February 1, 2011 7:12 pm at 7:12 pm in reply to: Are you going to watch/listen to the superbowl? #735620LBKParticipantwill probably watch part, depending on how early kids go to sleep, and if I can get out of house then or not. May buy into a “super bowl box pool” too, but won’t mention it in the Coffee Room, because I may be accused of having a gambling problem….
LBKParticipantMy son and all of his friends loved Camp Rayim this summer!!
LBKParticipantyears ago, a relative of mine whose mother’s name had been Fradel went to R’ Shlomo Zalman Aurbach zatzal and asked if he had to name Fradel for his mother, or can he do a variation that would still be in his mother’s name. R’ Shlomo Zalman told him Gila, Rina, Chedva, Ahavah etc. (specifically listing a whole bunch of thos names) would all be good names to give in his mother’s name. I can’t imagine there’s a difference between a name like Rina or Gila, and a name like Shira (though oddly enough, every story about R’ Chaim above is specifically about the name Shira). R’ Shlomo Zalman approved the name Rina for that girl, and other siblings later named their daughters or granddaughters Rina, Gila and Aliza based on what R’ Shlomo Zalman z”l told the first sibling.

LBKParticipantProbably a better overall conversation once the Super Bowl is long over. Gambling this time of year tends to spike, but just doing it around significant sporting events doesn’t make it a “problem” even if it is frowned upon…

LBKParticipantYou can get refurbished Ipods through the Apple website for significant discounts. They carry the same Apple warranty that new Ipods have.
LBKParticipantSprint always has great deals. If you work for a company that has AT&T corporate discounts, then you can a great deal through them as well (usually 20-24%).

Amichai – there are no halochos of aveilus for a grandchild. The halocho is Kibud av v’em, that when a parent is sitting shiva, a child keeps certain halochos of aveilus until the first motzei shabbos (hot showers, music etc.). These halochos are regardless of whether the parent is sitting shiva for his/her own parent, or if the parent is sitting for another relative (spouse, sibling etc.)
LBKParticipantR’ Chaim Kanievsky davens mincha every day in the Lederman shul in Bnei Brak, and R’ Shteinman davens mincha in his shul (home) at 5 Rehov Chazon Ish in Bnei Brak every day. They are both available after mincha, if you are willing to wait on line.
LBKParticipantIn this day and age, nobody can argue that it is okay to smoke. When I was in yeshiva in E”Y, one yeshiva was half American and half Israeli. The American contingent put a petition together trying to ban smoking in the yeshiva building. They got over a hundred signatures, and brought the petition to the rosh yeshiva, who refused to enact the ban because one of the magidei shiurim was a heavy smoker and smoked in the building regularly. Unfortunately, the magid shiur died a couple of years later from lung cancer – before the age of 45!!

December 16, 2010 10:09 pm at 10:09 pm in reply to: Inappropriate Opposite Gender Interactions in the Workplace #1075601LBKParticipantA place that is generally run by frum people may be different, but in most of corporate America, EVERYONE calls everyone else by their first names. In my firm that has 10,000 people nationwide, there is noone, from secretaries or phone operators and up who call the managing partner or anyone in between, by a title. Calling someone by their first name is no longer necessarily a sense of closeness, rather it is something that everyone does, regardless of whether you know the person or not.
LBKParticipantMaybe a stupid question, but if R’ Moshe held that a Ben Torah shouldn’t make any simchos on thanksgiving, because of the appearance, then why is the Agudah Convention on thanksgiving every year? Isn’t there at least an appearance to some that this is a celebration of thanksgiving?
LBKParticipantThe questions is, who gives a 22 year-old schnuck the right to decide that his shver or parents should be moser nefesh because he feels he deserves to be in kollel?!?! I know someone living in Lakewood and learning in BMG who drives new model car, has a nice big house (with a pool), and whose kids are always dressed to kill. His wife does work, but both sets of parents are middle-class. They live better than any of the working siblings off of the monthly checks that come from the parents. Moser nefesh?!?!? I don’t think so…. For far too many people, it’s just easier than going to work and supporting yourself…
LBKParticipantType 2 is considered hereditary, and while Type 1 is not considered hereditary, there are genetic factors that make some people more pre-disposed to Type 1 diabetes than others (e.g. body weight). People with Type 2 diabetes tend to be overweight, while people with untreated Type 1 diabetes tend to be underweight. Many other differences, but many similarities as well.

