February 29, 2016 2:14 pm at 2:14 pm in reply to: If there is 1 thing i should bring to seminary, what should it be? #1149537JosephParticipant
A Tehilim. Everything else is commentary.
JosephParticipantHow do Israelis manage to get through a day without American deoderant without smelling?
JosephParticipantSam, if he followed Shulchan Aruch k’peshuto after you declined mechila, how can you have an additional taaina on him for doing the only thing pashut halacha states he should?
JosephParticipantMinute Maid is also pretty good.
JosephParticipantOn what basis do you so say vis-a-vis what my rebbeim would say?
Insofar regarding intent, you aren’t correct.
The quoted text is from newbee.
JosephParticipantRight, an anonymous claim on an anonymous forum that an anonymous rosh yeshiva claimed that we shouldn’t talk about a Chazal or Mishna and that a halacha in Shulchan Aruch “is not followed today” cannot be challenged despite being unable to cite a single sh”ut psak that the S”A is wrong.
JosephParticipantWhich rosh yeshiva? No serious rosh yeshiva ever said we stop following a halacha in Shulchan Aruch in our days or that we shouldn’t talk about a mishna.
JosephParticipantAnecdotally, a lot more older singles have pets than the average frum families. Hence we see pets are bad for shidduch opportunities.
JosephParticipantThat was a serious comment.
JosephParticipantIt seems this compromise where it is indirectly referenced was acceptable to everyone. It was a matter of finding the right formula on how to discuss it. It appears to be a reasonable solution and it was a matter of finding an acceptable presentation for the discussion. Nevertheless, I honestly don’t understand what is objectionable to directly quoting the Halacha, as I asked above if it would have been objectionable to quoting it if the Halacha was the reverse.
You asked that instead of answering the question of why you are so stuck (need I say obsessed) with this type of topic. You say interest in discussion although if you read the thread you don’t really discuss it, you try baiting a couple posters and then talk to me about the concept of posting such threads. Looks to me like Josh31 tried discussing and you weren’t interested. C’mon Joe, own up
JosephParticipantTwenty Nine, of the other posts, none recent nor close in time to each other, none were approved to my recollection. The intent was never anything other than an honest halachic discussion – and as I asked in the post I linked to above, I honestly would like to know what is objectionable. I was wondering if mentioning the halachic order regarding triage in life saving was objectionable because in doesn’t fit into contemporary society’s egalitarianism, thus stating the Halacha will offend the modern crowd, and if it would have been more acceptable and non-objectionable to mention the halacha if the halacha had been the reverse, since the reverse would in fact have fit into modern society’s chivalrous expectations?
And I still comment that you seem to have a need to discuss this particular subject, so much so that it keeps getting reposted even though, as you admit, it gets deleted.
JosephParticipantThe best yeshivas for MO boys are Chareidi yeshivas so they can get a real feel and bren for yiddishkeit.
JosephParticipantAgain?
JosephParticipantCTL: You seen to favor marrying your children within the same socio-economic class as yourself.
JosephParticipantWhat makes the Pringles halachicly different than potato chips as far as a bracha?
February 28, 2016 1:49 pm at 1:49 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139699JosephParticipantAvi, even if the women married Christian men, their children, and their daughters children etc., would be Jewish indefinitely.
JosephParticipantHow are Pringles different than other potato chips?
February 28, 2016 12:54 pm at 12:54 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139697JosephParticipantyehuda, what happened to the descendent’s of the tens of thousands of female marranos and Christian convertees from the Sephardic population during the Spanish Inquisition?
JosephParticipantAin’t that the most expensive brand?
JosephParticipantWell, I stated the Halacha in the pre-edited OP, but a mod in his wisdom felt it should remain unstated. Whilst I disagree, they are da bosses here so I won’t repost it. You can read my discussion with the mod in the below link, or this threads url, if you want to venture a guess:
I also cited the precise location in S”A, so you can consult your local talmid chochom that you’ve previously referenced.
JosephParticipantBump
JosephParticipantDab your fingers in it and touch your face and inside your pockets.
February 28, 2016 1:01 am at 1:01 am in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139693JosephParticipantSo if it turns out that Pope Francis is maternally of Jewish lineage, bas achar bas, his greatX7 grandmother having been a meshumed, will Francis be taken by Moshiach to Eretz Yisroel during the Geula?
JosephParticipantQueen: Assuming you knew the Halacha in advance, and it was that someone else should be given priority in being rescued, would you hope that Halacha was adhered to?
JosephParticipantnewbee: What’s your source that you save a parent’s life before your own? That doesn’t seem correct.
JosephParticipantQueen: And if Halacha says otherwise, would you still hope that if it is in contravention to Halacha?
February 26, 2016 9:35 pm at 9:35 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139686JosephParticipantubiq, 50% of Jewish Spain baptized.
JosephParticipantSam, ubiq, the floor is yours.
February 26, 2016 7:51 pm at 7:51 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139683JosephParticipantThank you most friendly Mod!
February 26, 2016 7:48 pm at 7:48 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139682JosephParticipantSam: It is still a valid halachic discussion as it is cited in S”A as halacha l’maaisa (S”A isn’t theory) and the Mishna.
February 26, 2016 7:46 pm at 7:46 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139681JosephParticipantMods (any one of yous), can you perhaps slightly edit my new thread and approve it to make it less objectionable as ubiq and Sam appear interested in it as a halachic discussion?
