Bottom line is that kitniyos is not Chametz. If someone wants to equate joy of Pesach with how much new kitniyos they can deny themselves, be my guest. I don’t understand it.

Who is paying for the door to door service? A couple of years ago I saw a school bus on 14_Ave in BP stop his his bus on a diagonal, blocking traffic both way. I was told it was done because drivers ignored the bus’s flashing lights and stop signs and around the buses. Thus we the only way to prevent it

AY, why wouldyou expect a. Haraidi to accept the peak of an RZ Rabbi? Similarly, you act surprised that a non charaidi Jew doesn’t accept charaidi Daas Torah.

As an aside, Rav Wasserman’s grandchildren , including the boy named for him, attended Zionist yeshivas in Brooklyn.

When it comes to Medicaid, Section 8 benefits, school and, school bussing etc, we’re there wildly pointing to ourselves screaming ” I’m an American’ “. However, when it comes to a purely American, secular holiday like Thanksgiving, we go through contortion z to prove it’s a religious holiday.

The Pilgrim story is a myth. The first official Thanksgiving celebrated by the United States under the Constitution, was declared by the first Congress, meeting in lower Manhattan. Roger Sherman of Connecticut wanted to declare a national day of Thanksgiving to thank G-d for providing a new government under the Constitution Southern Congressman objected, as they felt this was an act of Kings and they had just thrown off the rule of a king. Sherman responded that he wasn’t emulating European royalty but instead, King Solomon. Just as Solomon thanked G-d at the dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem, they should thank G-d for the Constitution. The Southerners replied that they could emulate Solomon and voted for the resolution.

So, not only did Judaism play a deciding role, the Rabbi of the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue was an invited speaker. To commemorate this, since the 1780’s the shul has said special tfillos every Thanksgiving since.

DY, the major issue that 5 Town’s ran into was they quickly lost the non-kosher customers. Also because of higher costs related to kashrus and losing one days business, they didn’t honor coupons or promotions advertised in print or on TV.

    The novelty wore off

By the way, can everyone in the CR dispense with the anti-hotel rants? Hotels are not for everybody, both from an hashkafic and cost perspective, and that’s fine. Just please don’t rain on someone else’s simcha because it’s not your way.

Mk5,I’ve heard elsewhere the reason you gave for extending Shabbos. It sound great until you give it some thought. Does it extend, as DY asked, from the first minute anywhere in the world to the last? Or does it apply just to those souls in your time zone?

You’re the one who brought it up. If it’s the first scenario, your extension of Shabbos only helps if you live in the last time zone that experiences Shabbos.

DY, what you apparently missed was that Rubashkin fabricated invoices to fool the bank into thinking his company did enough business could support the loan. That is not a technicality. Without that it would have simply been a bad business loan by the bank.

A somewhat similar case happened almost 30 years ago. A computer leasing company used fabricated lease agreements to convince banks to lend them millions. The principals served extensive time in Federal white collar prisons.

Someone in my town was sentenced last year to twenty years in Federal prison for his part in the theft of millions of dollars from New York City ( his share was $3 million ; a relative of his got a reduced sentence for providing documentation of the fraud and testifying against the others). He asked the judge to be assigned to Fort Dix Federal camp since it has enough frum prisonmers that there are shiurim, daf yomi and both Sfard and Askenazi minyanim. He’s MO. Not every frum convict is a victim of anti-semitism It’s a sad commentary.

Nisht, Rubashkin WAS convicted for defrauding the bank, so I don’t understand your question as to why the bank didn’t press charges.there was no question that his company hired illegal immigrants , some of whom were underage. However to get a conviction, the government had to prove that Rubashkin knew it and so the charge was dismissed since they had the bank fraud conviction.

Our shul has a server that can’t be more than two feet tall. The father of one our members was a Rabbi and a US Army chaplain in the South Pacific during WW 2. Unlike in Europe, where a sefer could be transported in a Jeep, he had to be able to carry a sefer himself from island to island. So, the Army arranged for a Sofer to write a server to his specifications.

nishtdayngesheft, the Chafetz Chaim was born in 1839 and married in 1857. So, it is very likely that his granddaughters grew up well before the Bais Yaacov movement began educating frum girls. In some ways the rate of assimilation prior to Bais Yaacov among frum girls waa worse than today. There were many alien harmful hashkofos in Eastern Europe then and girls typically received no education to combat them

When the combinedbVaad came into being, the Far Rockaway side tried to use the Vaad as a religious tool by disqualifying stores whose owners personal ,at home, tznius and/or hashkofos did not meet their standards. People in other areas do try to infer connection to five Towns, but they have to abut the five Towns. 25 years ago when Far Rockaway was just starting to come back from the abyss, real estate agents marketed the part of Far Rockaway next to Lawrence as ” West Lawrence ” to avoid any association with Far Rockaway. Today, young couples moving into the section of Valley Stream next to Woodmere “North Woodmere”

Zdhavasdad, the five Towns ( Lawrence, Cedarhhrdt,Woodmere, Hewlett and Inwood ARE a place. Cedarhurst has the primary business district with most of the kosher restaurants and older, smaller housing, Woodmere ,Hewlett and Lawrence are residential and expensive ( Back Lawrence and Woodsburgh very expensive ) and have high % of frum Jewish population. Inwood traditionally had little Jews Jewish population but in recent years couples seeking affordable prices have been buying in Inwood.

Far Rockaway is in Queens County and is much more yeshivish . the five Towns ( Nassau County ) has a growing and significant yeshivish population but also has a large MO population. The YI of Woodmere has over 1200 families
