the boards excsue is they want the state to bail them out, I think they are the only district in the state asking for this for the reasons they specify. You cant expect the general population of the state to bail you out without conditions if at all

The State “bails out” all districts when it gives all districts funding based on how many students are in public school. The ER district is unique from other districts in that a majority of students go to private not public schools and are therefore not getting counted towards the number of students the State gives educational aid to.

If the State doesn’t give the district additional aid despite the rising number of children being born and going to school in ER, then what will happen (and is already happening) is the board will be forced to cut back public school education spending to the bare bones basics, eliminating things like art and other courses and extracurricular activities that New York State law does not make mandatory.

So the choice for the State is either 1) give more funding to the district considering ALL the children going to school, not just counting public students or 2) face a bare bones public school that will legally be defunded of all activities that are not legally mandated.

Baloney. You want to support infanticide and are looking for lame excuses to justify the unjustifiable. And a poor excuse at that.

Btw, I mentioned assault. It can clearly be written broad enough to cover all basis.

ubiquitin: So what the Catholic Church took that position. Most American Catholics don’t support having no exceptions nor do most Americans. The vast vast majority of Americans support exceptions. If and when a law is enacted outlawing abortions it will surely have exceptions.

You can support a law outlawing abortion that has exception for the mother’s life and health, when in danger, and when assaulted. The law can be broadly written to cover virtually any halachic exceptions. There’s no excuse to support a regime permitting abortion-on-demand.

No one is promoting permitting theft among non-Jews. Both theft and abortion, both being prohibited, should be opposed.

Your “He got me scared, though…” was a bit ambiguous. It wasn’t entirely clear whether he got you scared that he said “I’m saying yes” to your face rather than the shadchan (and you thought that inappropriate) or if he got you scared that he was finished with you.

Anyways, why did you give him a long look? You really entertained the idea he might have been dumping you right to your face?

    R. Norman Lamm (Homosexuality):

It may be, however, that the very variety of interpretations of to’evah points to a far more fundamental meaning, namely, that it is an act characterized as an “abomination” is prima facie disgusting and cannot be further defined or explained. Certain acts are considered to’evah by the Torah, and there the matters rests. It is, as it were, a visceral reaction, an intuitive disqualification of the act, and we run the risk of distorting the Biblical judgment if we rationalize it. To’evh constitutes a category of objectionableness sui generis: it is a primary phenomenon. (This lends additional force to Rabbi David Z. Hoffmann’s contention that to’evah is used by the Torah to indicate the repulsiveness of a proscribed act, no matter how much it may be in vogue among advance and sophisticated cultures: see his Sefer Va-yikra, II, p. 54).

But as Rabbi Adlerstein said, the site operator who wrote most of the postings (who, by the way, is a Rov in his own right) saved countless lives of teenagers who were on the verge of falling off the derech (and worse). And even Rabbi Adlerstein, who is certainly far from being a right-winger, wrote in OU’s flagship publication what a wonderful and necessary site it is. (Despite Rabbi Adlerstein pointing out that he vociferously disagrees with the site’s Rov’s positions on Zionism and MO, stuff R. Adlerstein himself is a supporter of.)

Under the law at the time they came, the vast majority of Jews entered the United States legally.

There is no excuse for the millions who broke the law and entered the United States illegally. Otherwise why have immigration laws? Simply have open borders. Why should anyone wait their turn and immigrate legally, when they can cut the line years ahead and enter illegally and then be given amnesty.

So what we have is Rabbi Adlerstein wrote an article in JA that is completely positive about frumteens without a negative mention. He took a lot of heat from the left-wing who castigated him after OU published it. (They actually demanded he pull it from the magazine; but it had gone to print already.) So he came out with the above clarification that he doesn’t like frumteens’ positions on Zionism and Modern Orthodoxy. In the MO community you can say a lot of things, but once you say something against the holy State/Zionism or modern orthodoxy, you’ve “crossed the line”.

What happens if the U.S.A. drops out of the iran deal-as we all hope will happen with Hashems help? the other 5 countries will still be supporting it.

Indeed. At this point the sanctions are gone even if Congress rejects the deal. A Congressional rejection will mean there’s no deal with the U.S. AND there’s no more international sanctions on Iran. The United Nations Security Council already voted to end international sanctions. Russia (and China) will veto any attempts to reimpose international sanctions. The U.S. rejecting the deal will not stop international sanctions from ending and soon Iran will be trading with Europe, Asia and Russia the goods that were previously sanctioned, irregardless of what Congress or the U.S. does.

And I’m exactly saying that the law should be codified that the government and the board of ed cannot interfere with private school decisions or budgets, even though its funded by taxpayers.

    1. All taxpayers are entitled to tax funded schooling.

    2. All taxpayers are entitled to choose any school of their choice, public or private.

    3. Ideally, the government should get out of the schooling business altogether. (They’ve failed.)

    4. The government cannot interfere with parents schooling choices or methodologies.

Government money belongs to taxpayers, not to “the government”. Citizen taxpayers should have the right to choose how their educational dollars are spent on their children.

Uncle Sam doesn’t tell you how to spend your IRS refund check or your Child Tax Credit. Even welfare (cash) recipients can legally spend their welfare cash on whatever they want. What I am proposing easily fits within the Constitution.

Government money is the taxpayer’s money. The taxpayer gave the government that money, and the taxpayer ought to have the right to choose how to educate their children, with the tax dollars they put into the system, without socialized government bureaucrats dictating to them how to educate their children. Parents are far better equipped to choose their children’s education that nameless government bureaucrats in State capitols. Especially considering that government public schools have failed America’s children for the past half century.

