PBA, I’ve no idea what you’re talking about. I’m just pointing out that people who oppose expanded education for girls aren’t aware that Bais Yaacov was opposed for same reason.

It’s ironic but the ideology that today opposes Torah shebealpeh for girls opposed 120 years agobthe creation of Bais Yaacov or any formal Jewish education for girls

Why give your money to countries that gave up their Jews to the Nazis? An exception would be Italy, which protected Italian Jews and over 70% survived. In one incident, the Nazis rounded up over 1000 Roman Jews and demanded a ransom. Italian Catholics came up with the ransom money but the Nazis reneged and deported them anyway. Don’t confuse the Vatican with the local clergy. Local priests and bishops went out of their way to defy the Vatican and protect Jews.

Sam2, minhagim often don’t need, or have, a rational reason for being. Theoreticaly, one waits six hours to allow the body to digest the meat. If the six hours starts from when you bentched, then the six hour time frame is meaningless ( as one could end up waiting up to 8 hours ) and arbitrary.

Kj, the Crusader massacres, the Arab pogroms in Spain, the Black Death slaughters, the Cossack mass killings of the 1600’s, the Czar’s repeated pogroms all took place prior to Zionism. In fact, it was the Dreyfus trial and its demonstration of rampant French antisemitism that prompted Herzl to found Zionism.Jewry in Eastern Europe in the 20’s and 30’s was unfortunately catching up to Western Europe and the USA on the path toward assimilation.

In New York City it’s illegal to rent out an apartment using Airhub. Just this past week a landlord was able to successfully evictva rent stabilized tenant who was advertising his apartment thru Airhub. Airhub was made illegal because hotels lose revenue, the city loses taxes and neighbors dislike strangers coming and going at all hours of day and night

PBA, that was never an issue with my kids; we were on the same page. However, two close friends dealt with situation. A son came back from Israel and announced he was not going to college and would instead become a melamed in yeshiva. My friend didn’t argue but, every time his son asked for a sefer, his father bought them and showed him the bills. Finally, the son asked what was going on. My friend responded that 12_ yrs yeshiva, yeshiva in Israel and sforim are expensive. A life as a rebbe would not allow him to provide for his future family as his father had provided for him. My friend made it clear that he would not fund a lifestyle he disagreed with. His son ultimately got Simcha at YU and bacame a CPA. PBA, you call it cutting off. I call it the parents choosing to not fund a lifestyle they disagree with. One big problem is that most children have been so shielded that they have no clue as to how much a frum lifestyle costs nor what poverty means

FFBBT613, I’m not saying you’re obligated to endorse your parents lifestyle. Just don’t expect them to pay for yours. Have you given any thought how you are going to pay for airfare, living expenses and seminary tuition? Are you even aware of how much it costs?

When I lived in Brooklyn there were people who davened Kabalas Shabbos in our shul every week because it was nearby and they didn’t want to make the 20 minute walk to their “regular” shul. Since we weren’t the Shabbos morning shul, they felt no obligation to contribute any amount to the shul’s upkeep.

The largest expense our shul has is payroll ( Rabbi, office secretary, caretaker, youth director ) and related expenses ( health insurance etc ) . $400 per family could not cover our non payroll costs as well as pay our Rav a living wage without having to work a second job. Our dues are $1200 which includes seats for Rosh Hashana

in reply to: Annual dues in shuls #1058791

Charging for seats started on the lower east side during the high tire of immigration. Many people had stopped being religious but would come for the Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. They wouldn’t pay membership so selling seats was the major fundraising.

    somehow a phrase was misplaced

woefully unprepared when faced with the realities of work, unpaid bills, and an endless and exhausting day. Kolel life can be very rewarding but seminaries should prepare their students to deal with the hard and difficult parts as well

Oomis, it saddens me when I hear middle class girls come back from a year of seminary in Israel brainwashed into believing the ideal marriage is to live in poverty supporting a learning husband. Only someone who has never experienced poverty would willingly embrace it. The reason I said brainwashed is that, for the most part, the seminaries present only an extremely rosy scenario which then leaves the women woefully unprepared when faced with the realities of work, life can be very rewarding but seminaries should prepare their students to deal with the hard and difficult parts as well

Yayim. Hurricanes are tracked from the time they form out in the Atlantic. Since they rarely move faster than 30 miles per hour ( I’m not talking about wind speed of the hurricane ) there is ample time to prepare and evacuate. Prior to hurricane Sandy the MTA, for example, had time to move all of their trains to high by round. We were given orders to evacuate many hours before the storm struck

Yayin, unfortunately adults cannot be trusted to use good judgement. In previous bad snowstorms numerous cars were stranded on highways. This had several bad outcomes: drivers/passenger lives were at risk, rescue workers were forced to put their lives at risk and, by blocking roads and impeding snowplows, made the job of sno clearance that much harder.

In addition, you do know that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority ( which operates the subways, busses, Long Island railroad and Metro north Railroad ) is controlled by Gov Cuomo and the MTA chairman, not Di Blasio. They made the decision to shut them down.

I’m no fan of Di Blasio and there enough issues to legitimately criticize him for without making up new ones.

Lior, once again, you are woefully wrong and paranoid. Meteorology is not an exact science. All the preparations were made based upon the best information available, as they cannot wait until the last second to take emergency steps and get word out to the public. As it happened, sometime last night the storm track suddenly shifted 50 miles eastward. As a result, New Jersey and the Hudson Valley got less than 6 inches, NYC up to 12 inches and Suffolk County already has 20 inches on the ground and, as of this writing, blizzard conditions still prevail and snow is still coming down 2 inches per hour.

Would you rather have had the storm kept on the original track? Be thankful to Hashem that you don’t live in Suffolk.

My concern with the OP is that he talks about growing up fearing his parents. If that pattern carried over to the relationship to the OP’s children, it’s hard to respect a parent whose actions caused you to fear them.

I’ve never understood the issue regarding age and why it is such a big secret. It’s a fact of life and nothing to ashamed of. If you are looking to get married, your prospective spouse is going to have to be told eventually anyway.

I never said that married dysfunctional parents were the only alternative and I do understand the topic. The reason for bringing up the married dysfunctional couple could be a greater problem than the divorced couple. As DY correctly pointed out, the divorce is out there on the open for all to investigate while not so with a married couple. How many times have you heard, when told of a divorce, that people thought they were s perfect couple. In addition, people are very telunvtant to ruin a shidduch by answering a question honestly
