I have to admit that the subject of this thread threw me for a loop. I was sure it referred to a Kvittel one gives when going to a Rebbe. 🙂
I have heard that the idea of playing cards is related to “leil nittel” when there are those who have a minhag not to learn (although, I suppose any batlan who spends his days in Vegas can claim he is super machmir and observes this minhag year round!) although I have no idea how the minhag of playing cards evolved. Why didnt everyone just stay home and read a good book if they werent going out to learn?
December 12, 2008 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm in reply to: Television: A Cry of Anguish and Appeal to Our Jewish Brethren 📺 #1192777jphoneMemberLets not blur the lines here. The content that is available on television these days is certainly not what we want in our homes and surely this is what the gedolim then and now do not want in our homes. This content surely comes out of a TV, it can be found on the web and can be accessed via a cell phone these days. It can be viewed on an Ipod, DVD player and heard on the radio. For those who cant excercise any self control, perhaps not owning these devices is th ebest way to go. Perhaps there are those who dont want to put themselves in a situation where they want to tempt themselves. Also, great. Just dont let this degenerate into a “holier than thou” discussion about who put themselves into what situation, and when, where, why and how.

I should remined everyone that 2 weeks ago, when all anyone could think of was the murder victoms (unconfirmed at the time) in Mumbai, YWN embedded live feeds from India. It was CNN India, otherwise known as (Cable) Television. Technology is not inherently bad. It is how you use it and what you use it for.
jphoneMemberNobody ever answered the basic question of WHY the average mesivta bachur needs a cell phone to begin with? Who are they calling? Who are they expecting calls from?
jphoneMember“wheres the obedience school located in here or in E”Y”
Lots of wonderful mosdos here, but my dog is ashamed because so many of her classmates are going to e”y for “sem”. Its a wonderful mosad, stephen king even wrote about it in his book “pet sem-etary”.
jphoneMemberThe notion that “Working = Rich” is so silly, that if it wasnt so serious an error it would be funny.
jphoneMemberIf halacha allowed Jews to own dogs, would it be ok to give them a cellphone? Would texting have to be blocked? If one wanted to send their dog to obedience school, what type of school should it be, hashkafa wise? Most importantly, when the time came, what type of shidduch should one do for their dog? Would it matter if the owner fed it from a paper or plastic bowl on shabbos?
jphoneMemberLets be realistic. A child can rob his/her parents blind if they really wanted to. Do we believe our children would stoop to such levels?
Yes, it is possible to overhear (I wont say eavesdrop) a conversation. It is possible to go through someones drawers while they are sleeping. Anything is possible. Do we think so poorly of our own children? 🙂
December 9, 2008 8:39 pm at 8:39 pm in reply to: Has Everyone Stopped Commenting Because of The CR? #652878jphoneMemberIts easier and more comfortable to discuss something unimportant, like who is the YWN moderator, bash people who dont hold to the same standards as you (chalv stam thread), whine on and on about a shidduch crisis and many other ridiculous topics then it is to deal with real life issues.
Look at the readers write section of a popular yeshivishe paper. The same inane topics get rehashed again and again. Very little substance, lots of nonsense.

jphoneMember1: Why does a mesivta bachur need a cell phone? Who does he have to call? When?
2: It is EASY to have texting turned off on a plan and very difficult to get turned back on. Same with web access. Just because the phone is enabled with the technology it does not mean that all plans MUST allow the service. By default they do, because the average consumer wnats these features. In the event you dont want them, they can be turned off at the network level and has been stated, is pretty difficult to turn back on. Of course, if your son pays for his own plan and is listed as the owner and he is the one who does all the speaking with customer service, all bets are off.
3: Believe it or not, payphones work just as well. You can carry change or a prepaid calling card foe those occassions a phone call is necessary. I have a hard time believing a yeshiva office would not let a bachur use the phone it there was a legitimate reason for it. If he was in the street, there are payphones around. Unless you are in a horrible neighborhood where these things tend to be vandalized, you should have no such problems. Why would a bachur be in such a neighborhood?
jphoneMemberMJoe. You certainly are entitled to your opinion about any school. People are entitled to disagree with you. Disagreeing does not equal sticking ones head on the sand. On the other hand, rants about a particular school say something about the one ranting. I dont know you, and dont know anything about the school you railed against. I do know that you come off looking a lot worse then the school.
jphoneMemberMosheJoe. Thank you for twisting what I wrote to suit your needs.
jphoneMemberWait. I thought I was YWModerator-99.
jphoneMemberMy suggestion. Make an appointment to meet with the principal, director or whoever of whatever school you may be interested in. It is enrollment season. This is the time of the year when schools EXPECT people to call and ask questions. Why ask an anonymous person who might have a personal vendetta against a particular school, or worse, never heard of it, but have nothing better to do with their lives then say something negative about anyone or anything. Call the school. Ask parents. Ask kids in the school. Stand outside the school by dismisal one day and ask to your hearts content. Then go and evaluate the answers and weight them against your expectations.
jphoneMember“Dating parent or girls?”
