I once saw someone linking to the book on hebrewbooks. Everty time the goyim come out with a new shtick, someone tries to make it Jewish.

JotharMemberI have heard of this as well.
JotharMemberMurex trunculus as a chumra would be below wool tzitzis, Chalav yisroel, pas yisroel, yoshon, zman mogen avraham for krias shema, etc. Those have reliable psakim to back them up. There are serious questions on this, as Rav Shmuel miller pointed out. And how can the Jews have lost a process that their neighbors next door were still using?
Finally, the latest archaeological evidence shows a darker techeiles color than what is being use.
The dye from murex trunculus changes color depending on exposure to sun. It can have many shades.
JotharMemberAzoi.is, my mecha’ah was justified and well-,measured based on the possuk of hocheich tochiach velo sisa. As interpreted by the Chofetz Chaim, this means don’t embarrass someone. I never singled anyone out, and never embarrased anyone. Nobody was cornered. So my rav was the Chofetz Chaim.
JotharMemberMesivta Torah Vodaas, aka MTV.
Love the initials!
JotharMemberSo what hasn’t been put in cheirem? There were plenty of gedolim who did not support the cheirem. Either way, the story was in there.
JotharMemberPosts here aren’t emails. They don’t work in the same “store-and-forward” method that email queues use.
JotharMemberZvei dinim, I asked a talmid of Rabbi Belsky. My info is different from your info.
JotharMemberhello99, my rav agrees with you. So we wait 24 hours and self-clean. Our toaster oven is on the fritz, so we have been self-cleaning more than usual of late.

JotharMemberA post at 9AM on a Friday here is 12 midnight Friday night/Shabbos morning in Australia. An hour here or there won’t make a difference. Yes, Doswin, people share ip’s, but NY and NJ are in the same general area. Your kosher internet provider may have a dhcp server with a set block of ip addresses. A dhcp server in Belgium has a different block, and one in Australia has a third block. 2 people in completely different regions of the world don’t share the same public ip. The ONLY solution is to say that 2 posters with the same style, 1 in the US and one in australia, shared the same ip somehow through spoofing or other means. So to say that maybe 2 posters from across the world happened to spoof the exact same ip and shared the same account, and therefore I can’t protest chillul shabbos, is like saying shema bemakom nekev nikeiv, and has been amply answered in Chullin dafim 10-12.
JotharMemberLifelines article about a kolle guy and his inetrnet addiction. YWN made a prominent appearance. He then stopped going on the internet and it make a big difference.
JotharMemberHaleivi, please show me the math of how likely it is that two people, in completely different parts of the world, would share the EXACT SAME ip address within a 24-hour window between Friday and shabbos. I took statistics in college, and the odds against it are 1/(4 billion -1) + 1 (4 billion -1), so the odds of it occurring are those 2 numbers multiplied out. The odds of this not being chillul shabbos are still small enough as to be effectively nill.
APY, of course the troll is still posting here, and probably using different ip addresses to boot. I just wanted him to know that Chillul shabbos is not cool. He might be more careful not to post on shabbos. Or he’ll cover his tracks better to hide his shameful chillul shabbos. Either way I had to make a mecha’ah, if a very mild one at that. I have no idea who it is, and I don’t want to know.
JotharMemberI know places that use public ip’s like 192.192.192.x for their internal network. While this is highly un-recommended, I did the math. the ods of their 100 internal ip’s clashing are 100/4 billion, or 10 over 400 million, or 1 in 40 million. So the odds of 2 different people in two completely different time zones (because otherwise, there is chillul shabbos) sharing the exact same ip within 24 hours is a miut she’eino matzui klal. The shevus yaakov defines it as less than a 10% probability, so a 2 in 4 billion possibility definitely meets his criteria. The odds of it NOT being chillul shabbos are incredibly flimsy.
JotharMemberI once knew someone who refused to date girls who didn’t have brothers, as they would have these lofty ideas of men from their rabbeim and seforim which would clash with the reality. Maybe that’s what he meant.
JotharMemberThere are 4 billion ip addresses. The odds of 2 people sharing an ip address within a 24 hour period is…less than the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot. Sorry not a math guy. The other scenarios mentioned are highly implausible, and just slightly more likely than winning the lottery.
I never identified anybody. My mecha’ah was perfectly justified and well-measured.
JotharMemberShabbos Is A Make Or Break Proposition
In the gemara in Shabbos (118) many amora’im share with us the wonderful benefits of keeping Shabbos properly. You will be saved from Gehinom, Gog UMagog, and Chevlei Moshiach. You will receive a nachala without boundaries. All your aveiros will be forgiven. All your wishes will be granted. You will be spared from the pains of Galus. All your aveiros will be forgiven. Moshiach will come. And more and more.
However the reverse is true if we are Michalel Shabbos. The Heichal HaShabbos brings a scary Remez from Rav Meir Leib Frey, a Rov in prewar Czechoslovakia, who died in the gas chambers with his Kehila refusing to leave the cattle car with a nazi officer bribed by his activist son. When we make a Siyum on Masechtes Shabbos we say, “Hadran Alecha Mi Shehichshich U’Slika La Masechtes Shabbos”. This literally means, we will return to you Perek Mi Shehichshich (the last Perek of Shabbos) and we are finished with Masechtes Shabbos.
Not keeping Shabbos is the cause of great darkness and tzorus that come to the world. These are the tzorus that haunt us and keep coming back again in every generation. “Hadran Alecha Mi Shehichshich”, the darkness will return to us. “USLika La Masechtes Shabbos” when you leave you Oh Shabbos!
May we all strengthen our Shmiras Shabbos and be zocheh to the Geula Sheleima!

