Those who feel Bloomberg somehow got away with something, must remember, he did not sign a law that appoints him a mayor for a 3rd term. He signed a bill tha says he can RUN for a 3rd term. You have every right to vote against him.

Is this “abomination” included in the Sheva Mitzvos? If it is, it is irrelevant, according to the torah, how/where speaker quinn worships.

What is a bachur supposed to do when his yeshiva prepares garbage cans all over the building so a shikkur doesnt have far to run when he has to puke his guts out? He has a haskama from his own yeshiva, that sometimes demands that he be back in yeshiva (where else can he have true simchas hatorah, but in the place he learns it, the argument goes) that it is ok to to get so drunk that they prepare cans all over the building for him to puke his guts into.

What is he supposed to do when he sees his father and all his fathers buddies downing shot, after shot on simchas torah?

Wake up adults. We have to set an example for our children. Unfortunately, we sometimes set the wrong one.

If the Avos approached shidduchim the way we do, how is it that Yitzchak married Rivka? Her brother was “off the derech”, her father chazal say had no qualms about murdering someone. How did rivka marry Yitzchak? Her brother eisav was surely not from the best bachurim in the yeshiva. Yackov didnt marry any great yichus. moshe married the daughter of an ex galach.

I guess one will counter that since both sides (to borrow a term used here) “interesting” they settled on their respective spouses.

I wasnt aware that it was merely a chumra (religiously stringent) to have proper kavod and act in a proper manner in a beis knesses/beis midrash.

So now refraining from getting drunk and barfing all over the shul is merely a chumra? Or is biting your tongue while it happens the chumra? I dont like to be called a Kanoi, if the chumra is the former, perhaps I will engage it that practice as well.

I think something got lost in the translation. I have no idea what your neighborhood does or does not do. The point I was trying to make (and obviously did not do a very good job at that) is that we know Bein Hazmanim has started when we see signs that there will also be a 9am minyan for shachris and we know bein hazmanim is coming to an end when we see the sign that posts the last day of said minyan.

It is precisely because of this attitude towards drinking that a mother in my neighborhood refused to allow her son (a 20 year old) to go back to yeshiva for simchas torah. Despite all the arguments put forth by his rebbeim.

When people in their 30s want to know how someone spent their summers as a teenager, it tells me they are not interested in getting married or looking for excuses. Who cares where someone went to camp, seminary or high school when they are now 34 years old! People change over the course of a year, let alone 15!

If people would stop asking stupid quesitons prior to going out we wouldnt have a “crisis”.

Huh? Is the custom barbaric? Seems to me it is how some people go about fulfilling this custom that needs changing, not the actual custom itself.

Personally, I go to a slaughterhouse that brings in a shochet and do my kapparos right there. (For what it’s worth – According to the signs on the wall, the facility meets governmental standards for animal health and safety.)

Actually the Teshuva addresses social dating, but in addressing social dating R’ Moshe covers the Lav of Lo Sikrivu. I’m not asking you to believe me. All I am asking, if you have this wish to jump down someones throat, is to READ the teshuva prior to doing so.

Did I mention the color of clothing? You infered that from my message. The very thing you are all over me about, you are guilty of.

Mariner. Dont make assumptions about a Teshuva of R’Moshe Z’l without having seen it. When I get home later today, I will bli neder get the exact siman of the teshuva. He discusses at length the general Lav of Lo Sikrivu Ligalos Ervah and all it entails in a very practical day to day setting and how it applies to both males and females. The Teshuva is found in the Yad Moshe index under “social dating” because that was the subject of the specific question asked, however the answer covers that, and a lot more.

I think a lot can be learned by what he says. I am not concerned about what he does not say or what people want to infer or not infer.

According to Rashi “Kedoshim Tiyhu” is an all encompassing “Assay” regarding Arayos.

