We do not open doors no matter what the day is to anyone without a letter. The collectors know the rules, and yes, there are too many scammers around. If they can’t prove they are legitimate, no latter
lesschumrasParticipantImpersonating a police officer is a crime
lesschumrasParticipantSo, let’s assur any activity that might possibly, however remote, result in injury.
Golfer, it’s hard not to notice when 1.someone grabs an entire plate of Kishka for himself 2. When someone elbows you out of the way to get a chulent refill 3. When someone stands eating at the table and refuses to move etc.
Avram, boorish behavior is in the eye of the beholder. By your definition, a frum slumlord is committing an avaira by putting the lives of his tenants at risk ( bad wiring, no heat hot water etc)
lesschumrasParticipantIf you want to talk about gluttony, go to an after davening kiddush or a wedding smorgasbord. People stuff their mouths like their is no tomorrow, pile food on their plates then throw out half because ultimately their eyes were far bigger than their stomach
lesschumrasParticipantLU and Joseph, exactly where did you both get Smicha? Joseph says it’s assured and LU says it’s an avaira, but “is not sure”. Please stop issuing psaks unless you can cite chapter and verse which posek says it is assur.
lesschumrasParticipantDid you try finding a publisher? Why are you self_publishing? I would be upset with any tzedakah that wasted money publishing a vanity product
lesschumrasParticipantCT, even in your case, don’t the the public schools have to submit a budget request, with justification? Well, I would expect that all publicly funded private schools would also have to submit budget proposals, with justifications
lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, you don’t. You take govt money, there are strings attached
lesschumrasParticipantCT lawyer, Long Island school budgets are subject to voter approval
lesschumrasParticipantThere is a point people miss when calling for public funding of yeshivas. Outside of NYC, public school budgets are subject to scrutiny and must be approved by voters. The same would apply to a yeshiva that was publicly funded. Also, yeshiva parents are on school boards even their kids don’t attend. So, how do you keep non Jewish taxpayers off of taxpayer funded yeshivas?
lesschumrasParticipantYes, if one is an alcoholic.
lesschumrasParticipantLU, if the OP called and offered to to donate $100,000, the the tzedakah would sing a different tune
lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, how do you know which bochur is driving
lesschumrasParticipantDo we really need this thread? It just provokes the same tired arguments and attacks by both sides and changes nobody’s mind
lesschumrasParticipantDepends on what you like and price range. Most importantly, no drinking and driving
lesschumrasParticipantLU, the article did not say there was life on these planets. It said it found 3 Earth sized planets that that orbited in the same zone from their star that the earth does from the Sun It opens the possibility that life MIGHT exist there, but doesn’t guarantee it
February 21, 2017 11:04 pm at 11:04 pm in reply to: Coming to shul without a jacket for davening Shachris #1219696lesschumrasParticipantI’m not debating the need for a hat and jacket. Just pointing out that the president justification a. rgument is not a valid one. However what no one has pointed out is that the jacket should be clean and pressed. We’ve all seen boys/teens come to shul with jackets over creased shirts and with wrinkled pants that need to be cleaned. Sort of defeats the reason for the hat and jacket
lesschumrasParticipantThat’s their problem. And I meant to say people have been known to yawn in shul during the drasha
lesschumrasParticipantI don’t see the problem. Yawning is an involuntary, reflex action the body takes when someone is tired. Nothing wrong with it. People have been known to yawn during the drama. Since the purpose of Yawning is to draw in a large amount of air, closing your mouth does not help
February 20, 2017 3:11 pm at 3:11 pm in reply to: Coming to shul without a jacket for davening Shachris #1219684lesschumrasParticipantI know, but JFK and wife were viewed as fashion trendsetters
February 20, 2017 1:39 pm at 1:39 pm in reply to: Coming to shul without a jacket for davening Shachris #1219681lesschumrasParticipantHe didn’t wear one when he was sworn in at the Capitol and that’s the photograph/television image that people saw and remembered seeing
February 20, 2017 11:21 am at 11:21 am in reply to: Coming to shul without a jacket for davening Shachris #1219679lesschumrasParticipantThe president/King argument is somewhat specious. Growing up in the 50’s, that was the justification for wearing a hat. That all changed when John F Kennedy went hatless at his 1961 inauguration and, overnight, hats went out of style. The same is happening with jackets, albeit a lot slower.
lesschumrasParticipantX rays don’t reveal soft tissue injuries ; MRI’s do
lesschumrasParticipantAlso, I didn’t know staples had to be tznius
lesschumrasParticipantCT Lawyer , a pharmacist cannot be brought up on charges for doing what you did, offering an opinion and advice. What menicL SS book did you go to? My experience with our local pharmacies, including the chains, have been better than yours.
lesschumrasParticipantHealth, in your original post, your only criteria was money. Use a dentist because it was cheaper, you didn’t mention other criteria
lesschumrasParticipantLU, pardon me for asking but how can you offer any rational opinion when you readily admit that that you know little about history in general and virtually nothing about pre Haskala
lesschumrasParticipantLB, is there any superstition that you don’t accept?
lesschumrasParticipantHealth, are you sure you don’t teach in a progressive, liberal university? Someone disagrees with you so you issue personal insults. I’ve had two impacted wisdom teeth removed. On the first, I naively followed my dentists advice that he could do it ( he used your argument). However, this turned out not to be a routine extraction. Wisdom teeth are in the back of the jaw and this one had turned sideways and was deeply rooted. Four novacaine shots later and blood everywhere, he finally got the tooth out, leaving me with major trauma and a swollen face.
