Mik5, the 1-st paragragh, you got it wrong.

I’ll say!! That Chazal says the poor and insignificant good people in this world were on top there and the rich, powerful and influential were on the bottom!! But acc. to a big Rav the Ehrlicher yidden (ie full time learners and talmidei chachamim) are judged by a different standard altogether and were not observed.

Health: There are many nafka minas in whether a person’s halachic status is tinok shenishba, mumar l’teavon, mumar l’chachis, mechalel shabbos befarhesia, bephnay asara. But besides all the technical aspects speaking and relating to the different types in particular about Jewish subjects is very different and requires different levels of care and focus. Da ma she tashiv. There is a sefer by Rabbi M. Becher and R. M. Newman called Avasos Ahava that deals with much of this as it applies to kiruv. I recommend it.

Avraham was definitely a rebel against the status quo of idolatry, but by the time of Yaakov and the shevatim a new Jewish status quo could be said to have established and it became very important to conform to it, the pattern could be seen to be repeated many times and it takes great judgement to know when to apply this or that quality, iconoclast or staunch defender of the faith and morality.

BTguy: There is a book which refutes the idea that the hippie 60’s was really responsible for a number of the positives that you mention, Closing of the American Mind by A. Bloom. But the possibility of widening ones horizons and ideas is certainly a good thing ESPECIALLY for the majority of non frum Jews to consider the error of their ways.

I heard that Devorah haneviah was in the similar situation and she made wicks for the menorah and sent her spouse to deliver them over and over until the hashpaw of being in the environ of the House of Hashem brought out the Tzidkus of her spouse. You have the power to define your marriage in a positive way. If you had the talent to build a good career why don’t you use some of it to reverse your apparent trend? Good Luck, and may Hashem help you build a bayis neeman b’yisrael b’toch shaar mishpachas Yisrael.

Rav Shimshon Pincus brings a comparison; a poor man asks a rich man for a gift and he says no, he asks again and he says no, the rich man has shown that he does not want to give the gift, asking a third and fourth time will not only not help it might make it worse, but by Hashem it is completely different he wants the best for us always, only there is some reason He does not grant it yet, asking again and again is actually very pleasing to Him, and shows the individual knows the “right address” to find the answer.

Another idea I suggest is go to a Fruit/Veg. Store and buy low grade stuff, Romaine, scallions, etc. Perhaps the place you work is using a high grade that is coming in quite clean to begin with. Hatzlacha in your avodas hakodesh.

There are instructional material online OU ChofK and Star-K sites and Chof K put out a color pamphlet with pics of thrips, leafminers, and aphids or just google those three to see pics online. Also Rav Vaye’s sefer has many photos and a guide to each type of fruit and veggie, very helpful.

When it comes to the Klal there are most definitely absolutes and I believe the one at play here should be b’yamin karov, b’smol rachok. Draw close with the (stronger hand)right and with the (weaker)left rebuke. Having said that I have to agree that the OTD reaction is not just due to abuse or difficulties but do you really think the solution is harsh mussar? The generations get weaker and less able to handle it, ask any menahel.

dont overly judge on superficial status or whatever people judge on.

Rabbi D. Weinberger mentioned in a shiur on the topic the most important qualities to look for: good middos, easygoing, good heart, love of Torah, satisfied with little(gashmius), diligence, straight thinker, looking to grow.

I was told to treat a non-halachic convert who showed up at a kiruv event just like anyone else and that the halachic reasoning is that they have already proven a certain level of sincerity in being willing to have themselves declared Jewish to the best of their knowledge at the time.

There is also an opportunity in “unintentional celebrity” to influence others for good and continue a Kiddush Hashem in many cases. For instance, I read the autobiography story of Mendel Bilus, written years after his trial and it was fascinating and inspiring. But I agree the individuals deserve privacy and our media should behave very differently than secular one.

BTGuy: Feel for you, dating is an emotional roller coaster and you have to ride it out and hold on. IMO Hashem definitely does this for our good as the roller coaster of life after marriage is a lot steeper and deeper in every way. Think about it, parnassah, children, health, shalom bayis. Try to take the big overview and get past the pain and on to your bashert b’karov, a shidduch nachon l’shem ultiferes bitoch shaar penuyay Yisrael.

    mommamia22 u r welcome.

cherrybim Actually, the thickness of the rolled up tarp is already more than a tefach

I believe the poskim bring a gemara against this since a roll is evidence that it is not an existing tent and are machmir but a partially unrolled is ok, if I have a chance to post the source later I will, if not u may want to check in MB chelek 3 simanim on ohel and binyan.

mommamia22 Isn’t there an issue with opening a “tent” on shabbos (umbrella, etc.)? How are we allowed to open a tarp? Is this issur during shabbos only, or also during Yom Tov? Sorry, I can’t remember from last year.

