NYC has different laws than the rest of NYS regarding property/school taxation. Very different. My comment pertained to NYS law outside NYC, and it is correctly stated.
JosephParticipantIt’s clear from Chazal that the existence of mamzerim is itself harmful to klal yisroel. There are even dei’os that you do not say the mi sheberach at the bris of a mamzer “likayem es hayeled hazeh” since we don’t want him to survive, we don’t want the perpetuation of mamzerus amongst klal yisroel. The Gemara in Yevamos even says that Hashem will see to it that unknown mamzerim die out so they will not propegate mamzerus amongst us unknowingly.
JosephParticipantyytz: Shulchan Aruch YD 265:4 – “We publicize at the time of the Bris Milah that the baby is a mamzer.” The Shach there says that mamzerim are not given a Bris Mila inside the shul like kosher children are, but outside the shul. The Gra quotes the source for publicizing that the baby is a mamzer by the Bris is a Gemora in Yevomes 78b. The Gemorah there says that a Rov publicized the fact that a somebody was a mamzer. The person came to the Rov to complain and the Rov said that if I had not publicized this, you would have died.
Rema YD 265:4 – “???????? ???? ????? ???? ????”
JosephParticipantWhat if the 25 year old wants Tatti to vet all shiddduch candidates.
JosephParticipantyytz: The citation you made does not state or imply what you attribute to it.
December 23, 2015 2:13 am at 2:13 am in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157061JosephParticipantThe NYS legislature almost passed special legislation last year granting millions of dollars to the East Ramapo School District. It was torpedoed by public school advocates who said better no money if there is no monitor with veto power.
December 23, 2015 2:09 am at 2:09 am in reply to: Are the girls causing their own shidduch crisis?? #1120588JosephParticipantIf girls would get married very shortly after completing 12th grade in beis yaakov, most of the shiddduch crisis would be resolved.
December 22, 2015 10:24 pm at 10:24 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157054JosephParticipantIn both NY & NJ no one can impose a local property/school tax increase without the voters approving it in a referendum. That’s the law in both States.
December 22, 2015 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157051JosephParticipantwhat happens when there aren’t enough funds for all mandated services?
The district needs to borrow or otherwise procure funds from the State or elsewhere (they can only raise taxes after a successful referendum), because by law they cannot neglect legally mandated services.
In any event, by law they would have to cut out non-mandated services such as art, gym, culture, Pre-K, etc. before they run out of money for mandated services (such as busing). As of yet, there is still millions of dollars a year being spent on non-mandated services, such as the aforementioned examples.

Were you outed as a member of the Coffee Room underground, resulting in this heartbreak? 😉 Hatzlacha on finding your true bashert! Are you back into the thick of things?
JosephParticipantCA: He can buy a shifcha and they can have children without him freeing her from being a shifcha. The children, who will not be mamzeirim, can be freed by their father and become geirim.
Check the S”A Avi cited.
December 22, 2015 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm in reply to: Are the girls causing their own shidduch crisis?? #1120575JosephParticipanttechnical20: What is not great about advising girls not to date longer than necessary?
JosephParticipantGM: Suppose the husband was away for a year.
JosephParticipantyytz: The halacha is that at a mamzer’s bris it is publicly announced that the child is a mamzer.
ca: Can you repeat that in English?
JosephParticipantCA, I believe Avi’s idea is ruled halacha l’maaisa by the S”A as correct, regarding a mamzer having non-mamzer children with a shifcha.

December 22, 2015 2:16 am at 2:16 am in reply to: Are the girls causing their own shidduch crisis?? #1120563JosephParticipantHad it really now become normative or common for shadchanim to charge girls before they make a shidduch?
JosephParticipantTreif l’chol hadeios!
JosephParticipantDo you insist the school operate at a non profit or do you believe they are entitled to operate at a profit?
December 21, 2015 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm in reply to: The news everyone has been waiting for! Zuberman!'s return #1118249JosephParticipantWelcome Back Yossi!! Everyone please help roll out the red carpet.
Okay, the balloons are up, the fireworks is crackling and the lights are shining for the grand entrance and Beruchim Haboim.
JosephParticipantI’m going to categorically refuse to pay more than the school’s annual budget divided by the number of kids.
See DY above: “Also, having spoken to several administrators, I believe that it really does cost the tuition fee to educate your child, and the parents who can’t afford full or close to full tuition are being subsidized by the donations given to the yeshivos.”
It really costs full list price to educate your children. The poor children’s subsidy is coming from donors not other parents.
December 21, 2015 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157044JosephParticipantAbba, the bus companies and drivers would have been notified in advance that effective Jan. 30 the yeshiva will be opening later and no school officials or adults will be there earlier. Therefore the bus companies and drivers will know long in advance that they cannot drop them off there until the new later time. And they won’t because it is a crime of child endangerment for the driver to leave them unattended, let alone the financial liability for the company.
LC, if the bus isn’t getting the children from the route for the second yeshiva until an hour after school starts then the district is failing to fulfill its mandate under the law to get the children to school on time. If so, the district will have to reimburse all the second route children to obtain alternate method of transportation, since they by law are mandated to get them to school on time. And the reimbursement will cost them far more than what a contracted bus route costs them. (And the can’t blame the parents or children from the second school for the fact that the first route from another school is opening later. In fact the can’t punish the parents/children from the first route either since the district’s busing mandate is to the parents/children rather than to the school.)
