My chevrusa’s yeshiva is now up to date. They had a matching fundraiser similar to Darcheis Simcha fundraiser. One of the conditions was that the yeshiva had to seriously evaluate how they got into the mess and make specific meaningful changes in their operations

Abba, this is not a civil rights issue. It’s accommodating a religious practice at others expense. What past historical discrimination is being addressed?

Akuperma, the low salaries paid rebbes is made worse by the fact they have to teach many more days and hours that public school teachers, even if they are paid on time. The yeshiva where my chavrusa teaches recently went four months without a paycheck.

Akuperma, you ignored my point. Yeshivas do not, you claim, spend double what the goyim spend. You denigrate all public schools while asserting that all yeshivas provide quality secular and religious education . Sadly, we know the latter is not the case.

Akuperma, how did you determine that yeshivas spend twice what the goyim do? My district spends approximately $24,000 per child and provides far more in services. It covers maintenance of seven school buildings and a lighted athletic complex for the football team ( includes baseball, tennis and an all-weather running track ). The teachers are paid better and have much better fringe benefits. A full range of academic courses , lab ,arts, athletic teams, and clubs are offered .

Every Succos we are entertained by the high school band. They also provide free transportation to any school within 20 miles of the district.

The modern yeshivas charge more than $24000 and provide less and right wing yeshivas charge s lot less but generally don’t pay the rebbe’s a living wage, let alone benefits

Rebuild, homeopathic simply meansthat we don’t know how it works. American Indians used certain types of tree moss to fight infections without knowing how or why it worked. It had mold that acted like penicillin.

English is a Germanic language that, unlike say French which has traditionally tried to keep out foreign words, has always accepted words from all languages. The big French infusion came with the Norman Conquest. The elite spoke French while the commoners spoke English. The source of a number of our curse words stemmed from the fact thT the ruling Normans considered the Anglo-Saxon descriptives to be crude in comparison to French and over time the words evolved into vulgarities

    Shtusim, noone is questioning Darchei.

As far as alternatives or additions to simcha fundraising, I would suggest the following,:

    1. Low cost term life insurance for the rebbaim and their wives. Why the wives? A small policy to cover funeral expenses and child care.

    2.Good health insurance .

Paying for a wedding is not tax deductible. Simply using a yeshiva as a go between doesn’t kasher It. A local family was incurring huge Legal bills in a child custody issue, and asked people who wanted to help defray the cost to make the checks payable to a fund the shul set up for the purpose. The shul was informed that simply making the payments thru the shul did not make them deductible and closed the fund.

The Darchei fund is on the up and up. All I’m saying is that the donation might not be deductible. People deduct the full cost of Darcheis dinner, it doesn’t mean Darchei did anything wrong

MAJOR CORRECTION: My parents were NOT bad people. They never hit me and treated me and my siblings well, except when it came to yeshiva. My older sibling was molested in yeshiva and nobody believed her. She , as a result, went OTD

I defiabuse as what went on in my yeshiva ketana. Rebbe’s would punch, slap and even kick us if they thought we weren’t paying attention. When the yeshiva would periodically fall months behind on salaries, the rebbe’s took their frustration out on us. This was in the late 1950’s. It did not engender a love of learning. There was also emotional abuse. Example:when I was nine , I went to my Rebbe after davening to say that I had concentrated real hard for half of the davening. His chizuk? He called me to the front of the class and ridiculed for davening hard for only half.

Somehow I did not go OTD, but I came close a few times until adulthood when other factors put yiddjzhkeit in a more favorable light. Many of my friends did go OTD. Contrary to some posters, sometimes it is the educators and parents ( who knew about the beatings but assumed them to be justified ) and not the kids unhappiness or emotional instability. My parents were not bad people, they just assumed this was how it was supposed to be in yeshiva

The yeshiva high school I went to didn’t use physicL abuse but ridiculed and shamed students if they didn’t like the questions that were asked

DY, it’s not shared. We vote on our district budget annually , with the star imposed 2% cap on property ta es

The law says that to qualify for free busing you have to live at least two miles ( up until high school ) or three miles for high school. So, the three million dollars does not have to go to busing as any less than 2 of 3 miles is not mandated. The three million was intended to restore phyd Ed and art

In a,letter to his wife, he noted to his surprise that , during a service ( mincha ) held prior, a group of men were discussing business all during the service

Everyone seems to have ignored or misrepresented my position. What the ruling was that it was muttarvto eat kitniyos in Israel if : a. It was contained in a processed product. B. The kitniyos was indistinguishable C. The product had a valid kosher for Pesach hashgacha. There is no chsash of mixing with chametz

All the issues raised by the Mishna Brura are negated by these requirements. Nisht, if you feel that this represents wild eyed, lefty kulos, well, that is your problem

BTW, S per Rabbi Blumenkrantz Pesach sefer, gebrocht does not appear anywhere before the Achronim, so it’s not an ancient minhag

In Israel it is difficult for American olim as many KP products contain kitniyos.

One of the solutions proposed by some poskim is logical, The whole issue surrounding kitniyos arose because of life in agrarian Europe hundreds of years ago. It was difficult to distinguish raw chometz from kitniyos and the fear was chometz might have gotten mixed in.

With todays processed foods, that have valid KP hashgas, that concern no longer applies. Often, the only way you know that kitniyos is in the processed product is by the label. They have said that these types of processed kitniyos can be eaten by olim. It’s logical and makes sense

Now, are we talking about halacha and minhag as per : Charaidi? Modern Orthodox? Yeshivish? Sfard? Yemini? Religious Zionist? I think peace between Israel and the Arabs would be easier
