I agree that there is a growth in Yiddish speakers among Chasdidim. However, those numbers are offset by the ongoing passing of the postwar non-chassific Yiddish speakers and those born in US between 1930 and 1950

Akuperma, the original German Reformers went out of their way to deny the existence of Jewish ethnicity. They defined themselves as Germans who followed the Hebrew faith. They called their synagogues temples because they denied any ethnic connection to the Jerusalem temple

Transportation: the good- West Hempstead is two minutes from the highway ( Southern State Parkway ).

The bad: the West Hempstead branch of the Long Island Railroad is terrible. It is single tracked and has virtually no direct service to Manhattan. There is no service on weekends

Actually, Ivory did make it up. Readers Digest is not exactly a trusted and reliable source. for sports. Former players are suing the National Football League for over a billion $ in damages for concussion related neurological injuries. Why would these same players seek to abolish the league? It would eliminate the source of the payout.( the players accepted a settlement offer of $750 million but the judge turned it down as being too low to pay for all the medical treatment that will be required over the next 20 years

From what I’ve been told and observed, a handful of chareidim requesting a seat usually can be accommodated. Seat changes become an issue when there are 10 to 25 people requesting a seat change. Even if I you could somehow find 25 people willing to change, the flight will be delayed.

    Hakatan,

Whose unbroken Mesora are you referring to? Sfardim? Yemenites? You also ignore the Chassidim, who threw away centuries of Minhagim and Nusach?

    lesschumras
    Participant

I’m amused when people throw around the term ” mesorah”. Most people don’t know what their great grandparents did. They have no concept of Jewish history and assume Eastern European mesora is the only one. They think the current yeshiva/kolel system has always existed, that the order and content of tefilah has never changed. Mesorah is important to many people except when it’s not. The founders of Chassidus had no problem throwing away centuries of minhagim and nisuch.

I’ve seen strange behaviour at Shiva calls. When a friends mother passed away, shadchanim and single women came to check out his father. Another friend was sitting in deceased mother’s house in Far Rockaway. Brokers made Shiva calls and tried to get my friend to hire them. Strangers treated the Shiva as if there was an open house to get an early look at the layout

The articles I read said she was guilty and was allowed to plead to a lesser crime. The judge decided to throw the book at her when. instead of being grateful for being allowed to plead to a lesser crime and receive a lenient sentence, she gave a very insincere allocution and then, outside the courthouse accused the judge of anti-Semitism.

The evidence that the prosecutor had included e-mails between Runge and her conspirators, in which she asked for invoices, a number of them phony, for the purpose of artificially raising the cost of the film so rhat tey could receive nearly $2 million from Iowa.

DY, it doesn’t justify anything. I was just pointing out to Hakatan that Zionism was far from the only, let alone the largest. cause of shmad

in reply to: The Draft and Mattos-Masei #966988
    lesschumras
    Participant

HaKatan, shmad did not need a state or zionism. It began in Western Europe with the Enlightenment and the rise of Reform Judaism. In Eastern Europe the Gedolim made two miscalculations that led to far more shmad than zionism. They thought thst the depotic Empires that kept Jews confined to shtetls would remain in place and, like in previous centuries, Jews had no choice.

However, millions of Jews left for the US, with mass shmad resulting. With the Empires weakenibg and falling, far more Jews became Radicals,Anarchists, Socialists, and Communists than became zionists. And it was the Jewish Commmunists who did such an effective job in shmadding Jews trapped in the Soviet Union after WW1. Eueopean Jewry in the 30’s were experiencing what American Jewry is going thru today with respect to people leaving Yiddishkeit behind.

However, you are so blinded by your hatred of zionism, you don’t recognize any of the above. The original zionists were as anti-religious as all of the other movements, but they were a minor player in the shmadding of EuropeanJewry.