I suppose part of thee equation has to be, how much of their money are you looking for?
December 1, 2008 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm in reply to: Talking With Members of The Opposite Gender #662940jphoneMemberThese are the words of the message that began this thread:
“After reading through a number of threads, it has become apparent that a number of individuals (bloggers) maintain that there is an issur of holding conversation with a (unrelated) member of the opposite gender.” (Yes, I did not include the question about “speaking” in a blog room, intentionally)
. Has anyone ever gone shopping (bakery, grocery, bank, gas station, clothing store – the list is endless) and had to speak with a member of the opposite gender?
. Has anyone ever called the customer service of any company and had a member of the opposite gender answer their call?
Has any Rav, anywhere, stated it is assur for a man to order a loaf of bread from a member of the opposite gender or for a woman to buy gas if she had to speak with a member of the opposite gender?
The Mishna in Avos says “Al Tarbe SICHA im Isha”, there is a difference between Sicha and Dibbur. See the Sfas Emes on this mishna.
I would add, the mishna says “Syag Lachachma Shtika”, perhaps that includes YWN chatroom, even if it IS annonymous.
jphoneMemberIn other words. If anyone calls you looking for information about a prospective shidduch, never used the term heimish, yeshivish, litvish or out of townish, everyone has their own interpretation and use for the word. 🙂
jphoneMemberReading some other threads here, I would say, it isnt so important what type of Kugel you eat, so long as it is heimish.
jphoneMemberSo, heimish = homey or homely (depending if we were referring to a kugel or a teenager).
November 27, 2008 5:42 am at 5:42 am in reply to: Is a Boy Looking to Date a Girl or a Chavrusah? #1217849jphoneMemberRe: Talking to girls. The Sfas Emes says a nice pshat on the mishna “Al Tarbe Sicha Im Isha”. This is not the proper forum to discuss the mishna and it would certainly be appropriate for those who can, to look it up themselves, to see for themselves what he says instead of hearing how I learn the SE.
jphoneMemberThis comment is addressed to this specific question posed previously.
“Just curious to know why a Talmid Chochom is a better choice than ra ‘Klall doer’.
Dont forget, the girl takes what she sees at home and because middos are a priority for a girl, she would make a better wife with an example like that. If her father knows how to learn, its a wonderful thing, but how will that benefit her as a wife and mother??”
The girl has a mother too. Surely she would learn from her mother how to appreciate a Talmid chacham (or a klal doer) and how to help her husband continue to grow in learning (or klal doing). If you want to be a talmid chacham then marry the daughter of whoever it is, perhaps even Joe the Plumber, that will help you reach that goal. If you want to be a klal doer, marry whoever it is that will help you reach your full potential. If you want to be a plumber, marry the one that will help you reach that potential as well.
jphoneMemberCould you send your kids anywhere without being worried about something?
November 27, 2008 5:08 am at 5:08 am in reply to: Talking With Members of The Opposite Gender #662923jphoneMemberI’m not accusing anyone of being something different than what they imply. All I’m saying is take everything with a grain of salt. A screen name might imply something exactly the opposite of what someone really is, it might be right on the money and it might be the first bit of nonesense that popped into someones head when looking for a screen name.
jphoneMemberI always thought heimish was a nice way of calling someone an animal, kind of slang for “biheimish”. Thats until I saw heimish kokosh cake, heimish kugel and heimish taxi service. Then I figured, who cares. Since a poll of 100 people will yield 100 different answers, use it however you want and let people try and figure out what you mean.
November 27, 2008 4:47 am at 4:47 am in reply to: Talking With Members of The Opposite Gender #662921jphoneMemberSince blogging is totally anonymous, for all we know Bais Yackov Maydel is really a 48 year old married father of 6. Or a 17 year old boy. For all you know, I’m Bais Yackov Maydel. The point is, take anything and everything you read on a site where posters are totally anonymous with a very large grain of salt.