December 21, 2015 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157042JosephParticipantNo, when a tax increase is rejected by the voters it cannot occur anyways unless a revote is held and it is approved the second time by the voters. If it is rejected the second time, then the school budget, by law, must be reduced (from the non-mandated portions like art, pre-k, etc.)
JosephParticipantSomeone wearing a rowdy t-shirt or hanging a picture on their window might also not have intended for people to stop and stare at it but better be able to accept when people do stop and look at it. If someone expects or hopes anyone will look at something he’s publicly displaying, such as paraphernalia on his dashboard, he should be prepared if everyone takes a look.
December 21, 2015 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157038JosephParticipantThe State cannot impose a local tax increase without the voter’s approval. Didn’t happen in Roosevelt and can’t happen in E. Ramapo or Lakewood.
December 21, 2015 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm in reply to: Are the girls causing their own shidduch crisis?? #1120550JosephParticipantOne can ruin things with bechirah.
Can one’s bechira only ruin it for themselves or can one ruin someone else’s bashert?
December 21, 2015 4:02 pm at 4:02 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157031JosephParticipantAnd if the voters vote down any tax increase at the ballot box what will happen? Mandated services including busing of private school children cannot be cut. If Yiddish can be cut out of special ed so can Spanish be cancelled out of special ed.
December 21, 2015 1:43 pm at 1:43 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157027JosephParticipantZD: The ER monitor has no mandate under the law. The board is free to legally ignore him and disinvite him from any participation. Their cooperation is completely voluntarily.
December 21, 2015 11:59 am at 11:59 am in reply to: The differences between Yeshivish and Chasidish marriages #1118188JosephParticipantI’ve seen multiple times non-chasidish girls marry chasidish boys, but these girls went through the standard beis yaakov system.
December 21, 2015 11:55 am at 11:55 am in reply to: Are the girls causing their own shidduch crisis?? #1120544JosephParticipantI read in some seforim hakedoshim some pretty harsh words against shadchanim.
JosephParticipantAre you talking about the case where an Arab couple and their child was murdered?
December 21, 2015 2:57 am at 2:57 am in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157022JosephParticipantAbba, that is an interesting suggestion you made about parents changing their non-mandated bussing children to a further away Yeshiva, this making him a mandated bussing student (and eliminating the savings for the board.) It is well worth considering.
Regarding my earlier suggestion that the yeshivas modify the times, the bus drivers cannot legally dump minor children on the street in front of a closed, unsupervised, school. So the driver will be forced to wait till the Yeshiva opens up. Meanwhile the next shift of students from the other schools will need to be picked up while the first bus is waiting.
December 21, 2015 1:00 am at 1:00 am in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157018JosephParticipantThere is not legal requirement to teach Special Ed students in any language besides english and no requirement to adhere to cutural requirements , you might think there is, but there isnt
Really? Wow. Then the E. Ramapo Board of Ed can cancel all Spanish language and cultural services and save millions of dollars.
JosephParticipantDoes the 100K figure include your wife’s income or just yours?
December 20, 2015 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157013JosephParticipantAbba, please address my last comment above addressed to you.
December 20, 2015 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm in reply to: The differences between Yeshivish and Chasidish marriages #1118183JosephParticipantDo we disregard the Gemora on things that have changed?
JosephParticipantPlacing something on your dashboard, especially with the intention for it to be seen when parking in public, is hardly a private thing.
JosephParticipantIt’s a package deal. With her you get the Bill.
JosephParticipantHillary is a bigger jerk. For all his many faults, and he has many, I’d take Trump over Clinton, who has immeasurably more and bigger faults than Trump, any day of the week.
December 20, 2015 2:45 am at 2:45 am in reply to: The differences between Yeshivish and Chasidish marriages #1118179JosephParticipantmdd, the Gemora says, and Shulchan Aruch paskens halacha l’maaisa, that a father can marry off (not just engage) his minor daughter.
MDG, your didn’t answer my question where the Gemora makes the chiluk you cited in its name.
December 18, 2015 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm in reply to: The differences between Yeshivish and Chasidish marriages #1118176JosephParticipantMDG, where in the Gemora do you read that chiluk you made?
JosephParticipantYou missed syag by about half a week since she quit the CR.
December 18, 2015 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm in reply to: The differences between Yeshivish and Chasidish marriages #1118174JosephParticipantSome abuse victims are also content to stay where they are.
mdd, doesn’t the Gemora say that a woman would rather be married to a bad husband than to not be married?
December 18, 2015 3:35 pm at 3:35 pm in reply to: The differences between Yeshivish and Chasidish marriages #1118169JosephParticipantI haven’t heard of that. By the chasidim the chasuna is usually a year or so after the beshow. Maybe the Litvish did it differently in pre-WWI Europe and had a quickie wedding.
December 18, 2015 5:16 am at 5:16 am in reply to: The differences between Yeshivish and Chasidish marriages #1118167JosephParticipantmdd, the boy and girl always both have a right to veto the match.
