streekgeek- I used to be like that in a sense. Someone told me that “im ein ani li mi li” means that if I don’t stand up for myself, then no one else will. Others can worry about themselves.

YOSSI151- Although I do think there is a big problem with tuition, I don’t think this particular idea is a good one. Parents who are right now #25 on the list who have heard of it will just wait to be on the top ten and get it paid off. Almost everyone struggles to pay tuition. The only solution I can think of is to open a charter school geared toward frum kids- maybe starting later to allow them to attend torah classes before school or something like that.

Tehillim is in tanach. When you’re saying tehillim with kavanah, you’re learning torah as a zechus for whatever reason you’re saying it.
If the source for not learning tanach is because we should be learning mishna, than what’s the story with women? Women have no chiyuv of learning torah at all, it’s all optional. They should be able to say tehillim at night if that’s the case.

newhusband- I don’t even understand why you’re arguing over this. If you have the money, take the cleaning help. Right now, your wife is working full time carrying your child. She might feel awkward blaming everything on pregnancy, so don’t expect her to say it in every argument. Dropping hints that the house is a mess isn’t helpful- I’m sure she already knows. It’s already a blow to her pride that she can’t manage without cleaning help, don’t make it worse. If you don’t want to commit to long term, try it for a week or two and you’ll see what a difference it will make in your home. If you don’t want to trust random people in the coffeeroom, call your rav. He’ll probably tell you the same thing.

WIY- he can have bitachon that there will be a girl that already has a job that will be interested in marrying him. That’s not too far-fetched.
streekgeek- the reason there has to be a mitzva to tell us not to remind someone of there past, is because human nature is to do just that. Sometimes we have a hard time going against our nature and doing the right thing. I’m sorry you have to go through this.

I remember thinking that braces were super cool, and being so disappointed when my dentist said I don’t need them… :).
Carwashes and the dry cleaner rack were also cool. As was riding in the car backwards in my grandmothers station wagon. I never had those electronic pets, but I remember being jealous of my classmates that did. I would also stare wide eyed at my mother solving the Rubiks cube… I thought it was like magic!
streekgeek- you remove the skin from the chicken, put it in a baking tin. Peel and slice an onion and add that to the tin. Peel a potato, and cut into small pieces and throw it in too. Spice, cover with aluminum foil and bake on 350 until it smells and looks ready- usually an hour.
streekgeek- just remember that there’s no need to make gourmet meals. Chicken and potatoes are perfect…
If you cook well, go for it! Unless your wife thinks of the kitchen as her territory and doesn’t like when others mess with it. Speaking of mess, make sure you clean up after yourself when you’re done.
I’m with writersoul here. I have had limited controlled internet access from around 13 years old, and I think I benefited from it. I never had this forbidden fruit attraction to the internet, which to this day gives me better control over how I use it.

I couldn’t disagree with you more on this one. It is not the job of the wife to be a cleaning woman. Her job is to run the household and make sure everything runs smoothly. That does not mean doing everything herself. Since she is the spouse that spends most of the time at home though, she does have the most time available for doing the actual cleaning. If a maid isn’t within their budget, and she doesn’t like cleaning, she might want to take a part time job to pay for the maid. She does not however have to be the maid.

I think three chairs is a bit much, each one should only need one. But now that we’re having a mod-appreciation party, three cheers for the mods!! You do a really great job of blocking Josephs while keeping the conversation interesting…
Mods- Does it annoy you when you approve posts that you don’t agree with but are not outside guidelines? Do you comment in reply?
I think there was some form of bowling around then, and bowling on the streets would go under the issur of carrying.
HaleiVi- What sounds more gaivadig to you? “I think this should go in that corner” or “This would look much better in that corner, not a question it should go there” Which one has the “I” word?
Torah- a cut and set is usually about $100, unless you go to a brand name
hanz kegl- I have NEVER seen anyone wearing a leather skirt and a leather jacket. It’s too repetitive.
getzel1- are you sure that’s a bad thing? According to what you’re saying I’d assume that many women were stuck in unhappy marriages simply because they’d starve if they leave. I guess in those days girls with wealthy fathers were more likely to divorce, as they knew their fathers would support them.
eclipse- why does it have to be a Shevy? There are plenty of other companies that do a great job for less.
How about a home office where you hang every diploma any of you ever got including preschool diplomas? That way, it’s in a part of the house not everyone sees, and hidden among other papers. You can even put it up near the ceiling to make it hard to read… Even if you never get a job you can use the home office for all your coffeeroom time.
crisisoftheweek- the only way I know what you’re trying to write a mashal for is from your previous posts. The ones sitting on the bench reading the rule book are the ones following the rule book as well going by your mashal. The ones who think they’re out there playing baseball don’t have the right field, ball or equipment and they’re just doing whatever they want. They aren’t interested in what the rulebook says or what baseball is all about.
WIY- I don’t see what’s wrong with taking two hundred and then modifying them to say that you got the two hundred back.
We used to give nosh to kids who rang our bell, but now they stopped coming. The public school hands out notes telling parents to only let their children go trick-or-treating to stores and family, so since we fit neither criteria they don’t come.
WIY- I guess boys who cannot have a bris milah just aren’t jewish :).
always striving- Austrian Airlines is a decent airlines. Their planes are older than most airlines, but are clean and in decent shape. The crew was very helpful and nice. In Vienna though, the stop isn’t fun because they make you wait before going through security for the next flight, so you can’t sit in the waiting area right before the plane for a while. If you get a short stopover though, it’s worth it.
WolfishMusings- I didn’t say this is true to all men, I was referring to men in general.
Little Frog- Did I ever say that the gemora was written by male bigots? I don’t believe I did. Would a woman that wants a daughter be a female bigot, or only a man who wants a son?
WIY- Was that in Baby Island? In that book, the parents wanted their kid to be spoken to like an adult, and the kid only ended up learning to speak when it was spoken to in baby language… It seems like in every culture babies are spoken to differently, and I’d assume it’s for a reason.
What I would do is make sure to replace the chair with a solid sturdy chair that can withstand a greater weight. If the shul doesn’t have enough money for the bench right now, they can ask him as a new neighborhood resident to become a member of the shul and then use his money directly for the new sturdy bench.
I’d say that fathers prefer sons, and mothers prefer daughters. Perfectly logical that the gemora being written by men would prefer sons… as would a Rabbi giving a bracha for children.