As far as Ireland, the US government cannot dictate to a private school what religion they may or may not teach. No one is asking to fund religious education. But secular education should be funded in any private schools.

lc: Taxpayers have a right to sit on a public board of ed that pays for educational services for taxpayers children. The public board of ed controls spending for services for both public and private schools. The taxpayers right to sit on the board is because it is a public government body. If the board of ed only determines public school funding and stops determining private school services with the latter determined by another entity, and private schools were government funded, then it would be more logical to limit participation on the board of ed to public school parents.

Taxpayers do not have a right, nor should they have a right, to determine how private schools spend money to educate children, even if partially tax funded. The school is a private entity not a government body. Only the parents and private school should determine their educational curriculum, and how they choose to spend their educational dollars, as government bureaucrats shouldn’t be replacing parents in determining how to educate the children.

And tax dollars should pay for children’s education regardless of where they go to school, public or private, because parents pay school education taxes and parents should decide where to send their children without government interference into how they choose to educate their children.

In fact, there is good reason to disband public schools and privatize them, considering the government’s proven failure in educating children in public schools. The government does not belong in the school business.

By enacting a law funding private schools to run their educational system how they choose, without socialized government bureaucrats determining what is best from an educational standpoint. We’ve seen how government-run education has failed public school students for over half a century.

The logic is simple, taxpayers should choose how to educate their children without government interference. And taxpayers should choose where to educate their children, and receive the same educational funding that they paid taxes for regardless of where they send their children to school.

writer, you missed the point. It doesn’t necessarily have to be equal. A greater quantity of Torah is always better than a lesser quantity of Torah.

The frum community are part of those who pay (i.e. taxpayers) the fiddler. Church/State is not a barrier to funding private schools; other States do it and have won Church/State lawsuits upholding the government’s ability to fund such institutions.

that is one of Ezra Friedlander’s big, BIG inconsistencies. On the one hand, he doesn’t want an audit or review in any way of the yeshivas out of fear that they will be dictated to by the government- on the other hand, he wants some kind of free, no-strings-attached handout gift-wrapped and handed over from that same government. That’s simply not how life works and, to be honest, it’s better that way.

There is no need for government socialized education. Let government get out of the education business and allow the private sector to operate schools. Government has proven itself a failure in education. Public school students are far behind not only private school students but far behind international educational benchmarks.

And we have every right to expect government funding of our children so long as we are subjected to taxation that finances schooling.

    1) All things equal, the more quantity given to Torah studies, the greater the possible quality of Torah studies.

    2) Even putting aside the debate on quality, a higher quantity of Limud Torah is in its own right a major plus. There is no minimum threshold for the amount of Torah you are obligated to know. The rule is: more is better; less is worse. And the difference between just a little more and a little less is staggering. As the Vilna Gaon points out, one word of Torah knowledge gives you more holiness than an entire lifetime’s worth of doing other Mitzvos.

And here we thought that a secular education is expensive! Its much more expensive than you think – you can acquire it only at the expense of your time and effort that you could have been putting toward becoming educated in Olam Habah.

Rav Yitzchok Silberstein, Chashukei Chemed Yoma 2a:

Question: It says in Yevamos 62b) that one who loves his lives as himself and honors her more than himself….will have peace in his tent. The Rambam (Hilchos Ishus 15:19) writes that the Sages commanded that a man should honor his wife more than himself and love her as much as himself. But this requires an explanation as to why they gave such a command since we already are commanded to love our fellow man and a person’s wife is obviously included in this Torah command?

Answer: I asked this question to my brother -in-law Rav Chaim Konievsky and he replied that it was because there are times when a person is not obligated to show love from the Torah command of “love your fellow as yourself.” For example it says in Nida (16b), Rav Shimon bar Yochai said there are 4 things that Gd hates and I don’t like. 1) A person who suddenly enters into his house and surely into the house of another person [because person they are involved in intimate matters – Rashi]. The Maharasha writes, “G-d hates them because these are matters of pritzus (immorality) but regarding himself Rav Shimon just says I don’t love them. That is because it is possible that these things are not pritzus that would justify violating the prohibition of hating another.” Consequently in such a case if the wife suddenly enters into the house then at that moment there is no obligation to love his wife from the aspect of the Torah law of “love your fellow as yourself.” However in regard to the command that is derived from “you will have peace in your tent”- there is still an obligation to love her. Furthermore there is a question regarding what the halachais when a wife sins. There is no longer an obligation to love her from “love your fellow” – in fact the opposite is true and there is an obligation to hate her. Is this rabbinic command “of peace in your tent” still applicable? It would seem that even if there is no mitzva to love her there is still a mitzva to honor her. That is because the obligation to honor her is because of gratitude because she raises the children and saves him from sin. This gratitude is still obligatory even if she sins. Therefore it is correct to honor her and to buy her appropriate clothing – even though she sins. Rav Shmuel Arvah gives an additional answer why there is a special verse to love his wife. It is based on the Maharsha (Shabbos 31a) which explains the answer of Hillel to the goy who wanted to learn the entire Torah while standing on one foot and Hillel replied that what is hateful to you do do to your fellow. The question is why he worded in a negative way that he should be good to his fellow as he is to himself? He answers that the Maharsha says that the verse of “loving your fellow as yourself” only applies to negative commands such as not taking revenge. However not to the positive commands of the Torah to do good to others. That is because your life always comes first. Consequently we can say from the obligation of loving your fellow as yourself – there is no obligation to be good to your wife as to yourself. However from the obligation to honor your wife – there is an obligation to honor [sic] her as yourself.
