commonsenseParticipantis it possible that on sunday the insurance agent wasn’t available and today very hard to reach as probably you are not the only one to be affected by the storm. not sure, but maybe give your landlord a chance.

October 30, 2011 8:37 am at 8:37 am in reply to: do you confront someone when they hurt you? #822704commonsenseParticipantzeeskite, this is probably no comfort but if you are ever in such a situation that is a premium time to give a brocha. I have read and heard that someone who is being embarrassed and gives a brocha to someone who needs a yeshua, at that time it is a huge segula for that brocha to be mekuyam.

October 27, 2011 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm in reply to: My $21000 sacrifice to get my daughter out of her misery #822092commonsenseParticipanti agree with yungerman that for most kids this would be the wrong decision as it is well known that many kids are miserable for a few months and then end up “loving” it as well as growing in many ways. however, only you and your wife know your daughter and if this is the right choice for her then kol hakovod.
October 27, 2011 3:37 am at 3:37 am in reply to: Temple Beth El in BP ought to become an Aish Kodesh type shul! #822325commonsenseParticipantI have a book of pictures of old time bp and I am pretty sure it has pictures of BE as it is being built.

October 25, 2011 8:13 am at 8:13 am in reply to: Temple Beth El in BP ought to become an Aish Kodesh type shul! #822293commonsenseParticipantsorry bpt, but I beg to differ, I think you are generalizing tremendously! Maybe the reason the next generation does not daven there is because in our frum world you are either right or left wing and therefore there is no middle ground anymore. the children of these mispallim are either more right wing or left wing than their parents and therefore do not fit in with the shul. in my relative’s case they raised their children so well that their children are more comfortable davening in many other boro park shuls, but they became that way because of the chinuch they received from their parents who still daven there.
October 24, 2011 5:30 am at 5:30 am in reply to: Temple Beth El in BP ought to become an Aish Kodesh type shul! #822267commonsenseParticipanti have relatives that have been davening there since they joined with Young Israel. They are very devoted to the shul and to the Rabbi. Although you may think you have a better use for the shul I think the regular mispallim would highly disagree with you and be very upset with your suggestions. You might think that it is a shame that it is empty and you have a better idea, but most of the people who are members are old time boro parkers from before boro park was so chassidish and this is a little bastion of their lives from the past. I do not think they are looking to be taken over by people who want to change them. Also they are very happy with their current Rabbi.
commonsenseParticipantit really depends on family dynamics. We grew up very close to one aunt and her kids, but B”H they are all married with families of their own and my aunt is very busy with her family so we are not very close anymore. I have a lot of good feelings to my aunt so I will call when it is appropriate but to be honest I don’t get the feeling that she is really interested in having a closer relationship.
October 18, 2011 9:47 pm at 9:47 pm in reply to: I (finally) found something new york city dwellers DON'T have…. #818286commonsenseParticipantI don’t know why everyone complains they can’t see the stars, on a clear night we see them just fine. If we happen to be outside on Shabbos when it is almost over, we watch as the stars become visible to know when Shabbos is over (even though we hold a later zman). I live in Brooklyn.

commonsenseParticipantbuy new like everyone else whose arovos look nice.
commonsenseParticipanthow much does a girl who plans to go to one of the jewish programs need to get?
October 10, 2011 11:09 pm at 11:09 pm in reply to: Dear Teacher, can you give us a little break?! #816702commonsenseParticipantI am with deiyezooger, I can’t stand when the kids have real hw over Yomtov, (including Yom Kippur). I want to know exactly when the hw is supposed to get done. I tend to do a few days worth at once. I know kids should review but it should be done on an incentive basis not as hw. making parent sign for each days hw over yomtov is unrealistic and unfair.
commonsenseParticipanti doubt you can get into bnos as staff if you were not a camper. I believe, chaviva is the new segula. Chaviva and Malka are new camps so they do not have a camper base to get staff from so they have to take girls who were not there as campers. girlzone is supposed to be an amazing experience and i think it is easy to get in as staff.
commonsenseParticipanti use a similar recipe to rocky mountain but i use a cup of oil instead of margarine and put either sprinkles or colorful chocolate chips in the mixture for some added taste and color. You can even mix this recipe with 2 forks and it comes out great.
commonsenseParticipantLee Turkey Farm, it’s a u-pick farm with a hay ride and a nice playground. Great for all ages.
commonsenseParticipantthey are selling a succah that is not so different then lego. Each panel is two interconnecting plastic pieces. I have never tried it but it looks easy.
commonsenseParticipantyour welcome, a g’mar chasima tova and easy fast to you too. (and to all of klal yisroel!)
commonsenseParticipantprincess, I think it is to ask your own questions.
commonsenseParticipantI didn’t see it the first two times, so thanx for reviving it.
commonsenseParticipant#1 talk to a dr. it might be dangerous for you to fast. try eating a lot of protein for a few days before. protein stays with you the longest and gives strength to fast. talk to rav and ask what to do, hatzlocha and a g’mar chasima tova!

