For those who use internet email, or whose default browser is firefox or chrome, I recommend the web of trust extension, which is faster to block phishing websites than Mcafee SiteAdvisor or opendns anti-phishing protection.
JotharMemberThanks, J_______. Having one sn snitch on the other. Cute.
December 9, 2011 3:00 am at 3:00 am in reply to: Why does chicken say OU glatt on it when glatt doesn't apply to it? #834032JotharMemberBecause it’s technically true- if the lungs weren’t smooth, the chickens would be treif. So by definition, they’re glatt kosher.
JotharMemberOk, I relent. Here’s the cure for the cure:

So now you can block it when you need to prevent it from interfering with rl, but you can easily unblock it too. Now there is no excuse.
JotharMemberIt’s only a cure if you take the medicine…
JotharMemberMaybe the dolphins volunteered to be eaten at the restaurant at the end of the universe…Zarquon!
Or maybe they were killed by daleks…uh-oh, mixing multiverses!
JotharMemberWow. “Naftoli” must have been some “nosein imrei shefer” if he can still unblock his accounts.
JotharMemberHatzlacha with that.
JotharMembersqueak, I thought they said “So long, and thanks for all the phishing threads!”
December 7, 2011 5:02 pm at 5:02 pm in reply to: Lights on Shabbos and Thanking Someone for Doing an Aveirah on Your Behalf #840950JotharMemberThe shaila is not a shaila of if you get the aveirah, as ain sheliach ledvar aveirah. The shaila is if you should thank the person.
My own svara yeshara is like BrainwasheD, nitpicker and Sam2, but I am mevatel my daas to my rav.
JotharMemberbtguy, lol!
JotharMemberThe way the Gedolim dressed when they were bochurim is not the way they dressed when they were Gedolim. The Alter of slabodka did not dress in the same way as his talmidim. He encouraged his talmidim to dress differently from him.
JotharMemberWow. I can’t wait until we have the CR JDL. Is the policy here “open carry” or “concealed carry”?
JotharMemberI’m sorry, but it’s against my mesorah to make up segulos.
JotharMemberA former student of my yeshiva who became a cop stopped by on Purim. I asked to see his badge, and he showed me his badge. I told him, “Remind me not to hang around YOU tonight!”
I was drunk and I thought it was funny…
December 7, 2011 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm in reply to: Lights on Shabbos and Thanking Someone for Doing an Aveirah on Your Behalf #840944JotharMemberI found this shaila so interesting that I asked the original question to my own rav. He said that while he wouldn’t tell someone to daven to the Rebbe, we can be dan the woman lekaf zechus and assume she was just asking the Rebbe to be a meilitz yosher to Hashem, not that ch”v the Rebbe runs the world instead of Hashem. So this person can be thanked, as it’s not pashut they did an aveirah. However, if someone did a vadai aveirah, they can’t be thanked. Years ago, I helped a feledgeling Orthodox shul that was located in the basement of a Reform Temple (yes, the shailos were asked in it was cleared by poskim). I went to use the facilities. A Reform kid came out of the bathroom and shut the lights. He saw me coming and turned them back on. I have no right to thank him. And when you hold a tinok up to the light and he, on his/her own volition, turns it off/on, you are not allowed to show any sign of happiness to the kid.
JotharMemberkosher or unkosher gym?
JotharMemberRabbi Hershel Shachter defines Torah Umadda as Torah and parnassah, and same thing as Torah VoDaas, the same thing as Touro/Lander college, the same thing as what Rav Elchonon Wasserman ZT”L supported. The shiur is on yutorah. He completely disagrees with Norman Lamm that one is an incomplete Jew without it.