Four years later, same scenario with other lower jaw wisdom tooth. This time i went to an oral surgeon. With his extensive experience, he had the tooth out in minutes with minimal trauma and swelling
lesschumrasParticipantHealth, that was lousy advice. Would you have a general surgeon replace your knee with an implant?
lesschumrasParticipantActually, there is merit to it. Orthodoxy was much more flexible and open to changes prior to Haskala. What would the reaction be today if someone wanted to significantly modify the Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah davening? There would be an uproar. Yet that did happen without any problems. The kapitlach were composed between 700 and 1300; Kol Nidre could have been composed as early as 800 or as late as@100. Kabbalas Shabbos was added 500-600 years ago. With the emergence of Reform, all change was viewed as suspicious dangerous leading to more Record.

lesschumrasParticipant147, snow as a thirst quencher is a common misconception . While it may technically introduce moisture, it does so at very low temperatures. To people already in poor health, thinly clothed and in wintry conditions, snow can lower body temperature to dangerous levels
February 8, 2017 12:06 pm at 12:06 pm in reply to: Renovating Kitchen with New Sink —Assur? #1215606lesschumrasParticipantThis is just ankther example of people living inside a bubble. Did the OP ever consider that for seventy+ years, the vast majority of Jews in just the NYC area lived in apartments and dealt with only one sink? It is not a new issue?
lesschumrasParticipantAmona was not like Gush Katif. Amona residents occupied the site illegally
lesschumrasParticipantI’ve been asked twice to change seats on El AL. I had two requirements. 1. The seat also had to be an aisle seat 2. The seat could not be near a child. In one case I switched, in the other I didn’t
lesschumrasParticipantHow is a child free zone a potential halachic issue?
lesschumrasParticipantHere’s a problem. Let’s say the children free zone is row 10 to 20. If your sitting in row 20, you’ll still hear a screaming child in row 21
lesschumrasParticipantI agree and am deeply embarrassed , although the autocorrect word choice was interesting
lesschumrasParticipantLU, moron is a highly contagious illness that causes constant vomiting and diarrhoea. It usually runs its course in two to three days.
lesschumrasParticipantPink eye is highly infectious, that’s why. Kids constantly rub it because it itches. Then if another child touches anything’s they’ve touched and then the eye, they’re infected. Inmy office anyone with pinkeye is sent.home immediately
lesschumrasParticipantThere currently is a serious outbreak in the New York area of norovirus. It is extremely contagious and spread through contact. A number of public schools have temporarily closed as up to 30% of the student body was sick. Several years ago there was a serious outbreak in a Rockland County yeshiva and ironically, hand washing was identified as one of the causes. How? The virus causes diarrhea and vomiting . Unfortunately in this yeshiva the same sink was used for washing for both the bathroom and making hamotzei. The virus, which can survive on a towel ( the yeshiva used cloth towels ) up to 48 hours, was spread every time a boy dried his hands
lesschumrasParticipantThe positive: Trader Joe’s. 1. Many ( and unusual )kosher products. A number of the hashgacha symbols are unfamiliar but at the entrance they have a listing of what each symbol means, a contact name and phone number. B. Great customer service.Lines move quickly and they will quickly open additional registers get too long
The negative ( at any supermarket. You’re behind a customer with a fully loaded cart. You wait patiently. However, the customer apparently thought they were getting the goods for of time ringing up and bagging everything does the customer spend five more minutes rummaging through a pocketbook looking for a wallet
lesschumrasParticipantLU, actually what you said was that, with regards to vaccination , the benefits are only possibilities and the risks are only possibilities and that you have to weigh one against the other. If you had experienced the polio panic and the difference the vaccine made, you wouldn’t say the benefits are only possibilities
lesschumrasParticipantI meant LU. Sorry we’d about that
January 27, 2017 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm in reply to: Why leave your dirty tissue on the table in Shul? #1212584lesschumrasParticipantI should have made it clearer but the handshaking comment was a different issue and was directed towards men
lesschumrasParticipantLB, I don’t know how old you are but if you had any idea what life was like prior to vaccinations, your concerns of possible issue would disappear. I grew up in the 1950s and there was actual, not possible, terror of contracting polio. Every year tens of thousands of children came down with it, with survivors often crippled for life. Who can forget the images of kids being kept alive by an iron lung. When volunteers were sought in Pittsburgh ( where the vaccine was developed ) to test the new Salk vaccine, parents were so desperate that the lines ran for several blocks. Today, polio has been eradicated due to vaccination. Measles and smallpox were also killers
January 27, 2017 9:37 am at 9:37 am in reply to: Why leave your dirty tissue on the table in Shul? #1212578lesschumrasParticipantLU, on days that you have a bad cold, in all due respect, why are you in shul sneezing among people? What really bothers me is people who sneeze into a tissue repeatedly and then shake someone’s hand
lesschumrasParticipantLU , why do you make generalizations based upon one person’s experience. You wouldn’t generalize based on abad experience with one Rav, would you? Of all vaccines, flu is probably the least effective as it may end up not matching the actual flu strain
lesschumrasParticipantDY, if I don’t know enough to recognize that the halacha has been misapplied, then to me halacha is protecting the perpetrators
