May 10, 2011 10:52 pm at 10:52 pm in reply to: What makes your blood pressure go up on a scale of 1-10? #765851commonsenseParticipanttrying to pass a double parked huge suv or truck when there is just just just barely enough space.
May 10, 2011 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767646commonsenseParticipanti was on 13th and 18th aves today and did not see these signs. i don’t know how effective they are but this problem is really getting worse. store windows have mannequins with skirts above the knee. I see women walking with skirts above the knee. what’s funny is today i saw at two different times, women who did not look the least bit stylish yet their skirts were above the knee (obviously frum women). I think the rabbonim need to talk to the store owners as much as the women shopping.
May 10, 2011 10:35 pm at 10:35 pm in reply to: Firestorm After Der Zeitung Deletes Hillary Clinton from Iconic Photo #1052688commonsenseParticipantmseeker, i’m responding to your question of why should we care, we need to care because we live among literally billions of non jews whom we ask to respect our religious differences and often to make accommodations for us when necessary. if they think us different but normal then they can respect us. it they think us radicals then any religious difference becomes radical. I personally have no problem with newspapers not printing pictures of women, often i think it funny but if you think it more tznius go right ahead. a newspaper that is a public forum has to be careful not to tread on outsider’s toes because until moshiach comes we need to be able to live among non jews peacefully. better to not print pictures obtained from non jewish sources if they need altering then to chance this hulabaloo.
May 9, 2011 11:03 pm at 11:03 pm in reply to: House in Brooklyn was extended, how do I find out if it was done legally #765653commonsenseParticipantof course, i only clicked on the link because it was posted here and i wanted to see what they said about my house. no one told us there was a violation so i have no clue why there is one there. i would like to know what is going on.
May 9, 2011 11:01 pm at 11:01 pm in reply to: Firestorm After Der Zeitung Deletes Hillary Clinton from Iconic Photo #1052608commonsenseParticipanta mamin, i can’t believe you have internet access! while their mistake was unintentional they print a newspaper that is accessible to anyone who wants to purchase it. they made yidden look like backward radicals. this story is the cover story on aol and acc. to others on yahoo. there are literally millions on non frum jews and gentiles reading this story to whom the concept of tznius to this extent is foreign and they think we are flat out crazy! read the comments! I agree that we can do whatever we want as long as we keep it among ourselves. the rest of the world does not understand so don’t put it in front of them. I know the newspaper had no intention of causing this outcry but unfortunately it has occurred. there are many who are comparing us to radical muslims, not exactly the image we care to cultivate.
May 9, 2011 9:21 pm at 9:21 pm in reply to: House in Brooklyn was extended, how do I find out if it was done legally #765651commonsenseParticipantwe had no problem getting a mortgage and renewing it twice, so the violation can’t be too major. how can i find anything out without contacting an architect?
May 9, 2011 6:49 am at 6:49 am in reply to: House in Brooklyn was extended, how do I find out if it was done legally #765644commonsenseParticipantyaakov doe, thanx for the link, i tried my own house and found a violation, how can I find out what the violation is?
commonsenseParticipantare we really turning out better kids with all these rules? in our day there was no question about fathers coming to graduations and kids going off the derech were a tiny percentage of kids. now we are so frum fathers can’t see their daughters graduate but all we hear about is kids at risk. maybe the schools need to reevaluate some of these newer policies.
commonsenseParticipantwhere’d you find such a treasure?
commonsenseParticipantcheck the Shaarei Dima, it’s a sefer of tefilos that are said at a kever at appropriate times. It might have what you’re looking for.
commonsenseParticipantnone of you girls are excessively short. Many frum people are short and as long as they are not extremely short it is not usually a big problem for shidduchim. short girls have a much easier time than very tall girls because they can easily date both tall and short boys and anything in between.
commonsenseParticipantWe live in Brooklyn and last year we took a vacation to Lakewood. It was a great trip! it was wonderful having an easy time finding food to eat and no problem with finding minyanim. it was probably one of the nicest trips we’ve taken. so coming to brooklyn doesn’t sound silly if you don’t live here, enjoy!!
commonsenseParticipanteveryone has different tastes. try them all and decide for yourself.
commonsenseParticipantif you want a cheap place to eat with good food, try shnitzi’s they are in Bp and in flatbush.
commonsenseParticipantmods, I love the quote under adorable!
commonsenseParticipantgumball, teshuva is actually what you have learned all the years yomin noraim time. The steps of charata, azivas hachet etc.. that is the actual way to do teshuva, but you really need to mean it.
commonsenseParticipantsternberg changed ownership recently and is trying to attract a different crowd. i think the dress code of old might have become more right wing. (gap and old navy are fine in almost any non chassidish camp)
commonsenseParticipantcall a good friend and vent, thanx friend!
