commonsenseParticipant
my kids also like mendelsohn’s the best.
commonsenseParticipantzahavasdad, the gift usually goes to the young couple or the bar mitzva boy, so you covering your plate doesn’t help the parents. People want guests at their simcha. the guests enhance a simcha so gifts should not be a requirement. years ago gifts were given to help a couple begin a new life because many couldn’t afford to buy the basics. today most parents set up their children with the necessities. Unfortunately we have held on to the gift giving requirement. Ka”h today, most people go to many many simchos a year so the gift giving has become very costly.
commonsenseParticipantmohelim need to pay their bills too, so what is wrong with them accepting presents? Usually they do not state a specific price.
commonsenseParticipantbike, i have the same questions! i spend thousands a year on gifts that don’t even look like anything. We have takonos on many things, i think the Rabbonim should make a takana that no one except close relatives give gifts. I used to be happy when i got invitations in the mail, now my first thought, many times, is about the gift.
commonsenseParticipantcoke, where do you live, i desperately need a good cleaning lady!!!!
commonsenseParticipantcan i become a moderator so that i too can eat all the chocolate i want?
June 21, 2011 2:31 pm at 2:31 pm in reply to: Which large appliance dealers are reasonable with good cust service? #778767commonsenseParticipantI live in Brooklyn but have used Town appliance for many appliances. they have excellent prices, pretty decent customer service and deliver to brooklyn.
commonsenseParticipanti’ve heard very nice things about it, supposed to be very warm.
commonsenseParticipantis anyone else besides me a little dismayed that so many frum high school kids are surfing the web, even if it is on jewish sites like this?
commonsenseParticipantwhen you figure it out please let me know! 🙂
commonsenseParticipantmany parents not only read and analyze but also save report cards, so it pays to be careful what you write because the child may look at it 30-40 years down the road.
commonsenseParticipantthanx shlishi, loved it! I can’t show this to my husband, i have the attitude that he had the easier day going to work. (he usually agrees with me)
commonsenseParticipantnot crazy at all, i went back to school (a much easier program than social work but still had to sit in class, take tests, do many papers and do fieldwork) when i was a few years older than you are now and I was one of the younger ones in my class. AY”H you will have many years to put to use your degree.
June 12, 2011 6:39 pm at 6:39 pm in reply to: please pass along; cars being TOWED from toys r us parking lot!! #1017299commonsenseParticipantthere’s no beach there
commonsenseParticipantzees, my kids were quoting the tape by heart over shabbos. we love the himmelsteins!
commonsenseParticipantswimming then bike riding. they will make you feel like it’s summer.
commonsenseParticipanteither the binah or mishpacha recently had a recipe for a french roast. it used tomatoes onions and dry red wine. i was going to try it but decided to try an overnight recipe instead.
commonsenseParticipanti have a few recipes for pareve cheese cake and they taste good. what is wrong with pareve cheese cake. it doesn’t necessarily taste like cheese cake but it is good in it’s own right. would it be better if it was named tofutti cake.
commonsenseParticipantwhen typing fast it slows you down to use puncutation. when you’re just trying to have a conversation and it’s not for something official it’s ok to not have punctuation as long as your post is understandable.
commonsenseParticipantit sounds like your mother is supportive of you so are you sure she will bother you about it? As the mother of teen age girls there are many times my girls do things that i think are crazy but i leave them alone because they are teen agers and teen agers do what teen agers do. (I am talking about things like wearing sweaters all day when it is 90 degrees outside). anyway Kol Hakovod to you, i hope you start a trend that is catching. lots of luck!
commonsenseParticipantthanx for the reminder
commonsenseParticipanti thought this would have some menu ideas for yomtov, anyone have any good and easy ideas?
commonsenseParticipantthe reason we care is because all this luxus an indication of where our generation is holding. luxus in today’s times in not only for rich, it has become a necessity for all of us. buying a bugaboo when you live off your parents and uncle sam is a shonda. if you need programs you should not be able to afford a bugaboo and if you can then don’t take programs. we have such a ‘kumpt mir’ attitude and very few feel any responsibility to pay their own way. these clips are just the tip of a very large iceberg that portray the very wrong values that are pervading our society.
and again when i say all of us, i am using the general ‘all’. I know there are many among us who are not like this, they just happen to be the silent minority.
commonsenseParticipantthanx nfgo3 i needed that.
vet, loews and lowes are 2 different businesses. lowes sells home repair and loews i believe is a movie company.
thanx everyone for your support. I just want to reiterate that in this case there is no way anyone would have noticed until the store took inventory because the none of us realized that when the cashier scanned the paint it did not register. it did beep so we thought it was included. I only realized because i am the type that keeps a general running total in my head as i shop so when the total was too low i realized something was wrong. We had bought a bunch of stuff so unless the person checking the receipt really checked every item which they almost never do he would not have caught the mistake. even if he had it would have not been a chilul Hashem because the mistake was that of the computer and we were in no way at fault. Had we just walked away no one would have been the wiser and the cashier couldn’t have been blamed because the paint never registered in the computer so no one would have a clue when it vanished from the store and how.
