Joseph, another reason I don’t follow Rabbi Miller. The first time I saw my wife to be it was love at first sight. Unlike Rav Miller’s stereotypes, she did not paint her eyes, face or nails. Besides her beauty, what really shone through was her chesed, character and sweetness. We’ve been married 46 wonderful years

If 25 families back then were desperate enough to commit their kids to Utah ( where this was only one such facility; there were frum kids in others ) , who knows how many others there were whose parents either hadn’t reached that stage of desperation. I imagine that in the past 9years, the number of kids has grown
October 26, 2017 12:31 pm at 12:31 pm in reply to: The EXPLODING Opioid Crisis In The Frum Community #1390334lesschumrasParticipantSpeak to frum therapists in Flatbush and they’ll tell you you full their caseloads are. A few years ago I was in Salt Lake City. The Chabad rabbi told us that the nearby drug treatment facility had over 25 frum kids from brooklyn, Monsey, Lakewood, Long Island, LA and other frum areas. Why Utah? It’s the only state that permits underage children to be committed involuntarily by their parens.
It’s a big problemlesschumrasParticipantNisht, believe what you want and use any euphemism that makes you happy but it’s Hebrew.
October 19, 2017 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm in reply to: Are all these protests in Jerusalem really a kiddush hashem? #1387240lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, so you’d be ok if chilonim practised civil disobedience by marching into Meah Shearim on Shabbos playing loud music
October 19, 2017 6:12 pm at 6:12 pm in reply to: Are all these protests in Jerusalem really a kiddush hashem? #1387239lesschumrasParticipantThe legal method is to simply register and get your deferment, as has been done for decades
October 16, 2017 1:33 pm at 1:33 pm in reply to: Reinstitute corporal punishment as a legal penalty #1381664lesschumrasParticipantThere were no jail terms. Malkos or death penalty
Joseph, if you’re that bloodthirsty, only 200 years ago stealing a loaf of bread in England was punished with death. So, if the Lakewood people arrested for fraud were to be found guilty, you’d be ok with them being hanged?
October 15, 2017 10:14 pm at 10:14 pm in reply to: Moving to the suburbs to escape the Orthodox ghetto #1381347lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, you still haven’t justified people moving to Lakewood and Monsey in the 1970s and 1980s when they were small communities in light of your support of Rabbi Miller’s position.
In addition, Rabbi Miller was not considered a Gadol Hador by most authorities. Why do you feel anyone is bound by his point of view?
Lastly, you can’t have it both ways re Daas Torah. Talmedai Chachomim are not infallible , especially on subjects on whi h they have no knowledge ( despite anecdotal stories to the contrary )lesschumrasParticipantI find these Yiddish-centric criticisms amusing. What is particularly Jewish about Beryl, Muttle, Shmeel, Gittel, Heshy, Elka, etc ? You can not find them anywhere in Tanach and did not exist before the Middle Ages. I can picture Rashi in 1100 saying what kind of name for a Jewish girl is Shprintzer?
lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, you do realize that many survivors are not religious. Survivors who abandoned frumkeit cannot be rebuked by anyone who didn’t go thru the Holocaust.

Child molestation has been going on for DECADES. My sister was molested 65 years ago. Until stories began to be aired, its existence was denied. Sakanas nefoshos made the exposure halachacly spproved.
Medicaid, Section 8 and food stamp fraud has neen an open secret for decades. Why did it take indictments and public exposure to get the Lakewood to hold meetings to urge people to stop the theft? Why didn’t the gedolim put a stop to these practices a long time ago?
By the way, witj your regard to your proof case. Citing a cade where you know none of tje details is not exactly convincing, since the Nazis didn’t need articlles to kill Jews.

Jakob. , if you go back decades, you can find storms, tsunamis, droughts, floods blizzards, windstorms, sandstorms, etc almost weekly everywhere in the world. WBhaiat makes these storms special?October 1, 2017 2:06 pm at 2:06 pm in reply to: Why is hashem punishing the Caribbean islands? #1374337lesschumrasParticipantHello, hurricanes during the hurricane season and earthquakes in Mexico and Japan are not out of thr ordinary. We’ve had only 13 named storms so far. When Wilma devastated Florida in 2007 during chol hamoed, it was the 23rd named storm at that point and it was still September
lesschumrasParticipantI think part of this feeling was mentioned very early in the thread but got lost. It used to be very common for the price of kosher chickens and meat to rise significantly right before chaggim for no discernible reason .
For Pesach it was worse. About 20 years ago, the price gouging for non meat was exposed by a Long Island supermarket in my town owned by a non religious Jew. He had opened a brand new building across from his old one about a month before Pesach. His lease on the old store, now empty, still had two months to run and someone gave him the idea of a Pesach superstore. When he saw what the wholesalers were charging ,for the same canned and paper goods he bought all year, he couldn’t believe it. He demanded that they charge regular prices unless they could justify the significant increase. They couldn’t and charged him regular prices and he passed those savings on. When I called my Brooklyn friends and they heard about it, they drove out and saved significant money.I can still remember my mother complaining about meat prices. My uncle was a shochet in the Midwest and he would tell us that shechting was the same all year round and butchers could raise their prices because they could get away with it