May 3, 2011 4:01 am at 4:01 am in reply to: Getting Married & Trying To Decide To Have TV Or Not #764291commonsenseParticipantwhen you have internet, you really don’t need tv. pretty much anything you can find on tv you can find on the internet. having a tv makes it easier so it’s probably better to start without one, if you really want to see something you can find it online.
commonsenseParticipantalways offer, the most anyone can do is to say no and as someone who shops herself an a lot I would love if people offered to help me out at times!
commonsenseParticipantmaybe chayav is more than one family member sharing a sign on name.
commonsenseParticipant1. GUMBALL, mazel tov, 2. maybe you should okay it with your parents before inviting the cr. 3. do you want gemach’s or rentals?
commonsenseParticipantfrom what I know they are a very frum balebatishe well off crowd. I’m pretty sure they are either very large bungalows or homes. I know a few of the people who go there and they are very nice people but they do live the nicer life. ( I met a friend buying a phone for her guest room there, My bedroom in my bungalow is my guest room as well as my storage room, etc… so you can see that it is not your old time bungalow colony). The people I know would treat the counselors very nicely so I think you will enjoy working there.
commonsenseParticipanthey, went out for pizza at 3:30, the store was still going strong, also went into the bakery, saw a restaurant that was open, and plenty of people around.
commonsenseParticipantcooked until last night, shabbos is all take out. tonite is whatever you find.
commonsenseParticipantThat someone can even ask this question can cause pain to the parents that have an only child. the majority of people in our community want larger families and I assume that if someone has only one child it is because Hashem decided and not the couple. I am sure that living with that fact would have caused them significant pain throughout the years and then to find out that their child is having a harder time doing a shidduch because of something beyond their control that they themselves would have loved to have been different is just very painful. I know there are people to whom Hashem has been very kind and therefore when it comes to shidduchim they think they are better than those whom Hashem has chosen to test but in reality, Hashem is the one who makes these decisions and those who are lucky should not be so picky on such narishkeit issues. Sorry adorable because I don’t mean to attack you personally but try to look at the world from the other side.
commonsenseParticipantspiral does that mean things like souvenirs? chol hamoed is a time many people go on trips and like to buy mementos of the trip.
commonsenseParticipanthey bored this is the YESHIVA world.
commonsenseParticipantbrother, potatoes, corn and rice are all starches.
commonsenseParticipantso nice to hear i am not the only one who feels that way
April 14, 2011 4:26 am at 4:26 am in reply to: To those who are Pesachdik, what have you cooked, baked? #759189commonsenseParticipantdoes it really inspire you? it intimidates me! We just dug out a bunch of stuff that got moldy and rusty because it got wet and have to scrub everything. I am quite dreading the whole thing so hearing that people are already cooked is not inspiring.
April 14, 2011 4:22 am at 4:22 am in reply to: HELP-what are you making for a main dish for SEDER-diabetic friendly! #758987commonsenseParticipantagree with deiya, but here is another easy relatively diabetic friendly way to make chicken for the seder, saute onions diced carrots and tomatoes(if you use them). Add the chicken skin on and let it stew in it’s own juices. add whatever spices you like. it’s sort of like fricassed chicken, and tastes delicious. if you don’t use tomatoes or spices, leave them out, I did this last year and it was really good. it also warms up really well so it can be cooked before or used as left overs.
commonsenseParticipantdownstate (i don’t remember its new name)is one of the best programs around and it has people who are not just out of school and it is one of the cheapest programs because it is a suny or cuny school but it is very!!! hard to get into.
April 13, 2011 11:04 pm at 11:04 pm in reply to: Free Prescription Glasses – VERY Limited Time #806992commonsenseParticipanthlm, I was talking about the place mod 80 was talking about.
commonsenseParticipantcherry, they used to have nothing on the table, and would hold a bag under the matzah to catch the crumbs. I don’t know what they did by korech, but I imagine that they put the sandwich together and ate it over a bag the same way.
April 13, 2011 6:27 pm at 6:27 pm in reply to: Free Prescription Glasses – VERY Limited Time #806987commonsenseParticipantI don’t have time for this b/4 pesach, can you somehow keep this current so those of us who don’t have time now will remember to do this after pesach?
commonsenseParticipantpersonally i think they should abolish the electoral college and let each vote count. with computers today there is no reason we cannot have the actual popular vote.
April 13, 2011 5:09 am at 5:09 am in reply to: The Bernstain Bears and Too Much Pesach Vacation #759371commonsenseParticipantmany women who work as something other than teachers take off many days before pesach to get it done.
commonsenseParticipantcherry, there are some people that do not allow matzah at the same time other food is on the table. they eat the matzah first on a plastic then replace the plastic and eat the rest of the meal.
commonsenseParticipantEclipse, you don’t have to prove yourself to them, they are your children and most will only be able to appreciate what they put you through later in life. You sound like an amazingly stable understanding person who has her head on straight. Treat your children like you would in every other situation. do not be afraid of their reactions, just be yourself. I think that by seeing that things are still normal by you, your children will feel reassured and begin behaving like should. (eventually) hatzlocha rabba!!! Hashem should give you the emotional and physical koach you need.
April 11, 2011 9:50 pm at 9:50 pm in reply to: Are No-Iron Dress shirts (like Paul Fredrick, etc) REALLY absolutely no iron? #785104commonsenseParticipantsorry they usually do not look freshly ironed. they may not look totally creased but they do not have that crisp freshly ironed look.
commonsenseParticipanthealth and popa, I don’t understand, what part of ‘bal yerae, bal yimatai(forgive the spelling) means just not having chometz you might eat on pesach?
commonsenseParticipanti am here, you can get it at most jewish toy stores and judaica stores, it’s really great for all ages!
April 11, 2011 12:43 am at 12:43 am in reply to: Calling On All The Warm And Fuzzy Posters!:) #758945commonsenseParticipantget a Leah Forster dvd and watch, laugh and relax.
commonsenseParticipanthope we don’t need it but thanx
commonsenseParticipantare we talking about a theoretical magazine? You would have a lot of competition but if it is good I and I am sure others would give it a try.
commonsenseParticipantbored, when you spray hairspray there is a good chance some will land in your mouth.
commonsenseParticipantI think on a blog people just want to type quickly and say what they want, they don’t take the time to check spelling and grammar.
