Zahava, noone needs $2000 for rent all his friend needs is a few hundred dollars a month to rent a room. Yes it would be nice if we could all have our own place right away, but sometimes you need to start small. Of course finding a job would be very valuable.

Boro park JCC would probably be a good idea to start with

They should be helpful and can probably connect you to other organizations if necessary. There are many warm communities there and all types of Yidden and shuls.

CT-“We did the video thing for the first two children’s weddings. Waste of money, never look at them anymore.”
    -Thats what I was thinking

“Nowadays, everyone has a smartphone with video capability.”
-Which makes it even less necessary nowadays to do video. I mean before smartphones its one thing even though you never really watch it, but nowadays its almost completely unnecessary. On the other hand for some reason it still feels hard to give it up for people maybe they feel they might regret not having video?
In a way it also adds to the whole atmosphere of the simcha its sort of an illusion of a bigger production.

But anyways I would say to have video for the chuppah, and pre/post chuppah (and other highlights). Also you can turn it into a nice clip which sums up the wedding and professional cameras and cameraman still beat smartphones. But the dancing is usually pointless to watch so for that smartphones are good enough.

Why is recorded music bad idea? I get it that live band or singer makes an impression and enlivens it more, but then you are limited to one voice and certain songs. With recorded you can have a variety of popular songs and lively music with the actual voice of the original singer. Once the real dancing begins you probably want the best music you can get. I guess a one man band who can turn into a DJ after and switch tracks would work best. Does getting a famous singer work against you? Does the focus shift to them rather than the chosson and kallah?

People probably do watch the video but I’m sure the most interesting part is the chuppah. Dancing is nice, but when you are actually there. The videos almost never justify the real simcha as experienced in person. So I really wonder if it’s viewed more than once.

So you choose music. Makes sense I guess video is out if you don’t have music so really it would have been between enjoying the moment and having a great simcha with no pictures like the olden days, or have pictures of chuppah and everything which you can cherish forever. Interesting choice.
Btw these questions are not theoretical. Most people have all 3.

Ehh, once again you all fell for it. When a chabadster brings up a subject, it’s not to teach you it’s to put you down by proving how much chabad is “better” and more “correct” than everyone else. Don’t you get it by now? I don’t know why you are even attempting to answer these “points” they have explanations for everything and it always seems to be tailored perfectly to their side. It’s funny to see these reactions though as if you are still shocked by this behavior after all the other threads. A quick glance at their websites will help you understand their mindset and agenda.

Isnt it brought down in the Talmud about a third for expenses, third for investment, and third for savings?

Also the Rambam discussed those who will save on food just to have “another pruta in their pocket” and that its ridiculous to live like that. One doesnt know how long they will remain here and saving on things that one needs is foolish. But my question is regarding “extra” or “luxury” expenses. Say you are really feeling fleishigs from a restaurant but have a choice to just go home and make a sandwich. If you choose to “save” those 10-15 bucks and eat at home, is that really money that you saved or is it just going to leak out in another way? Im not talking about someone who eats out every day and indulges, just these isolated cases.
In a case where something will give you that extra energy that you might need,is the right choice to actually spend some money rather than trying to save it up and depriving yourself of that moment?

-yes but you can buy a used car and it might last a year without issues and then you have to invest money for it to run and if it totally breaks down you are also left with nothing.

In a way you can think of a lease as a very inexpensive long term rental. And you get to switch out cars every few years. Question is if its worth more to finance a new car. How long would it last in comparison to how many cars you could have leases in the same amount of years?

Yes but this is their website Im sure it can be tailored at will. The only thing in my opinion that should not be showing are titles of new topics which are pending. But the rest such as pending comments for articles or threads should appear as pending with screen name only so that we can actually know if our comment went through or if anyone else is commenting on the thread (as was the system before. Right now there is no way to know if the comment was even submitted. Even on pending topics if possible only show name of OP without title just to know if it went through. If thats not possible at least pending comments should be shown…>Thanks!