Unfortunately, history has shown this not to be the vase.
lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, please stop complicating things and mixing apples and oranges. The tshuvas dealt with starting a new shul, not an individual leaving an existing shul to join another existing shul. Different issues

lesschumrasParticipantSlominer, i did answer. He owes nobody an explanation. If he chooses to offer one, a simple goodby would suffice. He doesn’t need the rav’s permission
lesschumrasParticipantSlominer, there is no right or wrong.
lesschumrasParticipantWhy do people insist on complicating everything. You don’t need permission to shift nor do you owe anyone an explanation. I can see how it would be different in KJ or New Square

lesschumrasParticipantYitzchokim, ok so i can’t type well on a phone. I give approximately 10% of my income annually to various tzedakas so i don’t advocate not giving.
Please dont justify the secular education by downgrading American schools. NYC schools are generally awful. However most suburban schools districts are excellent, including the one i libe in.
Leatning another language in yeshiva isn’t helpful if they are not learning English, math or writing.lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, you keep citing the Chassidish communities as an an proof thst arranged marraiges and young ages with minimal dating produces long lasting , successful marriages. However, you always fail to mention one crucia element, the environment and culture that thybridsey are raised in. Girls are taught from day one that they’ll get married before the 20 to someone their father selects and divorce is never an option. Can you imagine a BY giirl agreeing to no say and no divorce? Different cultures
September 14, 2017 10:01 am at 10:01 am in reply to: Is hiring a tutor besides paying tuition the new normal? #1363401lesschumrasParticipantWhen i was in yeshiva, the school grouped us by ability. There was an elite shiur, a middle of tje road shiur and a needs help shiur. If the school isn’t big enough, then it’s the rebbe’s job and responsibility to not take the easy road and focus on one group ( usually the best students). It’s not impossible. For decades children in different age groups werr successfully educatex in one room schoilhouses. It’s not fair to add to the financial burden of already stressed parents
lesschumrasParticipantAren’t we raising a generation of poor, barely employable generation ny sending them to schools that barely, if at all, teach English, math and how to write?
lesschumrasParticipantJakob, you’re so right. I’ll tell that spoiled person to pull his kids from yeshiva and put them in public schoil. By saving 5 tuitions, he can replace that fancy 10 year old car
lesschumrasParticipantSyag, dad is kolel, mom works. What exactly are they supposed to do? Kids get sick and she can’t keep staying home
lesschumrasParticipantGirls yeshivas have been piling on the homework for years. My friends daughter would often not get to bed before midnight.
When i was in yeshiva h.s. 55 years ago, my school day startec st 9 am and ran until 6:10. I had t0 leave the house at 7:30 in the morning and was lucky to return home by 7:30 . After sitting down to eat supper, i was usually too tired to do any homework and never did any.lesschumrasParticipantAkuperma, I’m curious as to your source . Just looking at the NY area, Indian tribes occupied all of Long island and Manhattan Island, so clearly they didn’t avoid the coasts.
Indians also lived on all of the Caribbean islands.Everywhere the English landed, they encountered indians on the coasts. A special gift that the English and spanish brought did lead to depopulation of the Native American people. Smallpox.
It was the scourge of 17th century Europe and the indians, having never been exposed to it, had no resistance and were devastated.lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, what is the relevance of your quedtion re gentile weddngs? How many do you go to? You could call 311 on modt bands at frum weddingd for far exceeding legal sound limits. Kudt because gentiles may do it doesn’t make it right

lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, n all seriousness, what would such a Gadol say to a family that lost a parent and followed his shita and now had to go begging?
lesschumrasParticipantWhat I find interesting is that the posters who are ripping the movie and declaring it assur haven’t seen it. Every review I’ve read said that it is one of the few movies that puts Chassidim in a positive light. Of course, what do they know, they’ve actually seen it
lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, you actually don’t know that.
lesschumrasParticipantIt is possible. It would explain why the Apaches only use chalav yisroel
August 22, 2017 2:31 pm at 2:31 pm in reply to: Here we go again with alleged theft of public funds #1345243lesschumrasParticipantAvi k, what you say makes sense but doesn’t always work. Some recent examples. A trusted frum CPA was just sentenced to 5 years in Federal prison for stealing payroll taxes; a frum real estate attorney was convicted of stealing millions in escrow funds; a frum CPA ( and former day school president ) was indicted for falsely certifying shell companies as legitimate as part of a multimillion dollar pump and dump scheme ; a frum, respected CPA firm helped a yeshiva defraud the state of $7 million.
Unfortunately, hiring professionals doesn’t always work.
lesschumrasParticipantubiquitin, you are absolutely right. They have better hours and require no appointments. I used one for the first time when I called my doctor with what ultimately turned out to be bronchitis on a Tuesday. After being told I couldn’t be seen until Thursday ( despite my pleading how sick I was ) I went to a local Urgicenter In less than an hour I was seen, diagnosed and had medication called into my pharmacy..
lesschumrasParticipantI assume the OP is talking about. Areas where people walk home in the street

lesschumrasParticipantAkuperma and CT, both of you have bought into the Southern mythology of the Lost Cause.
The Civil War was fought for one reason only : SLAVERY. The Missouri Compromise and the Kansas-Nebraska Act were failed attempts to avoid war by having an equal number of slave and free states; they didn’t address the desire or opposition of extending slavery into the western territories.
Southern men did enlist to defend their states, but their states went to war to defend slavery.
States rights as a war issue first appeared AFTER the war when Confederate president Jefferson Davis and other leaders tried to sanitize their war aims. In all of his pre war speeches and writing, Davis never mentioned states rights.
AmCT, you’re a lawyer. How can you say that the Jim Crow laws were the law of the land? They violated the 14th and 15th amendments and the Federalgovernment simply looked the other way
Lastly, Akuperma the South wasn’t crushed by its debt. It was crushed by two major reasons. First, it overestimated the importance of King Cotton. It’s biggest cash crop and Britain it’s biggest customer. Second , the Federal blockade of Southern ports. It slowly strangled the South as it’s effectiveness grew. Cotton had no value if you couldn’t export and England found other sources ( India). The South had vvirtually no industry requiring almost everything to be imported. But with the blockade goods became scarce, prices soared , with rampant inflation making Southern currency, and its debt, worthless.August 20, 2017 9:55 pm at 9:55 pm in reply to: Here we go again with alleged theft of public funds #1343209lesschumrasParticipantIf I misinterpreted it, then I apologize.
I find it interesting that a yeshiva can steal millions of dollars and it doesn’t bother you. IHowever, you are doing exactly what you accuse me of. You are misinterpreting what i said in order to ridicule me.
I don’tdeny non Jews have different Halacha. I simply suggested that it is those misunderstood differences that lead yeshivas and people to steal from the governmentlesschumrasParticipantJoseph,Arnold was not a British spy. He simply was embittered over others taking credit for his successes, particularly at the Battle of Saratoga. When he was passed over for promotion and accused of corruption, he was open to the suggestions by his English wife to switch sides.
By the way, the British did not view him as a patriot. When he arrived in London, instead of the accolades he expected, he discovered that he was reviled as a traitor
lesschumrasParticipantAkuperma,’
Benedict Arnold was not a Loyalist, he was a traitor, a big difference. Loyalists were those who chose to remain loyal to King George. Benedict Arnold was a general in the Continental Army who made a deal with the British to turn over control of the fortress at West Point ( and with it control over the vital Hudson River ). When the plot was discovered, Arnold escaped and became a British general and moved to London after the warAugust 19, 2017 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm in reply to: Let’s Hock About The Woman On The Bus Who Refused To Move #1342710lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, what about an 11 hour flight to Israel?

August 15, 2017 5:41 pm at 5:41 pm in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1339688lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, Rash lived in northern France in the 11th cedntury and yiddish was a Germanic language that originated in Central Europe. I’d love to hear your source that he was fluent in Yiddish
lesschumrasParticipantZD, are you channeling Joseph? According to one opinion, Hawaii and Alaska are on the Asian side. The Chazon Ish and other opinions ( as per the Star K ) say they are on the North American side. So, be ccareful when you make categorical statements about Halacha
lesschumrasParticipantZD, all of Alaska is east of the Datelime. The said regarding Shabbos during the summer tourist season is how late it starts. We went with a kosher cruise so food was not an issue, nor was Shabbos. All electronic doors between the dining room and the salon that served as the shul were converted to manual and one eelevator was converted to Shabbos mode. The tour operator had their own, separate, kitchen

It just means 3 languages to learn instead of two -
