mentsch1- Do you have semicha? Did we appoint you as our rav?

in reply to: Easiest recipe ever #1082645

MRS PLONY- Yes, only one teaspoon. Just enough to color the milk. That’s what the recommended serving is if I remember correctly.

in reply to: Easiest recipe ever #1082642

Since a recipe must have at least two steps (in my opinion) here’s the easiest I can think of:

    Chocolate Milk

    Ingredients:

    1 tsp. Chocolate flavored syrup

    7 fl. oz. Milk

    Directions:

Pour both ingredients in glass. Stir and enjoy!

Actually, it’s quite easy when clicking in from the “freshness” column.

in reply to: Where is my Thank You Card? #1092161

I recently got two gifts that were given to someone to give to me a long time ago, and the messenger forgot about them until she found them while pesach cleaning and delivered them. I don’t have any of these people’s phone numbers or addresses, but I’d love to say thanks. It’s a shame they didn’t include a card with their gift, I really would love to thank them.

in reply to: Getting married and no money #1087115

I was referring to a kallah watch.

in reply to: Getting married and no money #1087112

The minhag of giving a bracelet upon engagement is very old. It is certainly much older than the “minhag” of a diamond ring. The watch is unnecessary, but a bracelet should be given.

in reply to: Getting married and no money #1087104

gavra- I was referring to people who live in small apartments, not in 16 foot semi-attached homes. A small apartment simply cannot hold more than the couples immediate family and one or two friends. It is precisely the poor people that truly need the halls.

in reply to: Getting married and no money #1087100

Next thing you will tell me is that Shiva “at home is not always feasible depending on setup, timing etc”

Ummm…. gavra, shiva sometimes is held in another persons home due to various reasons. Among my friends, most did a lchaim/vort combo. Most of the friends who did this in a hall did so because they cannot afford a home large enough to host more than a handful of people at a time. The kallah’s friends would have to arange taking turns coming to say mazal tov. I think al tadin es chavercho is very much applicable here.

a mamin- they wish to be pregnant, or do they wish to be parents and pregnancy is a step on the way? For people who have lost one or more pregnancies, it’s nine long, stressful months.

in reply to: Some zionist thoughts for yom haatzmaut #1074161

DaMoshe- it looks like your research was done only from the Zionist perspective. While the Satmar rebbe did not want to cooperate with the Zionists on coordinating rescues on his people, he did work really hard to save their lives. He encouraged his followers to go into hiding or get visas to America. He felt that working with the Zionists would be causing many of his followers to lose their religion altogether. It is preferable to die than to lose Olam Haba, is it not? Don’t forget that the Satmar Rebbe himself went to Bergen Belsen. He didn’t exactly take the first flight to the US when trouble came along. Read what Dr. Ferenz Kennedy says about his time in Bergen Belsen with the Rebbe. You don’t have to agree with him, but try to open your mind a little to another perspective.

Are you sure your oven is fully preheated when you’re putting the cookies/cakes in? Also, if you use disposable baking pans it might take a bit longer. They don’t conduct heat as well as the reusable type.

in reply to: Precious Princess collections #1084930

I don’t know whether it’s true or not, but in order to collect the entire collection you would have to spend about $100. The doll isn’t worth more than maximum $20.

cherrybim- for me the message in pesach hotels, being as I can’t afford it myself, is that some people have more money than me. Since they can afford it, why should they not go? If I feel jealous, maybe I need to work on myself a little. Or maybe I should get a job to earn the money to go myself.

Israel is a strong and successful country, with a great economy, a resilient, well-educated and increasingly religious population, and a bright future.

A great economy? Seriously? And that’s why so many people are seeking jobs or better pay… People with college degrees can get as little as $10 an hour. People with high school diplomas can get more here.

in reply to: Parking Tickets- Innocent Until Proven Guilty? #1073004

It was not a bus stop, it was a no standing zone. According to driving regulations, it is permitted to drop off a passenger in a no standing zone. Only if it says no stopping can you not stop to drop off passengers.

I’ll admit it- you got me curious enough to google it. I love Wayside School! It exists to the same degree as the 13th floor in other buildings.

in reply to: Tragedy has fallen on all of us #1070958

Sam2- Traffic is a new danger. Fires are not. While we should be doing everything to preserve life, not doing something is not the same as doing the opposite.

in reply to: Tragedy has fallen on all of us #1070950

I don’t think anyone here is saying that a smoke detector is not a lifesaving device. There is however a big difference between not having a smoke detector and starting the fire yourself. People here seem to be having a hard time distinguishing that. If it reaches a point where AED’s become inexpensive, will it be endangering yourself not to carry one around with you?

in reply to: Tragedy has fallen on all of us #1070907

How is faulty wiring negligence? On part of the company, certainly. But on my part, how would I know? I once had a lamp that burst into flames randomly while I was using it. B”H nothing else caught. We had firefighters come down just to make sure there’s nothing wrong with the wiring of the house or outlet. They determined it was a wiring mistake of the lamp itself. We had that lamp for years and it was always fine. We need chasdei Hashem every minute of every day that we’re alive.

