I seem to be misunderstanding this whole thread, WMBB’s comment seemed to mean to me that she thought that the fact that the children who needed resource room seemed to come from families who were not moser mefesh to pay tuition possibly indicating a lesson for us if we chose to learn one. What did I miss or misunderstand to cause all the anger that is appearing above?

Happen to agree with CAD although I wouldn’t go as far as reporting but it really is interesting to see how makpid e/o is on chayav inish… and don’t seem to care as much on other mitzvos. As far as I know v’ahavta l’reiacha komocha is probably at least as big yet i do not hear people debating the little details of this mitzva that according to Hillel encapsulates the whole Torah. Try driving, walking around or shopping in the busy commercial areas and see how people practice this mitzvah. When we have this mitzvah perfect than maybe we can focus on being medadkdek on mitzvos like Chayav Inish… Btw, I have had friends call me in tears on Purim over their husbands behavior while drunk. Many women dread Purim because of it, I guess it’s more important than sholom bayis.

canine, talk to hatzolah members before you make such claims.

not so easy to find places that take clothing. N’shei Ahavas Chesed in BP has a clothing drive 4 times a year and sends the stuff to Israel. You have to pay a dollar a pound. Unfortunately they had one last week and the next won’t be for a few months. You can try to call them and see if they take clothing in between.

tbt, have you seen the regents? they are much harder and have many more requirements than when I took regents. The grading system makes no sense to me but the actual tests seem to be harder not easier.

Uniforms definitely make life easier, but why do they have to be so expensive? We are sort of held captive, paying top dollar for something that we have no choice about. High school uniform skirts can run over $50 and the sweaters are over $30. Regarding the white shirts, I would love to know who decided that boys should wear white shirts especially those still in elementary school? It used to be that boys did not put on white shirts until high school and now it’s right after bar mitzva. How many teen age boys can keep white shirts clean a whole day?! why can’t we let kids be kids while they are still kids? What is our rush to make them into adults so soon? I just heard of a Yeshiva where the boys put white shirts on at 12 years old, soon it will be in nursery to show what serious learners are pre schooler are.

i think a lot of you are not counting in how shalach monos can be a family activiy. In my family it involves all of us. we try to keep it as cheap as possible but try to come up with something that we would enjoy getting. We spend many hours together working on the shalach monos and everyone feels like they were an important part of it. The kids enjoy distributing the shalach monos, not for the money (although they don’t mind that) but because they anticipate the reactions they will receive. They take pride in giving something they know the recipient will enjoy. I believe the memories my children are building of Purim are worth whatever we spend. btw, I too believe that matonos leevyonim is supposed to be at least as important as mishloach monos and we actually have our children give from their own money, but we do not discuss how much we give for that or for that matter, how much we give the rest of the year. Everyone knows their own matzav and gives accordingly.

to Ima, i also stopped using flanken because it is too expensive but I found a butcher in BP that really has great prices on it. the Belzer butcher on 43rd off 13th freezes any flanken that doesn’t get sold that day, then they sell it for 15% off. they have beautiful packs of flanken that are not so expensive in the first place and are then 15% off. I can usually get a nice pack for less than $10. and no, I am not Belz and have no connection to the store, I only started shopping there because I have a relative for shabbos that only uses Belzer Shechita.

Both noam and yedidim are yeshivish day camps. noam has a great program, but yedidim is supposed to be on another level, they try to emulate a sleep away camp. they start at 9:30 and go until 6 or 7:30 they have 4 major trips etc.. (according to what I remember my son telling me. )Yedidim is much more expensive. Yedidim is supposed to have the most learning of any day camp ( I think that is why my son’s yeshiva pushes it)

i do not think the owners are makpid of bags unless you waste them in large quantites. many shoppers take extra bags that they don’t use and even if you are window shopping today, you may end up buying something because that is easy to do in supermarkets. Also window shoppers may see something that will bring them back another time. I believe that pomegrante of all stores would encourage you to browse.

it is possible to give more matonos leevyonim while still giving as many mishloach monos as you wish. there are some people and certainly kids who enjoy giving mishloach monos, why do you feel the need to take away their enjoyment and make them feel guilty. the Torah gave the mitzvos for both, let everyone enjoy. I would venture to guess that those who are generous with their mishloach monos are probably generous throughout including their matonos leevyonim.

canine, try coming home from working all day, picking up your kids, making supper and doing homework daily. try figuring out when you’re going to shop, cook and clean for yom tov while you are doing the above, try figuring out how the laundry will get washed folded and ironed numerous times a week while you are doing the above, try speaking to the person who wants you to make a meal for a friend or neighbor while you are doing the above because you have so much free time. much of this is done daily while juggling many other issues that come up. the kids are sick who stays home. the kids have vacation who stays home. who stays up all night pesach cleaning (and I do mean all night till 5 am) because it has to get done and there is no one else to do it. B”H all this is a brocha but it is very tiring and exhausting. Canine, you sound young, ask the men who are in it and they will tell you that men have it much easier. If they don’t they have no idea what they’re wives do. there are many women who would love to have to go to minyan and leave their husbands to cope with the house. there are many times women have to figure out how to be in 3 places at once while relieving their husbands of any of this stress so they can learn or work and daven in peace. It is rare for a woman to have to do just one thing at a time. Men get to do what they are doing one thing at a time.

I believe that the gemarah says this because men are mechuyav in more mitzvos. the carrying on the name is a modern idea because until a few hundred years ago people did not have last names. To SJS.. the baby does not remember and reaps the benefits for ever. I am sorry but women work much harder in the frum world and all boy has to pay with is having a bris for a lifetime of easier treatment.

i think a lot of this should stop. have you been to any vorts lately? the newest shtick is to give giftware as gifts. couples are getting platters and napkin rings and a few peices of stemware and all kinds of narishkeit that is probably not even their tastes. the gift stores are making a fortune but I don’t think anyone else benefits. they are costly and i am sure most don’t get used. I was at a vort of a couple that plans on living in Israel, do you really think they are shlepping all that stuff with them? Save the money and buy a really decent wedding present.

Like every stage of life it has it’s advantages and disadvantages. Personally I wouldn’t want to repeat it but there were times that I probably felt happier than ever after. You have little choice about which stage you’re in so try to enjoy each one, they pass before you know it ( I know it’s hard to believe).

one thing I do when my children get old enough to learn about listening to megillah but not able to sit through it is I go to megillah for a little bit. We stand outside until we hear a haman and come in then so not to disturb. we stay for a few minutes so the child/children can chap a few hamans and then leave during a haman. It gives the child the feeling of having heard the megillah without having to be quiet which for sure would not happen. Of course it means i have to go to the later laining to be yotzei.
