Does anyone know what the voter turnout was by ethnic group? For example, there was (possibly still is) a large “Pakistani Americans for David Greenfield” sign hanging on the Pakistani American Council building on Coney Island Ave off of Ave H for at least a week, so we can be reasonably sure that group voted Greenfield. What about all the Russian and Carribean americans who live in the district?
jphoneMemberWe bought such stemware in Amazing Savings (the one on McDonald Ave) in Brooklyn right before pesach last year.
jphoneMemberWhich Vaccine causes the pancreas to shut down and stop producing the enzyme insulin?
jphoneMember“I work in a office and at times it gets very boring. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for me? like some good jewish websites to keep me busy with.”
Looks like you already found something 🙂
jphoneMemberWho compared? who equated?
jphoneMemberSilver foil. Just wrap your keybopard tight. I have heard that you are not mikayem “baal yeraeh” unless you have used at least 75 sq feet of silver foil as part of your pesach cleaning.
jphoneMemberMatza Balls.
jphoneMemberThey are also hanging out on J and 15 waiting for people to make an illegal turn onto Ave J from E 14 in either direction (which you can not do M-F 8am ti 7pm).
March 22, 2010 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm in reply to: Health Care Reform Bill Got Passed, What's the CR's take on it? #681987jphoneMemberhttp://waysandmeans.house.gov/Media/pdf/111/HCare/2010_IMMEDIATE_PROVISIONS.pdf
This is the Democratic spin on what was passed. Not sure who is expected to pay for it, though. Doesn’t say, but it is usually Joe and Jane Taxpayers who foot the bill for anything the government does.
jphoneMemberIs there a problem with how tzadaka is given today?
jphoneMemberRebbetzin, you are 100% correct. However, there is so much ignorance about Diabetes that it is inevitable that when it comes to shidduchim it is lumped together with all the other “problems”.
jphoneMemberregarding the crumbs and your HD. is this an external drive? would be quite a feat for crumbs to get into your disk drive.
jphoneMemberJust cover it with foil. The more, the better.
jphoneMemberMt. Mhedi. I’m looking to buy a few dress shirts, what label is “socially responsible”?
jphoneMemberThe purpose of a Rally is to draw attention to a cause, not individuals.
jphoneMemberThere is a LOT of ignorance in the general population about Diabetes. While I dont think those living with Diabetes should keep it a secret (on a practical level, it can be a sakanah), I can understand why someone WOULD hide it from people due to the ignorance of others. That ignorance can be hurtful.
jphoneMember“Pesach is a traditional holiday that has been celebrated for many years with family. What does everyone think about the idea of going to a hotel and killing the whole tradition of spending it at home?”
This question is faulty from the get go. Why cant people further the tradition of celebrating with family, in a hotel? Extended family? Well, not everyone is at home, are they? Does the entire extended family live under the same roof? By definition, people are already away from home. Once leaving their home to further the tradition of celebrating with family, people have chosen to celebrate under the roof of a hotel instead of a private home.
jphoneMemberIs anyone really surprised that people ask for a photo? It has become “normal” to ask the most ridiculous questions already, this is the next logical step in “looking into the shidduch”.
I cant take credit for this, but I was told that the 1st bachur who asked for a photo, did so because he misunderstood his Rebbe who told him, “the most important thing to look for in a shidduch are her middos”.
jphoneMemberMost “name brands” are made in the same sweatshops that the labels for Walmart and Target come from. Its not about quality or comfort. Its about your image, what you think about yourself, the image you want to project and the image you want people to get from your projection. If they can afford it, fargin them this indulgence, if they can’t, help them control their spending in an appropriate way. Griping about it on a blog and sniping at them anonymously says to me, your just jealous.
jphoneMemberMust they be called resumes? Sounds so commercial. How about “bio”.
jphoneMember“The better question is, why do you care?”
The same reason they care to impress you.
jphoneMemberOriginal? Perhaps the tune. Nothing in the words is original, except perhaps his interpretation of the passuk the song is based on.
jphoneMemberTo impress people.
jphoneMemberMy wife has been at “get rallies” (basicly, they stood outside someones house with signs that said things like “give your wife a get”) that were held with the haskamos of neighborhood rabbonim. Ill be sure to let her know that the next time she gets such a call, she should be aware that the YWN CR poskim have ruled it is assur.
jphoneMemberI still dont understand why the overiding factor is if the gathering together is indoors or outdoors. If it is inherently untsniusdik, why does it matter if you have a seat or if you are standing in a square somewhere?
jphoneMemberThere have been some rowdy rallies at indoor arenas where everyone had a seat (OK not “yeshivish” ones).
