I think you mean Hurricane Gloria. And it happened in 1985. I remember taking apart our Sukkah before the hurricane hit. We also took apart my parents’ Sukkah. It eas a good thing that we did. The winds were so strong, that many Sukkahs were completely destroyed.

Seasons dropped the ball by not opening BEFORE Pesach. This was their opportunity to draw crowds in. Unless they have cut-rate prices, they have a very hard time getting a clientele because the lack of parking in the area is a MAJOR drawback.

Try “unstuffed cabbage” using ground chicken (seasoned as you like). Roll into meatballs. Layer meatballs and bagged cabbage in tomato sauce mixed with equal parts of water, a little salt/pepper, and instead of sugar or honey, use xylitol which has an OU-P.

It is against Sharia law to have insurance of any type (considered gambling). Not so in Halacha. There is also no issue of a “lack of Emunah” – it’s really just another form of personal hishtadlut.

Are you able to move your jaw, or are you just in pain? Did you cut/puncture yourself recently? And if so, are you up to date on your tetanus shots? Google tetanus/lockjaw and see if the symptoms match your own, and if so, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION NOW.

And I forgot to add in my last post: 15 years ago, my tuition bill was about $3500 per/child. The Catholic School tuition was about $800 per child.

m in israel – I don’t know if things have changed, but 15 years ago, I worked with a Catholic individual who sent his children to Catholic schools. He told me then that there was a tuition cap after 3 children. If tuition is 3500 per child, and you have 4 children, then most you pay is $10,500. But I think that only works for elementary schools because I have another former collegue who has a child in Catholic High School and the tuition for his son is in the $15K range. No tuition breaks (tried to qualify for either an academic and sports scholarship, but though the son had great grades, they weren’t high enough, and sports scholarships are even harder to come by).

AinOhdMilvado – I’ll go one better. If he is the “son of G-d”, then how could he be descended from the House of David? Joseph was a descendent. But if he’s “G-d’s son”, then he’s not Joseph’s son. The Christians make a big deal about his lineage – “I will send you a saviour from the house of David”.

I once read an article about “nocturnal enuresis” (aka, bedwetting) while waiting in a doctor’s office for an unrelated issue. The article addressed issues with children around 8 years of age, but I think the approach could be modified for an older child who wants to do this on his own.

The suggestion for the parents was to wake up the child at around 1:00 AM, and physically get him or her into the bathroom. The child may need some help because he/she will be disoriented. After a few weeks of doing this, the parent stops waking the child. The article said that for the most part, the child will stop bed-wetting.

An older child could set his alarm clock, and adjust the time that best works for him.

And before you dismiss the solution, this approach worked for my son, except after a few days, I personally couldn’t handle the 1:00 AM wakeup. Instead, I woke him before I went to sleep. I did this for a few weeks, but once I stopped waking him up, the problem stopped.

    Wishing you Hatzlacha.

shev143 – We wouldn’t have control. The School Board has control. All subjects would follow NYC curriculum. Remember “Heather has 2 Mommies”? How about the free distribution of condoms and birth control presciptions? You want that? You want “Holiday parties”? And if you think these schools would be comprised of only “unzerer mentchen”, you’re wrong. Forget about separate sex schools. In fact, little Moishie would be in school with Shaniqua, Achmed, Xian, and Mallory.

Wolf – I do believe that in theory, it could work. The NYC school system can’t handle the extra load. There are already over 1 million students in the public school system. Classrooms are already overcrowded. And poor-performing schools are being shut down. The Board of Ed doesn’t want us there as much as we don’t want to be there.

I heard a story a number of years back (don’t know if this is urban legend) about an Orthodox woman whose child needed services for some learning disability. I believe the family lived in a NYC suburb. The child clearly needed the services and the Board was trying to wiggle its way out of providing them. She turned to the group and said, “The child needs the services, and you don’t want to comply. I am the head of my child’s PTA. Tomorrow, I can have the parents of 600 students lined outside these offices, demanding placement of their children in your local schools, and you would have to provide it.” Knowing that she meant business and knowing that they didn’t have the resources for the extra 600 students, they gave her the services that her child needed.