According to the Rambam the Lav of “Lo Sikrivu Ligalos Ervah” is all encompassing as well. I suppose Lifnei Iver would apply here as well.

R’ Moshe Z’L Paskened Limaaseh that “social dating” even when all parties are properly dressed, falls under Lo Sikrivu Ligalos Ervha. Acting and dressing in “untsniusdik manner” cant be far behind, can it?

This entire thread is as ridiculous as they come. If this is a legitimate Shayla, it should be addressed to a Rav, not a bunch of anonymous posters (me included) who may, or may not be fluent in halacha. Whatever happened to “Asay Licha Rav”?

Do people have a Rav any more? Are they waiting for a Kol Koreh on the matter? 🙂

Regarding the actual Shayla. Melacha on Chol Hamoded is generally assur unless a number of specific conditions are met. I am not a Rav or a Posek to tell anyone how their specifics work out according to halacha, however I can say this, “Melacha” has nothing to do with an office. It would be the same Melacha if done in your basement or out in the backyard. Unless of course one of the coonsiderations was doing the melacha “bitzinah”.

I know this is not an easy thing to do, it will require a lot of planning and arranging and coordinating. If parents are unhappy with the way their yeshivos are educating their children, and by this I am specifically referring to the HASHKAFOS of the yeshiva, which include rejecting prospective students for stupid reasons, or pressure from a few parents, why not take the kids home from school for english classes (of course those yeshivos that dont teach english – and I can tell you what an avla that is as having worked as a guidance counselor for a program offering Associate Degrees to heimishe yidden as a means to earning a parnassha and supporting their families, but that is for a different topic, different subject, different time) for several days. You can be sure the silence in the classrooms will be deafening. You can be sure the administrators of these yeshivos will want to get to the bottom of whatever it is that is bothering the parent body. Yo can be sure the word on the street about that yeshiva (and there will be all sorts of misinformation flowing) will be enough to force the hands of any administrator.

I think how much time and energy, those who complain about yeshivos and their administration, are willing to commit to resolving these issues will say a lot oabout how much they really care or they are just blowing a lot of hot air.

Who REALLY fosters the elitist attitude? Is it the mechanchim/administration or the parent body (perhaps the powerful minority of the parent body) that sets a standard and then holds the administration responsible for meeting thsoe standards?

It is very easy to blame Rabbonim, Administrators and the like, I think everyone should make their own chashbon hanefesh prior to pointing fingers.

My son was turned down for NURSERY (they have a PRE kindergarten class) in a major Brooklyn Yeshiva because someone told the pre-school director that we had a television in the house. Did it matter that I flat out denied having one? Did it matter that I invited the decision makers to come to my apartment, any time of the day or night, unnannounced, to verify the claim against my wife and I? At first it did not, but because we made such a racket (not that we would have sent our son to the yeshiva at that point anyway, it was the principle of the matter at that point) someone actually made an attempt to verify the claim that we had a TV. Turns out that someone who ONCE KNEW US TWO YEARS PRIOR told them we had a TV. Guess what, we DID. We also came to a decision that we did not want one in our home at a later point. This “someone” was a “knacker” in the school who did not want their child in the same class as ours and made this claim despite not knowing whether it was true or not. The administration felt compelled to kowtow to their wishes, despite not knowing if it was true.

In truth both sides are to blame in my case, but who is setting the standards for the hanhala to uphold, the hanhala or overzealous parents?

I think the larger problem is that there is a need to “hang out”. Hanging out implies, nothing else to do. We should find things for these teens to do. I dont claim to have the answer (or any answer, for that matter), but I dont think it would be a bad idea to understand why there is a need to “hang out” to begin with.

Rabbi: The words to the original song can be found on the web, if one wanted to find it. When you see the original words, it really doesnt matter how “pure” one makes it. If you know the original, you wouldnt want to sing ANY words of tehillim to that tune.