commonsenseParticipantI agree I think the whole thing is ludicrous. what happened to cute and cheap for babies stuff instead of a show piece for the mother? Ithis past Pesach they were advertising all over Pesach sets (pillow case, matzah tash, etc.) with swarovski crystals. can anyone tell me why we need any crystals on our pillow cases and matzah tashen let alone swarovski, and when did it become the norm to spend over $500 for such a set? All you hear about is how people can’t pay their bills and schools are near to closing their doors, but money for pillowcases with swarovski crystals we find money for. (sorry this thread soooo feeds into my soapbox) (by ‘we all’ substitute many of us)
commonsenseParticipantthe cashier was not the least bit grateful. she just continued on as if nothing had happened. I don’t need her gratitude if i’m convinced I’m right but I’ve heard from other people who have boasted about the bargains they’ve gotten in similar situations and this time i was wondering if i was just being silly.
commonsenseParticipanti have noticed the same thing for years already. i just give up and try someone else.
commonsenseParticipantpersonally, i wish giving presents would be abolished as a custom. I find it a very costly proposition. I think i would rather not give and not get. it adds up to thousands of dollars a year and that is just talking about myself. i would come out ahead of the game if we would not give and not get.
commonsenseParticipantturpentine should not ruin the fabric unless it is very delicate just be sure to rinse it out right away after the you get the paint out
May 29, 2011 3:05 am at 3:05 am in reply to: what was your first memory and how old were you? #778604commonsenseParticipanti have a few vague memories of when i was about 2-3. i remember a summer day someone was sprinkling us with the hose and i remember laying on a lounge chair with my neighbor (i think i remember that we were playing being fancy ladies.)
commonsenseParticipantwow what terrific urls thanx
commonsenseParticipantto answer the original question, i think that in mir there are two Roshei Yeshiva, Reb Osher Berenbaum shlita, and Reb Osher Kalmanovitz shlita. if someone knows better please correct me.
commonsenseParticipantamish and hershey = lancaster Pa, I know a few people who go there for 3 day trips and love it enough to go back yearly.
commonsenseParticipantcrushed pills taste awful and putting it in applesauce does little to hide the taste. most kids would not be able to swallow it.
commonsenseParticipantyou’ll probably be a much better driver because you are starting out with the knowledge that driving can be dangerous. don’t let it stop you but channel that fear to make you a cautious aware driver.
commonsenseParticipantit is understood that by writing a name on the floor it will be stepped upon and erased. i don’t think it has any connection to the minhag of writing and erasing haman’s name. like itchesrulik i don’t think you have anything to worry about. you did not have any intention of erasing a name, the child happened to have written it in a bad spot. children do this all the time and this is the first time i have heard anyone worrying about it.
commonsenseParticipantthere are many times people do good deeds for their own purposes. I am not talking so much about your example but such as giving tzedakah at a chinese auction. very few people are participating because it is a tzedakah event but rather because they want to win the prizes and they have to give tzedakah anyway so they may as well do it this way, but ultimately they are still doing a mitzva. I am sure they get credit for the mitzva that was done even though it was done for personal gain.
commonsenseParticipantLOR
commonsenseParticipantMinyan not e/o follows up on return cards also could be the office was invited to the chuppah or simchas choson v’kallah so no returns.
Goq, really really really really invitations do get lost in the mail. Lately it has gotten so bad many many people hand deliver those they can, not to save on postage but because then they know it got there. I can’t imagine a/o inviting e/o in an office and leaving one person out. even if you couldn’t stand the person you’d still invite them because you would look so awful.
commonsenseParticipanti was laughing so hard at the tachas omed that i could’nt even tell it to my husband, i had to write it out.
commonsenseParticipanthi, what is vanish and can i get it in the states? I bought st. moritz to clean my stove from Pesach (did not work) and would like to dispose of it because I am afraid to have it in the house, but don’t want to just put it in the garbage because it might accidently hurt a garbage man, how can i dispose of it safely?
commonsenseParticipantI don’t think CB is so hard to get into anymore, also try Chofetz Chaim. Very strong in both learning and secular subjects (also hard to get into)
commonsenseParticipanti know someone in boro park if that helps
commonsenseParticipanti have the names of some wonderful tutors if u want and no I do not get a kickback, we were just in the same boat and tutoring before the regent made all the difference.
commonsenseParticipantunfortunately it is over by the time they are finished school.
commonsenseParticipantwhat time does it start, i was having the same questions
commonsenseParticipanttry milk munch or crazy bars. if i remember milky way correctly these are the cholov yisroel versions
commonsenseParticipantthat song is from one of the journey’s tapes, Abie Rotenberg. Lots of bracha and hatzlocha!
commonsenseParticipanthi i bought one for my husband at flohrs. they are on 13th ave bt 46th and 47th. it has a black metal frame and a wood looking surface. the surface tilts to diff angles and the height is adjustable. My husband seems to like it and it’s a great place to store the seforim that he and my son are currently using while they are not using them.
commonsenseParticipantto paraphrase another song,”..you can’t have one without the other..”
