Required, as in, show up in a blue shirt enough times, your out for blatantly violating policy? That will be the day!

Which ones? So far, only two have been named. One in Brooklyn, and one in Lakewood. If “many yeshivos” have this white shirt only policy, who are they? Please name them.

“Sarah Imenu went inside and did not wish to interact with or even be seen by the guests.”

Yet Avraham Avinu did not refrain from leaving his door open for guests.

So, are we to conclude that since we are not avram avinu we should abandon hachnosas orchim? Or perhaps, we should tell our wives to lock themselves in the kitchen for the duration of time the male guests are in the house? Or, perhaps we are to conclude that we should arrange for separate seating when having company?

I have a difficult time believing that there can be ANY disagreement what R” Moshe Z’ls position is about this when R’ Dovid and R’ Reuvevn Shlita are alive, baruch hashem ad meah viesrim, to ask. Would anyone doubt their answer as not accurate (whatever that answer may be)? Would anyone accuse them of an agenda?

****”What is the correct way to deal with a child who, unfortunately, does not take the inyan of wearing a hat and jacket seriously.”****

Has anyone ever explained “the inyan” of wearing a hat and jacket during davening?

****”Both during davening and in general”****

Is there an “inyan” to wear a hat and jacket “in general”?

****”There is a fear that this lack of seriousness will lead to worse things down the road, loy oleynu.”****

If this is your concern, not wearing a hat and jacket is the least of your problems with this boy. Does he take tefilla seriously? Does he take YOU seriously?

Even amongst chassidim, arent the styles different? Is the stamar hat (no idea what its called) the same as one worn by a bobover? streimel, spudik, hats for chabad. white socks, black socks (and no socks for the bahamian chassidim), knickers for some pants for others. boots for the skverer chassidim shoes for everyone else (except the Bahamians who wear flip flops). the only similarity (and there are many exceptions here to) are the colors, black and white, for the most part.

The kohein Gadol wore gold and blue (rebbes bekeshes are these colors to – and no, I am not trying to sound like dr seuss), why are these colors off limits to yeshiva bachurim?

So, the YWN research comittee has come back with only TWO yeshivos that have a “white shirt only” policy. Why is it then, that almost every boy in every yeshiva (even those where presumably there is no such policy) wears a white shirt? Why dont the other yeshivos have such a policy? If it is so pashut that a policy is not necessary, why did these two Yeshivos institute such policies?

Of course it isnt. Whats important is…..

. The name of the yeshiva

. The color of his shirt

. That he stopped going to sleepaway camp and started in “learning camp” no later than 9 years old.

    I can picture it now……

    Hi, I’m Chavi….

    Hiiii Chaaavi.

Recently, I must confess, I started wearing shells under my top. At first, it was ok because the spaghetti straps were pas yisroel, kemach yashan exclusively, but then, I started slipping, I used Ronzoni, even with the OU, it started bothering me…

Go on Chavi, let it all out.

Well, the other day, I really slipped, I wore a shell that wasn’t black. I felt horrible, like I was betraying all four Imahos Hakedoshos at the same time. I tried to justify to myself that “it was only chocolate macaroon dark brown”, but I knew it was only my yetzer hara.

Oooohhhh Chaaavi, we really feel for you. We’re here for you every step of the way. We will come to your house tonight and empty out those closets so the temptation to wear anything other than black canvas tents never tempts you again.

Oh, thank you ladies. Your the best. Who is next?

    Hi, I’m Faigy.

    Hiiiii Faaaaiiigy….

Just the other day, I wore shoes that had, gasp, a heel that measured approximately 1/4 of an inch. How couldI wear such untzniusdik spikes!?!?….

Me personal opinion is that if you can afford $3,000 suits, buy them. If going into debt to buy a $3,000 suit to massage your ego is something you want to do, go ahead, as dumb as it is, go for it, just dont go running to Tomchei Shabbos to help with challos (this is NOT to say that every tzedaka should start questioning how much money people spend on food and clothing, I’m only talking about the person buying the clothing/jewlery and their attitude towards it).

A $5 shirt or a $555 shirt worn just to snub your nose at the next person is just plain horrible middos.

You cant legislate seichel or middos. If people want to act stupidly, you cant help it. If people have horrible middos you cant do much except offer to learn Mesilas Yesharim with them.

Walmarts own private label is a label nonetheless. Where do we draw the line? Tommy Hilfiger good, Ralph Lauren no good? The $125 Jos. A Banks tie no good, the $24 JosephLea tie is good? Why is Mr. Banks’ label any worse than JosephLea, or Walmart?

Talking during davening. Wasnt a special Mi Shebaeirach composed for those who dont talk during davening, composed after Tach vTat by the Tosfos Yom Tov? Am I confusing several things?

Regarding learning during davening. How would it look to people if in the middle of Seder someone walked up to the Bimah and started davening. Why is it any more acceptable if in the middle of Tefilla someone stands near the Bima looking into a gemara. There is a time for tefilla and a time for learning. Why do we try and “chap” both at the same time.

About a year ago I heard repeated in the name of R” Chaim Kanievsky (I have no way to verify this statement, and apologies o the Rav if he never said it) that being Maaver Sedrah during chazoras HaShatz is a Mitzvah Habaa BiAveirah.

“You never find a SHUT sefer that doesn’t do that.”

