Some water fountains filter and cool the water, using electricity. Those should be plugged out before Shabbos.

I only recently got contacts (after a lot of nudging from my mom) and it’s fantastic. I can actually SEE in the pool!

You never tried prescription goggles? They’re actually pretty cheap on amazon.

    in reply to: Hypnotists #966791

Yes, a goblin can self-hypnotize himself and find out he’s not a goblin after all, but an orc.

    in reply to: Hypnotists #966784

watch the ImprovEverywhere hypnotist clip, and you’ll never look at hypnotist shows the same way again…

in reply to: Glasses or contacts? #966487

oomis- I know this isn’t much of a help, but maybe visit a specialist once, and always take the company he recommends. For prescriptions any regular doctor will do.

If it’s assur for women to learn Torah, why did Hashem tell Moshe Rabeinu to teach it to the women even before teaching it to the men?

in reply to: Glasses or contacts? #966483

Contacts with glasses for when you have a bad reaction to a particular lens solution. Although glasses give your neck exercise because your head needs to turn to look at things instead of just your eyes moving…

in reply to: Shopping with a carriage #966379

I like when stores have aisles wide enough to allow the carriages through without bumping.

Maybe try drinking a smoothie today. That’s usually easy to get down, even when you don’t have much appetite.

I firmly believe that women have a need to beautify themselves, to talk about their feelings and social relationships

You obviously never met me. You’d be surprised to see how different women can be from how you think they are…

RedNails19 – is it possible that you aren’t really listening to your friends really feel about marriage? As you know, not every marriage is a happy marriage. It’s possible that your friend was trying to tell you that she isn’t happy, and the way you talk about marriage is difficult for her to hear in her situation.

in reply to: But I wear crocs the whole year! #965599

    Me too. Even to work.

in reply to: Which is better: a bad chavrusa or no chavrusa? #966341

Toi- hate to break it to you, but it didn’t work on me. I was thinking that I don’t know hilchos gittin, but I think a get has to be written. What would saying anything do?

in reply to: Where are the Manhigim? #965934

gaw- you really need to learn a bit more about Meah Shearim. The people are mostly Toldos Aharon and Toldos Avaham Yitzchok chasidim.

in reply to: Where are the Manhigim? #965927

Nothing drastic happens. If a family does not meet local standards they won’t be able to send to a local school. No one would actually hurt them physically, or give them public yellings. The rebbetzin might invite a woman or girl who isn’t dressing right to her house for a private talk. All the stories that reach the news about people pouring bleach on “nonkosher” clothing is some hot-headed bocherim that are playing hookey from yeshiva. They’re not doing it because their rebbes approve of it- lehefuch, they’re doing it to get their rebbes mad at them.

in reply to: Where are the Manhigim? #965921

gaw- What you’re saying is entirely untrue. The general population of Meah Shearim does not enforce its way of life on anyone else. Have you ever had a civilized conversation with anyone who lives there? I’ve spoken to the Toldos Aharon rebbetzin and her daughters. I’ve also spoken to others in Meah Shearim. Despite the fact that I’m obviously very different from them, none of them ever said anything unkind to me. I didn’t hear a word of criticism about my mode of dress, which is very much below their standards. They keep their standards for themselves, and don’t want anyone to force them to lower them. That’s all.

in reply to: Lyrics for "Beshoh Sh'melech Hamoshiach Boh"? #965008

WIY- I didn’t assume based purely on my own opinion. I just wrote assume because that’s my style of writing. I don’t know why I thought there was no roof though, my mistake. I did find on chabad’s website the source for the lyrics. It’s from a yalkut shemoni. Can anyone explain though what it means? Why would he have to say that the geulah is here when the Bais Hamikdash is already built?

in reply to: Music Keyboard #964735

LBK- you can get a decent used keyboard on ebay for the same price as a new cheap one. Those are generally better values.

in reply to: Name of baby who almost drowned in the Catskills #964731

repharim- actually, we only avoid swimming in the nine days, not the whole three weeks. It’s sad that the baby passed away, and we should do our best to keep it from happening to other kids. It is important though to have foolproof gates around pools, and motion sensors with loud alarms in case these are violated.

in reply to: How long does the tzitzit begged have to be? #964765

I think it’s supposed to be long enough to cover 3/4 of the body of an average nine year old boy. I don’t know why, but that’s the measure.

in reply to: Teaching a baby to drink from a cup/straw #964697

The sippy cups with the grip handle are usually easiest for this age.

in reply to: Lyrics for "Beshoh Sh'melech Hamoshiach Boh"? #965002

Do these lyrics have any source? To me they don’t seem to make sense in two respects:

    1) I always assumed the Bais Hamikdash will be built after Moshiach comes.

