Judging by the sheer volume of posts across all topics and the frequency with which they appear, I think it is a safe bet that of the 10 measures of blogging that came down to this world Joseph and Brooklyn19 scopped up 9.5 shares and left the remaining half a share for every one else.
jphoneMemberThe National Council of Young Israel has an SMS alert program in place that will alert you when the sirens go off and the residents of Sderot have a minute to make it to their bunkers. It is to alert you to say Tehilim for the safety of Acheinu Beis Yisroel who are in harms way.
You can sign up for these alerts at http://www.youngisrael.org
jphoneMember“I think an other point that was mentioned was that the sports celebreties are not people we want to emulate or spend time talking about”.
Neither are 50% of the people reported on and about on YWN. Who is idolizing a sports figure?
jphoneMember“ever saw the advertisements during the super bowl? fill your brain with mud instead, it’s safer for your neshama.”
. No. I have not seen the ads during the super bowl. I dont own a television, and neither does my grandmother (thats where all my classmates used to watch TV).
. I’d rather fill my head with football, baseball, hockey and even mud, instead of the ignorant, hateful, vile trash that is spewed by some yidden about other yidden on YWN (which is of course 100% kosher because it is written under the banner of “yeshiva” and “frumkeit”.
jphoneMemberYWN Editor/moderators. Wouldnt we all be better off discussing Sports instead of the vile sinas chinam, stupidity and hostility threads such as these seem to generate? I agree that it is good for business, it brings traffic to your site which enables you to charges advertisers a decent fee, but at what price? When will you open a Sports area in the Cofee Room? 🙂 Will sports drive people away from your site? I doubt it. It will allow those who want to vent to take out their frustrations on a (for example) football player instead of spewing hateful, false garbage about Israeli soldiers (this site is filled with many such threads and loaded with many hateful, shameful and hurtful comments by yidden about yidden).
jphoneMemberCan someone please explain to me exactly what is “not kosher” about sports in general and the super bowl in particular?
. Yes, sports can be addicting. So can blogging.
. Yes, sports can be inane at times. So is discussing how many sufganiyot you ate.
. Yes, discussing sports can be a tremendous bittul zman. So can blogging about teens and cellphones.
jphoneMemberDear Editor.
When will the “YWN Superbowl Party” room” be opened? 🙂
jphoneMember“(p.s. i am not literally comparing following professional sports to eating chazir. better sports than chazir.)”
Your analogy is off. If I could not persuade the fellow to stay out of Mcdonalds, I would not, offer him ANOTHER piece of Treif. I would do whatever I could to keep him out of MsDonalds. Once he was in there, I would do what I could to get him out.
Regarding blogging and bittul zman. I would prefer that I did not engage in any bittul zman, BUT if I am going to do it anyway, I would prefer to engage in a discussion about Sports over a discussion about Latkes, Politics and silly news items. You are obviously making the decision that you would prefer to engage in bittul zman discussing other “important topics”.
jphoneMember“Thank you jphone we are aware that we are in danger or receiving a ticket,”
Sarcasm aside. Its (a ticket) a risk you may be willing to take, but “your” (not you specifically) recklessness is not a risk other may want to take. Take others into consideration too.
jphoneMember“If your on the turnpike at night and it’s dead you’ll stay within 55-65MPH? honestly?”
Whatever your answer may be. If you are driving above the posted speed limit, you can be pulled over and ticketed for speeding.

jphoneMemberI have heard said in the name of R’ Yackov Kamenetzky Z’l, that driving recklessly forces Shamayim to use your Zechusim to protect you from yourself.
I did not hear him say this, but I did hear this repeated in his name, a number of times. Did anyone else hear this in his, or anyone elses name?
jphoneMemberYankdownunder. You wrote. “The purpose of the thread also alludes me”. What does it allude to you? How does it do that?
I think you meant “E”ludes you.
jphoneMemberSpend the entire time talking Sports in the new YWN Cofee Room, Sports thread 🙂
jphoneMemberJoseph: You wrote. “KiruvWife’s point stands even if we would agree that both are equally bitul zman.”
