Neut, ” Daas Torah ” is not monolithic.
December 26, 2014 1:51 am at 1:51 am in reply to: Dating someone whose parents are divorced #1050047lesschumrasParticipantLior, I guess I still don’t understand why a child whose life is molded by dysfunctional parents who happen to stay married is preferable
lesschumrasParticipantI’ve always wondered about the application of the term ” glatt” to chickens
lesschumrasParticipantI agree that there is a growth in Yiddish speakers among Chasdidim. However, those numbers are offset by the ongoing passing of the postwar non-chassific Yiddish speakers and those born in US between 1930 and 1950
December 9, 2014 4:00 pm at 4:00 pm in reply to: Calling uncles and aunts without using their title #1136749lesschumrasParticipantRespect and honor are determined by how you speak to and treat a person, not by the title used.
lesschumrasParticipantAkuperma, the original German Reformers went out of their way to deny the existence of Jewish ethnicity. They defined themselves as Germans who followed the Hebrew faith. They called their synagogues temples because they denied any ethnic connection to the Jerusalem temple
lesschumrasParticipantMonroeyidd, why do you feel you can define the limits of your interaction with the government? They’ll draft you wether you vote or not
lesschumrasParticipantIt’s not a new community. It has about 900+ frum families, and several shuls, the largest of which is the Young Israel ( 700 families)
lesschumrasParticipantTransportation: the good- West Hempstead is two minutes from the highway ( Southern State Parkway ).
The bad: the West Hempstead branch of the Long Island Railroad is terrible. It is single tracked and has virtually no direct service to Manhattan. There is no service on weekends
lesschumrasParticipantActually, Ivory did make it up. Readers Digest is not exactly a trusted and reliable source. for sports. Former players are suing the National Football League for over a billion $ in damages for concussion related neurological injuries. Why would these same players seek to abolish the league? It would eliminate the source of the payout.( the players accepted a settlement offer of $750 million but the judge turned it down as being too low to pay for all the medical treatment that will be required over the next 20 years
October 23, 2014 11:52 pm at 11:52 pm in reply to: Haredim refusing to sit mixed on airplanes #1037045lesschumrasParticipantFrom what I’ve been told and observed, a handful of chareidim requesting a seat usually can be accommodated. Seat changes become an issue when there are 10 to 25 people requesting a seat change. Even if I you could somehow find 25 people willing to change, the flight will be delayed.
September 18, 2014 7:46 pm at 7:46 pm in reply to: Can you mix different types of ground meat? #1032712lesschumrasParticipantActually, this subject came up at our gemara shiur. Crossbreeding is forbidden but one is allowed to benefit from the results of crossbreeding ( I.e. tangerines )
lesschumrasParticipantWhat about Staten Island? Large Jewish community and houses under 550k
lesschumrasParticipantNisht, his mother is buried in a Jewish cemetery in Connecticut and his father was a rabbi and a butcher. The current rabbi of the shul that owns the cemetery said non Jews were not buried there
lesschumrasParticipantAkuperma, please get your facts straight. The Germans had superior numbers but Hitler kept his Panzer divisions at the Pas de Calais because he refused to believe Normandy was not a diversionary attack
lesschumrasParticipantAkuperma, what you are trying to at is that while there are no apartment houses, there are two family homes that offer rentals
lesschumrasParticipantHakatan,
Whose unbroken Mesora are you referring to? Sfardim? Yemenites? You also ignore the Chassidim, who threw away centuries of Minhagim and Nusach?
May 26, 2014 3:56 pm at 3:56 pm in reply to: For PF to Vicariously Rant Endlessly About the Over-Emphasis of Iyun through PAA #1045708lesschumrasParticipantI’m amused when people throw around the term ” mesorah”. Most people don’t know what their great grandparents did. They have no concept of Jewish history and assume Eastern European mesora is the only one. They think the current yeshiva/kolel system has always existed, that the order and content of tefilah has never changed. Mesorah is important to many people except when it’s not. The founders of Chassidus had no problem throwing away centuries of minhagim and nisuch.
lesschumrasParticipantOur shul used to have a kc ( I was not a member). We hired a new rav years back.He said he wouldn’t accept the position unless the kc ended. He got his way.
lesschumrasParticipantI’ve seen strange behaviour at Shiva calls. When a friends mother passed away, shadchanim and single women came to check out his father. Another friend was sitting in deceased mother’s house in Far Rockaway. Brokers made Shiva calls and tried to get my friend to hire them. Strangers treated the Shiva as if there was an open house to get an early look at the layout
lesschumrasParticipantI have a nice Sfira app. You can set the reminder alarm for the evening and the next morning ( in the morning there is no bracha ) and the alarms don’t go off on Shabbos an Yom Tov
lesschumrasParticipantI have the Okim app. 1. Texts do not appear 2. I do not use it in shul. I use it in places where siddurs are not available ( workplace and simcha minyans ) and for benching.
lesschumrasParticipantInwood is one of the Five Towns ( Woodmere,Cedarhurst,Lawrence and Hewlett are the other 4 ). Inwood never had much of a Jewish population and was not nearly as wealthy as the other 4
lesschumrasParticipantAkuperma, you forgot to mention the Crusader massacres, blood libels, pogrced exiles, burning of Gemoras etc. As for Sfardim, don’t forget the Spanish pogroms before the expulsion of 1492. Please don’t distort history. We were persecuted and had no rights
lesschumrasParticipantJust curious. These are anecdotes, not proof. There are talkers in my shul who don’t have cancer in their families. That it isn’t proof either.
lesschumrasParticipantThe attendees were confused. They thought they were still in shul
lesschumrasParticipantHow can anybody possibly know someone after one date?
lesschumrasParticipantHalevi, please correct me if I misunderstood,. Are you saying eating Gebroktz is a Kula? Thanks
lesschumrasParticipantAkuperma,
Talk about disconnected from reality. Name a Muslim country wiyh freedom of religion, particularly in the Mideast.
