TheFakeMaven, Does you name reflect your being? What do you do with the pasuk Devorim 28:63 והי’ כאשר שש ה’ אלקיך להטיב אתכם And it will be that the way Hashem rejoyces to do good for you.

TheFakeMaven, Have you ever heard the expression כדי להסביר את האוזן we don’t know what applies to Hashem. We use the expression כביכול but we speak according to our understanding as the hand, eyes and ears of Hashem. This is called צמצום minimizing Him for our understanding. We use love and hate and therefore we can say He enjoys giving. See the Rambam in his explanation.

It says אם למדת תורה הרבה אל תחזיק טובה לעצמך if you learned much Torah don’t praise yourself כי לכך נוצרת for that is why you were created. Says the Binah Leitim, don’t keep the best for yourself because that is why you were created to pass it on. I said כל הלומד תורה שלא לשמה one who learns to Torah for his own benefit, not passing it on, מוטב לו שלא נברא it would have been better if he was not born, because he is not keeping the purpose of creation. כל שרוח הבריות נוחין ממנו if people get a benefit from him because he is passing on Torah, רוח המקום נוחה הימנו Hashem gets joy from him, because he follows the purpose of the creation of the world.

Avi K, The problem is how do you explain that Hashem did not become greater by creating the world if He created it for Himself.

The world was created for our benefit and not Hashem’s. The midrash in Tehilim on the pasuk עולם חסד יבנה the world was created with favor, compares this to a king who has storerooms of all kind of goods. He says, what should I do with this? I will distribute and share this with my servants and the only thing I ask them is that they should show appreciation for it. See the Binah Leitim for more detail. Therefore, our purpose is also to share our wealth and knowledge with others to emulate Him.

When Moshe Rabbenu was in the heavens to get the Torah, as he was accosted by the malochim, Hashem made him look like Avraham, saying to them didn’t you eat by his house? The Dubner Magid has a parable where a prince becomes depressed when hearing that a minister praised himself that he is more important than the prince when the king discusses country matters, as prince is being dismissed. The doctors prescribe a cure having all ministers dress up in an animal costume and dance infront of the prince. When the turn came on this minister to dress up and dance, the prince began to laugh. The minister was told, look who is more beloved by the king? You had to embarass yourself to make the prince happy. When Avraham Avinu was depressed, the malochim had to dress up in human form to make Avraham feel good showing who is more beloved by Hashem.

StuartW, They ask the question, why Hashem tested Avraham with the Akedah even though He knew he can withstand it? The answer is that the experience made Avraham better or others can learn from it.
It says in the Hagaddah, whoever tells Yetzias Mitzraim in great detail, הרי זה משבח they traslate, becomes himself better. האמנתי כי אדבר I streghten by belief when I speak.

Reshaim are a bad influence, so the tzadik can mix with them and become like them or avoid them. It becomes like in Shir Hashirim a rose among the thorns which makes them avoid bending either way and they end up growing straight.

Trying to answer your original question that tzadikim feel jealous and embarassed of other tzadikim that is provided they did not reach the level of Moshe Rabbenu who reached his full potential. Our assignment in this world is to reach our full potential so we are jealous of other tzadikim who reached their potential. The jealousy of other tzadikim is not like getting welfare where someone did not do anything to earn his keep.

The Tiferes Yisroel at the end of Kidushin tells the story where king commisioned his painter to paint a picture of Moshe Rabbenu. He asked his advisers to interpret the picture. They said that the picture indicates that he was a murderer. The king got upset, the painter said they did not interpret it correctly and the advisers said that he did not paint it correctly. So the king decided to see by himself how he looks like. He took his anterage to see him. He was suprised to see that he looked exactly as painted. He asked him, how can you be a leader and look like this? Moshe Rabbenu told him that his job is to fight his nature. The Tzetil Katan from the Noam Elimelech that our job in this world is to fight and over come our nature.

The Chasan Sofer explains, the yetzer hora is like a salesman trying to sell fake goods like the wife of Potifar tried to convince Josef that she was for his benefit, but when she nudge him day by day, he did not listen to him because if the merchandise is really good for him, she should not need to talk so much. The yetzer tov does not talk much because he is selling good stuff and the merchandise speaks for him. So the yetzer hora must have an advantage, otherwise he will not be listened to.

There is a gemora or midrash where it was asked since people were worshipping the sun so why Hashem does not destroy it? So Hashem said I will not destroy things that is good for them. Similarly the reshaim, as mentioned above, are useful for the tzadikim.

The Rambam’s question above is a form of this question. Doesn’t Hashem’s knowledge eliminate free will? If he can do differently than He doesn’t really know what he will do? If He created reshaim than
He doesn’t really know what they will be?

The question 4,6 is the Rambam’s question in Hilchas Teshuva 5:5, where we must say that Hashem ignores his knowledge or there is no time element infront of him, everything is happening now. Why didn’t Hashem create the world from Noach on? Noach had to learn from what happened before him. Similarly, the tzadikim learn from the reshaim.

The Ramban says that Sara Imenu afflicted Hagar and therefore, when we don’t behave properly, we will be afflicted by Yishmoel, so the Baal Haturim says at the end of Chayeh Sarah, that Moshiah cannot come until he is destroyed.

I disagree that currently we can keep women locked up as the Rambam himself states that they are not prisoners. They need to take out children to the park for health reasons, and for car pools on secular holidays when buses are not available. If they leave the house, they have a good reason to do so. The men do their own jobs and they will not be affected by the women provided they dress ztuniesdig.