LBKParticipantIn general, accountants whose main seasons are standard tax seasons are probably expected to bill 1400-1500 hours a year, with 800-1000 coming between January and April. They can be averaging 70-80 hours a week during busy season, but the rest of the year of the year, there is plenty of non-billable time to keep busy with as well (training, conferences, miscellaneous administrative projects etc.)
LBKParticipantwhoa, wellinformedyid!!! gotta take a step back and chill for a sec…..
LBKParticipantIt really depends on the financial state of the parents AND the girl.
If the parents are well-off, and the girl is just starting out making minimum wage, the parents should continue to help out, and allow the girl to put money away for the future.
If the parents are essentially middle-class, they probably should still cover the basics, but any extras should come out of the girl’s pocket, although if the parents insisted on her paying her way, there wouldn’t be anything wrong with it.
If the parents struggle financially, the girl should certainly contribute, regardless of how much or how little she makes.
LBKParticipantIt’s not a matter of “chasing the almighty dollar”. It’s called putting bread on the table, which is not exactly an easy feat these days.
As far as being an accountant goes, it’s not necessarily January through April anymore, as it all depends on what industry you work in and whether you do tax, audit or consulting. Some auditors can be busy all summer on 401(k) plan and healthcare audits. Tax people can be just as busy in September and October as they are in March and April.

LBKParticipantgotta love how some people spend so much time worrying about what other people are doing.
LBKParticipantoverall it’s worth it, as long as you aware what prices are elsewhere. Then you have to shop with a calculator, to be able to convert prices to standard sizes, to make sure you’re not overpaying on individual items.

LBKParticipanthttp://www.behindthename.com/name/zalman. Doesn’t give the source of Zalman as being German, although much of yiddish does come from German. You can also click on the Related Names link and see all of the names related to Shlomo or Solomon.
LBKParticipantZalman is the yiddish form of Shlomo. why is that secular?
September 7, 2010 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm in reply to: Asking Shaalos – When Should a Rov Be Available #695672LBKParticipantThere are definitely rabbonim who get flooded with calls, even from outside their kehilla/shul. It unreasonable to expect them to be available 24 hours a day to the general public. Even those rabbonim are usually more available for their own tzibur , and will also make themselves available to anyone if the question is pressing. I remember listening to a tape a few years ago (don’t remember if it was Rabbi Reisman or Rabbi Goldwasser) who was called in the middle of night for a pressing question. The rabbi said “I think you’re better off asking your rov, since he is more familiar with the overall situation” and the person answered “I don’t want to bother my rov this late at night”.
LBKParticipantA few weeks back, I was in the Woodbourne shoe store with my kids, and the sales person was measuring the foot of a kid who about 3 or 4 years old. At the end, the kid said “thank you, man, for measuring my foot”. The sales person was so impressed he told the kid’s mother, I’ve beend diong this for X number of years, and noone has ever thanked me before. He then called out to his wife and said “this boy thanked me!” and the wife said “noone ever does that!” It’a a little sad that noone show appreciation for anything, but I must say I was very impressed with the child, and the upbringing he must have….
LBKParticipantActually, funny as it may seem, it won’t respond to questions about foods that may be questionable as to what brochah to make. For example, if u text pizza, it responds “due to the complexity of this item we suggest an alternative method e.g. asking a rabbi for guidance on this matter”
LBKParticipantyou can say that about anything under the sun. driving a car, using electricity, using a phone. Darcei hagoyim has to actually be relevant to the question (e.g. can I go see a boxing match etc.).
LBKParticipantI thought that chess was originally some sort or persian or arabic game
LBKParticipantwhat’s a bishow? where does the word come from?

July 14, 2010 10:50 pm at 10:50 pm in reply to: Bungalow Colonies / Summer Vacation Problems #690192LBKParticipantI don’t necessarily agree that there is a pervasive problem in the catskills, when it comes to tznius, etc. However, in general, the rules during the summer shouldn’t be more relaxed than they are in the city during the rest of the year. I do have a question though – what is wrong with “walking for excersize” if it doesn’t involve immodest dress? I can see why girls and women playing ball in the presence of men could be problematic, but why shouldn’t women be allowed to excersize?
LBKParticipantThe overall design is appealing, however, the sections run into each other (especially the top story, which seems to be blown up and runs into the links on the right) and most of the pictures are either cut off, or are cutting something else off. There are also way too many links on the bottom half of the front page.
