gives up” to be CY (some have CY alternatives and some don’t). Kol Hakovod to those who make the switch.

The OP stated “I am going thru a tough time now “. Is it financial, psychological, physical? Nobody on this list knows and it is not anyone’s place to speculate. Rebyidd23’s original answer “Ask your Local Orthodox Rabbi” is the best answer one can give.

in reply to: What should the Second Amendment say? #1385852

Sorry Joseph but I don’t believe that the amendment should be repealed.

in reply to: No mention of the huge techailes event in Boro Park on Chol Hamoed?! #1385831

TDH: This comment of yours “I have not made any derogatory statements chas vesholom against Torah giants. (found above in 1385155) disputes what you say above: “Unfortunately, most people who comment on this, including rabbonim, have not studied it and simply make an assumption , maybe based on the status quo or whatever, that we may ignore this halachic issue. So they don’t bother to research it, and simply make bold statements against the techiles which are false and can easily be disproved in an honest dialogue, as I have seen countless times in this subject”. (found in 1385075).

How do you know what my Rav has or has not studied? Who are you to pass such judgement? I did not attend the asifa. Why? Because my rav (based on his own research) has determined that what today is called techailes may NOT BE what the Torah means by techailes. And yes, he did discuss this with the Radziner Rebbe Tzatzal in the 1970’s when my yeshiva learning the sugya in mesechta menachos.

in reply to: Tallis katan with thick tzitzis #1381486

takes22tango: Why do you say that “thicker tzitzis” is not a hiddur? If I have a personal preference and perceive that they last longer and look nicer then, to me, it is a hiddur. The fact that it is not your preference does not mean it is not a hiddur,

in reply to: If your friend eats chalav stam, is it evil… #1372853

mentsch1: Chalav akum does not necessarily mean milk from a non-kosher animal. If one lives a rural farm town that has only kosher animals, the Pri Megadim holds that one can trust the Eino Yehudi that the milk is from a kosher animal and we are not concerned that maybe he went to another town and brought back milk from a non’kosher animal and mixed it in.

    1. Not wearing a kittel in shana rishono on Yom Kippur and Pesach.
    2. Round kreplach on erev Yom Kippur and triangular ones on Purim.
    3. Making Brocha on lulav and Esrog in the sukkah.
    4. Saying Nishmas on the day of your child’s chasunah
    5. Eating a hard boiled egg at the Pesach Seder
