Without the “working boys” there’d be no “learning boys”. Or maybe there would be but they’d all be penniless. So yeah.

“Kayla1994: It is very possible to not gain weight in seminary, through either willpower, good genes, or some combination thereof.

Sure it’s possible…anything’s possible. Just insanely hard in seminary.

“In the end the aim bayit told her to eat properly or she would have to leave sem.”

K…it’s a mental disorder…you can’t just tell somebody who’s mentally ill to “stop it” or “snap out of it”…I mean seriously people

Girls gain weight in seminary. Period. Everybody gains, anywhere from 5-30 pounds. To a certain extent, it is under a girl’s control if she is going to gain weight or not and if she doesn’t overeat then it won’t happen. But it’s almost impossible, with the irregular hours, fattening food, lack of access to healthy foods,no gym, etc. I don’t think anybody who hasn’t experienced this can really understand how stressful and frustrating it is to suddenly be gaining a ton of weight when you’ve never in your life struggled with your weight, and not being able to fit into your clothes and not even being able to BUY new clothes. It’s more than just annoying, it’s actually scary. And girls are facing so much pressure – even from their own mothers (which is a whole separate issue) – to lose weight for shidduchim. But forget about the pressure – if even for herself and her own self-esteem and body image, a girl will resort to desperate measures to get skinny. Especially a girl who was skinny when she left to seminary and is facing the embarrassment of coming home with a totally different body. So yes, anorexia/bulimia is a big problem. But the alternative is pretty bad too.

I didn’t read all of the posts in this thread but um why on earth would anybody have an issue with dating a Hatzolah guy. I definitely wouldn’t.

“They got pretty strict on the dress code and other stuff, not sure what you’re talking about that they forget, they really don’t.”

What I meant was that in the beginning of the year they are pretty strict about a lot of stuff and as the year goes on they let a lot of thing slide. At least in my year that’s what happened.

Cis – mm hm…it’s all a matter of opinion. I honestly did not mean to come off as negative; it is a great place. But those are my opinions on the dorm conditions 🙂

the dorms are really not that bad as dorms go, at first I was kinda scarred cuz the rooms are pretty cramped and i didn’t have space for my stuff, but you really can get used to anything. It’s very clean – they have an ozeret every day – which is a big plus. always enough showers/bathrooms. and regarding the clothes everyone’s different; personally i can’t stand blouses so i changed every day after class. there’s lots of free time (no night classes) so bring tons of ordinary clothes. and however many clothes you think you’re gonna need, pack double. you’re gonna be wearing the same stuff for a whole year and you’ll see how sick of them you get. Shabbos clothes also – people tell you you don’t need so many – THIS IS A LIE.

unknown123 – nope. Nobody lives there. It’s actually only slightly more populated than a desert island. In fact the only place in the world where people actually live is the tri-state area. And perhaps Chicago

hashtag every year is different re stringency in uniform rules – last year nobody cared what color/pattern sweater you were wearing and everybody showed up in slinky skirts. then at the end of the year they cracked down. it depends on the staffs’ individual and collective moods.

The uniform is pretty chill. You need to wear a button-down shirt with a collar, and color/pattern. Officially only solid dark color sweaters/shirts over that, but at a certain point in the year nobody cares any more. Dark pleated skirts, short or long (although if your skirt’s too short you will probably get “skirted”), any shoes. They don’t care about your makeup or jewelry.

Electronics: reaaalllly strict. Anybody found with a smartphone/iPod touch etc. is in major trouble.

Curfew: officially 10:15 but if you need late curfew you just call an aim habayit and ask. They’ll usually give you till 12 depending on your reputation/the reason/which aim habayit you’re talking to. In the beginning of the year they are really into curfew but at a certain point it’s pretty much a free-for-all.

Dorm: on a scale of 1-10 I’d put the conditions at a 6. You learn to live with it. 3 floors, not including the ground floor where the kitchen and lounge/library is. Always enough showers/bathrooms which is a big plus. 4-6 girls a room, each girl gets a filing cabinet and a big drawer for their stuff. Bunkbeds. There is a lounge/library downstairs where you can chill and there are hammocks on the roof, which is cool. The food is awesome and insanely fattening.