What point might that be? I am sure I will disagree with it, but I’d like to know what I am disagreeing with.
jphoneMemberJoseph,
What point might that be? If you agree that bittul zman is bittul zman, then you waste your time the way you see fit, and I will do the same with mine. KiruvWife will waste her time as she sees fit.
KiruvWife. So, you are stating that you choose what you read and what you dont. I suppose most people online do that. All I am saying to you is, choose not to read a thread on sports.
Editors. All 287 of you (so it seems). Where are you holding in this earth shattering decision of whether or not to have a sports thread on YWN? 🙂
jphoneMemberJoseph:
“I’ve never subscribed to the notion that if one is doing something less than desirable (i.e. bitul zman blogging), than the other less than desirable thing (having a sports thread bitul zman) is then ok.”
This makes an assumption that I disagree with. This assumes that the bittul zman of blogging is somehow not as bad (or is more desireable) than the bittul zman of following sports. Bittul Zman is Bittul Zman.
I believe I addressed this by writing, “You may enjoy connecting to yidden over latkes or Rod Blagoiavic. I, and I am sure many others, would enjoy connecting with other yidden while debating the coaches decision to punt from the 48 yard line, on 4th and 1.”
jphoneMemberDear Editor. when are you opening the Sports thread 🙂
KiruvWife. You get your news from the YW Cofee room? You connect with other yidden in the coofee room, discussing what? Latkes? Parking? You are concerned that sports figures represent “people in this world who are not worthy of our admiration to say the least”, yet you read daily reports on YWN about political, business and other figures in society that are no more or less worthy of our admiration. You may enjoy connecting to yidden over latkes or Rod Blagoiavic. I, and I am sure many others, would enjoy connecting with other yidden while debating the coaches decision to punt from the 48 yard line, on 4th and 1.
jphoneMemberUpdate: He got a new 5 year lease. Sign outside the store prominently displayed “We are not closing”.
jphoneMemberSports, as much as a bittul zman as it may be, is no more a bittul zman then blogging and as addicting as it may be, is not as addictive as blogging.
jphoneMember“They really need an outlet, and team sports can teach a lot about proper middos as well.”
Also provides much needed excercise as we fight the battle of the bulge.
jphoneMemberYROS: This isn’t Hamodia.
jphoneMemberNuuuuu??? Where is the Sports thread?
jphoneMemberFor some reason I thought a Volvo was a german car. Whatever. Make believe I didnt write volvo and instead it says “german made product”.
Regarding the 25th, it is because it takes several days from the solstice to realize the days are getting longer. If you told your time by the sun, would you be able to differentiate between 2 minutes? 🙂
Those who do not follow the adjusted calendar (gregorian?) (the Greek Orthodox Church as they are called) delay all celebrations by 8 days, they are still on the original calendar (Julian?).
jphoneMemberRegarding the “lights”. They have their origin in paganism (avoda zara), which in turn looks to be a distortion of something done by Adam Harishon as stated in the Midrash. The Midrash states that after his cheit, Adam Harishon noticed that the days progressively got shorter and shorter (less sunlight every day). The shortest day of the year, is December 21 on the non jewish calendar. Within 2-3 days it became obvious that the days were getting longer again, and Adam realized that the lack of sun was part of the Briah (the seasons) and not something that was caused by his cheit. He brought korbanos on this day. With time, the world became steeped in Avoda Zara and this became a pagan holiday. When the Notzrim founded their religion it was very conveneient to use December 25th, because it was already a day the pagans celebrated. Part of “service” was to light lights to offset the lack of sun. Certain elements of this paganism remained with the Notzrim. Today, I doubt many associate the lights that are put out with the original Avoda Zara. I’m not a posek and am not issuing a Psak. just stating what is common in numerous books on history and religion.
Regarding saying “X-Mas” or its full spelling. Again, I am not a Rav, and am not stating a definitive halacha. Personally, I have a difficult time repeating the name that has been used as an excuse to kill yidden for more than 2000 years. The lights that celebrate this holiday and this persons birth/death (whatever) are also a vivid reminder of the jewish blood shed in this persons name. It bothers me to look at these lights, the way it bothers some people to buy a Volvo.