    “Be smarter and buy used.”
-Why is it smarter? You end up paying upfront, or in payments likely amounting to more than the lease, and all mechanical problems are your own responsibility. With a used car you are always taking somewhat of a risk unless you really know the owner or are referred by a friend. And dealers are your worst enemy.

iacisrmma- “Many people use smartphones and know exactly what the time the bus is arriving’
-keyword, “many”. And there are many who dont. And most stops dont have the electronic screenboard either.

” I know that when I buy my ticket I hold it in my hand or put it in my pocket until I reach my stop. ”
-Yes. Do you also know how many people are losing precious time off their transfer time period? Which is why there is a mass scramble at the machines when you actually see the bus at the stop in order to avoid losing time off the transfer. Unless they extended the time period which I dont know of.

“So was not using tokens and using metrocards.”

Iac-“Since this system was started in the Bronx in 2008, why are you first questioning it now.”

    – I thankfully don’t live in the Bronx. I think in my area it was only recently started. I’m questioning it now because I took a bus for the first time in like 4 years so I haven’t noticed these changes. I always assumed the card machines by the stops were MetroCard machines which would have been great. But they aren’t as I found out when trying to conveniently refill my card.
If you misplaced the ticket or didn’t take one but paid in coins, they can’t check your card and it’s unfair to be fined. These things d happen you know. People are busy and carry enough things with them that they don’t need to be worries about saving a ticket every time they use the bus. It also contributes to littering once the person doesn’t need the receipt. And lines at the machine especially if you are running to a bus which just pulled up to a stop and many people are trying to catch it. Busses would have to wait for them to board anyway which delays everything unless they just don’t care when they see someone paying and close the doors and drive off before the customer even has a chance to get on. I guess once you get used to it you work around it. Just a big change from the way it was for many years.

I’m sure my last comment sums up most of what the later commentors replied but did not answer the points. Also can they give you a fine if you didn’t have time to wait for the receipt because you ran on to the bus a second before it closed the doors? Or if you misplaced the ticket? Or you paid and didn’t know to take a ticket? What if you don’t give them your info, are they able to arrest you on the bus? There are many who don’t need to transfer busses. Just seems like a flawed system of they are relying on random checks. Of they had someone onboard at all times it would still be impossible to check everyone who’s getting on and off from all doors, but would be a better chance. I guess they are just relying on fear of paying. Many New Yorkers don’t have much a fear so they picked the wrong crowd. Anyone comparing this to parking tickets makes no sense because there are enough traffic Copa going around constantly to cover ground. Often they are even watching you. Besides parking is like a quarter-15 minutes or $1 an hour. Each MTA swipe is $2.75. It adds up.

You can give a countless number of excuses. Also I don’t think they can just stop dozens of people getting off a bus. Why would anyone stop and have their time wasted once they are off a bus? Besides unless they have inspectors on board to check every individual who boards the bus, many people can get away without paying.

Even if inspectors were on throughout the route things still get messy. The busses are very long and people board from all doors. There is no way to keep track of everyone especially with constant boarding and unboarding. And with random checks they are for sure missing people getting on for only a few stops. The whole system is flawed and a real money gap. Strange how they came up with this plan.

    Rebyid-“Printers also come locked.”

Printers requiring specific cartridges is really not the same as companies locking phones. Cartridges are a compatibility matter. Besides you can get generic ink so that alone invalidates that comparison.

A phone is compatible with mutliple carriers but is limited when locked which is an intentional thing that the company does. Not because it’s incompatible work orher companies.
Aside from not being able to use your phone with other carriers, you also won’t be able to use it overseas if it’s locked which is pretty sad seeing how you purchase a phone and can’t even use it if you travel, which is something it’s capable of doing except that the company blocked you from enjoying your product.

ubiquitin-“I lost you here. They do have an advantage. Isnt that the point of your thread?”

-yes an advantage only based on peoples lack of knowledge. But if they dont have a product that is actually better than the competition then they have nothing, its a false advantage. Again if and when people are sure that generics are the same or just as good, the brand names will crumble because there is nothing substantial in their product over the rest. As it is most people probably buy generic anyway. I stumbled on an article and it mentioned that many of those who buy brand name are just not knowledgeable about the difference. So if people were aware, it would be a whole different playing field.

“As mentioned if I want my wife to pick up acetaminophen I ask her “please pick up tylenol” she knows I mean generic.”

