lesschumrasParticipant
50 years ago there were a lot more stay at home moms. Today they have to work to pay tuition and other expenses.
lesschumrasParticipantLU, bad businessmen, contractors, store owners etc all hide behind accusations of lashon harah to rip off customers.
Again, you never answered where you received your Smicha so please refrain from issuing blanket psaks assuring things based on your opinionlesschumrasParticipantLU, why does it bother you so much that people don’t agree with you? Not everyone holds the same shitta
lesschumrasParticipantThere was a two minute clip put together by Trump s staff that illustrates the hypocricy of the Democrat’s firestorm. In this clip, virtually every major Democrat ( Sanders, Schumer, Pelosi, Reid, Kane and about 8 more) are shown demanding the Comey be fired or that Comey should resign. Now, they are blasting Trump for doing what, for the past few months, they were demanding
lesschumrasParticipantA vort is not necessary. Essentially it is an engagement party with a dvar Torah
lesschumrasParticipantLU, why are you avoiding the issue. When you tell a person something is assur, rather referring them to a Rav, you’re issuing a psak. What are your qualifications to determine what is assur?
lesschumrasParticipantA Rav passes away and goes up to heaven. He asks where Gan Eiden and is pointed to a long line of people waiting to be processed. While waiting, an Egged bus driver arrives and is pointed to the Gan Eiden express line and is admitted immediately. When the Rav finally reaches the front of the line, he asks the angel why he, the Rav, had to wait hours while the Egged bus driver was admitted within minutes. The The angel explained that admission was based on results, not not titles. When you spoke, not only weren’t people inspired, they slept. But when the Egged driver drove, every passenger, frum or not, davened with all their heart
lesschumrasParticipantLU, I agree with the moderator. What are your qualifications? Do you have Smicha? Where did you learn and for how long? On what basis do you deem yourself a posek?
May 7, 2017 3:55 pm at 3:55 pm in reply to: $50-million: Lump sum or installments of lottery winnings? #1271065lesschumrasParticipantJoe, wake up and step into the real world. Numerous organizations that provide services to the community have been forced to close for lack of funds and Illinois is contractually obligated to pay them too. In the real world who comes first, someone providing mental health care, drug treatment or a lottery winner? Until a budget is passed, none can he paid no matter how many lawsuits you file.
Put another way, if a yeshiva has no funds to pay teachers ( even if they have a contract) filing a lawsuit wouldn’t produce money if the yeshiva didn’t have itMay 7, 2017 11:50 am at 11:50 am in reply to: $50-million: Lump sum or installments of lottery winnings? #1270858lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, spare me the technicalities. I said essentially they were bankrupt, not actually. If you’ve gone three years without a a lottery payment and Illinois, with no budget in sight and 11 billion dollars in other outstanding obligations, I wouldn’t count on being first in line when a budget is passed
May 7, 2017 10:06 am at 10:06 am in reply to: $50-million: Lump sum or installments of lottery winnings? #1270753lesschumrasParticipantIllinois is essentially bankrupt as they have not passed a budget in several years and cannot spend money, including lottery payments. It was one of the first payments they suspended
May 7, 2017 7:21 am at 7:21 am in reply to: Brooklyn is two people’s names squished together. #1270623lesschumrasParticipantBrooklyn is not two names mashed together. When the western tip of Long Island was settled by the Dutch in tn the 1600’s, they named the settlement Breuckelen after the Dutch city
Lynnbrook, , a village in Nassau County was renamed Lynnbrook in 1894 by reversing the two syllables in Brooklyn. It was done because many of its residents cane from Brooklyn
lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, if you are that eager to die by torture, book a flight tomorrow to Syria, walk into an ISIS camp and burn a Koran. they will be happy to accommodate you.
lesschumrasParticipantPart of the problem could be inept administration and too trusting of claims of poverty. My father in law served on the tuition committee of a yeshiva decades ago. He was sickened by the stories he heard and the schemes. One couple came dresses in shmattas to prove they needed a reduction. When asked for their tax return they said their son’s elementary yeshiva never did. Turns out the return said they were making 6 figures and could afford full tuition. .
lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, if the issues 5are else take the job? , why would someone e
lesschumrasParticipantGestapo offers of ransom were not to be believed. They gathered 3000 Roman Jews and offered not to deport them in return for a huge payment. The payment was made and, surprise, the Nazis reneged and deported the Jews anyway
By the way kj, it wasn’t the Zionists who told the Jews to stay in eastern Europe when they had opportunities to leave before the US closed immigration in the 20’s
lesschumrasParticipantDY, I agree its not likely, but you avoided answering what you would do if it did. Today, there is little likelihood of someone in Israel who is learning will be drafted.
lesschumrasParticipantDY, you avoided the issue.