commonsenseParticipanta mamim, maybe buses with 2 doors are better but in this lousy economy is this the place to spend money when so many people are struggling to survive. btw, many of those schools did not have big buses before and managed without. Also, there are thousands of kids who come home on city provided buses such as Atlantic Express, these companies do not get new buses unless they pay for them so all those kids are still riding on buses with one door and because the bus company has to pay for the buses, they will use the buses until they are used up.
Some politician makes himself look good by giving those buses but then the gov’t has to find a way to pay for everything and the gov’ts answer is to take it out of our pockets. did you hear that the tolls from ny to jersey went up to $12!!! it now costs about $40 to go roundtrip from brooklyn to lakewood, a 1hour and 15 min. drive. Every tax and expense goes up because the gov’t needs money. let them keep the buses and the renovated parks etc, and also keep their hands out of their pockets. If schools want school buses, they should pay for them themselves. (and yes, my children’s school did get one of those new buses.)
commonsenseParticipantLeider, I am aware of this but I hope to need the money in the nearer future and am afraid the rates will go up.
commonsenseParticipantThe question was not that we can’t pay our mortgage now, the question is that we are realistic and realize that as time goes on our expenses will grow (hopefully we will be zoche to make simchos AY”H!) and we do not have too many places to turn to supplement our income (no rich parents). the mortgage rates now are very low so we are thinking of taking a larger mortgage for 30 years. this will give us a sum of cash to use towards expenses or whatever else. We would end up with the same payment as before. The question is really whether to do it now when we are not desperate for the money to take advantage of the low interest rates, or wait until we really need the money when the rates might be higher. Realistically, unless we will a lottery this will probably be our only way to get the money we need. the barely making ends meet was to say that it is not really feasible for us to save and put away money.
September 22, 2011 12:05 am at 12:05 am in reply to: What is the meanest thing you've ever done? #812224commonsenseParticipantMommamia, I think you should stop beating yourself up about what you thought about your sister. you are human and you had a human reaction. It would have been mean if you had actually voiced it, which you did not. Most people have some reactions that are a little selfish to many situations. It’s fine as long as your seichel overcomes your initial reaction and the other person does not ever know what you initially felt. I actually give you credit for being Ma’avir al midosov (hard to spell in english) and not saying anything. It’s not easy for the siblings when one is sick.
commonsenseParticipantAYC, thanx for that site, it’s great!
commonsenseParticipantanyone?
commonsenseParticipantReal horror story! My neighbor had her cleaning lady die in her bed.
commonsenseParticipantYatzmich, I hope you’re joking. It shouldn’t need a Rov to tell you to return money to that is not yours if you can. Basic menchlichkeit should tell you that.
Mod-20, give him the benefit of the doubt, I think he states he did not realize the problem until he got his statement which was after the summer.
September 19, 2011 4:37 am at 4:37 am in reply to: REPLY TO mdd ABOUT CALLING GIRLS BY 1ST NAME #810731commonsenseParticipantRabbaim, excellent suggestion.
commonsenseParticipantone way to stop the madness would be to say no even though we benefit from the money. examples, the city or state just spent $5,000,000 on new school buses for non public schools. very nice to have but not necessary. Many parks have had millions of dollars allocated to be renovated in the next year or two. also nice but not neccessary. Title 1 recently gave out millions of dollars in books or software because probably had the money in the budget and didn’t want to give it back. nice but a huge waste of money. Let’s all say, NO! if everyone would agree to stop wasting the gov’ts money there would be a lot less of an issue. The answer everyone gives is “the money is allocated already and better it should go to us than someone else.” let’s unallocate the money and put it to use where it will help instead of get some votes.