November 25, 2008 11:05 pm at 11:05 pm in reply to: Is a Boy Looking to Date a Girl or a Chavrusah? #1217830jphoneMemberNow that the thread has come this far, lets take it full circle.
So, is a boy looking to date a girl or a chavrusa?
Lets go one step further. Does a boy want to marry a a girl, or a chavrusah?
While were at it. Would a boy want a girl for a chavrusah?
November 25, 2008 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm in reply to: Is a Boy Looking to Date a Girl or a Chavrusah? #1217812jphoneMemberI know its not Adar, but this entire thread (addmittedly I have not read 90% of the posts) got to me to thinking. We could do away with the shidduch crisis if we allowed guys to learn with girls and date chavrusas. The 1st day of zman “tumult” would probably yield lots of dates and many shidduchim. I can see it now. “Your style of learning is not for me, but you are.” (I wonder if YWN would still allow pictures of the tumult to be posted)
Reminds me a little of the Misnhe that described Tu B’Av.
jphoneMemberChacham. You answered my question. Some phones have gotten so caught up in all the bells and whistles, that the manufacturers have forgotten that they still have to used to place phone calls.
jphoneMemberBogen: People have a Rav who they ask their shailos to. Most people never asked their shalos to R’ Moshe Z’l. The point you raise is better asked to the Rabbanim who issue these psakim for their kehila and not those who follow the psak they are given by their Rav.
jphoneMemberStill didnt answer my question. Is it good phone? can you have a normal phone conversation on this multimedia device that happens to have the letters “phone” in its name?
jphoneMemberThe original message here (someone may have alluded to this already), seems to be confusing (perhaps it is deliberate?) Chalav Stam and Chalav Akum.
November 24, 2008 4:02 pm at 4:02 pm in reply to: You Know You’ve Been Spending Too Much Time in The YWN Coffee Room When…. #1119252jphoneMember……you start wondering when Rubashkins stopped being Chalav Yisroel. 🙂
jphoneMemberKids need an outlet. As different as every kid (really all people)is from the next, is as different a solution that is needed. Cookie cutter approaches may work for the “average kid” but most kids are not “the average kid”. Hopefully, all parents know their own kids and what works for them.
jphoneMemberJust curious. How does it work as a phone?
jphoneMemberJoseph,
WHERE have you seen gallon sized containers of Golden Flow CY milk. I would make a resonable effort to purchase it.
jphoneMemberIn my humble opinion. Chalav Yisroel milk is overpriced and due to poor packaging (you can easily feel the difference between a bottle of CY and any stam milk) does not last very long and spoils rather quickly.
Again, this is my opinion, and I am not stating this as fact. CY companies are in business for themselves, not to provide yidden with CY milk. If they cared about the average consumer they would sell their milk in GALLON containers. Simple econimics says that because they can not charge 2x a half gallon for a gallon bottle, they make more per gallon this way. Until a CY company is willing to answer WHY they wont sell gallon size bottles, I will believe it is due to their greed. I have written letters to these comapnies and have not been given the courtesy of a response.
jphoneMemberThe clientele at a bar in a bowling alley is different then the clientele that frequents “a bar”. I have been in both (and yes, I asked a shayla whether I could go on a job interview held at a bar). I am not suggesting that drinking a beer with the guys instead of being in the beis midrash is the right thing to do or the right place to be, but lets put this into some perspective here. People have a hard time separating fact from opinion and hyperbole.
jphoneMemberLGBG was out bowling with me.
jphoneMemberWe have Kosher Phones, Kosher Concerts. Perhaps its time for Kosher Bars.
jphoneMemberWe are talking Monday Night Football.
Lets see what this bar looks like tonight.
jphoneMemberJoseph. Lets work with $35. So, $15/hr is a competitive rate. Especially if you pay off the right people in parking enforcement division and incent them to give tickets 🙂
(That was a joke)
jphoneMemberNuuu…sounds like a business opportunity for a developer. Anyone want to open a parking garage in BP? Looks like you can charge upwards of $50/hr while alternate side is in effect. Is cheaper than the ticket.
Anyone?
jphoneMemberA look at the haskamos given to mechabrim several hundred years ago, proves wolfish correct. Many haskamos included the cherem against publishing said sefer for x amount of time due to the great effort and expense put into puting out whatever sefer it was.
jphoneMemberHakol Biyday shamayim. It was decreed that you would have to lose this amount of money. Better this way, than at the doctors office.
jphoneMemberwhy not rename this thread: Stealing, is it muttar or assur?
jphoneMemberI heard that they are looking to rename Boro Park, Double Park.