Again, not halacha, just how I feel.
jphoneMemberThe biggest YWN loggers is probably the one with the least to live for in the real world, so they spend the bulk of their time in cyberspace. Its easy living in fantasy land, where everyone is anonymous and you can spew all sorts of garbage in the name of torah.
jphoneMember“but if you think that this whole CR is all that, no-one asked you to go click on it.”
Where did I hear that before?
“But If I’m already on it and I think that this place is Kosher Veyoshor it would be a shame to have a Sports Thread for the reasons I discussed before.”
My humble apologies. I was not aware that YWN policy was based on how YOU feel. Salachti.
jphoneMember“You are so narow minded.”
HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jphoneMemberEditor. I dont understand why you dont start a thread and all those who feel it is inappropriate should stay away. Nobody asks anyone to 1)log onto this site to begin with and 2)read every thread.
jphoneMemberSports is not to be discussed on a frum website?
Let me get this straight. Lashon Hara, Rechilus and sinas chinam (threads about the rubashkins, chabad and others) are ok. Leitzanus (mother in law jokes for example) is ok. Stam naarishkeit (latkes and hamantashen) is OK. Sports which avoids the issues of Sinas Chinam, Lashon Hara, and Rechilus, THAT is unsuitable for a yeshivish website.
Sounds like twisted logic to me.
Editor: I am trying to keep this as respectful as possible and will even include the requisite disclaimer. NotPashut: With all due respect, what you wrote, is one of the dumbest thing I have ever read.
jphoneMember“He made two other points as well, in case you didn’t notice.”
He made two points. One, bittul zman, was addressed by a number of people. The other, nobody is idolizing ballplayers.
jphoneMemberThis assumes a) the gift is not for a spouse and b)the couple has a child(ren).
Offer to watch the kids so the couple can go out and spend some time by themselves for a few hours.
jphoneMember“The Bitul Zman will be terrible and it’s just not suitable for a Yeshivish Frum Website.”
How is it more of a Bittul Zman than 95% of the things “discussed” here?
It is probably better to discuss an non jew, at least it avoids all the lashon hara and rechilus that is prevalent here.
jphoneMemberYes.
jphoneMemberIs there a mekor for gift giving on chanukah? Is it based on a midrash somewhere? a comment of a rishon or an achron? Is it simply the brainchild of a store owner who capitalized on the “season” and it caught on?
jphoneMemberMEBS. The boys, or their mothers?

jphoneMember“a landlord can do what he wants… especially if a tenant has not paid rent for a number of months”
Moderator. Unless people here have specific knowledge of the situation, perhaps it is best to shut this down now before the mud starts flying.
I doubt the owner of Chiffons OR the landlord want or need anyone defending them on this site.
jphoneMemberImportant point. Just because I say I am a 53 year old male, or a 22 year old female or a Rav or (you get the point), does not make it so. The virtual anonymity afforded by the web has allowed people who would otherwise not be given a forum, often for valid reasons, a forum, to say what they want, when they want, how they want. They can state things as fact, make up “true stories” say things just to infuriate other posters and you will never know.
In fact, while your words say so, I dont believe the original message here was written by someone “just entering adulthood”. Not that I am calling you a liar, rather, I take anonymous pleas, rants and comments as just that.
jphoneMemberBrooklyn. You say rebelious. I say curious. Personally, I think that instead of just assuring everything and writing Kol Koreis and implementing policies in yeshivos (boys and girls), we invest in teaching proper hashkafos. Explain how and why boys and girls should or should not use new technology instead of simply assuring everything.
jphoneMemberAnyone, can walk into any drugstore and purchase a prepaid cellphone. They can talk and text all they want to whoever they want, domestically and internationally, until the balance hits zero. Then, they buy a top up card and continue. It is totally anonymous. No paper trails either (it can be bought with cash -and no monthly statements).
jphoneMemberApparantly the landlords are hoping to cash in with tenants like Walgreens. The 70k a month rent type of tennants. I wish them much hatzlacha.
