“Why you pay more if you wait to buy a plot when someone dies:”
If I’m dead, I won’t have to pay anything.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant“Nes Gadol Hayah Po”
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantSo if you want to have a good marriage, all you need to do is to avoid tv, movies, and goyish music, and you’re all set!
Sounds simple, since I already avoid these things. But, wait, what if I watched tv as a child and teenager? Is my marriage doomed?
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantyw = you’re welcome.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipante/o = everyone. yw.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant“If it is your child, be very careful how and when you physically discipline them, a potch on tuchas in public could lead to a social sevrices agency investigation.”
Are you serious? Even if the kid ran into the street and the parent wanted to be mechanech them not to do so? (classic example of THE case that it is ok to potch a child).
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant“ZD- because they don’t get full funding from the government.”
Which is why they are called “atzmai”.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantParents have to pay for the last two years of BY high school (the fifth and sixth years – what would be considered seminary and college in the US, but in EY it is an extension of high school).
Are Bais Yaakovs really completely free? I hadn’t realized that.
A lot of people do send to private schools. It very much depends on the neighborhood. In one neighborhood that I know of, nearly all the Yeshivish people sent to the private school (the Bais Yaakov in that neighborhood did not have a good reputation at that time).
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantHealth, good post, I’m very impressed.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantsorry – they are there now – I either didn’t see them or they weren’t up yet when I checked.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant?
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantJust to clarify why I bumped this thread – I actualy bumped about a half a dozen threads all starting with the word “The” because of a comment that “Hashem is reading” made.
However, the moderators either deleted my other bumps or they haven’t moderated them yet, so the joke got a bit lost along the way 🙁
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantHM – I think maybe you misunderstood CTLawyer’s post – he does appreciate the garbage men, that is why he tips them!
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantCT – that’s really thoughtful and nice of you!
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantRY – really? Why?
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantHashkafahmaster, And what if it happens in a way that is clearly completely assur (as opposed to what’s being discussed in this thread which doesn’t necessarily fall in that category)?
The ends doesn’t always justify the means.

Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantnfgo3 – +1 People get mad at them when they should be thanking them!
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantDo you really find that to be the case? I’m just wondering, since I wouldn’t know, never having been one.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantMeno, I guess some people don’t like the “n” word (no). They consider it offensive.

Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantBenignuman: “GAW, It seems to me that dating by definition is non-platonic activity.”
Which is exactly why I have an issue with the following two sentences:
“and playing or having fun in a non-platonic manner (“????”).”
“… because the whole purpose of such places is schok, which is asur to engage in with the girl.”
If: A. Schok = having fun in a non-platonic manner
and B. A date by definition is non-platonic.
Then,C: it can’t be assur to have “schok” on a date.
The whole idea of a date is that it’s not platonic, so it has to be okay to have a non-platonic relationship for the purpose of marriage. Unless you think that everyone’s parents should marry them off and no one should date at all, but the Gedolim are certainly not saying that (and they do know that people date even if they don’t know exactly what they do on dates).
Also, I was always taught that “there’s no such thing as a platonic relationship” which is why men and women are not allowed to talk to each other more than necessary (but if it’s necessary it’s allowed even though it can’t be platonic).
December 15, 2016 11:56 pm at 11:56 pm in reply to: renting an apartment in lakewood for a month #1200526Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantLakewood goes through different tekufos in terms of rentals. There are times when there is a lot of building. When that happens, there is a surplus of apartments. There are other times when there is less building. When that happens, there are not enough apartments.
There was a period of time a few years ago when it was next to impossible to find an apartment for rent in Lakewood. It was during that period of time when people started to move to Tom’s River (although there may be other reasons as well).
For the past half a year (maybe a bit longer – I don’t know when it started), there have been a surplus of apartments so the prices have gone down.
But presumably, this can change again. It goes by how much building is being done (that’s what I was told by the Masa u’matan guy when I called him to ask him when the best time to look for an apt. for rent is).
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantWhy in the world would you get blocked? You seem like one of the nicer non-confrontational posters here from what I’ve seen.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantWow – people really get practical info from the CR! Amazing!
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantPBA- I like your comment about dating posters.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI wrote a long post that got deleted.
But if you bumped it, you must have had a reason.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantRY – Maybe it depends on one’s age, but I don’t think that’s true. There is a reason that people are getting insulted by the term and they don’t get insulted by idiot (unless they are the one being called idiot – come to think of it, why does anyone think it’s okay to use these kinds of words in the first place? Isn’t there a halachic issue in any case with calling someone names?)
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantThat happened to me years ago in EY. I don’t think she was unconscious; I think she just hurt her leg, but I don’t remember the details.
I happen to be terrible in emergencies, but I went to the nearest payphone (this was many years ago), figured out the number to call for emergencies (I think it was listed on the phone) and called. I then waited with her until the ambulance came.
I went to Shaarei Tzedek on Shabbos to try to visit her but couldn’t find her. So I guess she was okay in the end. I remember it was Shabbos (when I tried to visit her) because I remember the way the receptionist reacted when I got nervous when she started looking the name up in the computer and I told her it wasn’t necessary. She laughed and told me that she’s a goy.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantAvrum – thank you so much for saying what I’ve been trying to say in a way that won’t be deleted by the moderators! And for wording it so clearly and to the point.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantThanks so much for being thoughtful enough to let us know the exciting news HappyGirlyGirl! I do think about you, have been wondering where you went, and am very happy to know about your Simcha!
Amen to LB’s bracha, and Mazel Tov!
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantDY – hope you don’t mind that I implied that your answer was unclear – I just wanted to make sure that LB understood that everyone was saying the same thing and there was no machlokes here.
Thank you for explaining why you phrased it that way.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantThe Halacha, according to the Mishna Berurah, is that you have until the next time you have to use the bathroom, no matter how many hours later it is.This is what all of you were saying (DY, Meno and Lubavitch Rabbi), but I’m not sure if it was clear.
Hope it’s clear now. Is it, LB?
That is why it’s best to say the bracha right away (in case you have to go to the bathroom again and then you won’t be able to say it anymore).
December 15, 2016 9:18 am at 9:18 am in reply to: renting an apartment in lakewood for a month #1200515Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI just heard that theres an overabundance of apartments in Lakewood right now so the prices have gone down.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantAnother nafka mina is that no one considers it a negative reflection on someone if they are blind. No one wants to be blind, but no one thinks badly of blind people and blind people are not embarrassed that they are blind.
On the other hand, it is embarrassing to be stupid, and no one wants to admit that they are stupid.
In general, if people makes fun of an attribute that no one really considers a negative reflection on the people who have it, then it’s not offensive, but if it is an attribute that people really consider to be one that reflects negatively on those that have it, then it is offensive.
For example, I don’t get offended by blonde jokes because I don’t think there is any reason to associate being blonde with being dumb. On the other hand, I do get offended when people make fun of fat people, because people really do think that it’s bad to be fat.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantPS to previous post: I would have trouble following it myself if I hadn’t written it.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantSo I thought about the difference between calling someone blind and calling someone retarded:
The nafka mina is as follows. When you call someone retarded, why is it offensive? It is offensive because you are using the word retarded to say they are stupid and in so doing you are implying that retarded people are stupid, and since retarded people would get insulted if they heard that you consider retarded people to be stupid, therefore it is offensive to retarded people.
Now you are probably thinking: Obviously retarded people are stupid, so what’s the problem? However, I was at a friend’s house who has a daughter who is retarded. My friend’s husband asked his daughter if she knew a certain fact. The daughter’s response was, “Of course I know; I’m not stupid.”
This goes to show that even retarded people consider it offensive to be considered stupid and they do not consider themselves to be stupid, and they would be very offended if someone else called them stupid.
And when you use the word “retarded” to mean that someone is being stupid, if a retarded person were to hear you, they would be highly offended as you are implying that retarded people are stupid (and they don’t think so since everyone considers “stupid” a bad thing to be).
On the other hand, no one considers it an insult to be blind. It is negative to be blind but it is looked at as something bad that happened to the person as opposed to a negative reflection on them. So why is “blind” used as an insult if no one thinks that being blind is a negative reflection on a person?
It’s because when the term “blind” is used as an insult, what it really means is “stupid”. When you say to someone, “How did you not see that? Are you blind?” You are not trying to imply that he has poor eyesight; you are actually telling him that you think he is stupid and you are using the word “blind” to mean stupid. After all, when is the last time you hear someone say to someone “What, are you near-sighted or something?” (If someone said that to me, I’d just say yes).
The difference is with the blind person, even though you are using the word “blind” to mean stupid, you don’t really think that blind people are stupid. If you did, then it would be offensive to blind people. You are actually using the word blind to mean something completely different. Basically, it has two entirely different meanings.
I guess the idea is that it’s stupid for someone with vision to not see something, but no one considers it stupid for someone who is blind to not see something. Therefore, you are not offending blind people by calling someone with vision blind. On the other hand, if someone who is retarded is retarded they are considered to be stupid, so you are offending retarded people when you call someone who is acting stupid retarded.
I hope that my long explanation is clear, because if it’s not, then that might mean that you are _________ (fill in the blank as you wish).

Just curious – this is a personal question, so you don’t have to answer: Do you think that you grew from your experience?