DaMoshe- if you were to be getting your brother’s credit card bill, would you keep it between you and your brother? Or would you notify the credit card company that you and your brother, while related, are not the same person?

stam a deya- Do you know what qualifies as a vaccine injury? If my parents would be the litigating type they could have sued for my “vaccine injury” as a child. While the doctor was giving me an injection, I strongly pulled my arm away. The needle ended up cutting my arm a bit and it was bleeding. There you go- vaccine injury.

So I finally came up with a theory about Quirrel and the references to his teaching in the past. Hogwarts is not the only school in England… it’s possible that Quirrel taught defense against the dark arts somewhere else.

in reply to: Is Black Plague a Hoax #1065273

Is there a vaccine for the plague?

There is a vaccine to protect people who are at high risk of exposure to the disease, such as military personnel under certain operational circumstances, or animal handlers in plague endemic areas. The vaccine requires multiple doses, frequent booster shots are needed and it can have significant side effects. The vaccine is not available for general public use.

in reply to: Who pays? #1065436

When I was a working teen, my parents paid for all my needs. My wants I had to pay out of my own pocket. This included any extra clothing, cd player, camp, etc. I ended up buying most clothing myself.

Is this like by the Bronx Zoo where you can bring back the cup next time? If so, go ahead.

in reply to: Disney Characters #1063146

I know I was always taught that kids dress up as what they really want to be, but now that I’m older I don’t really buy that anymore. When I was little I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. Why did I never dress up as one? I thought it would be a boring costume. I wanted to wear something different.

in reply to: What Color is the Dress? #1063613

cozimjewish- Google what color is the dress. It never looked anything other than black and royal blue to me… which is odd because it seems that most people saw it as white and gold. I think it has to do with what percentage of the day you spend in well lighted areas. People who spend more time in the dark have probably adjusted to add more light to everything they see. I spend enough time in well lit areas to automatically take away some light from everything…

in reply to: Women and Grace #1061763

As I’m a woman, I’m not familiar with the gemarah. However, I don’t see how it’s possible for a woman’s chiyuv not to be d’oyraysa. The mitzvah of birchas hamazon is not a shehazman grama. It’s when you eat a meal, whenever that may be. The busha I can think of for a man to me yotzei by a woman is simple. Since birchas hamazon is mentioned straight out in the torah it’s a busha that he wouldn’t know it. He has a chiyuv of limud torah while a woman does not.

in reply to: Taivah for movies #1147965

DaasYochid- While inappropriate movies are clearly wrong, movies with clean content are simply not appropriate for people truly focused on being frum. If we someone who does not fit in to our community we should start paying them some more attention. If we can’t find them a place in our community, we should try to help them find a place in another shomer shabbos community. There’s no need for them to lose their yiddishkeit completely.

They aren’t pushing for changes in the program for this school year. They’re requesting changes in the program written for the upcoming school year. As of next year they will be excluded if the program stays as is.

inquiring mind- yes. It’s not like a dish with nonkosher ingredients. It’s a fish, which according to the torah needs fins and scales to be kosher.

in reply to: Genetically Engineered Animals and Kashrus #1119560

Kind of like what oomis said – Does the resultant salmon have fins and scales? The torah gave us that to tell us whether a fish is kosher or not. That’s all we need.

in reply to: Husband away on Business trip #1058685

be good- while you may find it funny, for the op this is a difficult situation. While I don’t have my own car, if someone tells me his car is currently out of commission it isn’t funny. True, he can take the bus or train like all other car-less individuals, but that’s not what he’s used to. The op also didn’t mention for how long her husband will be away- it might be more of in the range of two weeks.

in reply to: The FreezerοΏ½ #1055553

I don’t think the freezer is affecting the shidduch crisis for one very simple reason. The boys coming out of the freezer now will be dating at the youngest girls who left seminary approximately seven months ago. If they would begin dating six months ago they would be dating the exact same girls. If they get engaged shortly after leaving the freezer it doesn’t affect the age gap at all. Only if it takes them five months they can begin dating the girls that are currently in seminary.

in reply to: Is it cruel to decorate animals? #1064009

It depends on the animal. A lazy cat usually doesn’t mind being dressed, but a more active one can be very irritated. If the animal is in pain then it’s assur.