LU, in Israel you get a yeshiva deferment without having to prove you’re actually learning and progressing towards Smicha. In a war scenario, that wouldn’t happen in the US.
lesschumrasParticipantDY, here is what I don’t understand. If, chas vesholom, a war broke out requiring a draft, how could you keep your kids out of the US Army?
lesschumrasParticipantSo, in other words, Joseph guestimated, which is fine as long as he acknowledges this. BTW, Joseph, what was your source? And you still haven’t disclose the source for the number of newborns
lesschumrasParticipantJoseph,
According to Google:1 the TOTAL population of Lakewood Township in 2010 was 92,843
2.New Square’s 2010 population was 6,944
3.Kiryas Yoel’s 2013 population was 21,894Given the size of frum families, your family numbers appear to be high
4. Most hospitals don’t report admissions categorized by observance levels. I;m curious were you obtained your newborn stats
lesschumrasParticipantNisht, educate me. Name one prayer we say everyday, in a siddur that’s written in Yiddish. I’ve never seen one. A different, I’m talking about a regular siddur, not Tserena
lesschumrasParticipantAt least there are tefilos in Aramaic, I.e.the kaddish. There are none in Yiddish. However, Yiddish has a lot of curse words; I don’t know of any in Aramaic
April 20, 2017 11:42 am at 11:42 am in reply to: Question about sacrifices when Mashiach comes #1258191lesschumrasParticipantGoing back to the sacrificial system is not so simple. Keep in mind that, for the most part, Temple Judaism and Rabbinic Judaism were substantially different and had very little overlap. Temple Judaism ( TJ) was centralized in Jerusalem in general and the Bais Hamikdosh in particular. There were no shuls, until the very end, and other than the Monday Thursday laining established by Ezra, and the Shma no prayer services until the end. The shmone esreh was formulated late in the Temple period. So, if we return to TJ, shouldn’t that entail going back to TJ in all its forms?
lesschumrasParticipantLU, their jobs are worth what their employer and society is willing to pay. Since you are talking your about frum teachers, it would appear that your argument is with the yeshivas that underpay them.
You’ll forgive me if I don’t accept your definition of work or what is beneficial to society. Movies are an art form, and like music, they benefit society. Sports, playing or watching, is a form of relaxation that many enjoy and, as such, is a benefit to society.
We live in a society, both frum and not, where every feels entitled. Being a teacher and a hard worker is great, but doesn’t entitle you to anything more than your employer is willing to to pay or what the market will bear. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but, in the end, it’s your opinion
lesschumrasParticipantLU, to address some of your points
1. What people are paid is a function of their ability, the number of people who can perform those skills and the revenue that it generates.
2. Making a movie is is actually hard work. It requires many weeks and months, often under less than ideal conditions. The salaries they receive is contingent on how many tickets are sold ( more sales increases salary for next movie)
3. Athletic skills at the professional level is rare. There are only roughly 750 major league baseball players and 350 major league basketball players and the leagues generate billions in revenue. The players, who help generate that revenue share in it via enormous contracts.
3 . whether or not they benefit society is the eye of the beholder.
4.the professions you mentioned are important UT are not in the same category. They don’t require specialized, hard to find skills. Generally, the compensation of athletes and actors will diminish as their skills and marketability do. However, teachers, because of unions, can teach forever, get annual raises, regardless of how inferior their skills are. While yeshivas do not have unions, my daughter had her share of poor teachers whose biggest attributes were a willingness to work cheap and go weeks without a check. Excellent rebbeim should be well compensated but many yeshivas don’t have the cash flow to do itlesschumrasParticipantThat happened to my grandson years ago. Their was a bully on the bus bothering him and the yeshiva refused to act. Finally, my grandson, who normally shies from physical behavior, warned the bully to stop, punched him in the jaw and knocked him down. He told the bully if he kept picking on him, he’ll knock him down again. The bullying stopped.
The bully went crying to the administration who demanded an investigation. All the boys on the bus said the bully tripped and fell on his ownlesschumrasParticipantOld joke: for years bochur searched for perfect kallah and finally found her. There was unfortunately no shidduch as she was looking for the perfect chosson
lesschumrasParticipantThe OP starts this topic with a link to a harsh screed and then requests a civil discussion? There is no point to Pesach hotel discussions as nothing gets resolved.
I don’t go to hotels because of the expense involved, but I do not begrudge those who do.To me, everyone should mind their own business. If you want/need to go to a hotel , then go. If you want/need to stay home, then do so. Both should enjoy their Chag and not get worked up over what someone else is doing
lesschumrasParticipantLU, I’m still waiting for your source that most dati soldiers become not frum.
lesschumrasParticipantHow do beans and mustard fall into any of the kitniyos categories. They are not grains, are never made into flour, and do not rise as far as I know.