-Yes because she knows that you usually get the generic. Besides most people call it by the brand name which is much more popular than the actual drug/scientific name.

“Many refer to any cola drink as a “coke””
” refer to generic acetaminophen as “tylenol” much as many refer to any bandage as a “bandaid” ”

-yes and most people say “xerox something” when they arent using xerox, or “google it” regarding doing an internet search, “scotch tape” for any type of tape, “crazy glue” for super glue, “tums” for an antacid, and so on. That doesnt prove anything. People just call things in terms of the original product or most popular product, it doesnt mean they are actually referring to it rather they refer to its functionality. Popularity of name doesnt mean youll buy it if the generic or competition is just as good.

Also if you notice many knockoffs of name brands have almost identical color schemes and packaging. I wonder how they get away with that. Unless its perfectly legal to copy the competition in terms of packaging design, this might prove that many name brands also disguise themselves as generic to maximize revenue from all angles.

Again how can it be that those few people will have a problem with generics and not the name brand? Can name brands ensure that absolutely noone has an issue with their ingredients? Also are generics not allowed to use the same inactive ingredients because that would certainly solve a lot of issues. Why do generics substitute inactive ingredients?

“If you do have a problem, ask your doc and probably get the brand name.”
-Wouldnt you also have the option of trying a different generic brand before you jump to name brand? I mean they differ with what inactive ingredients they contain. Why is it always a guarantee that name brand will be the fix?

Joseph-“Broadband internet providers in most of the U.S. are duopolies, so there isn’t much competition.”
-Thats the problem, and internet is probably more expensive than when it first came out and with absolutely no reason aside for the fact that they can take advantage of the customers, being that they are the only provider offered. Everything else went down, tv,, phone, cell phone plans which you can get for $20 unlimited. Internet which is so popular and required nowadays just keeps going up. Totally unfair.

“It is only locked if you buy it on a payment plan. Once you finish paying off the phone they will unlock it upon request.”
    – Yes but as I’ve mentioned they also sell packaged “prepaid” phones that you can buy at the store and they will not unlock those for you unless you pay for service and for an extended amount of months. I mean your paying for the phone so why does it hurt them? If anything if its not the service you want then you wont buy the phone from them. But if it were able to be used on any service of choice, more people would buy their phones and the sales would go way up. So in a way, they are actually limiting themselves by locking these “prepaid” phones that they sell. Besides maybe that customer would choose their service anyways so by locking the phones they are just losing.

Takes2-“Try amazon or ebay. Ive personally had luck with amazon. Just make sure to vet the sellers before buying”
-ya i know that its possible to buy unlocked but the price gets jacked up and also almost all sellers are unreliable. They advertise new but they are in fact refurbished especially ebay. Maybe only if you buy directly from Amazon and not a seller you have a better chance. I dont know why companies just cannot let the consumer be happy with their purchase and use the product as they wish. Its like this forbidden feeling that the companies have regarding not locking your phone.

DovidBT- ya many times generics don’t have as good a taste as name brands. With toothpastes and mouthwash and the like some might opt out of generics that don’t match up to brand names.

Ubiquitin-“since the brand name has exclusve rights for the first 7 years”
-first 7 years of what, from when generics come out? I think generics can only come out 20 years after invention of the drug(google). Even if it’s 7 years that only the brand name can sell, so what? What do they do once generics come out if most/everyone only bought generics since it’s so much cheaper.
Again unless there are specific circumstances that brands are required, if people knew that generics are as safe/effective and the same as brand name, everyone would get generic as per price wise. In that case wouldn’t brands be forced to lower or match prices lest they go out of business?

Another point is aren’t original brands usually one step ahead of competition? I usually don’t drink coke but who here besides for me actually prefers the knockoff to the coca cola company? Probably not many. And many other such cases where we see that the original products which came out before everyone usually have the upper hand in what they offer. Verizon in phone service, apple/Samsung in phones, sharpies in permanent markers, etc. So how can it be that brand name drugs have pretty much no advantage over generics and don’t differ? Or do they?

Midwest-“Some people think that the big drug companies are using the threat from generics to keep their prices artifically high, costing us lots of $$$ extra. ”

-Im not sure what that means. What threat, that generics are bad?

