lesschumrasParticipanttechnically it’s PaleoHebrew and it actually coexisted in a limited role until Bar Cochba. Hasmonean and Bar Cochba coins have inscriptions in PaleoHebrew .
lesschumrasParticipantAramaic is holy. The Torah is written using Aramaic letyers. The original Hebrew/Lashon Kadosh was written uding proto-Hebrew letters. When Ezra came back , aming the revisions he instituted ( i.e. laining on Monday and Thursday ) was switching to Aramaic block letters.
lesschumrasParticipantexcuse me, but what makes those comments comments anti-Semitic? KJ is the poorest village in the country. Jewish media runs stories all the time of rabbonim and rosh yeshivas railing against the effects of the internet on Yiddishkeit.
June 9, 2018 10:39 pm at 10:39 pm in reply to: Something’s are too controversial for the frum media to address #1536316lesschumrasParticipantwell, child molestation was swept under the rug for decades. Serious action was taken until it was addressed publicly. And I’m not just talking about sexual molestation . The same rebbe who was punching, slapping and kicking 7 yr olds 25 years ago in my great nephew’s class, was doing it to 7 yr olds 40 years ago in my son in laws class ( same yeshiva and rosh yeshiva). It stopped only when my niece threatened to swear out a criminal complaint against the renbe for child abuse and assault and to file a civil lawsuit against both the yeshiva and the rosh yeshiva.

Isn’t that a case of the pot calling the kettle black? We orthodox rip each other in this coffee room and we all rip the non-orthodox . So, doed that make us equally guilty of making hateful statements?
May 16, 2018 7:48 pm at 7:48 pm in reply to: Chashuve Rabbonim participating in Public Events with Goiyeshe Prayers #1521854lesschumrasParticipantGH, at times your naivety and hatred of Trump leads you to wrong conclusions. Virtually all Christians believe that heaven is only open to Christians. The evangelicals just happen to be more honest and vocal about it. The evangelicals just happen to be among Israel’s biggest supporters.
You seem to object to Trump playing to his right wing base. What’s your issue? the left wing is generally anti Israel, so why should he cater to them?lesschumrasParticipantThere are many misconceptions about siddurim and and how we davened prior to the 16th century. There could not have been too many siddurim around before the printing press was invented in the 15th century. They had to be hand copied, making them expensive and subject to errors. The Rhineland/Ashkenazi communities were small, but I can’t imagine every mispallel could afford his own siddur.
in addition, unlike today, tefillos were constantly being added. The Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur piyuttim were composed mainly between 700 and 1200. Kol Nidre was composed as late as the 1100s or as early as the 700s. Kabbalas Shabbos was added about 500 years ago.lesschumrasParticipantI think Artscrolls success was attributable to its clear, readable text. The most common, and irritating feature, of most other publishers was the arbitrary reduction of the font size of some tefillos to barely readable while others were overly large. It gave the impression that the small font kapitlach was less important. They also tried to satisfy different needs ( I.e. Hebrew/English, Hebrew only, interlinear)
May 15, 2018 11:35 am at 11:35 am in reply to: Stop Eurovision song contest next year in Yerushalayim #1520854lesschumrasParticipantIt seems to me that the chareidi community tries to have it both ways.
Generally, they oppose the legitimacy of the State and don’t observe or recognize any celebration or observance created by the State. They probably didn’t observe Yom Yerushalayim which is ironic. Without Israel, they would have access to the Kotel, and they certainly wouldn’t have anything near the size of the current chareidi population living in Jerusalem or municipal government responsive to their needs. Yet, they still expect the State to cater to their needs and desires and not the chilonim.lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, you meant a large portion of kollel and chassidishe ( i.e. KJ, New Square ) families, not all frum families.
lesschumrasParticipantmost doctors starting out have big medical school bills to pay off.
waiving a copay is not insurance fraud. besides, billing for a copay, but not pursuing debtors , is not illegal.
Because Medicaid patients don’t have copays ( well, there is an $3 Outpatient copay ) they tend to make appts for minor ailments ( ie 100 degree temp ) that other patients won’t. As a result they can crowd out patients with better paying insurance.lesschumrasParticipantJoseph and Uncle Ben
You won’t find a Yid in Italy, or the Sfard lands.