Attention those who have a shlock; in order to open and close it on YT/Shabbos you need to unroll it a tefach erev YT to avoid the issur of ohel/making a tent, rather than just extending an already existing one. This is also neccessary if you roll it back on YT/Shabbos, always let it remain open a tefach. Chag Kasher v’sameach!!

Bezalel: The geder is not giving hashgocha to restaurants open Shabbos and Yom Tov, and I am talking from experience that it is an issue Rabbonim are concerned about and most are currently holding strong on. As I said above even many non-Jewish owned kosher restaurants are closed on Shabbos.

Chacham vote with your feet by not eating at those places and also letting them know and the hechsher as well, it will sometimes get results, most kosher restaurant owners want to please their customers and their Rabbis, and there is a lot of competition so they do need to be reminded of the borders of what the community needs. Some hechshers may not comment on non kashrus issues but others will.

Achilas keva is assur outside a sukkah and presumably the yom tov pleasure trip is to enhance the chag which should include achilas keva so therefore you need a sukkah.

The problem is a legitimate one of poretz geder, as the frum community in NY/NJ has successfully upgraded it’s kashrus standards in recent times so that kosher restaurants that are non-shomer shabbos are the rare exception even those owned by goyim! (I can point out many examples of the latter particularly in Manhattan.) This is to my mind a wonderful development as it highlights the holistic nature of yiddishkeit rather than the pick a mitzvah approach after all what is kashrus without Shabbos and Yom Tov and 613 Torah Avenue?

Reasons to say korbonos; a- instituted by Chazal ,

b- if one did not learn anything for the rest of the day it covers minimum chiyuv of chumash, mishna, gem.,

c – al pi Zohar it is the 1st of the 4 parts of shacharis that are kneged the guf, nefesh, ruach and neshama. (try getting thru the day with just a nefesh, ruach and neshama) on the other hand maybe not a bad idea that last one.

Slow down a moment and consider some facts before you go off on a rant– An average family man making say $1000-1500 per week and loses his job, top unemployment in NY is 400 per week, do you really think he has no incentive to find work? He is required to look and prove it also to continue collecting. This is also subsidized by his previous employer btw it is called Unemployment Insurance benefits for a reason it is not a pure gov’t handout though the Dept. of Labor administers it.

Look my mind is still open to Mr. Cain, but I want this country to remain a malchus shel chesed and unemployment benefits are to my mind a good thing in many ways, and not every person who loses his job is to blame for it. I do not think that realization is too high for a goy, not at all.

I often wonder… Why not ask the Administrator what is the break even point and what is the average family paying? Then you will know where you fall. A major large Yeshiva in Brooklyn published that info several years ago in the hope it would help with donations, I heard it didn’t.

I heard Rabbi Pesach Krohn say a Chazal that a man being m’farnais his family is like he is going through tzar laida 24/6. Does anyone know the source because it has been giving me chizuk since I heard this 2 or so years ago (although my wife has not been so misratzeh with it) on the other hand she doesn’t work, at the moment she’s looking (it’s been a long moment btw so far about 18 years), but if true then soliek’s opening comparison of the two klalos is more than valid because in one way the man’s is much more intense!!

It wasn’t easy but we already sent two girls for the year in Sem. at just a little more than we paid for 12th grade so it is worth the hassles with applications and qualifications. BY private scholarships also exist if you seek them out (and swallow pride btw)

I don’t mean to belittle you or your daughter’s homesickness at all but if you are paying 21k it means you don’t qualify for TAP, Pell, Massa, BY scholarship money, all of which basically brings down the price by half, which means you can probably afford to pop over and visit Chanukah time, bring her back for Pesach, which means she should really get over it how long is it going to be before she sees Mommy and Tatty, already? Again please be mochail but we all need to understand the culture we are raising our kids in and what the mussar avicha v’toras imecha calls upon us to do. And maybe considering the Sems mentioned above is called for on your part and not calling for inventing a so called top-line new sem.

We had one who (we later realized) made a long distance call the minute we left and stayed on the line until we returned. At the end of the month we got the bill and that was goodbye, though today if one had an unimited call deal I guess that could be worked out.

I strongly suggest all investors to check your investments daily and be ready to get out quickly in the event of a sudden loss exceeding your tolerance level. Many, many in the last few years turned away briefly and when they turned back they found to their horror 30, 50, 80 % losses. Learn from this mistake and don’t invest if you will not stay engaged and ready to pull out.

We had success with Dr. Sagie’s method. He comes here once or twice a year and has an initial session then conducts the therapy by phone. There is a significant requirement for parents to be involved nightly, at least at the beginning. To us it worked, and there was no strangeness about it, just quite chachmadik in my opinion. He believes the problem is not emotional or mental at all in most cases but has to do with a tendency to deep sleep and is probably genetic. Google him. Good Luck and refuah shleima and mazel tov!!