September 18, 2011 6:06 am at 6:06 am in reply to: REPLY TO mdd ABOUT CALLING GIRLS BY 1ST NAME #810708commonsenseParticipantWhen I first started going to bungalow colonies, I felt very funny calling women who were old enough to be my mother by their first names, but when all the women are shmoozing, it is funny to call them Mrs. So and so and to be honest they don’t like it. When they are part of the circle they just want to be called by their first names, even by women who might be young enough to be their children. I think that every situation warrants common sense and insisting on doing what you think is right when it bothers someone else is not necessarily right.
September 18, 2011 5:27 am at 5:27 am in reply to: REPLY TO mdd ABOUT CALLING GIRLS BY 1ST NAME #810705commonsenseParticipanti would imagine it would be very off putting for an 18 year old girl to walk into an established working environment where everyone is called by their first names and ask to be called Miss So and so. My husband works for a very large place in Manhattan and everyone is called by their first names even people who are very high on the totem pole. they are very accommodating to frum people so many work there. He has worked with a number of frum girls and there has never been anything but a professional atmosphere there. Everyone treats everyone with professionalism.
commonsenseParticipantyou just forget about sleep. Who needs it anyway? Then you have another 4-5 hours a day to work with.
September 14, 2011 1:57 am at 1:57 am in reply to: Enforcing your Kasruth Chumras on others – Rant #809689commonsenseParticipantZahavasdad, #1 Mazel Tov, you should be zoche to make many simchos. #2 it seems to me the problem is not that the relative is being picky, it’s that it bothers you that they shouldn’t eat. Sometimes you have to include in the cost of the simcha the meals that people will not eat and just be happy that they came. You would have paid for their meals if they would have eaten it so just close your eyes and let them do what they want. Anyway, most caterers pack up the extra food and let you take it home so you can enjoy their meals at a later date. Stop worrying so much about their enjoying your simcha. Do what you can without stressing yourself and then let them worry about what they want to do.
commonsenseParticipantgetting a master’s is not cheap. you should evaluate whether the raise is worth what it costs to get the degree. Also there is a lot of work involved.
September 13, 2011 6:37 am at 6:37 am in reply to: I am the youngest on the CR anyone nearly 13 and a half?? #811309commonsenseParticipantnothing personal, but I’m with kylbdnr.
commonsenseParticipantif she told you to call and gave you her number then i am sure she means it. Just make sure to ask her when you call if it is a good time to speak as she may be busy with her family when you call.
commonsenseParticipantTums, the other parents probably aren’t aware there is any issue.
commonsenseParticipantasking for the 150 page notebook is ridiculous. Kids rarely finish up the 100 page notebooks that are easily available for cheap. It eats me up when they come home with those 150 sheet notebooks that are $2.89 and require a trip to a special store and they’ve only used 20 pages. teachers need to read over the school lists and evaluate what they will really use. I have no problem getting the exact supplies as long as they will be used.
commonsenseParticipantif i’m not mistaken i think tti has a men’s program. touro for sure has a men’s program.
commonsenseParticipantronsr, sounds painful!
commonsenseParticipantSara Schneirer and TTI both offer what you are looking for but i think that some of the classes are online in both programs.
commonsenseParticipantgolden, how about the school assigning seforim that are not available. for the second year in a row we had to run around to a bunch of different seforim stores because no one had the exact version of the sefer the Rebbi wanted. If the schools know they will be assigning specific versions of seforim they need to either sell them or make sure some stores are well stocked with what they want and let the parents know where to buy it. I know for a fact I was not the only one having a hard time with this.
commonsenseParticipantWell if someone does know of such a place I already have my degree but need continuing ed courses to maintain my certification and would love to know of easy online courses that would not require a ton of work.