JotharMemberCharlie Brown, +1 and rotfl!
11,500 screen names, and 65 posters on a daily basis. J______ has been one busy poster.
JotharMemberGedolim wore black and white once they were gedolim. They did NOT wear black and white in slabodka. And for many years Rav Wachtfogel would wear a grey hat (as per Rabbi Rakefet- on this issue I assume he is meisiach lefi tumo).
JotharMemberFirstly, there is the gemara that women drinking results in growing mustaches. Secondly, drunk women hurt their babies (smothering them by rolling over them and not hearing the cries, etc).
JotharMemberThis cult is the perfect example of Kav Hayashar ch. 52- if someone acts frummer than the rest of society, they are chashud for serious behavior.
JotharMemberInsanity is hereditary…you get it from your kids.
December 5, 2011 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm in reply to: Who else is sick of all these "mods" posts? #833265JotharMemberYossi never left, Syag.
The mods are people who generously give of their free time to make this board a better place. They deserve praise, not rebuke.
JotharMemberThe uniform of the bnei torah in Slabodka was stylish. Were they not Yeshiva bochurim?
JotharMemberI had a relative at BY of BP. the school was so large that she got lost in the shuffle.
JotharMemberMaybe the ywn editor is trying to prove why we need good secular chinuch and colleges.
JotharMemberYet we have letters to the editor all the time that you should patronize frum stores and pay their high prices instead of getting the same stuff cheaper elsewhere. So yes, frum people are asked to subsidize frum store owners where market forces would render them failures.
JotharMemberThere used to be many more high-paying unskilled jobs when the teshuva was written. Automation, technology and outsourcing have killed many of them. Today, even having a college degree is no guarantee, but it sure beats the alternative.
JotharMemberAnd free pool…

GATORADE “FIERCE GRAPE” THIRST QUENCHER liquid drink now in stores is Kosher even if the label does not bear the OU. Newer labels do bear the OU. Please note that Gatorade Prime Pre-Game Fuel drink, Gatorade Recovery Post-Game beverage, and Gatorade powders are not certified.
JotharMembersephardim do this. Ashkenazim make a kiddush.
JotharMemberVolunteer to do tech support for needy organizations who can’t afford tech support.
JotharMemberIt’s the second law of thermodynamics…things tend towards entropy. Godwin’s law is just another version of this.
JotharMemberJ____ used to post against college. Turned out we were both in Touro! Lolz.
Still not sure if the views he espoused on college were what he really held, and only went due to parental pressure.
JotharMemberWhy would you want to post from your cellphone?
JotharMemberWe can always email Yossi if anything gets too serious.

JotharMemberCan a guy wear a denim shirt on a date?
JotharMemberBBtguy, your grandparents lived in Lakewood and you’re a bt guy? I would love to hear your story one of these days.
I’m not really sure what you are or aren’t saying. Lakewood used to be a resort town, picked because it WASN’T a bustling Jewish community. Rav Shenur Kotler ZT”L used to attend the wedding of anyone who lived in Lakewood, whether or not they were part of yeshiva, as the community there was small.
I thik we are using “ir hatorah” differently. You are using it in the lower-case sense, and I agree. I was using it in the upper-case “Ir HaTorah” that the locals nostalgically describe before decrying the baalei battim moving to Lakewood who aren’t “undzere”.
December 4, 2011 6:46 am at 6:46 am in reply to: Where are Sheep Without a Spleen and Bar Shattya? #832294JotharMemberthe CR is now complete. The void has been filled.
JotharMemberWhy is there so much CC talk in the CR if it’s so insignificant compared to the size of the rest of the yeshivishe oilam?
JotharMember+1!
Rabbi Rakefet Rothkoff reports that when he was in Lakewood, Rav Nosson Wachtfogel ZT”L would not wear a black hat. It is a yeridas hadoros that people can’t accept any colors other than black and white. Many men are to “frum” to wear adar blue suit. I can’t find the halacha against it- not in my mishnah brurah.
JotharMemberTrolling that doesn’t involve infostealing and insulting is pretty benign, unless they’re doing it for “backstory” to establish legitimacy. The trolling and stalking here is an ongoing situation to be managed, not a one-time problem to be solved. Baruch Hashem for the new reinforcement mods.
JotharMemberCan I take my shoes off and put my feet up?
JotharMemberThe best way not to be jealous is to realize that most of the people you are jealous of aren’t doing nearly as well as you think. You know your issues, but you do not know theirs. I just heard this point this morning from Rabbi shafier during my commute (shmuz#156)
JotharMemberConsidering the employment numbers for degreed vs. undegreed, It becomes clear that the parnassah heter for college is stronger than ever.