    2) According to the diagrams I’ve seen in sefarim the Bais Hamikdash doesn’t have a roof. Unless by roof it means he’ll be standing in the heavens.

Most American office workers must have it… Asian offices I heard have exercise breaks.

in reply to: Watching the trial live #964425

pba- it’s been a few years since I was in school. I just gave an example of the last time I remember being that bored…

in reply to: Watching the trial live #964423

I have determined that watching a courtroom trial is only negligibly less boring and painful than sitting in an isolation chamber waiting for the dentist to pull all of your remaining teeth.

While that may be torturous, that wouldn’t be my definition of boring. Boring is more like having to sit in class for the full duration of a test when you finished the test in the first fifteen minutes.

oomis- you sound like a wonderful hostess! Most people don’t remember these things. ObstacleIllusion- maybe I’m strange, but I don’t store prescription drugs in my medicine chest- only over the counter. Prescription drugs are in a more concealed place than where any family member that cuts their finger will open.

Woodrow Wilson, the fourteen points were very well thought out. Or maybe Calvin Coolidge because he knew how to keep his mouth shut.

in reply to: Cutting off cars waiting on lineοΏ½rude or not? #963458

2scents- you’re absolutely allowed to switch into the right lane if the left lane is jammed. You aren’t allowed to switch into the right lane though if you’re planning on switching right back into the left lane.

in reply to: Cutting off cars waiting on lineοΏ½rude or not? #963449

temimus- I guess you’re not in NYS. According to NYS DMV website, it’s only legal to pass to the right in cases of emergency or no other option or something like that.

in reply to: Cutting off cars waiting on lineοΏ½rude or not? #963438

It’s not only rude, but if you’re passing to the right of the other cars it’s also illegal. By most entry ramps you need to be in the leftmost lane to enter the highway, so anyone cutting the line would be passing to the right.

in reply to: Student Visa for Israel #962778

When I went to seminary my mother went to the Israeli Embassy here in the US and got me a one year multiple entry visa. No, it didn’t say student anywhere on it. I had no need for that. They didn’t give me any issues about it. It is possible to revoke Israeli citizenship, but they don’t make it easy…

in reply to: Locking bedroom door when lending apartment #963178

Opening a medicine cabinet might not be for the sake of snooping. Not everyone remembers to pack bandages, tylenol, benadryl, or rubbing alcohol when going away for Shabbos. Most of the time I’m the only one to remember. They may have figured it’s okay to take what they needed. Whether they were correct or not is up to the host.

in reply to: Hiring as Kiruv #962539

I think the idea of hiring for the sake of kiruv is a very poor idea. When looking to fill a position, generally the best way to go about it is by looking for the person most suitable for the position. Doing otherwise will just lead to problems. I’m not saying you weren’t qualified to be a counselor at that point. It’s probable though that they found someone more suitable for this particular position. I doubt they kept the position empty. As much as you know Bais Yaakov and its standards, it’s possible that one day you would slip up and accidently forget to wear a skirt that’s long enough for their standards. That’s less likely to happen if they hire one of their own graduates. If you were the director of a Bais Yaakov daycamp and had the choice of hiring someone like you were then or a Bais Yaakov graduate, which would you choose?

OneOfMany- How did you guess? I saw so many people liked the series here, I decided it must be worth a try. My local library had it available. I didn’t have to spend any money on it…

in reply to: The CR Discworlders Club #1114561

Thank you OneOfMany. I’m still new to the series, so I probably don’t have much of a chance of catching up here…

It’s funny how rocking chairs are associated with old people while none of the old people I know have one. The old people I know are old enough that they consider themselves old.
