Golfer, with all due respect, by making an unequivocal statement that learning protects us ( and with no exceptions ) you are the one making cheshbonos. It I’d not kefira to point out , not just the Holocaust, but all the massacres and pogroms over the last thousand years. You’re right in that we don’t know what was prevented, but please don’t say Torah study is a blanket protection when it obviously hasn’t been

Akuperma, the Polish army still used horse cavalry and their outdated weapons and air force were no match for the Nazis modern army, tanks and planes. France poured their resources into the Maginot line, not their army. The Nazis simply enter thru Belgium

    Akuperma,

    1. The Egyptians had tanks and an air force

    2. The Arab Legion was well tra

    3. The Israelis had no tanks and very little artillery

    4. The Israelis were great outnumbered

    5. The Israelis had only a handful of old WWII era planes

In other words, despite your claims, it was a miracle that they prevailed. Also, Britain was bankrupt and wanted no part of th expense of policing Palestine

What they need is off street parking garages. When the Eitz Chaim Yeshiva building was torn down, there was talk of putting in a municipal parking lot. Instead, it was replaced with another strip of stores. There is no place to put in a lot now, so I don’t think there is a solution

Joseph, that’s because Borough Park has been so overbuilt in the last 40 years. If you look at old pictures from the 40’s and 50’s, 49 street between 13th and 14th ave was lined with big one family homes with porches and driveways. They’ve all been replaced by apartment houses and multifamily attached houses. That’s been the history of many of the side streets. A lot more people, same curb space

I have a different scenario of abuse. Last summer, I was shopping at Brach’s supermarket in the Five Towns. For those not familiar, it has a large parking lot, a five foot wide no parking zone clearly marked by painted yellow lines, and curb cuts at each end of the sidewalk to use for carts.

I had finished shopping, left the store only to find a frum women parking her minivan curbside and blocking the curb cut. I asked her to move the van as I would have to walk 300′ to the other cut. She said no,even though there were 30 empty spots in the lot. I would have gone on my way not I saw an infant in a car seat still in the car. I told the woman it was dangerous to leave the child in a locked car when the outside temperature was 83. She said she would only be inside for 15-20 minutes. I replied I would call 911 to report child abuse, as the health of the child was in danger. She took out the baby when I started to call.

What would you have done? Do you think this would have been mesira?

In Rav Moshe’s time, stoves had pilot lights that were on all the time. So, when you “turned on” a burner, all you were doing was drawing an existing flame into the jet, not creating a new fire.

The fines should be $1,000 for all the people who routinely double park on 13 avenue ( Boro Park ), Coney island Ave ( Midwood ) and Central ave ( Five Towns ). These inconsiderate people block parked cars from leaving and force drivers to weave back and forth to get around them ( while also trying to avoid jaywalking pedestrian )

People keep citing the position of Reb Elchonon Wasserman as their ultimate anti-zionist sourc but even his contemporaries saw his positions as extreme. The ultimate irony was that his grandson, also Elchonon Wasserman, graduated from the Yeshiva of iFlatbush high school, a coed pro-zionist school.

This is a rediculous thread. A don’t pasken from this kind of story. Reminds of the story where Rav Moshe picked up one carton of Chalav Yisroel, put it down, and picked up and used a carton of a different brand of CY. The observer assumed there was a kashrus issue so he asked Rav Moshe why he put down the first container. Because it was empty, Rav Moshe responded

Perhaps I’m mistaken, but the rise of antisemitism caused Zionism, not the other way around. Herzl had believed assimilation was the answer, but the virulent rise of European antisemitism caused him to change his mind and decide that separation was the answer.

The Crusader massacres, Spanish persecution and expulsion, pogroms, the massacre at York ( need I go on? ) all took place long before Zionism

Nisht, insulting me is not an answer. My issue is not with kitniyos,as I hold the minhwg and am not looking to change. My issue was why people hold minhagim cannot change when in fact they do. Ashkenazi or Sephardic women adopt their husband’s minhagim. In Europe’s shtetls newcomers adopted local minhagim. I’ve heard the Ari zl justification, but that’s all it is, a good justification. If you learn Soocos, the Gemorrsh mentions several minhagim that we no longer practice. It happens and doesn’t diminish Yiddishkeit

I’ve mentioned this before but no one has ever responded. If minhagim cannot change, how were the chassidim able to throw away centuries of minhagim? They discarded the nusach and adopted a new one.

As long as we’re talking about davening for the amud; I was davening in a new shul and was asked by the gabbai to daven. I declined, as I don’t have a good voice and cannot project. He thought I was being modest. This went back and forth for several weeks, ending each time with him claiming I was being modest. I finally agreed to daven one shabbos, after which the gabbai said you’re right, you weren’t being modest!!

Newbee so based an anonymous rov who has “heard” stuff you are making sweeping generalizations. My experiences at hotels were wonderful but I stopped because it became too expensive. Akuperma, the Zionists you keep talking about are long gone. It seems your purpose is to invent bigotry and slights to justify chareidi behavior. In addition, to compare chareidim to Jim Crow is reprehensible and insulting to the Americans who were subject to its laws. Blacks had no choice, they couldn’t change their color. Chareidim can use any water fountain, any rest room, sit at any lunch counter and vote. On buses, they enforce im Crow in women by making them sit in the back. When was the last time a chareidi was lynched by a Zionist mob?

The stones in the Kosel are Herodian stones. The Kpsel eas not part of the Bais Hamikdosh, just part of the exterioir retaing wall.

People are somewhat spoiled by the current Plaza. The Wall was never treated with respect by the Muslims and was always used as a building wall for other structures. If you see pictures of the Wall pre-1967, it’s rather unimpressive; a small exposure on a narrow street filled with Arab housing. Jews get to the site of the Bais Hamikdash

By the way, if you take the Tunnel tour, the still unexposed portion continues down to where the corner fortress was, and you walk on actual Herodian street that paralled the Wall.

Many newcomers to Brooklyn don’t realize how far frum communities have already expanded. In the early 1950’s my in laws were living in a basement apartment in Borough Park and expecting a second child. Not finding anything in BP, they moved to the wilds of Midwood, Avenue M and East 13 street. There was only ONE Kosher restaurant. When I bought my first Brooklyn house in the late 1970’s I couldn’t afford to buy where my in-laws lived and so we bought on the frontier, East 21 and Avenue N. We were the second frum family on the block.

Deerfield Beach has grown to nearly 1,000 families, and next door to Boca Raton. Because they are very large communities, the percentage growth in the Five Towns, Far Rockaway, Teaneck or West Hempstead might be smaller than Lakewood, but not the gross numbers
