Sam2: I understand that. but if we are on the receiving end I don’t think its our place to criticize (even rightfully) American support of other receivers. Even if we have a lot to say on the matter. which believe me, I do.

we don’t want people to turn around and do the same to us. we have been lucky so far B”H.

golfer:”…you’re sounding disturbingly similar to some of our friends at CNN, Sky News, BBC and al jazeera.”

that is one strong, hurtful statement. I’m just wondering how you can justify saying that to anyone who is in terrible anguish and pain over what is happening to their brothers and sisters in Israel. as someone wise once said in regards to writing ” best always to use it responsibly, carefully and truthfully”.

streekgeek: I’m with your friend. She has discovered the power of writing: sometimes things need to be over magnified and exaggerated to give over the targeted message.

SO for those out there who have read it and are focusing on the little details to knock, try to focus instead on the overall message. And im sure it will strike a chord of truth in your heart. Not everyone may be like that, but if you are honest you will acknowledge that there are a fair amount of people out there that are. So just try to make sure you are not one of them.

Rebdoniel: being a “productive member of society” means something different to everyone. if you understand it to mean going out to work as a dr, lawyer, accountant, businessman etc and getting a paycheck, thats jolly well good. but this world is a give and take world and not everyone can give in the same way and not everyone can take in the same way.

this may be how you are a productive member of society.

but you need to understand that other people see it to mean joining the army and fighting for their country and what they believe in.

and yet others understand it to mean sitting for hours learning Torah.

every person who believes being productive to mean one of the above understands what he is doing to be supportive to the world in some way. and you cannot deny that any one of the above three are not important to the sustainment of the world.

and if you do deny the third to be true, then I cannot help you my friend.

I am here to say that I too cannot play piano and talk at the same time. I cannot sing along with my playing either. but as LAB pointed out, its only when im playing both chords and lead. if I do talk or sing, I end up playing off beat and hitting the wrong keys. which is why I usually ignore people while playing.

with guitar, where its only chords, I can sing along and can probably even give a shiur while playing.

someone should do a research paper on this fascinating phenomenon.

after reading this thread I really feel tempted to donate spoons to every yeshiva. I don’t know what bites me more: getting coffee behind your ears or getting sweat and ear wax in your coffee. I think the latter.

i am a pretty good writer.love writing satire.

i am pretty musically talented. I play piano by ear and can really pull music apart, discover/put together harmonies and identify instruments.

i do all this for my own enjoyment. i am not a performer. and i use both talents to express myself.

i am also a good listener.

and i thank God everyday that He has given me all the above.

how about the song “Rock-a-by baby”? has a very cheery ending.

And back in the day when classic childrens stories were being written, it seems like there was a very strong anti-wolf feeling amongst the populace.

All I hear in that song is “I am worthless and who I am depends on what others think, say or make of me.”

everyone out there who identifies with that song: GIVE YOURSELF SOME CREDIT!!!!!

    you are in control!!!!

don’t let other people determine how your life will be and take responsibility because you are the only one who can!!!!

I know life can be tough and painful, and everyone feels like they need space, but the worst thing you can do to yourself is kid yourself into thinking that what you are and who you are is due to what somebody else has said or did.

Take the blame and take the credit in life. it’s only fair. your struggles and your triumphs belong to you alone because you are the only one who has the power to make decisions about who you are going to be.

so keep your chin up and be a man.

Thank you DaasYochid. clearly Ubiquitin does not get that distinction.

My point is that many Jews around the world as well as most non Jews believe that the celebration of Chanukah is all about the strength of the Maccabim….. The maccabim are a symbol to the world of great strength (this may have something to do with the name of the sports team in Israel). truth is, it wasn’t them, It was and is still, G-d Almighty. so its no wonder that Chanukah is widely celebrated even amongst the secular- who wouldn’t want to celebrate a holiday that supposedly gives yourself a huge pat on the back and shows that we are powerful and invincible? leaving G-d out of the picture really makes us look better, doesn’t it?

So, Just pointing out that this viewpoint is WRONG.

that is all I wanted to say. You don’t need to tell me to read the Rambam to see that the Maccabim won the war. I know they did. What I also know that it wasn’t because they were bodybuilders with great offensive tactics and unmatchable military skills.

I don’t think you asked rambam, but ok. as far as I know, we don’t celebrate the victory of the Maccabim on Chanukah, we celebrate “lehods u’lehallel leShimcha hagadol”: to show gratitude and praise the One who brought about the nissim of Chanukah.

    do you disagree?

I was being sarcastic. and if you start quoting meforshim at me I will get a blank look in my eyes because I am not a yeshiva bochur.

and if you think the Rambam wants you to celebrate the might of man vs. the Majesty of Hashem then go speak to a Rabbi.

What Jew in their right mind would buy a menorah they cud only use once??

(that comment was not directed towards the preschool teachers who send kids home with wooden menorahs that can rlly only be used once- since they burn down the first night.

    attn: wood+ fire= bad idea).

my cleaning lady story is BREAKING NEWS. it just happened half an hour ago.

apparently, the ladies wanted to clean my room. but there was one slight hitch in their plans: that I was sleeping in my bed. but that didn’t stop them. they threw the door open and switched on the light. and left me to deal with it. you gotta love them!!

im sure such computer-freezing tecniques would make me feel great affection towards the product and want to buy it instead of feeling a strong urge to kick down the entire supply when I walk past it in a grocery store. don’t you think so?

the driftwood is not coming any closer to the shore. its like a tease. you think its coming closer but then its suddenly far back and out of reach. you can calculate how many waves it rides, and how many waves it has yet to ride, but it will still remain out of reach when the tide comes in to drag it back out once more.
