If 25 families back then were desperate enough to commit their kids to Utah ( where this was only one such facility; there were frum kids in others ) , who knows how many others there were whose parents either hadn’t reached that stage of desperation. I imagine that in the past 9years, the number of kids has grown

Joseph, you still haven’t justified people moving to Lakewood and Monsey in the 1970s and 1980s when they were small communities in light of your support of Rabbi Miller’s position.
In addition, Rabbi Miller was not considered a Gadol Hador by most authorities. Why do you feel anyone is bound by his point of view?

Joseph, you do realize that many survivors are not religious. Survivors who abandoned frumkeit cannot be rebuked by anyone who didn’t go thru the Holocaust.

Jakob. , if you go back decades, you can find storms, tsunamis, droughts, floods blizzards, windstorms, sandstorms, etc almost weekly everywhere in the world. WBhaiat makes these storms special?

I think part of this feeling was mentioned very early in the thread but got lost. It used to be very common for the price of kosher chickens and meat to rise significantly right before chaggim for no discernible reason .
For Pesach it was worse. About 20 years ago, the price gouging for non meat was exposed by a Long Island supermarket in my town owned by a non religious Jew. He had opened a brand new building across from his old one about a month before Pesach. His lease on the old store, now empty, still had two months to run and someone gave him the idea of a Pesach superstore. When he saw what the wholesalers were charging ,for the same canned and paper goods he bought all year, he couldn’t believe it. He demanded that they charge regular prices unless they could justify the significant increase. They couldn’t and charged him regular prices and he passed those savings on. When I called my Brooklyn friends and they heard about it, they drove out and saved significant money.

I can still remember my mother complaining about meat prices. My uncle was a shochet in the Midwest and he would tell us that shechting was the same all year round and butchers could raise their prices because they could get away with it

Please dont justify the secular education by downgrading American schools. NYC schools are generally awful. However most suburban schools districts are excellent, including the one i libe in.
Leatning another language in yeshiva isn’t helpful if they are not learning English, math or writing.

When i was in yeshiva, the school grouped us by ability. There was an elite shiur, a middle of tje road shiur and a needs help shiur. If the school isn’t big enough, then it’s the rebbe’s job and responsibility to not take the easy road and focus on one group ( usually the best students). It’s not impossible. For decades children in different age groups werr successfully educatex in one room schoilhouses. It’s not fair to add to the financial burden of already stressed parents

Jakob, you’re so right. I’ll tell that spoiled person to pull his kids from yeshiva and put them in public schoil. By saving 5 tuitions, he can replace that fancy 10 year old car

Girls yeshivas have been piling on the homework for years. My friends daughter would often not get to bed before midnight.
When i was in yeshiva h.s. 55 years ago, my school day startec st 9 am and ran until 6:10. I had t0 leave the house at 7:30 in the morning and was lucky to return home by 7:30 . After sitting down to eat supper, i was usually too tired to do any homework and never did any.

Joseph, what is the relevance of your quedtion re gentile weddngs? How many do you go to? You could call 311 on modt bands at frum weddingd for far exceeding legal sound limits. Kudt because gentiles may do it doesn’t make it right

The Civil War was fought for one reason only : SLAVERY. The Missouri Compromise and the Kansas-Nebraska Act were failed attempts to avoid war by having an equal number of slave and free states; they didn’t address the desire or opposition of extending slavery into the western territories.
Southern men did enlist to defend their states, but their states went to war to defend slavery.
States rights as a war issue first appeared AFTER the war when Confederate president Jefferson Davis and other leaders tried to sanitize their war aims. In all of his pre war speeches and writing, Davis never mentioned states rights.
AmCT, you’re a lawyer. How can you say that the Jim Crow laws were the law of the land? They violated the 14th and 15th amendments and the Federalgovernment simply looked the other way
Lastly, Akuperma the South wasn’t crushed by its debt. It was crushed by two major reasons. First, it overestimated the importance of King Cotton. It’s biggest cash crop and Britain it’s biggest customer. Second , the Federal blockade of Southern ports. It slowly strangled the South as it’s effectiveness grew. Cotton had no value if you couldn’t export and England found other sources ( India). The South had vvirtually no industry requiring almost everything to be imported. But with the blockade goods became scarce, prices soared , with rampant inflation making Southern currency, and its debt, worthless.

Joseph,Arnold was not a British spy. He simply was embittered over others taking credit for his successes, particularly at the Battle of Saratoga. When he was passed over for promotion and accused of corruption, he was open to the suggestions by his English wife to switch sides.

ZD, are you channeling Joseph? According to one opinion, Hawaii and Alaska are on the Asian side. The Chazon Ish and other opinions ( as per the Star K ) say they are on the North American side. So, be ccareful when you make categorical statements about Halacha
