I agree that a shadchan should get the “going rate” for shadchanus. It doesn’t seem to be clear though that the going rate is $1,000. If this shadchan has done several shiduchim in the past and gotten $50- $100, perhaps that is the going rate. Shadchanim do work hard, and maybe the going rate should be more, but who says it is?

Clothing. If you share you end up fighting over the fuzzy sweatshirts. It’s generally a good idea to have separate drawers altogether… That way if the husband wants to put a pair of socks that he only wore once back in the drawer, no problem!

I was actually just reading an article that recommended this position, with a blanket underneath him/her. This position lets the mother keep an eye on the baby better than inside the wagon, and doesn’t have the safety issues of the car seat clicked on top. Yes, babywearing is ideal for shopping. I don’t know why though, but for some reason it’s looked at as strange in some communities. You might have found it weird to see the baby in a sling as well.

If you don’t want to spend money, I can give you a few tips that sometimes work, but also sometimes mess up the card. 1) put it into a card reader and into the computer

2)run an anti-virus scan on it

    3)enable viewing hidden files/folders

    4)enable viewing of system files

if you see anything, copy and paste elsewhere.

If she’s only four she might still fit into the headbands meant for babies that don’t have any hair yet. Those are a soft cotton and shouldn’t irritate her scalp. Also, before she starts losing her hair she can go with her parents to a portrait studio for memories sake.

OURtorah- I wish her a speedy refuah sheleimah. How old is she? Depending on her age, she might appreciate a shopping trip for accessories that don’t need hair to look good. Get her some flower headbands, hats, etc. My little sister has a classmate that doesn’t have hair. She wears headbands to school every day. She looks really cute in them. Losing hair is really hard, but being bald doesn’t have to be. I don’t think my sister’s classmate ever had hair, but she doesn’t seem to feel the lack of it.

WolfishMusings- Bone marrow recipients for the rest of their lives have the DNA of their donor rather than their own in their blood. The rest of their body continues to have their own DNA, as would be expected. This actually complicated a criminal investigation a few years ago. I was thinking more along the lines of chimeras, which it’s unknown how many there are. Since there are almost no symptoms, most people with more than one set of DNA will never find out about it. I mentioned previously the case of Karen Keegan who was told that genetically her children were not hers until it was found that she was a chimera and didn’t know about it. Yes, this is very rare. To be matir a mamzer though, you go to great lengths.

R’ Moshe Shternbuch has a T’shuvah (chelek 4 in the middle, I think) that says that blood type and DNA can’t prove paternity because maybe the doctors will realize 50 years from now that this really doesn’t work.

WADR to R. Shternbuch, the possibility of this is highly unlikely, since it’s been proven over and over again.

I think that as much as DNA can prove paternity, it can’t absolutely disprove it for a female child. There’s always the rare case of the DNA of the blood being different. Less rare is if the father was a bone marrow recipient in which case if they took the DNA of his blood it will appear that none of his children are his.

Syag Lchochma- If one of your kids would be a different blood type, it can also be an indication that either you or your husband have two sets of DNA. This is rare, but it does happen. Look it up… a set of twins that merges completely prebirth will appear to be one person in every way other than the mixed DNA of two people within the same body. It can even give false negatives for DNA tests.

zahavasdad- theoretically, that would be correct, but it’s been found that this is not true 100% of the time. If any of the parents has more than one set of DNA, it can lead to such impossible results. This was seen when a womans children seemed not to be her children based on blood type… It was then discovered that the mother had two sets of DNA.

ubiquitin- I said Sharon is not brain dead. According to American diagnostic standards though, he would have been misdiagnosed brain dead a few years ago. I don’t think a lack of pupil dilation is adequate proof that the brain is indeed dead. I did hear that the doctors tried to trick the mother into signing an organ donation form in middle of the night once.

ubiquitin- I never said that that’s how brain death is legally determined. I said that there can be brain function that will only be detected with scans- hence the patient can be legally brain dead while in actuality still have some brain function.

    ubiquitin-

During the two-hour fMRI scan conducted three days ago, researchers tested Sharon’s response to various stimuli: family pictures, a recording of his son’s voice, and human touch. They said they were surprised to discover significant activity in relevant parts of his brain in response to all tests. “These results point to mental processing of sensory information,” Soroka reported. Sharon was transferred to Soroka from Sheba Medical Center for the purpose of the neurological tests.

Looks like to rule out brain death in Sharon they did use scans. Not just checking pupil dilation.

Also, the mother claims that when she whispers Jahi’s name in her ear she responds. The doctors claim it’s just random muscle reflexes that coincidentally occurred at the same time. If Jahi indeed does respond to her name then she is not brain dead.

ubiquitin- an article I read said that Ariel Sharon was considered brain dead until scans proved otherwise. Apparently you can’t listen and feel for brain function as you can breathing and pulse. Sam2- I never heard about that. I did not think the heart can last that long without the brain, but even in the case you brought it stopped after two days. It’s over a week since this girl was ruled brain dead, and her heart is still beating. I do not see how she can be considered dead in the eyes of the law.

ubiquitin- she is only braindead according to the scans we do right now. It’s possible that there is some brain function that current testing does not detect. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any. I believe that if the heart is still beating it means there must be some level of brain function supporting that. If I remember correctly, if a spinal cord is severed the heart stops pumping almost instantaneously. I hope for the family’s sake that this turns out to be a big mistake and she wakes up in good shape and proves all the doctors wrong. No one even dreams that this can happen to their child from such a simple surgery.

Suggest, don’t demand. Instead of “Take a coat or else you’ll catch a cold- it’s freezing out there” say “It’s very cold outside- I’d suggest you take a coat.” That will only provoke someone looking to be provoked.
