Ooops I forgot that clowns are actually in style right now and unfortunately they are the creepy ones. So rewind and let’s pretend that I never said that.

    Starting new:

“Would people still wear regular shoes? “

If they lived on an island, they didn’t wear regular shoes to begin with.

If they lived on the mainland, then yes they would wear regular shoes, but only at simchas. Unless you are what’s her name in The Wizard of Oz, because then you would only wear red shoes so long as they sparkled.

lilmod ulelamaid: Interesting… never heard of “Outside Inside” by Gila Manolson. I shall put it on my to-do list thank you.

I listened to an hour and five minute shiur this morning on soulmates on TorahAnytime. The rabbi mentioned a quote that says something along the lines of, “A tzaddik gets a good person and a rasha gets a untznius woman.”

—Why not say a rasha gets a rasha? Because the way to tell if a woman has emuna is through her modesty. He said that yes it’s possible that some people are religious on the outside and not the inside, but to look for emuna in the other person and men should def look for a modestly dressed woman.

    Gosh it’s so serious.

It’s cool to hear about your observation that “people who are nicer and sweeter and better at bein adam l’chaveiro often seem to have a harder time with tznius.” I wonder if that’s a general theme.

Btw: Thank you for highlighting my strengths and being so resourceful <3

Abba_S: “The last thing I need is the IBT (International Brotherhood of Thumb Suckers) picketing outside my house so try not to publicize it.”

If only more people thought like you before they spoke! Last year two families on my block were picketed by IBT. It was horrible. They blocked traffic all morning. I had to leave an hour earlier just to drop off the babies at preshiva (pre-K yeshiva, a step and a half above nursery school).

IBT is notorious for its lifesize baby billboards with derogatory messages such as, “Don’t oppose opposable thumbs,” and “My finger my mouth are none ya beeswax.”

Again, wise very wise of you.

The pen doubles as a pacifier so no I am not concerned for his safety. Though I appreciate your concern.

The invisible ink is visible under a blacklight. Both script and block letters are impeccable.

This thread was originally about erasers and getting a hechsher for eraser chewers. I hope it’s not about cannibalism because that’s so unkosher.

Such a smart thing to do! Once I was at a Rosh Chodesh and a lady said something really mean to me in front of everyone. It was insensitive and I don’t remember exactly what it was, but she was almost oblivious about it. The rebbetzin just stared speechless.

I didn’t respond, not because I was being intentionally polite, but I too was speechless. Afterward the rebbetzin complimented me on how I remained calm (again I was stunned and had no words). That alone did make me feel good(!) It def would have been a cool moment for someone to ask for a bracha.

Again… good, actually great to know.

A+ for implementing Torah into action 🙂

My former Jewish Studies professor literally told the entire class that women are superior biologically. Because they generally have more body fat than men, that’s why so many women were able to survive the Holocaust.

Granted I dunno whether or not more women survived than men. If so, then also the cause of “why” may be a speculation or partially causative, perhaps.

lilmod ulelamaid: Language-wise… personally I did not take your message as saying anything less than neutral about women. Thanks for explaining on the record just in case 🙂

“there is an inyan to ask someone for a bracha if they were insulted and held themselves back from responding”

Really? I feel like it would be our job to give that person a bracha. Then again, acknowledging the person’s courage and discipline by asking for a bracha gives him or her honor, so that also makes sense.

Thank you. Good to know if I ever come across this again

When I was a kid my family took a vacation to Florida. We lived up north and it was a special treat. It rained the whole time. Mosquitoes everywhere. It was still way worth it.

It’s the adventure and bonding that makes the experience. So even if the eclipse happens to be hidden that day, maybe they will have a good story to tell in the future.

Sometimes we plan and Hashem laughs right>?

I think people feel more responsible for children and their potential to grow in Yiddishkeit. Their parents, teachers, and community may feel more invested in them than the regular adult who has a mind of his or her own.

Ummm… I remember not being allowed to view a solar eclipse when I was in elementary school. We took paper plates and wrapped them in aluminum foil, in some way that allowed us to see a mirror image of the eclipse safely.

According to my memory of my teacher’s words, looking at an actual solar eclipse can be blinding.

Sorry to be a wet rag on the flame … maybe my memory is incorrect and a quick online search will show that it’s indeed safe?

Person1: Thank you for “most constructive thread of the year award”!!! It’s an honor to have people invest so heartfully in this discussion.

You said: “2. A little advice: you need to be smart in Avoidas Hashem. Often you can find ways to get around the yetzer ara without actually fighting it.

Tell me if you understand what I mean. If not I’ll try and think of some examples (The ones I could think of were too personal to share)”

If I know what you mean… I think it sounds like judo, where someone uses the opposing’s energy against him/her. So if the yetzar hara is coming at me, I can just do a little foot move and it collapses out of my way.

In real life, maybe that’s like when I finally found a skirt that covers my knees at Costco to wear under a dress that I’ve had for over a year.

Also, recently I have been purchasing business casual attire to build up my career wardrobe. The pants are way more conservative than my jeans, and the tops are long-sleeved. Plus these clothes makes me feel confident. So maybe that’s a way of not even dealing with the yetzar hara.

Still… when I go to the beach or exercise or go grocery shopping and go on walks with my dog, dressing tzniusly feels like oppression by fabric.

That’s the conundrum. Okay so maybe at some times I can step up my tznius game. Yet there is this divide where I feel like I am living a double life. Anyway, I know that this sounds like my YH has taken over my fingertips.

Please let me know if I caught the drift.

It’s possible to pretend to be smarter than one is… Like when one twin takes a test for another twin who wasn’t as prepared for the test.

    Or if a seventh-grade sibling does a first-grade sibling’s homework.

Little Froggie could really be Big Froggie giving Little Froggie the credit.

    Though that’s technically fraud.

    You’re talking about something else.

What about someone who has a dissociative disorder and speaks from one psyche at times (with profound intelligence), while mostly living from a less cognitively developed part most of the time?

    lilmod ulelamaid: Agreed.

I haven’t seen a full-on troll here or know what it would look like, baruch Hashem.

I think on other websites, the most “trolly” thing that I can think of is when someone posts on a forum and then someone says, “Oh I had the same problem and then I took some _________ and it solved it magically and coincidentally there is a great sale on _________ just click here.” Ohhh wait, maybe that’s a robot?

Well… a troll is here for kicks I think and stirs up people for no reason other than personal amusement at the person’s response. Actually I think I did come across something trollish a while ago and then realized that the best thing to do was disengage (which worked).

I feel like a faker sometimes because I come on here and am all baal teshuva, and then during the day I don’t always feel that way. Honestly though, thank G-d for the CR because it’s helped me be more confident and accepting of my current place. Instead of criticizing myself for where I am lacking, CR has helped me realize that there are so many places where I can grow and stay close. So I’ve been doing more because of spending more time being connected.