Sixty years ago peanut oil was sold and used on Pesach with a hecsher. What was the basis for considering it to be kitniyos?lesschumrasParticipantLilmod, if you read my posts, you’d see that I registered during the Vietnam War, when there was an active draft.
You keep conflating registration with being drafted and claiming it is assur. Do you realize that it is only one Rav who is creating the a problem? If registration is assur, how do you explain the past 40 years all the roshai yeshivas who allowed, and continue to allow, their students to register?lesschumrasParticipantLilmod, not registering is viewed as an attempt to dodge the draft. Registration and being drafted are not the same and are not just semantics. Everyone registers at 18, not everyone gets drafted. I registered for the US selective service, but was not drafted.
I’m curious as when the actions of the government became subject to the approval of the gedolim. Israel is not a theocracy and never claimed to be bound by halacha. The gedolim have a right to object and not register. There is no right to riot and to object to the arrests that result.
lesschumrasParticipantLilmod, it seems that you avoided commenting on the riots by claiming a lack of knowledge.
However, lack of knowledge didn’t stop you from being motzei shem ra on the government.
The government does not draft chariedim. They do require them to register, whereupon they get an automatic exemption. The same applies, for example in the US. During the Vietnam Nam War, everyone had to register, and then apply for a 4D religious deferment.
The riots going on in Israel is because they refuse to register, which technically makes them draft dodgers and subject to arrest.
That is what makes this so frustrating. This “problem” goes away if, like all other yeshivas, they simply registeredApril 3, 2017 10:15 pm at 10:15 pm in reply to: Forgetting your learning if you leave a Sefer open, unattended #1249537lesschumrasParticipantDY, with all due respect to Rav Shach, this sounds like stunting a babies growth by stepping over it. All I’m asking is are there documented cases. Not leaving a sefer open is Halacha;forgetting all your learning I find to be apocryphal and hard to believe it ever happened
April 3, 2017 7:03 pm at 7:03 pm in reply to: Forgetting your learning if you leave a Sefer open, unattended #1249483lesschumrasParticipantDoes anyone have any established, proven instances where someone left an open sefer and forgot their learning? How long does it take to lose it? Is it instantaneous?
lesschumrasParticipantHave a tag/garage sale.
April 3, 2017 1:47 pm at 1:47 pm in reply to: Winning the struggle for religious rights in the IDF #1249357lesschumrasParticipantAkuperma, so how do you explain the extensive government funding of yeshivas
April 2, 2017 7:33 am at 7:33 am in reply to: Forgetting your learning if you leave a Sefer open, unattended #1248205lesschumrasParticipantIt only happens if it is Maseches Bubba Maaseh
March 29, 2017 10:37 am at 10:37 am in reply to: Video of woman being attacked at peleg protest #1246540lesschumrasParticipantThe reason for not kicking another individual is negiah? you are kidding right?
lesschumrasParticipantBenk, I have two questions : 1. What is so terrible about a veggie burger? 2. When will you issue an apology for having jumped to an obviously wrong accusation, potentially affecting their business?
lesschumrasParticipantThe definition of male vs female clothes constantly changes. Just look at portraits from the 18th century. The well dressed man wore powdered wigs. At different points in time Jews in the middle East and North Africa wore robes. You can’t apply 21st century standards to prior centuries and vice versa
lesschumrasParticipantWhen they are in your house it’s not that simple
March 13, 2017 11:00 pm at 11:00 pm in reply to: Daylight saving time actually doesn't make sense. #1226122lesschumrasParticipantMammals, if your Stat is correct, then 25% of all people traveling east for 9ne time zone ( and thus gaining an hour) should also get having heart attacks
lesschumrasParticipantLB, ultimately you are correct in that you have to follow the path that works for you. Just keep in mind that concepts like male and female hangers, while they work for you, can be sources of humor for others.
lesschumrasParticipantLU, LB is obviously sincere but also quite naive. You can’t accept and and treat every minhag and old wives tale the same. From what I’ve seen, to her every word of every Rav must be believed as halacha mSenai. Somewhere and somehow she has to develop the ability to separate the wheat from the chaff. Utter naivete can be as ultimately problematic as utter cynicism
lesschumrasParticipantIf this is not Purim Torah you clearly have too much time on your hands
lesschumrasParticipantWell, you seemed to be disproving his statement by citing one player from a non_mixed marriage
lesschumrasParticipantCT, he didn’t say all were from mixed marriages, he said most
lesschumrasParticipantI give via organizations and tzedakahs authorized by the shul. The problem with giving small amounts to collectors is the demands for larger amounts.