March 2, 2014 9:31 am at 9:31 am in reply to: What's your style when poor people come collecting at your door? #1006216lesschumrasParticipantSoftwwords,
So, how does a typical Charedi fanily living at or below poverty level come up with $100,000 per daughter? After paying airfare, living expenses and giving the dirver his share, it would take years going door to door
lesschumrasParticipantWhat you are describing is assisted suicide, which is a felony and sounds like an urban myth. Are you saying that the patient was not hooked up to IV’s and you didn’t object?
January 26, 2014 11:17 am at 11:17 am in reply to: story about pregnant brain dead woman in texas #999858lesschumrasParticipantFrom what I’ve read, the wife had always made it known that she wouldn’t want to kept on life support and that the fetus has so many health issues that it is not viable. If it were, the husband might have thought differently. But since it isn’t, why put the family through an emotional wringer
lesschumrasParticipantAn equally disturbing sight is a young mother with a stroller and two small kids in row jaywalking mid block on 13ave in Boro Park
lesschumrasParticipantAre you upset with how they reported or that they reported it at all
lesschumrasParticipant1. the 718 area code for Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island began in 1982,
2. I don’t believe the subway fare was ever 12 cents. It went from 10 to 15 and has always gone up in multiples of 5. A 12 cent fare would have created a nightmare for the token clerk in having to make change in pennies
lesschumrasParticipantNisht, That the Jewish Week and the NYT are anti Orthodox is no chiddush. I hope you weren’t defending the right to shecht acow in your back yard when local zoning laws forbid it
lesschumrasParticipantThe articles I read said she was guilty and was allowed to plead to a lesser crime. The judge decided to throw the book at her when. instead of being grateful for being allowed to plead to a lesser crime and receive a lenient sentence, she gave a very insincere allocution and then, outside the courthouse accused the judge of anti-Semitism.
The evidence that the prosecutor had included e-mails between Runge and her conspirators, in which she asked for invoices, a number of them phony, for the purpose of artificially raising the cost of the film so rhat tey could receive nearly $2 million from Iowa.
lesschumrasParticipant2scents, she had Hatzolla EMTs try to bully her into taking their patients first, regardless of diagnosis. Maimonides tolerated this behavior because they didn’t want the patients to be taken to Methodist
lesschumrasParticipantWhen you get to an ER by ANY ambulance you are triaged right away. If your complaint is minor, you’ll wait. However, my sister was A.D. ER nurse for many years and more than one rookie Hatzolla EMT tried to tell her how to do her job
lesschumrasParticipantHakatan, did zionism cause the Crusader destruction of German Jewry? The blood libels, pogroms, the Inquisition, the Chmielnecki massacres? Please don’t insult our intelligence by pretending Jews lived in peace before zionism.
lesschumrasParticipantContacts provide much sharper vision. Starting with hard lenses,I’ve worn them for 50 years. Ten years ago I had issues and was referred to a Dr who specialized in contacts. It was, worth it as,she had access to types my regular Dr didn’t
lesschumrasParticipantRealist, your logic is flawed. You can’t dictate that all women adhere to your standard of tznius
lesschumrasParticipantSince the individuals involved were not in yeshiva and love to fight, why not draft them!
lesschumrasParticipantDY, it doesn’t justify anything. I was just pointing out to Hakatan that Zionism was far from the only, let alone the largest. cause of shmad
lesschumrasParticipantHaKatan, shmad did not need a state or zionism. It began in Western Europe with the Enlightenment and the rise of Reform Judaism. In Eastern Europe the Gedolim made two miscalculations that led to far more shmad than zionism. They thought thst the depotic Empires that kept Jews confined to shtetls would remain in place and, like in previous centuries, Jews had no choice.
However, millions of Jews left for the US, with mass shmad resulting. With the Empires weakenibg and falling, far more Jews became Radicals,Anarchists, Socialists, and Communists than became zionists. And it was the Jewish Commmunists who did such an effective job in shmadding Jews trapped in the Soviet Union after WW1. Eueopean Jewry in the 30’s were experiencing what American Jewry is going thru today with respect to people leaving Yiddishkeit behind.
However, you are so blinded by your hatred of zionism, you don’t recognize any of the above. The original zionists were as anti-religious as all of the other movements, but they were a minor player in the shmadding of EuropeanJewry.
lesschumrasParticipantI was in Utah last year and according to the Chabad Rabbi in Salt Lake, Provo has the highest concentration teen age substance abuse rehab centers in the US. Why? Utah is the only state that allows parents,to commit a child without the Childs consent.the rabbi goes twice a week because of the number of kids there from LA Monsey Flatbush Williamsburg NJ and Lakewood.the kids range from MO Chasiddish and Yeshivish
July 3, 2013 10:03 pm at 10:03 pm in reply to: Biased CoverageWhy was the protest in Brussels totally ignored? #963650lesschumrasParticipantAkuperma, I saw an interesting statistic. The law requiring army service wasn’t passed until the 1970s. Until then a large percentage of chareidim did not learn full time. Ironically,it seems the universal learning currently exists was created by a zionist law
lesschumrasParticipantMonty Hall. His father was a Kosher butcher in Winnipeg
lesschumrasParticipantRabbiperfect, we’ve always had full-time learners. What is different is that in prior generations it was the elite; today it is everybody
lesschumrasParticipantYears ago someone asked the wine critic in the Times ” should I buy the $10 or $200 bottle?”. The critic asked if the man could tell the difference. When he replied that he couldn’t, the critic said, unless you’re a snkb, buy the $10 bottle