Also unless someone specifically needs to avoid certain ingredients in a generic and needs a brand name, I can understand why someone might go for that. Not that a brand name is guaranteed to solve the problem, I mean unless brand name drugs are custom fit for everyones needs which I dont think they are, why buy it over the other which is much less expensive? Whos promising that brand names dont have any inactive ingredients that one needs to avoid over generics? And there are also usually more than one generic company or these types so they can just toggle through different generics.

It seems to me that many people might get a brand name thinking its safer or more effective than generic. Is there any truth to that? I mean unless its like a dollar difference then maybe you can get a brand name over generic, but even then, is there any advantage? Can inactive ingredients interfere and affect the active ingredient? Otherwise Im not sure why or how brand names would stay in business once the generic versions come out. I mean purchasing a box of 25 tylenol brand for like 4 or 5 bucks which might seem like a deal, when you can get a box of 50 for a dollar and some change, the former isnt that tempting after all.

CTlaywer-“The difference is in the binder ingredients, not the active ingredients of the specific medication.”

-That I know, but aside from the inactive ingredients being different, do they have any unwanted interaction with the active ingedients?

You mention generics having ingredient that have a negative impact on some users. Whos to say that the brand name are better though? Are brand names geared toward all people as opposed to generics? Do all generics substitute ingredients with ones that arent as good? If you look at coca- cola for instance which is unhealthy as it is, a generic brand making the same drink might be less harmful than the actual original one.

So the question is are brand name meds better than generics “in general” or is it that sometimes you just have to weed through certain brands (generic or non) in order to get the right one for you.

Winnie-the only scenario which a bochur will behave in that fashion you stated(rejecting freely since there are many options) is only due to the fact that at 21 they are probably not mature enough and don’t feel a need to settle right away. They will want to look at all options. The same goes for girls though. At young ages they feel they can get anyone they want and why settle for some shmoe who just has an average job. It’s rare to find young girls who are “attractive” getting married unless they have found someone perfect to their standards.

It’s a shame that people only mature and know what to look for when they get older and then options are more limited. But that’s how it works. I’d say by age 26 and up is when girls start to be more open minded regarding a potential guy. Even then…

Look, I don’t think there is any shidduch crisis going on. Most girls that are attractive appearance wise, will find someone they are interested in and get married. Personality aside. If they have a good personality it’s even easier. Let’s be honest, how many young girls who “look” good, have some big shot job, confident, independent, or all of the above, do you see single and waiting “for a phone call”?

The metzius is that the only reason some of these girls stay single for a while is exactly due to the fact that they hold those attributes and positions and think too highly if themselves. But then again, most of these attractive “successful” girls will find a guy who makes a lot of money and get married. If anything, that’s the reason for the shidduch crisis. Many girls will pass over good guys because they want and know that they can score bigger money and live like the princess that they always wanted or are accustomed to from home.

I don’t know many guys who are refusing good girls. For girls it’s either they demand a yeshiva bochur (talmid chochom)or monetary success or in many circumstances, both. Usually they will settle on one or the other though.

So once again, NO shidduch crisis. It is self inflicted due to today’s societal demands and pressure. Girls are more independent and encouraged to stay that way, and if they have some “great” job or “career”, they will stay single until the day they find the perfect prince to their liking (if ever). Because why should they not find someone who also makes as much if not more? After all, marriage is a whole big competition isn’t it? Growing and building a family together is for the old generations.

Then they wake up from their fantasy and oops they are over 30 and even settling for someone now is a little too late.
Honestly, I would say the biggest obstacle right now is high demands jobwise. Obviously I am not advocating for those guys who choose to be bums and don’t understand why they can’t get a girl to marry them. That’s their own choice. But if a guy does work, has a steady income, proves that he is willing to keep working and not just rely on who knows what for income, then why should that be such an issue?
It’s very simple, bochur and girl meet-interested in each other-guy works-girl works(even better in today’s high priced world)- they get married and grow together. Simple.

Besides you might not have to worry, Eurovision is considering hosting elsewhere due to politics of where in Israel it will be hosted and also due to countries boycotting so they might host in a different country altogether.