Trying to add 20,000 (and more) Yeshiva students to the NYC school system could bring some relief to yeshivas. The only reason it wouldn’t work is because we as a people are so badly splintered, that we couldn’t get together to force the City’s hand.

This can only end badly. Muslim countries know dictatorships or theocracies. There is no concept of democracy or human rights under Islam. The Muslim Brotherhood is involved in the events in Egypt. If Mubarak falls (and he probabaly will), the cold peace between Israel and Egypt is dead. And Jordan won’t be too far behind.

mamashtakah – “..He told me it was OK to switch nusach, but not to switch pronunciation to Sfardit. His reasoning was that most people who do so end up pronouncing the words incorrectly.”

The Sephardim pronounce Hebrew correctly. Ashkenazim destroy the language, mostly by putting the emphasis on the wrong syllable. By doing this, they often change the meaning of the phrase. And before anyone jumps all over my comments, even the ‘holy’ Artscroll Siddurim have indicators of where to put the emphasis.

I also think that there is room to say that there both ways are possible from a Torah perspective. Regarding Yitzchak and Rivka, the verse indicates that Yitzchak loved Rivka after marriage (Breishit 24:67)

I think is’s very telling that Rashi is silent on this verse. It seems to mean that it should be understood as it is read.

So what does the pasuk mean when it says “VaYe’ehav Ya’akov et Rachel” (Breishit 29:18), where it is clearly stated before Yaakov marries Rachel?

Please be careful not get a dog if you live near any Holocaust survivors. They are terribly afraid of dogs because they were used in the camps and ghettos for control. Even if you want a smaller, tamer dog, the fear is still there for the survivors and it would be unfair to mentally torture them.

Maybe he really meant the name “Avihayil” (with a H”eh not a Chet). There are two women with that name mentioned in Divrei Hayamim (D”HY I 2:29 and D”HY II 11:18). The second one is identified as a granddaughter of Yishai (daughter of David’s brother Eliav).

The “problem” of over-education of girls starts in elementary schools. Have you ever seen the kids get off their respective school buses? The girls have bulging back packs, multiple looseleafs, and hours of homework. The boys, stroll off the buses with one or two worksheets, and have at most, a half hour worth of homework. The girls are taught to work harder at a much younger age. All of this is in order to pressure and prepare them to enter the workforce to support their Kollel husbands. So why shouldn’t they feel the need to be more accomplished? They have to be more accomplished!

Everything is made harder for the girls. Did you ever look at the Seminary applications? They have strict deadlines, mission statements, etc. Guys? They shop around for a yeshiva, and then apply to the one or two that they want, AFTER they have already been accepted. How about once they get to Israel? Girls have tremendous amounts of works: prep, papers, tests, homework. What do the guys have to do? Sit in class. No homework. No real exams to see if they are really progressing. All the guys get an A on their transcript. Not so with the girls.

Are the guys under pressure to finish their Bachelors by 20 and Masters by 21?

And then the guys have the nerve to say they don’t want someone smarter than them? I don’t know if its due to stupidity or arrogance.

Ruach HaKodesh as it applies to leaders of K’lal Yisrael means something different than the thread here implies. Ruach HaKodesh is a form of N’vuah. NO ONE today has N’vuah. The period of N’vuah ended with the prophecies of Malachi. Ruach HaKodesh is some Divine inspiration, but it is not on the level of N’vuah of the past. Also, if you say that Rashi, or any commentator, had Ruach HaKodesh, how could one be “cholek” on him? No one is allowed to disagree with a Navi! How could the Ramban disagree with the commentary of Rashi if Rashi had a form of N’vuah? The great G’dolei Yisrael were holy men, but they do not have N’vuah. They have Da’as Torah.
