If one does not desecrate their word, then ככל היצא מפיו יעשה Hashem will do everything that one says and wishes.

It is also the Chasan Sofer’s (grandson of the Chasam Sofer) yahrzeit who was niftar at 48. We say אז ימלא שחוק פינו, I heard a joke where his grandson the Matidorfer Rav, Rav Shmuel ztl’l was niftar at 89. Leasid Lavo at techiyas hamesim, they get revived at the age they were niftar. So they say the 48 year old is the grandfather of the 89 year old. We start to laugh.

The Dubner Maggid explains the double expression of Nachamu
with a mashal where a rich husband goes overseas and the wife is afraid that he might have forgotten her. He wrote her a letter. The letter itself was a proof that he did not forget her. Similarly, in galus the consolation of Hashem is our consolation that we are not being forgotten.

Hashem wants to spend time with us. The Ramban says that sefira is chal hamoad between Pesach and Shevuos. So Shevuos would also be Atzeres.

The Midrash says for Shemini Atzeres עשה לי סעודה קטנה make Me a small meal. Explains the Binah Leitim, Succos we sacrifice all the oxen against the umas haolom, for all other nations. When we have a big meal, we tend to be busy with the food but by a small meal the showing of comraderie and friendship becomes more important. Regarding the goyim, Hashem kavayachel is busy with food rather than show any love and friendship towards them but by the Jews, the sacrifice is small to be able to spend time of love with us.

The Rav Haflaah says on the pasuk הכהן אשר יהי-ה בימים ההם that we cannot question from one generation to another. Each generation is given its own gedalim according to ‘their’ needs. People should follow their own mesorah. The gedalim in 1866 of Hungary made an edict that a shul that has a see through mechitza or the bima is not in the middle, one cannot daven there even Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur and eve if one must daven without a minyan.

One will go after one’s desires. The Ramban says on קדשים תהיו says קדוש עצמך במותר לך sanctify yourself from the permitted.

The Chasam Sofer interprets the pasuk in Devarim (12,20) כי ירחיב וכו’ ואמרת אוכלה בשר,when Hashem will extend your borders as He promised and ‘you will say’ I want to eat meat. Why do you have to say? The Torah wants one to be able to control oneself by saying one wants to eat meat before eating as if one does not do that, will turn into a glutton and eat without control. This happens to be a good advice for dieting.

Maybe there is an argument in Shabbis 156 lwhether there is a mazel for Jews. We pasken that we are above the mazel as we can change it through tefila or maasim tovim, so we wish one that it should stay as it is good and not be changed.

The Midrash Shmuel explains כל מחלוקת לשם שמים סופו להתקיים all arguments for a Divine purpose will eventually stand. Who wants an argument to stand? The Beis Hilel because of their humility wanted to her the Beis Shamai’s view first to see an opposite view in order not to stumble by having tunnel vision. Thereby the Beis Shamai also became praise worthy as they helped the Beis Hillel to arrive to the truth. Leosid Lova we will pasken like the Beis Shamai as currently we don’t understand their stringent views but then we will gain a new understanding and the majority will follow them.

It says ורדפו מכם חמשה מאה ומאה מכם רבבה ירדופו, five chases a hundred and a hundred chases ten thousand. Asks Rashi it does not add up? Five to a hundred is twenty whereas a hundred to ten thousand is a hundred. Rashi answers that it is not similar when a majority perform. In English it is called synergy. More accomplish more. The whole is greater than the sum of all its parts.

There is a story where there was a grandfather, father and son. The father fed his father in a wooden plate figuring that a china plate he might break. When the grandfather passed on, the father want it to throw out. So the son said, father don’t throw it out as we need it for you. The Rav Abarbanel explains on honoring the parent, the children will follow how the father behaves towards his father. If the father honors his father, his children will honor him.

The Aim Habanim Semacha quotes the Yerushalmi Masser Sheni (5,2) mentioned by the Tosfas Yom Tov there that we must build the Beis Hamikdash before the coming of meshiach.
The problem is that Eliyahu Hanavi must come first as we don’t know how to build it.

We can demonstrate this where all the Jews are on a circle and Hashem is in the center. Through loving each other, we bring the points of the circle closer together creating a smaller and smaller circle such that eventually it will unite and be one with the center.

Torah shebaal peh, the oral law was also given at Har Sinai which was heard should be as clear the written law which is seen. The Rabbenu Bachaya gives a parable where a king wanted to be sure that his servants don’t take advantage of the rewards when commanding his son, so his said certain explanations orally. The Chasam Sofer gives another parable where a father has a goldmine which he wanted to give to his smallest child. He teaches him the act of goldmining and divides it equally but since the others did not know what to do with it, it automatically fell for the youngest child. The written law is the goldmine and the oral law the act of goldmining. This is like the Midrash Tanchuma where the Jews where given the written law and had to be forced on the oral law. The goyim never accepted the written law, so there was no reason to force them. Can also be that the Jews originally accepted the Torah with full will and then reneged by being scared from the great fire as explained by Tosfas but the goyim only questioned what the Torah contains and accepted nothing.

שלחו מתם הזהרו במנהג אבותיכפ look at the second day yom tov when currently we know the calculations and we still keep it as we are afraid that a wicked kingdom might make us forget it. דזימנן דגזרו המלכות גזירה ואתי לקלקלי. The Chasan Sofer says that to follow a minhag, a custom is so important that it can break a heavenly decree.