Much TIA
February 26, 2016 7:01 pm at 7:01 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139675JosephParticipantMy question was really addressed to whoever pulled the trigger. I honestly did not even consider who it is as it is usually impossible to know who did what behind the curtains.
But if you want to reverse, undelete and post it, I’d certainly be cheering you on. 😉
Otherwise whoever made the call I’d be interested in addressing it.
P.S. Why do you think I dislike you? I don’t. Nor do I hold you in blame.
February 26, 2016 6:28 pm at 6:28 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139673JosephParticipantSince this has become the Ask the Mods thread, I was wondering if my oh so objectionable thread mentioning (gasp!) the halacha regarding triage in life saving (hameivin yovin) was objectionable because in doesn’t fit into contemporary society’s egalitarianism, and if it would have been more acceptable and non-objectionable to mention the halacha if the halacha had been the reverse, since the reverse would in fact have fit into modern society’s chivalrous expectations?
February 26, 2016 1:15 pm at 1:15 pm in reply to: Parenting advice for your fellow Jewish father #1138840JosephParticipantWhat’s better for your child – to be put through a Chinese torture chamber or to be waterboarded?
JosephParticipantYou’re welcome.
February 26, 2016 11:33 am at 11:33 am in reply to: Parenting advice for your fellow Jewish father #1138835JosephParticipantNeither.
JosephParticipantaquestioningjew: I think we’re debating semantics here more than the pertinent details. The reason the halacha is that women shouldn’t leave the home too much is so that they do not attract too much attention on the street. So when a woman does leave the home she should act in a manner to reduce being subject to attention. Conducting a loud phone conversation can subject a person to undue attention.
February 25, 2016 4:49 pm at 4:49 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139625JosephParticipantAvram: Sure. Incest is one example. Also, a purported non-Jew may have sinned with an eishes ish who did have an earlier halachic marriage that never terminated and generations later none of the decedents were aware of their Jewish lineage.
JosephParticipantaquestioningjew: Shulchan Aruch and Rambam pasken l’halacha that women shouldn’t go out of home into the street too much. Why do you think this halacha exists?
February 25, 2016 1:08 pm at 1:08 pm in reply to: Should Yeshiva's (all of them) say Mishberach for Israel soldiers on Shabbos? #1139767JosephParticipantSimcha, why would you have less hakaras hatov, or make any less a mi sheberach, for someone who constantly risks his life for others running into a “non-living” mortal dangerous fire consuming everything it encounters than someone risking his life versus a “living” being posing a mortal danger to others?
Just as they made up a newfangled blessing for the soldiers they should similarly start a tradition to make a weekly mi sheberach for firefighters.
The lack thereof is quite telling of their motivations. The mi sheberach was designed as a politically motivated demonstration of support for Zionism that goes against mesorah and tradition regarding instituting new “traditions”.
February 25, 2016 2:30 am at 2:30 am in reply to: Should Yeshiva's (all of them) say Mishberach for Israel soldiers on Shabbos? #1139752JosephParticipantWhere’s the mi sheberach for firefighters to show our hakaros hatov to them for putting their lives on the line, or in the line of fire as apy aptly put it, everyday for all of us – with many having lost their lives saving others?
February 25, 2016 12:06 am at 12:06 am in reply to: Should Yeshiva's (all of them) say Mishberach for Israel soldiers on Shabbos? #1139745JosephParticipantFirefighters DIE too.
February 24, 2016 11:30 pm at 11:30 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139588JosephParticipantOkay fellows, you can ease up. Comrade Sanders isn’t going to be the nominee, let alone the President. The guy never stood a chance.
February 24, 2016 10:34 pm at 10:34 pm in reply to: Should Yeshiva's (all of them) say Mishberach for Israel soldiers on Shabbos? #1139742JosephParticipantRon, I would hope that those who do not say the mi sheberach for the Bnei Yeshiva for whatever reason at least appreciate somewhat what it is to like to choose to live in difficult finances while protecting Klal Yisroel from harm. Sadly this does not seem to be the case.
February 24, 2016 7:07 pm at 7:07 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139569JosephParticipantSam, I was also preplexed about the India and Africa comment. But much of Spain very well may be, as half the Jewish population converted at the Inquisition (the other half fled. And recent DNA studies in Spain indicate much of the population have Jewish blood.
February 24, 2016 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm in reply to: Should Yeshiva's (all of them) say Mishberach for Israel soldiers on Shabbos? #1139735JosephParticipantIf they say it for Obama then for sure they’ll say it for Trump.
February 24, 2016 6:53 pm at 6:53 pm in reply to: Should Yeshiva's (all of them) say Mishberach for Israel soldiers on Shabbos? #1139733JosephParticipantBMHEE: Construction workers, lumberjacks, roofers, firefighters and correction officers are examples of dangerous jobs too. If the criteria is dangerous jobs, make mishberachs for them too. If the criteria is saving the most lives, make mishberachs for the Bnei Yeshiva first.
February 24, 2016 5:34 pm at 5:34 pm in reply to: Should Yeshiva's (all of them) say Mishberach for Israel soldiers on Shabbos? #1139724JosephParticipantOr, better yet, modify DY’s comment from Hatzalah to the Bnei HaTorah who learn Torah yomom v’layla thus protecting the world more than everyone else combined.
JosephParticipantMixing blue and yellow produces white.
You people should take lessons on color mixes!
JosephParticipantRY, another reason why we Yidden shouldn’t follow today’s goyish society.