The local Rav is not a SHuT Sefer. All SHuT seforim present the thought process, the analysis of all sugyos and sources and the outcome of that analysis. If that is what you want, dont ask the shayla, learn through the sugya yourself and discuss it with your chaverim

Most Poskim dont have time for “why” or “what about the Pri Migadim” or “isn’t there a shita to the contrary?”. They have time to answer shaylos. If you respect the Ravs Daas Torah then also respect his time and certainly his dignity by not double checking and second guessing everything he says.

    MW13.

Its really a game of semantics and how one decides to interpret your comment.

When you write “those of us who disagree with rav schorr” it implies that YOU disagree with him. You then write it is because of your Rav.

In short, YOU are not disagreeing with him. Your RAV does.

Hopefully that will make Joseph happy. Unless he starts playing the “this Rav is bigger than that Rav” game.

“If virtually all frum girls are torah-educated and versed in chumash, Rashi, Rambam, and other varied Jewish subject matter, including halachos, why aren’t they all dressing within normative tznius guidelines – even within the spirit of halachah?”

Perhaps this is the problem. Instead of making sure girls are up all night studying for tests that ensure their fluency in Rambam and other subject matter and instead schools taught hilchos tznius and basic hashkafa, girls would know what is and what is not considered proper according to halacha and will also know how to behave within the spirit of the halacha.

More girls today know more Rambans than many of the Rambans own talmidim and many bachurim know more R’ Chaims than most of the gedolim who lived in Brisk yet we are in a situation where we are discussing the fact that females dont dress according to halacha and men are doing little to nothing to stop it.

If Rav Schorr would have a policy that said “you can only daven in my beis medrash if you wear a hat and jacket” (he doesn’t) would anyone make ridiculuos statements about putting people in cherem or not davening at all? Every Rav can make takanos for their Bais Medrash, dont like it, go elsewhere.

OK. Admittedy, Polyester will take about 50 years to “fall apart”. On the other hand, many natural fibers decompose just as quickly (if not faster) than Linen. Cotton and Wool for example. With that said, is there an inyan for tachrichim to “fall apart”. “El Afar Tashuvu” is said about Adam, not the clothes he is buried in.

I was in a shteeble where the chazzan was tied to a plank of wood, with the intent of takih him down to and setting him afloat in the mikvah. Lucky for the shaliach tzibbur the Rebbe threatened to ban those who continued the stunt from the shteeble.

Re: Perfume. As a male, I do not wear perfume, but I do wear cologne. I like the way it smells. I personaly prefer to smell like Drakkar then Right Guard Sport. I dont bathe in it, but a small dab works just fine. I would imagine a female appreciates the nice smell of perfume. She doesnt have to bathe in it so that people for 400 yards around her gag on the smell, a small shpritz or dab doesnt seem inappropriate at any time.

MyBat. Did Rav Schorr say dont learn? You can go next door to Ohr Yitzchak and learn in their Beis Medrash. You can walk a few blocks to Chaim Berlin, the Laewood Minyan, Landaus and dozens of other Battei Medrash in the area. Off the derech? More like off the wall.

I think Rav Schorr could determine any policy he wants to for his beis medrash/shul. If you dont agree with him or like his policies, go daven/learn elsewhere.there are many other places to daven/learn in Flatbush.

Most of the finger pointing has been at the females of the community. What about the males? If husbands would stop their wives from dressing a certain way, if fathers would not pay for clothes that was not appropriate for their daughters, if the community as a whole would not shop in stores that sold clothing that was in clear violation of halacha, then things would change. Until then….

To illustrate just how far we have sunk as a community in this regard, a clothing store on a popular thoroughfare in flatbush displayed skirts in their window, that clearly did not cover the knees of the mannequin. The cynics will say, “well mannequins are not obligated to follows the laws of tznius”. Those who choose to keep their heards out of the sand, will realice the statement the store owner is making with the window display. Yet, people happily shop in the store further encouraging the store owner. its a mindset, and it has to change.

I worked for a non jewish company that strictly enforced its dress code. Granted, their standards were well short of halacha, but they were careful to enforce the standards they did have. To this day, i have not forgotten the scene, where a manager went with a tape measure over to one employee took out a tape measure and determined that her skirt violated company policy that skirts could not be more than one inch above the knee. They sent her home to change. Everyone else, got the message and didnt push the envelope.

    1. Isnt minhag more chamur that din in some regards (i forget how it is brought down).

    2. The source for eating in succah s”a is the gemara.

    3. The mechaber brings down the minhag of those who only eat in succah during s”a day, but doesnt like the minhag. The nosei keilim explain the reasons for the various minhagim.

    4. Several years ago i was a guest in a “5 towns” shul that did hakafos on s”a at night (i presume during the day to, but wasnt there). The rav announced all were obligated to stay for hakafos unless they were going home to eat in their succah. He wasnt saying it as a definitive psak, but was telling the mispallelim that they cant have it both ways. Either they are chassidish and their minhag is hakafos yes, succah no, or hakafos no, succah yes.

    5. How does one not have a minhag regarding succah on s”a? The mechaber rules one should eat in the succah. Im not chassidish, and dont know the source for the minhag, but if your not chassidish and definitively do not have a minhag not to eat in the succah, why arent you following the psak of shulchan aruch?

Let me try and rephrase what i wrote in a manner that will satisfy even the most PC members of society.

I had suggested that the next time one is headed to Queens for a mitzvah that they travel through a certain section of Brooklyn whose primary residents are of a certain ethnic background and while stopped at a red light, to open the window all the way, and yell something derogatory about said ethnic group. Since it was stated that someone on their way to do a mitzvah wont come to harm. I had rhetoricly asked if this is what chazal had in mind when they said this.