    Others:

The bashing of individual singers, mentioning them by name, and calling them all sorts of nasty things is as least as assur as the music they claim is assur. Was a heter obtained to name an individual and drag his name though the mud?

You dont like the music of an individual? His (her if your a woman) voice? His tunes? The music chosen to accompany the tune? The lyrics. The chosen venues for performing? Fine. Dont like it, dont buy it and dont listen to it. To drag the name of someone who isnt even alive through the mud, is disgusting, at best and probably violates numerous halachos of lashon hara.

The short answer. You are not allowed to do your own things while on your employers time. If you dont have so much free time, speak to your manager about getting you more responsibilities, along with a salary increase that comes along with the increased responsibility.

Anything else, is outright theft on your part, unless they sanction downtime and let you learn, eat, browse the web, shmooze on the phone etc…

Back to MUSIC for just a moment (it is the subject of this thread). Did anyone happen to listen to JM in the AM this morning? At approx 6:45 a song was played that made me turn off my radio. For those who remember the J. Geils Band from the 20-30 years ago and their most popular song “Angel”, did it bother you to hear the exact song sung to the words “hodu lahashem ki tov”.

Before I get attacked by the holier than though crowd for knowing who this band is, or what their popular song was, let me add that quite a few people were humming along to the tune as they heard it on the radio this morning shopping in the store that was playing the show. Probably plenty more enjoyed the song as they listened to the web archives while not knowing the source for the song.

HOlier than though crowd, who will attack me for knowing of this band and their music, do you have any issues with a popular radio host playing these types of songs? Do you have any issues with “heimishe” people who never heard of the original band or their music listening to this music and enjoying it? I think I read here “mitzvah habaah biaveria….” from a member of this crowd.

    Just wondering what people think.

Personally, because I know the origin of the song and the original words, I couldnt bear to listen to the tune sung to a portion of Hallel.

Dont assume. To quote someone famous (but will leave him nameless, because it will lead to a red herring of a topic) “never assume, because when you assume you make an A*S out of U and ME”. There are many informational signs in spanish throughout Sullivan County, including South Fallsburg.

The answer to why the sign was printed in english and yiddish, according to a frum Yid who lives there all year is that the impression of the locals is that the “hasidics” are litterbugs. Right or wrong, is irrelevant right now. The fact is that is their impression and we should be making a better impression.

in reply to: Chillul Hashem & Embarrassment! #623169

It is one thing to be (rightfully so) embarrassed when a YID who should know better acts a certain way. It is quite another to whitewash all Jews of a location (in this case Lakewood) as behaving the same way. I am willing to bet, that had you been on line at a pharmacy in Walla Walla Washington, you would not have seen a yid cause a chillul Hashem. You were in Lakewood, NJ where I would venture a guess that 50% of the population are frum Yidden (it really is a guess, I have absolutely no idea). Yes, there are yidden who dont always act the way they should, but dont generalize their behavior and then to top it all off “no wonder THEY hate us”. Surely, there are some of “them” whose interaction with yidden is limited so scenes such as these cause them to form opinions, but it is not why many hate us.

Nameless. There are plenty of Hispanics in South Fallsburg. They live there all year too. Why dont they need the subtle reminders that the yiddish speakers do? Is their English comprehension worse than those who speak yiddish? Lets call a spade, a spade.

While the name of this thread is disgusting, at best, the point raised is certainly a valid one.

I spent the summer in South Fallsburg. The small local park has a do not litter sign written in 2 languages. English and yiddish

The local court house also has a large sign about littering. This sign too is in 2 languages, english and yiddish.

Who said teenagers must have a cell phone to begin with? If parents feel that for security reasons their teens must have a phone, it is possible to get a plan that does not allow text messages or anything else, except voice calling, for that matter. As a parent, if I would give my teen a “toy” (in this case phone with all sorts of features) how can I not anticipate that he would use it? Perhaps parents should remove their heads from wherever it is head in the sand, has his/her head too.