JotharMembermy posts are sarcastic. I hate smoking.
JotharMemberShemiras shabbos is no mistake.
We all agree that shemiras shabbos vs chillul shabbos defines an Orthodox Jew, and that a mechallel shabbos is denying that Hashem runs the world. The only things we’re arguing about is:
1. Is it somehow possible for shabbos to be twenty-four hours instead of 25, and
2. Was my mecha’ah mild enough.
Shabbos is almost 25 hours from shkiyah one day to tzeis the next day. So this was chillul shabbos. Chutch a mild, milquetoast mecha’ah was in order. I certainly didn’t say who it was. I thought about how to make the mecha’ah, and this was the most mild way I could think of. To say nothing was impossible. This is chillul shabbos we’re talking about, not coming to davening after korbanos. When people came to America, many shomrei shabbos got fired every week. There is no need for that here, and someone is still mechallel shabbos on a frum discussion board?
It’s time for the yad yemin mekareiv, though.

Which “qualified rabbeim and gedolim” of yours argued on the halachos I stated? I can’t find any.
December 27, 2011 6:28 pm at 6:28 pm in reply to: Floating wicks- premise, problem, solution #838686JotharMemberHolyMoe, if ashashis was a halacha by menorah then:
1. Putting it by the window would be a waste of time- it’s ashashis.
2. Putting thre menorah outside in a glass enclosure would be a waste of time- it’s ashashis.
3. I would need to remove my glasses before making the bracha- otherwise it’s ashashis.
I have a nice picture of my Rosh hayeshiva lighting the menorah with glasses on. lechorah he knew the halachos. Must be no din of ashashis.

It could be it’s made out of pressboard which slowly fills up with oil and gradually sinks. The wick underneath adds support to the wick above and delays its sinking.

JotharMemberapy, I’m not the detective here- the mods were. I just heard about it and made a very mild, milquetoast micha’ah. I don’t know who he is, and I don’t want to know who he is. Chillul shabbos is a serious aveirah. If we protest chalav stam and the Beacon here, kol shekein chillul shabbos.
December 27, 2011 2:39 pm at 2:39 pm in reply to: Increase in OTD Children… are made to feel like second-class citizens, #839796JotharMemberRespectfully, a refutation means quoting sources, not quoting what you feel the halacha to be. There has been more heat than light shed so far, so I thought it prudent to actually look up the halachos. Those here who are still oseik in torasu umenaso, feel free to correct me where I am wrong and add in additional mareh mekomos.
I read through OC siman 75 with mishna brurah last night and this morning. I also took a look at the aruch hashulchan.
Mishna brura makes it clear that all areas above the knees and elbows must be covered. The heter of less than a tefach of elbow only seems to be in regards to saying krias shma, not if a woman is allowed to walk around like that. Rav Shlomo Zalman Aurbach holds the elbow itself is like the area above it (dirshu edition notes). This point isn’t clear in the mishnah brurah. The Rem”a paskens that even less than a tefach is assur for saying krias shma if it’s not your wife. Aruch hashulchan argues on this.
The mishna brurah makes clear that there is no tzad heter for showing legs or arms if everyone does it, as they must be covered.
The mishnah brura also says that less than a tefach of the area above the knee is assur even if it’s your wife, since it causes extra hirhur. The aruch hashulchan argues, and says it has the same din as the arm. Rav Henkin quoted above says that less than a tefach of above the elbow is muttar lechatchila, but it seems to argue on Rav shlomo Zalman, who says the elbow itself must be covered even though it’s less than a tefach. Rav Henkin had a “limud zechut” (as in, “I hold it’s assur but perhaps they won’t burn”) if it’s more than a tefach but the sleeves are tight so the body can’t be seen. However, this seems to contradict the gemara which says tefach be’ish ervah. The Chazon Ish holds you need to cover from the elbow to the hand, but he seems to be a daas yachid on this. If there are any relevant igros moshes on it, please let me know. I hope to go to yeshiva soon to check them out.
JotharMemberHere is the teshuiva of Rav Yehuda Herzl Henkin on the subject:
http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=20023&st=&pgnum=110
He makes it clear that “tinok shenishba” is over-applied today.
JotharMemberNobody was singled out, no name was mentioned.
So mima nafshach- if nobody was mechalel shabbos (as unlikely as it seems) then nobody is embarrased. If someone was, then he is a mechallel shabbos. This is VERY light rebuke for such a issur chamur that defines whether or not someone is Orthodox.
JotharMemberAnd congrats to whoever made it into Mishpacha.