That’s your Eastern European bias showing through.
A Jew born, raised and living in Rome is a Jew and a Roman, despite your opinion.
The reason why so many Italian Jews survived WW2 is because Italian Catholics considered Italian Jews to be fellow Italians who happened to be Jewish. That’s why Italians went out their way to protect them. Out of a prewar population of 46,000 only 10000 were deported, and thst happened after 1943 when the Germans took over.lesschumrasParticipantwhy should i care about what yentas talk about?
lesschumrasParticipantdas yachid, and what is your “impression” based on?
My impression is that my wife makes matza brei, kneidlach and other gebrochts dishes from shmurah matzah.lesschumrasParticipantmentch1, you are free and entitled to define and spend Pesach as you wish, within Halacha, as does everybody else.
lesschumrasParticipantmentsch: your point being you’re the arbiter of where people spend yom tov? So, a child is failing on hashkafa if they travel to Florida from NY to spend Pesach at their parents home?
lesschumrasParticipantmentsh1,you mean they don’t comply with your hashkafa.
lesschumrasParticipantAvi K. , your facts about the movie producer ( a Jewish Holocaust survivor ) are slightly off. Unlike R. Carlebach, he confessed, was convicted, jumped bail and fled to Europe. He has not been shunned. He has continued to work, received honors and was perceived by his industry peers has being persecuted. Do 40 years Europe has refused to extradite him
lesschumrasParticipantwould it be an issue if it’s not your legal name?

If the parents were truly enrich people, it should have been taken care of already

April 15, 2018 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm in reply to: Will learning Mussar help a psychopath or Narcissist? Among others. #1506660lesschumrasParticipantHealth, I’m not clear on what you mean. Unlike , say, depression and paranoia, a psychopath is basically untreatable with drugs or therapy. A psychopath lacks empathy or a conscience. Drugs can’t do anything about it. Mussar means nothing to such a person.
April 10, 2018 8:48 am at 8:48 am in reply to: What Happened With Ezras Nashim In Boro Park On Monday Night? #1504535lesschumrasParticipantjust a few points,
A. not all paid EMT’s spend off time eating donuts
B. not all Hazolah members are selfless
C. there was a major accident the other night in
Nassau County where a charter bus with 38 students
and 5 adults slammed into an overpass which
sheared off the entire roof. Nassau EMTs and local
volunteer units responded so quickly that within 30
minutes all the injured had been triaged and on their
way via ambulance to hospitals
D. the speed of the ambulance and use of
the siren are not indicative of how caring
The EMTs are, at least in Nassau.
years ago I passed out in shul.and the Nassau
EMTs came immediately. During transport I asked
why no siren and why they were. observing speed limits and traffic laws. They said that when its
determined, as in my case, that the patient was
not in danger, they can’t use the siren or ignore
traffic laws as that would create needless accidentslesschumrasParticipantforget about public events. Every Shabbos between Mincha and Maariv, bochurs in my shul bring food from the shalos seudos to the Beis Medrash to eat while they learn. How do I know? When I come in Sunday morning for minyan, the sforim are not put away, and there are dirty plates and cups in the tables and the floor, as well as food on the floor.
lesschumrasParticipantactually, renting villas in Florida is a cheaper alternative to hotels for large families, particularly near Orlando.
I don’t know about Miami, but many homes were built in Orlando on spec that never sold, and are now used as short term rentals.lesschumrasParticipantSince when do we pasken according to kabbala?
Interleaving is assur? Hide your thumbs? Is my rabbits foot assur?
Goyim breathe when they pray so I guess we have daven holding our breath.lesschumrasParticipantTrump did not fire McCabe. He was fired by Sessions at the recommendation of the FBI Inspector General ( an On a appointee ) after an extensive DOJ inspection.
lesschumrasParticipantI think this qualifies as a minhag shtus
lesschumrasParticipantI’ll try one more time. I’m not questioning kitniyos that is sold loose and grows near chametz.