jphoneMemberOomis. Your situation is clearly not a common occurence. Dont believe me? Randomly choose yeshivos out of the phone book and call. There is always someone to answer the phone. Even during seder.
jphoneMemberI echo the sentiment. This should be the biggest problem facing yidden today.
jphoneMemberAs a kid I always wondered just who inspector 7 whose tag was in the package of undershirts was. With all due respect to the moderators, I could care less who moderator 77, 96, 43 68 or 127,523 is. 🙂
I’m wondering who some of bloggers are. I have never seen a greater collection narishkeit, anywhere! 🙂
December 15, 2008 4:10 pm at 4:10 pm in reply to: Television: A Cry of Anguish and Appeal to Our Jewish Brethren 📺 #1192867jphoneMemberWill Hill. Your question to me is silly. It is what they call a Red Herring. It deflects the discussion from the crux of the discussion to some side point.
The Rabbonim named on this letter about TV (those who are still alive), also declared that one should not have internet access. I am not aware that the Rabbonim have stated it is muttar to have internet access IF…..
The same way you have a hetter to be online (work, filters, whatever), people use the same argument to have a TV in their home. Only news, etc…
That you do not like their decision is not their problem. They never suggested you go out and by a television, not you are or anyone else. To categorically state that someone will lose their olam habbah because they own a TV is, in my opinion, stupid, ignorant and dangerous. None of the Rabbonim cited above would ever make such a comment. We all know it.
December 14, 2008 5:52 pm at 5:52 pm in reply to: Television: A Cry of Anguish and Appeal to Our Jewish Brethren 📺 #1192817jphoneMemberJust curious. Would someone rather lose Olam Habba over the Bittul Zman spent watching TV or blogging online?
December 14, 2008 3:04 pm at 3:04 pm in reply to: Television: A Cry of Anguish and Appeal to Our Jewish Brethren 📺 #1192814jphoneMemberI’m still trying to figure out just where I advocated that one should or should not have a Television in their home. I did not say one should or could, nor did I say one may not or its best not to. Its not my place to tell anyone what to do. I was simply pointing out that the technology, in and of itself, is not a BAD thing. Telephones offer the possibility of speaking lashon hara with someone around the world, should be ban telephones from every jewish home? The ability to tune a radio to numerous FM stations, anywhere in the world, and hear things that are completely opposite to Torah values (and quite frankly most human values) exists as well. Should we advocate the removal of radios from all homes and automobiles? In fact, the internet offers the ability to see the worst that cable TV and FM radio have to offer, yet nobody assured the internet. Instead we have things like koshernet and kosherphone. If the “internet was assur”, there would be no heter for a site like YWN and no heter for anyone to use this BLOG. The gedolim have advocated the strict monitoring and use of certain technologies. Nobody has come up with a “kosherTV” just yet, but I would not be surprised if newer technologies will allow it.
I am not stating an opionion one way or another. It is not my place. Please do not infer that I am stating one way or another.
I AM curious. During the terrorist atatcks in India several weeks ago, when everyone wanted to know what was going on there were live feeds embedded on the YWN site. Did anyone avoid YWN during those days? They embedded, not only TV, but Cable TV on their site. Is there a difference in what is embedded? What if the YWN editors enbedded todays Giants game so that one can blog and see the game at the same time (Editor: I’m not holding my breath!). Did anyone avoid the site during this time?
I actually complained about it and avoided the main site because of it. I believe The Editor eventually made it into a separate link so that those who wanted to avoid it could. – YW Moderator
jphoneMemberMyshadow. You wrote. “I’m very pro kosher phones because I think it’s very important for kids to be able to contact someone in case of an emergency”.
Thats great. We are discussing boys in Mesivta. If chas veshalom there is an emergency, the yeshiva has a phone, and will surely usde it to contact you. If chas veshalom there is an emergency and you must contact your son, the same telephone will get you in touch with your son. Are you that concerned about your son o the trip to and from Yeshiva? Dont let him walk or ride the bus alone. Make him go with friends. Provide transportation. Why does he need a phone?
Again, can someone please explain why a mesivta bachur needs a phone at all?