December 27, 2011 12:29 am at 12:29 am in reply to: Increase in OTD Children… are made to feel like second-class citizens, #839778JotharMemberI did find, via google, one lenient source. Not normative halacha, though:
The best development I’ve seen on this is Rabbi Yehuda Herzl Henkin’s Contemporary Tseni’ut. It appeared in Tradition 37:3 (2003), as well as its own book. The Tradition article is available online, paid subscription required. Here’s his conclusion, as relates to your question:
A typology can be established, then, as follows:
JotharMemberThere is much contradictory info on this, but bar shatya’s is what wikipedia says. Other sites say 65 pounds-130 for a yearling lamb. But that’s with modern pproduction methods. Ancient animals were much scrawnier.
But it’s hard to get good info, as lamb is not that popular…it’s the silence of the lamb weights.
You also have to remember that the ancient kezayis was much smaller than today’s halachic kezayis, more akin to an actual zayis. So that works in pba’s favor.
(kezayis today fallows halachic mesorah, so one who eats a kezayis of matzah based on the old standard isn’t yotzei- sorry Rabbi Slifkin…)
December 26, 2011 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm in reply to: Increase in OTD Children… are made to feel like second-class citizens, #839748JotharMemberSoliek, in your experience, what are the top 3 reasons kids of otd and end up in our place?
JotharMemberI was told by someone who wants to remain anonymous that Rabbi Belsky doesn’t wear it during the week when people would see, but he does wear it on shabbos underneath his frock, and this is a personal chumra. He hasn’t discussed it publicly because he doesn’t want to impose it on others. This is also why he only wears it on shabbos, underneath his frock. I was also told his own close talmidim do not wear it. As I am just an anonymous cr poster and not a voice of authority, ask your own LOR.
JotharMemberI am working through a contact to find out about Rabbi Belsky.
Every good poseik has personal chumros he keeps for himself but does not impose on others. The question if this is one of those chumros or not.
This issue has also become highly politicized, with techeiles being viewed as a mizrachi mitzvah. So it could be, if Rabbi Belsky does this, that his silence is simply so as not to be attacked by the anti-zionists. Thus the need to clarify.
JotharMemberAPY, exactly. The halacha is that one is amechalel shabbos UNLESS they are tinok shenishba. Reb Moshe ZT”L ruled that once a person is exposed to frum Jews, there IS no heter if tinok shenishba. So by definition of being here, we know he is not a tinok shenishba.
JotharMemberThere are many issues with the murex trunculus, some of which were listed above, as well as the fact that long after the Jews “lost” the secret, the Phoenicians were still making purple dye from it just a few miles away. I knew Rav Shachter did, but Rabbi Belsky used to not. I will try to get clarity on this.
JotharMemberApy, the halacha is the a mechalel shabbos is not a yid halachicly. there are heteirim for a tinok shenishba, which don’t apply if the person in question has contact with frum Jews. You don’t need any great lomdus here. Someone who knows from Orthodoxy and decides “no” is a mechalel shabbos.
There is a second nafka mina, that one is not allowed the be mechalel shabbos to save the life of a mechalel shabbos. So if anyone know who it is, they must inform hatzalah not to be mechalel shabbos for him.
