There was a two minute clip put together by Trump s staff that illustrates the hypocricy of the Democrat’s firestorm. In this clip, virtually every major Democrat ( Sanders, Schumer, Pelosi, Reid, Kane and about 8 more) are shown demanding the Comey be fired or that Comey should resign. Now, they are blasting Trump for doing what, for the past few months, they were demanding

A Rav passes away and goes up to heaven. He asks where Gan Eiden and is pointed to a long line of people waiting to be processed. While waiting, an Egged bus driver arrives and is pointed to the Gan Eiden express line and is admitted immediately. When the Rav finally reaches the front of the line, he asks the angel why he, the Rav, had to wait hours while the Egged bus driver was admitted within minutes. The The angel explained that admission was based on results, not not titles. When you spoke, not only weren’t people inspired, they slept. But when the Egged driver drove, every passenger, frum or not, davened with all their heart

Joe, wake up and step into the real world. Numerous organizations that provide services to the community have been forced to close for lack of funds and Illinois is contractually obligated to pay them too. In the real world who comes first, someone providing mental health care, drug treatment or a lottery winner? Until a budget is passed, none can he paid no matter how many lawsuits you file.
Put another way, if a yeshiva has no funds to pay teachers ( even if they have a contract) filing a lawsuit wouldn’t produce money if the yeshiva didn’t have it

Joseph, spare me the technicalities. I said essentially they were bankrupt, not actually. If you’ve gone three years without a a lottery payment and Illinois, with no budget in sight and 11 billion dollars in other outstanding obligations, I wouldn’t count on being first in line when a budget is passed

Brooklyn is not two names mashed together. When the western tip of Long Island was settled by the Dutch in tn the 1600’s, they named the settlement Breuckelen after the Dutch city

Lynnbrook, , a village in Nassau County was renamed Lynnbrook in 1894 by reversing the two syllables in Brooklyn. It was done because many of its residents cane from Brooklyn

Part of the problem could be inept administration and too trusting of claims of poverty. My father in law served on the tuition committee of a yeshiva decades ago. He was sickened by the stories he heard and the schemes. One couple came dresses in shmattas to prove they needed a reduction. When asked for their tax return they said their son’s elementary yeshiva never did. Turns out the return said they were making 6 figures and could afford full tuition. .

Gestapo offers of ransom were not to be believed. They gathered 3000 Roman Jews and offered not to deport them in return for a huge payment. The payment was made and, surprise, the Nazis reneged and deported the Jews anyway

By the way kj, it wasn’t the Zionists who told the Jews to stay in eastern Europe when they had opportunities to leave before the US closed immigration in the 20’s

Going back to the sacrificial system is not so simple. Keep in mind that, for the most part, Temple Judaism and Rabbinic Judaism were substantially different and had very little overlap. Temple Judaism ( TJ) was centralized in Jerusalem in general and the Bais Hamikdosh in particular. There were no shuls, until the very end, and other than the Monday Thursday laining established by Ezra, and the Shma no prayer services until the end. The shmone esreh was formulated late in the Temple period. So, if we return to TJ, shouldn’t that entail going back to TJ in all its forms?

LU, their jobs are worth what their employer and society is willing to pay. Since you are talking your about frum teachers, it would appear that your argument is with the yeshivas that underpay them.
You’ll forgive me if I don’t accept your definition of work or what is beneficial to society. Movies are an art form, and like music, they benefit society. Sports, playing or watching, is a form of relaxation that many enjoy and, as such, is a benefit to society.
We live in a society, both frum and not, where every feels entitled. Being a teacher and a hard worker is great, but doesn’t entitle you to anything more than your employer is willing to to pay or what the market will bear.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but, in the end, it’s your opinion

in reply to: Government Programs for Low Income Families #1255344

LU, to address some of your points
    1. What people are paid is a function of their ability, the number of people who can perform those skills and the revenue that it generates.
    2. Making a movie is is actually hard work. It requires many weeks and months, often under less than ideal conditions. The salaries they receive is contingent on how many tickets are sold ( more sales increases salary for next movie)
    3. Athletic skills at the professional level is rare. There are only roughly 750 major league baseball players and 350 major league basketball players and the leagues generate billions in revenue. The players, who help generate that revenue share in it via enormous contracts.
3 . whether or not they benefit society is the eye of the beholder.
4.the professions you mentioned are important UT are not in the same category. They don’t require specialized, hard to find skills. Generally, the compensation of athletes and actors will diminish as their skills and marketability do. However, teachers, because of unions, can teach forever, get annual raises, regardless of how inferior their skills are. While yeshivas do not have unions, my daughter had her share of poor teachers whose biggest attributes were a willingness to work cheap and go weeks without a check. Excellent rebbeim should be well compensated but many yeshivas don’t have the cash flow to do it

That happened to my grandson years ago. Their was a bully on the bus bothering him and the yeshiva refused to act. Finally, my grandson, who normally shies from physical behavior, warned the bully to stop, punched him in the jaw and knocked him down. He told the bully if he kept picking on him, he’ll knock him down again. The bullying stopped.
The bully went crying to the administration who demanded an investigation. All the boys on the bus said the bully tripped and fell on his own

I don’t go to hotels because of the expense involved, but I do not begrudge those who do.

To me, everyone should mind their own business. If you want/need to go to a hotel , then go. If you want/need to stay home, then do so. Both should enjoy their Chag and not get worked up over what someone else is doing

Lilmod, if you read my posts, you’d see that I registered during the Vietnam War, when there was an active draft.
You keep conflating registration with being drafted and claiming it is assur. Do you realize that it is only one Rav who is creating the a problem? If registration is assur, how do you explain the past 40 years all the roshai yeshivas who allowed, and continue to allow, their students to register?

in reply to: about the protest in yerushalaim #1249873
    lesschumras
    Participant

Lilmod, not registering is viewed as an attempt to dodge the draft. Registration and being drafted are not the same and are not just semantics. Everyone registers at 18, not everyone gets drafted. I registered for the US selective service, but was not drafted.

I’m curious as when the actions of the government became subject to the approval of the gedolim. Israel is not a theocracy and never claimed to be bound by halacha. The gedolim have a right to object and not register. There is no right to riot and to object to the arrests that result.

in reply to: about the protest in yerushalaim #1249733

Lilmod, it seems that you avoided commenting on the riots by claiming a lack of knowledge.
However, lack of knowledge didn’t stop you from being motzei shem ra on the government.
The government does not draft chariedim. They do require them to register, whereupon they get an automatic exemption. The same applies, for example in the US. During the Vietnam Nam War, everyone had to register, and then apply for a 4D religious deferment.
The riots going on in Israel is because they refuse to register, which technically makes them draft dodgers and subject to arrest.
That is what makes this so frustrating. This “problem” goes away if, like all other yeshivas, they simply registered

The definition of male vs female clothes constantly changes. Just look at portraits from the 18th century. The well dressed man wore powdered wigs. At different points in time Jews in the middle East and North Africa wore robes. You can’t apply 21st century standards to prior centuries and vice versa