How did indoor/outdoor became the deciding factor?
jphoneMemberJG. But with “Buzz” you have all this occupying through a single interface 🙂
jphoneMemberAn add on that works with many popular file, photo, video, text sharing applications like flickr, facebook, youtube, twitter, gmail (and other mail – but you can use it with gmail to get all these alerts via email).
jphoneMemberAhavas Chessed from the Chofetz Chaim.
jphoneMemberBut surely this is a sinister plot devised by dov hikind in his quest to tighten his iron grip on boro park.
jphoneMemberThis thread is going to deteriorate rather quickly.
Why don’t we just blame the whole thing on dov hikind and close the thread.
jphoneMemberI don’t think there is a legitimate study that concludes diabetes is hereditary. Not type 1 or type 2.
jphoneMemberGrab a sefer. What about an artscroll tanach? An english mishnayos? Chofetz chaim, a lesson a day? Not to intense, and a great way tpo occupy their time.
jphoneMemberRegarding “B”. In my boys yeshiva ketana there are several Rabbeim teaching english classes, and it has done nothing but diminished the respect the boys have for them as Rabbeim.
jphoneMemberThe fact that Regents are a requirement means that Yeshivos have to teach at least SOME of the subject matter. I can only imagine just how little of anything would be taught if schools prepared their own final exams. That kids decide they cant cram for the exam, the week before the regent is not a fault of the exam. It is the fault of students who choose to do nothing the entire school year, yeshivos that feel it is a waste of time to hire competent teachers (and where there are competent teachers fails to instill a level of seriousness for “english” that learning the subject matter requires)and apathetic parents who allow both to get away with it.
If you want to argue whether standardized tests in general (under any name) are an indication of a students progress, how well the subject matter is taught and how well a school is doing, thats a different argument.
jphoneMemberYou asked why the teachers union is for it. I don’t know, ask your husband a retired school teacher. Nobody ever accused the teachers union – the uft – of keeping an agenda that had the best interests of the students as its goal. The agenda of the uft seems to be driven by what’s best for its members.
I took the regents. They were a lot easier than any test my teachers would have prepared (I went to a school where english was and is taken seriously). I don’t think they are any more or less useful or useless, depending on your point of view, than a final exam prepared by the teacher.
jphoneMemberTo say “all the teachers do not like them” is irrelevent. As long as the leadership of the teachers union feel it is useful, they will be given until such time there is a poltician ready to tell this union “no”.
jphoneMemberThe BBerry App store has similar apps that lock down individual features (apps).
jphoneMemberYes
jphoneMemberAccording to my sources “greeced” is another way of “farfrumt”.
over the top yeshivish.
jphoneMemberLook into Torah Vodaas. Have heard from parents of high school students that the english department is “pretty good” and “not bad” (their words, not mine).
You limited your request to Brooklyn. If you are willing to expand a little, I have heard that Mesivta Yesodei Yeshurun in Kew Gardens Hills (Queens) has a top flight English department, is Yeshivish but definitely not “greeced” and is most certainly a Litvish clientele.
jphoneMemberMaybe he is studying for his GED? Cant force your so into a mesivta with a good english department if you have no diploma yourself, can you?
jphoneMemberYou can preview the “shmorg 2” at http://www.oorah.org
jphoneMemberI think everyone should get a Jphone.
jphoneMembermy point is , like health and everything else you mentioned, we DO specifically ask for moshiach. three times a day.
what you are advocating is not davening for moshiach specifically, rather to daven with kavana.
jphoneMemberim all for davening for moshiach (and anything else) all the time. nevertheless, unless you can verify that you are an advisor to the ribbono shel olam, statements like “moshiach is not here because….” are tough to take seriously. I know you didnt mean it, but the name of the thread should be rewritten if possible.
btw. dont you daven shomeh esrei three times a day? es tzemach david…..
jphoneMemberVolvie,
Is the medium any different? that is what I understand to be your point of contention.
jphoneMember“There are serious issues about the medium in this case. Whether they are insurmountable or not, is a matter for Daas Torah.”
Did you consult Daas Torah regarding posting messages on YWN?
jphoneMemberJust a thought.
Maybe it is her way of saying I cant afford to reciprocate to 150 people with mishloach manos because I cant afford it. Perhaps, what is “wrong” is that the financial situation in the home has reached a point where the family (you didnt say specifically it is a family I admit) is groaning under financial strain and this is their way of saying we can not afford to send mishloach manos. Perhaps the Mr. in this family said the same to a bunch of his acquaintances too?
jphoneMemberVolvie. THEIR rabbinic backing, just may be YOUR rav (you wont know, unless you ask them, and/or your rav).
Have you vetted every shadchan who suggested a shidduch through a Rav? Do you know anyone who has? Frumster is essentially a shadchan.