What noone has answered is:
1. Kitniyos contained in a box of processed food that has reliable hashgacha that it contains no chametz. Why is that assur
2. Are peanuts , beans or mustard seeds ground into flour or grown near chametz? If not, why are they kitniyos?lesschumrasParticipantDY, Joseph, it’s amazing that you can say , with a straight face, that even though the reason is gone, we’re halachicly obliged to follow senseless minhagim. So, Rav Akiva Eger held that smoking is good for your health. How ,then, can more recent poskim hold that it’s assur? Ah, you’ll tell me that we know more now, circumstances changed. Rabbonim allow chalav stam in the US , despite a long established minhag/Halacha because circumstances in the US were different.
lesschumrasParticipantLaskern, fine, but
A. When was the last time you saw peanuts, mustard and beans ground into flour.
B. Curcumstances surrounding kitniyos have changed. As I stated above, why shouldn’t an Ashkenazi Jew be able to eat kitniyos if it is an ingredient in a processed food certified not to contain chametz? Kitniyos are not chametz.lesschumrasParticipantNeville, i don’t disagree about rice. But, if a processed , boxed , product has a valid recognized Pesach Israeli hashgacha and happens to contain corn, why wouldn’t an Ashkenazi be able to eat it as there is no concern that it might be mixed with chametz?
lesschumrasParticipantGeordie, my apologies. I meant Joe
lesschumrasParticipantGeordie613, you justify non gebrochts based upon circumstances having been changed. Well, what about kitniyos? The circumstances that lead to kitniyos are largely no longer applicable. So, under your rationale, we should be able to eat most kitniyos today.
lesschumrasParticipantLaskern,
You’re joking, right?lesschumrasParticipantI often wonder how people can mock the practices of other religions yet defend the absolute adherence to mimhagim even after the original reason is gone. Just because we used to do something ( that was not halachic ) is not a valid reason to keep doing it
lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, my comprehension is fine. You said Rav Kaminetsky didn’t eat gebroks. Period. Anyone who didn’t know the actual reason would naturally think it was because he was against gebroks itself. That’s why what you did was misleading at best and deceitful at worst
lesschumrasParticipantNeville, this was Wolf’s point. Rav Kaminetzky stopped eating gebroks because he was looking to turn down a meal invitation without embarrassing the host. It had nothing to do with wetting the matzah. Stating that Rav Kaminetzky didn’t eat gebroks, without giving the reason, Joseph was deceptively implying it was because of issues he had with gebroks
March 13, 2018 3:14 pm at 3:14 pm in reply to: MAILBAG: Reader Upset With YWN Story About Hillary Clinton Falling #1488294lesschumrasParticipantActually, the falling is not the bedt part of the story. When asked by her Indian host as to why 52 % of white women voted for Trump, she said they were forced by their husbands. She said that’s why she lost.
She is still blaming everyone but herself.lesschumrasParticipantMy greatgrandparents in the Alte Heim had extreme poverty, pogroms and very small living quarters to clean. So, please don’t romanticize their life and Pesach.
They also didn’t have refrigerators, which makes Pesach easier so make sure you turn yours off for Pesach.
lesschumrasParticipantEating gebroks is NOT a custom, it’s the halacha. Non-gebroks is the minhag, and it’s relatively new. Its a Chassishe minhag, apparently started by Dov Ber of Mezrevitch around 1800.
Can anyone prove that today’s razor thin matzos have kernels of unbakec flour that can rise? Has anyome seem a proven case ( not an anecdote they heard fro somebody who heard from somenody?)lesschumrasParticipantAdocs, the conversions did not all takr place in 1492. As more of Spain was retaken by thr Spanish in the 1300s, Jewish persecutions became more frequent. The culminated in violent attacks in 1391 which resulted in over 100,000 forced conversions. In the 1400s Spain enacted economic restrictions on Jews to enable the Catholics to compete. This resulted in the first large scale VOLUNTARY conversion as Jews converted to escape the restrictions.
lesschumrasParticipantJoseph, do you have any source that says that jewish youth who went OTD and joined the various isms came from well off families? I mean other than it suits your agenda
